You can use it to fly a kite or to sail a boat. Wind is one of our cleanest and richest power sources(来源) as well as one of the oldest. Evidence shows that windmills(风车)began to be used in ancient Iran back in the seventh century BC. They were first introduced to Europe during the 1100s.when armies returned from the Middle East with knowledge of using wind power. For many centuries, people used windmills to grind(磨碎)wheat into flour or pump water from deep underground. When electricity was discovered in the late 1800s, people living in remote areas began to use them to produce electricity. This allowed them to have electric lights and radio. However, by the1940s when electricity was available to people in almost all areas of the United States, windmills were rarely used. During the 1970s,people started becoming concerned about the pollution that is created when coal and gas are burned to produce electricity .People also realized that the supply of coal and gas would not last forever .Then, wind was rediscovered ,though it means higher costs. I like the idea of dreaming, of going to bed and lying still and then, by some queer magic(神奇的魔力), wandering into another kind of existence. As a child, I could never understand why grown-ups took dreaming so calmly when they could make such a fuss(大惊小怪) about any holiday, This still puzzles me. I am puzzled by people who say they never dream and appear to have no interest in the subject. It is much more astonishing than it would be if they said they never went out for a walk. Most people do not seem to accept dreaming as part of their lives. They appear to see it as an irritating(令人困扰的) little habit, like sneezing or yawning(打哈欠).I can never understand this. My dream life does not seem as important as my waking life because there is far less of it, but to me it is important.31. What is the author’s attitude toward dreaming?A. He likes itB. His family hoped that he would join his father’s business, but he showed great interest in art when he was very young. Finally, his family allowed him to enter the Royal Academy School, a very famous art college in England, at the age of twenty-two.At the Royal Academy, he was a good student, spending all his spare time drawing and reading. He showed his first painting in 1802. Constable believed the greatest art came from using the inspiration (灵感) of nature, rather than using various techniques and imagination on art.1In his lifetime, Constable never had much money. His fame only grew after his death. He was unable to earn a living from the paintings. To support his family, Constable often drew portraits (肖像) of others. But when given the chance to travel to sell his paintings abroad, he said he would rather “be a poor man in England than a rich man abroad.”After his wife —Maria died, he painted The Hay Wain. He said this picture was painted for a very particular person —the person for whom he has all his life painted.Constable died in 1837 and was buried (埋葬) alongside his wife, Maria. You can’t be good at your studies or work well when you are ill.If you have a headache, toothache, backache, earache or bad pain in the stomach, if you complain of a bad cough, if you run a high temperature and have a bad cold, or if you suffer from high or low blood pressure, I think you should go to the doctor. The doctor will examine your throat, feel your pulse, test your blood pressure, take your temperature, sound your heart and lungs, test your eyes, check your teeth or have your chest X-rayed. After that he will advise some treatment, or some medicine. The only thing you have to do is to follow his advice.Speaking about doctor’s advice, I can’t help telling you a funny story. An old gentleman came to see the doctor. The man was very ill. He told the doctor about his weakness, memory loss and serious problems with his heart and lungs. The doctor examined him and said there was no medicine for his disease. He told his patient to go to a quiet place for a month and have a good rest. He also advised him to eat a lot of meat, drink two glasses of red wine every day and take long walks. For most teens there will come a day when you realize that one of your friends is jealous and that this jealousy is hurting your friendship. When this happens it can seem like there is nothing that you can do, but the good news is that there is. Don't let jealousy spoil your relationships. Tackle(处理)it head on and you might be back to normal much sooner than you think. It can be hard to walk up to a friend and ask them what the problem is, but if you want to save your friendship you'll have to do just that. Don't approach them and ask why they are jealous of you, just take some time alone with them and let them know that you've been feeling like there's been something coming between you. If they refuse to respond, then use the opportunity to explain how you have been feeling. Chances are that something you say will strike a nerve and your friend will open up as well. When you figure out what is annoying your friend, ask him or her what (s)he thinks would make the situation better. If, for example, (s)he says that (s)he feels like (s)he doesn't get to spend any time with you because of your being off with your new friends from tee swim team then maybe you could invite her along the next time or block off one day a week for just the two of you. Remember, though, that whatever solution you decide on should be a compromise. Don't limit your own talents or opportunities simply because your friend is unhappy. Try instead to include him or her in your new life and see how that works out.Even the best of friendships can be tinged by jealousy. This destructive emotion is rarely productive and can turn best friends into worst enemies. Before taking extreme action, chat with your jealous friend to see if the two of you can work outa compromise. If you can't, be prepared to know exactly how far you will go to keep your friend and how far you won't.26.According to the author, the jealousy emotion is .3A. normalB. productiveC. destructiveD. extreme27. Which of the following is NOT mentioned as a way to face your friend when jealousy happens?A. Walking up to him/her and asking him/her why he/she is jealous of you.B. Walking up to him/her and asking him/her what the problem is.C. Spending some time with him/her and letting him/her know how you feel.D. But recent findings offer good news for older people and for people worried about getting older.Researchers found that people become happier and experience less worry after they reach the age of fifty. In fact, they say by the age of eighty-five, people are happier with their life than they were when they were eighteen years old.The findings came from a survey of more than three hundred forty thousand adults in the United States. The Gallup Organization questioned them by telephone in two thousand eight. At that time, the people were between the ages of eighteen and eighty-five.The researchers asked questions about emotions like happiness, sadness and worry. They also asked about mental or emotional stress.Arthur Stone at Stony Brook University in New York led the study. His team found that levels of stress were highest among adults between the ages of twenty-two and twenty-five.The findings showed that stress levels dropped sharply after people reached their fifties. Happiness was highest among the youngest adults and those in their early seventies. The people least likely to report feeling negative emotions were those in their seventies and eighties. The study also showed that men and women have similar emotional patterns(模式) as they grow older. However, women at all ages reported more sadness, stress and worry than men.Researchers say they do not know why happiness increases as people get older. One theory is that, as people grow older, they grow more thankful for what they have and have better control of their emotions. They also spend less time thinking about bad experiences.Professor Stone says the emotional patterns could be linked to changes in how people see the world, or maybe even changes in brain chemistry.31. He had threatened to do it many times before, but my mother had always managed to prevent him from doing so. This time he insisted on doing it.The latest incident was the last straw. Impulsively(冲动地), I had pushed Mr. Ford, my math teacher, down a flight of steps at school. He broke his arm in two places. Anyway, he had agreed not to accuse me as a favor to my dad, who was in the middle of a tight race for sheriff(执法官) in our town. But my reckless behavior had my dad’s closest advisor talking.“John, he’s your son and he’s a kid, but he is dragging you down,” I heard Jake Hutch tell my dad through his closed office door the night after I pushed Mr. Ford. “If you can’t make your son obey the rules, how can you make the law obeyed in this town?”So, off to Pisgah National Forest I went. I imagined hours of untold abuse at the hands of some strong sergeants(军士). I was determined not to be broken. I was who I was.Nearly every day for six months, a small group of other troubled teens and I carried our 30-pound backpacks on a difficult journey covering about 10 miles. We hiked in a rough wilderness that seemed untouched by civilization. Our sergeants were firm but kind, not frightening as I had imagined. We learned how to make a fire without matches and create a shelter with branches and grass. We learned which plants were safe to eat out in the wild. I felt myself change. I was calm and often reflective. My old, impulsive self was gone. One morning, six months later, my dad came to pick me up. I ran to hug him and saw relief and love in his eyes.“So what’s it like being sheriff?” I asked on the ride home.“I lost the race, Danny,” he said.“I’m sorry, Dad.” I knew my behavior probably had a lot to do with the defeat.Dad squeezed my shoulder and brought me close. “As long as I don’t ever lose you, I’m okay.”16. The author was finally sent to wilderness because __________.A. he could learn how to survive in the wildB. his teacher insisted on giving him a lessonC. he pushed his math teacher down the stairsD. his mother feared that he would be accused17. The underlined word “reckless” in Paragraph 2 probably means __________.A. selfishB. carelessC. rudeD. reasonable18. What can we learn about the author from the passage?A. He changed a lot after the camp.B. He was not satisfied with his life in the camp.C. He was still what he used to be after the camp.D. He made enemies with other troubled teens at the camp.- 2 -19. How did the author’s father feel at the end of the story?A. Grateful.B. Annoyed.C. DisappointedD. Relieved20. By saying “The latest incident was the last straw” in the 2nd paragraph, what did the author mean?A. My father failed in the race for sheriff.B. I was forced to wilderness camp for several months.C. My dad’s closest advisor talked with me.D. My math teacher agreed not to accuse me as a favor to my dad.Passage 2Do you sometimes argue about what seems to you to be simple fact? Do you argue whether it’s cold outdoors or whether the car in front of you is going faster than the speed limit? If you get into such arguments, try to think about the story about the six blind men and the elephant. The first blind man who felt the elephant’s trunk said it was like a snake. The second who felt the elephant’s side said it was like a wall, while the third said it was like a spear as he touched the animal’s tusk. The fourth, who caught hold of the elephant’s tail insisted that it was like a rope. The fifth man said it looked like a tree as he put his arms around one of the elephant’s legs. The sixth, who was tall and got hold of the elephant’s ears, said it was like a huge fan. Each man’s idea of the animal came from his own experience. So if someone disagrees with you about a “simple fact”, it’s often because his experience in the matter is different from yours. To see how hard it is for even one person to make up his mind about a “simple fact”, try this simple experiment. Get three large bowls. Put ice water in one. Put hot water in the second. Put lukewarm water in the third. Now put your left hand in the ice water. Put your right hand in the hot water. After thirty seconds, put both hands in the lukewarm water. Your right hand will tell you the water is cold. Your left hand will tell you it’s hot!21. What makes people think about simple facts differently?A. The fact that simple facts differ from one another.B. The fact that people have different experience in the simple facts.C. The fact that people often disagree with one another.D. The fact that it’s hard to make up one’s mind about simple facts.22. From the story “Six Blind Men and the Elephant”, we are advised that __________.A. we should never think about simple factsB. we should never judge something with a one-sided viewC. we should not agree about simple factsD. we must learn from the six blind men23. After reading the last paragraph, we may think of __________.A. Newton’s lawB. Galileo’s theory of falling objectsC. Einstein’s Theory of RelativityD. Marx’ s On Capital24. From the experiment in the last paragraph, why is it that your both hands feel different?A. Because your right hand was in the hot water.B. Because your left hand was put in the ice water.C. Because the lukewarm water was different from the other two.D. Because your both hands just left water of different temperature.Passage 3What makes a house a home? A home is a place of companionship with people in it who love each other, who are harmonious (和谐的) and closer with one another than with those in the workplace or with classmates at school. A home is a place that’s so magnetic(有吸引力的) that it’s difficult to leave. In a home there is love, sharing and appreciation, and the members help one another.I have seen families on the street. But if they live, sleep, talk, and eat together, they are a family, even if they are poorly off. You don’t need a roof to make a home. The truly homeless are some of the rich people who build multi-million-dollar houses and are too busy to really live in them. The truly homeless are those who have turned their home into a hotel lobby. The parents work and the children misbehave. They don’t talk and eat together every day. They rarely see each other. The truly homeless people are those with babysitters, caretakers, gardeners and maids. However, people are unaware of this, as they are too busy making money outside the home that they don’t live in. This is another way of looking at the rich and the homeless. Who is to be pitied?Control of the computer and the Internet is also important to make a house into a home. If the computer is on all the time, the house turns into an office, even if everyone is at home. Many homes these days are just offices. Human communication has stopped. The computer eats up all the time that one should be giving to others within the home. Using the computer moderately gives us time for play and communication, not with a screen, but with other people.26. Which of the following may serve as the best title for this passage?A. How to make a house a home?B. What makes a house a home?C. Who are truly homeless?D. What is a home for?27. Communication.B. Appreciation.C. Companionship.D. Kindness.Passage 4Ask any person who is successful in whatever he or she is doing what motivates him/her, and very likely the answer will be “goals”. Goal Setting is extremely important to motivation and success. So what motivates you? Why are you in college? If you are in college because that’s what your parents want, you may find it difficult to motivate yourself. Sure, it’s possible to succeed with someone else providing the motivation for you.(“If you graduate from college, I’ll give you a car!” or worse “If you don’t graduate from college, you won’t get a car.”) But motivation that comes from within really makes the difference.Certainly, you need some intelligence, knowledge base, study skills, and time management skills, but if you don’t have motivation, you won’t get far. Think about this analogy. You have a car with a full tank of gas, a well-tuned engine, good set of tires, quadraphonic CD system, and a sleek, polished exterior(外表).There it sits. This car has incredible potential. However, until a driver sits behind the wheel, puts the key in the ignition(点火装置), and cranks it up, the car doesn’t function, You guessed it; the KEY is MOTIV ATION.Interest is an important motivator for a student. So is a desire to learn. When you link these two things together, you create success. Often success in an endeavor(努力) leads to more interest and a greater desire to learn, creating an upward spiral(螺旋形) of motivation toward a goal you have established. So be honest with yourself. Are you genuinely interested in being in college? Have you set realistic goals for yourself? How can you develop the internal motivation that really counts? When it comes to motivation, KNOWING is not as important as DOING.31. Why does the writer give the example of a car in the second paragraph?A. Because people can never go far without a good car.B. Because a good car motivates some college students to study harder.C. Because a good car is a symbol of being a success.D. Because motivation leads people to success like it starts a car.32. What is the CORRECT comparison between the internal motivation and the external (外部的)motivation?A. Only the internal motivation can result in success.B. Internal motivation is more important than external motivation.C. Internal motivation and external motivation has equal importance.D. External motivation is enough for people to achieve success.33. According to the article the following factors can push people towards their goals EXCEPT__________.A. interestB. the desire to learnC. the knowledge of motivationD. the sense of success34. What’s the main purpose of the article?A. To encourage everyone to learn something about the knowledge of motivation.- 5 -B. To inspire college students to set goals for their college life.C. To imply that the less motivated college students quit the college.D. To call on parents to give up their over-protection of their children.35. What may be the writer’s advice to the potential readers?A. The goals you set for yourself shouldn’t be far beyond your reach.B. You needn’t study hard if you are really not interested in it.C. You should work harder to win praise from others.D. Honesty is the best policy to solve problems in your life.三、完形填空(共15分,每小题1分)My dad was driving to the city center to shop and I was going along for the ride. It seems there is a scientific reason for this.Researchers are now studying the relationship between music and remembering a foreign language. They find that remembering words in a song is the best way to remember even the most difficult language.“Singing could be a new way of learning a foreign langu age. The brain likes to remember things when they are used in a catchy and meaningful way”, said Dr, Karen Ludke. The findings may help those who have difficulties learning foreign languages. On his blog, Dr. Ludke writes, “A listen-and-repeat singing method can support foreign language learning, and opens the door for future research in this area.”Many language teachers know the value of using music and singing. Hua Zhuying, a teacher at a Chinese language school in Washington, D.C. depends heavily on songs in teaching Chinese. She says, “I use music all the time to teach children Chinese. For little kids usually we use the music. Not only does it work, but it is fun for kids.”“Sometimes, I think if I were taught English that way, maybe I could speak mu ch better English than now,” Hua Zhuying adds. Our brain likes music, especially for remembering. Mass media can be divided into two groups: print media and electronic media. By print media, we mean books, newspapers and magazines. Electronic media include television, computer, radio and movie. Mass media allow us to record and pass information rapidly to a large, scattered audience. They extend our ability to talk to each other by helping us overcome barriers caused by time and space. There are various ways in which mass media make daily life easier for us. Firstly, they inform and help us keep a watch on our world. They gather and pass on information we would be unlikely or unable to obtain on their own.Secondly, mass media help us to arrange our time and life. What we talk about and what wethink about are greatly influenced by the media. When people get together, they tend to talk about certain happenings in newspapers or on TV. Because we are exposed to different points of view through different kinds of media every day, we are able to evaluate all sides of a certain issue.Thirdly, the media are used to persuade people. A good example is advertisements through the media. Newspapers, magazines and TV are filled with all kinds of colorful, persuasive advertisements. Though many advertisements may not say openly that they want you to buy a certain product, they describe their products in such a way that you may want to buy them.Fourthly, the media also entertain. All of the media make efforts to try to entertain their audience. For instance, even though the newspaper is a prime medium of information, it also contains entertainment features. Television, motion pictures, fiction books and some radio stations and magazines are devoted mainly to entertainment. NewspapersPassage 3When international aid is given, steps must be taken to ensure (确保)that the aid reaches the people for whom it is intended. The way to achieve this may not be simple. It is very difficult for a nation to give help directly to people in another nation. The United Nations Organization (UNO) could undertake to direct the distribution of aid. Here however rises the problem of costs. Also tied with this is time. Perhaps the UNO could set up a body of devoted men and women in every country who can speedily distribute aid to victims of floods and earthquakes.More than the help that one nation can give to another during a disaster; it would be more effective to give other forms of help during normal times. A common proverb says, “Give me afish and I eat for day, teach me to fish and I eat for a lifetime.” If we follow this wise saying, it would be right to teach people from less developed nations to take care of themselves. For example, a country could share its technology with another. This could be in simple areas like agriculture or in more complex areas like medical and health care or even in building satellites. Even small country is able to help less developed nations. Sometimes what is take for granted, like the setting up of a water purification plant or the administration of a school, could be useful for countries which are looking about to solve common problems. It does not cost much to share such simple things. Exchange students could be attached for a number of months or years and learn the required craft while on the site. They can then take their knowledge back to their homelands and if necessary come back from time to time to clear doubts or to update themselves. Such aid will be truly helpful and there is no chance of it being temporary or of it falling into the wrong hands. Many countries run extensive courses in all sorts of skills. It will not cost much to include deserving foreigners in these courses. Besides giving effective help to the countries concerned, there is also the build-up of friendships to consider. Giving direct help by giving materials may be effective in the short run and must continue to be given in the event of emergencies. However, in the long run what is really effective would be the sharing of knowledge.26. According to the author, how could international aid reach the victims in time?A. By solving the cost problemsB. By solving the transportation problemsC. By relying on the direct distribution of the UNO.D. By setting up a body of devoted people in every country.27. What does the author try to express in the underlined sentence?A. Providing food is vital. Learning to fish is helpfulC. Teaching skills is essentialD. Looking after others is important.28. The second paragraph is developed mainly ____.A.by contrastB.by processC.by comparisonD.by example29. Which aid is likely to fall into the wrong hands?A. A medical team.B. An exchange program.C. Financial support.D. A water plant.30. What can we infer about international aid from the passage?A. It is facing difficultiesB. It is unnecessary during normal timesC. It should be given in the form of materialsD. It has gained support from developed countriesPassage 4Human needs seem endless. When a hungry man gets a meal, he begins to think about an overcoat; when a manager gets a new sports car, a big house and pleasure boats dance into view. The many needs of mankind might be made up of several levels. When there is moneyenough to satisfy one level of needs, another level appears. The first and most basic level of needs involves food. Once this level is satisfied, the second level of needs, clothing and some sort of shelter, appears. By the end of World WarⅡ, these needs were satisfied for a great majority of Americans. Then a third level appeared. It included such items as automobiles and new houses.By 1957 or 1958 this third level of needs was fairly well satisfied. Then, in the late 1950s, a fourth level of needs appeared: the “life-enriching” level. While the other levels involve physical satisfaction, that is, the feed in comfort, safety, and transportation, this level stresses mental needs for recognition, achievement, and happiness. It includes a variety of goods and services, many of which could be called “luxury” items. Among them are vacation trips, the best medical and dental care, and recreation. Also included here are fancy goods and the latest fashions. On the fourth level, a lot of money is spent on services, while on the first three levels more is spent on goods. Will consumers raise their sights to a fifth level of needs as their income increases, or will they continue to demand luxuries and personal services on the fourth level?A fifth level would probably involve needs that can be achieved best by community action. Consumers may be spending more on taxes to pay for government action against disease, ignorance, crime, and prejudice. After filling our stomachs, our clothes closets, our garages, our teeth and our minds, we now may seek to ensure the health, safety, and leisure to enjoy more fully the good things on the first four levels.31. According to the passage, man will begin to think about such needs as housing and clothing only when _____.A. he has saved up enough moneyB. he has grown dissatisfied with his simple shelterC. he has satisfied his hungerD. he has learned to build houses32. It can be inferred from the passage that by the end of World War Ⅱ, most Americans _____.A. were very richB. lived in povertyC. had the good things on the first three levelsD. did not own automobiles33. Which of the following is NOT related to "physical satisfaction"?A. A successful career.B. A comfortable home.C. A good meal.D. A family car.34. What is the main concern of man on the fourth level?A. The more goods, the better.B. The more mental satisfaction, the better.C. The more "luxury" items, the better.D. The more earnings, the better.35. The author tends to think that the fifth level .A.would be little better than the fourth levelB.may be a lot more desirable than the first fourC.may ask consumers to spend less on taxesD.would be attainable before the government takes actions三、完形填空(共15 分,每小题 1 分)Eco-tourism involves people traveling to beautiful but environmental sensitive places. They are in space, and they can reach any part of the world. The satellites take pictures of the atmosphere(大气), because this is where the weather form. They send these pictures to theweather stations. So meteorologists(气象学家)can see the weather of any part of the world. From the pictures, the scientists can often say how the weather will change.Today, nearly five hundred weather stations in sixty countries receive satellite pictures. When they receive new pictures, the meteorologists compare them with earlier ones. Perhaps they may find that the clouds have changed during the last few hours. This may mean that the weather on the ground may soon change, too. In their next weather forecast, the meteorologists can say this.So the weather satellites are a great help to the meteorologists. Before satellites were invented, the scientists could forecast the weather for about 24 or 48 hours. Now they can make good forecasts for three or five days. Soon, perhaps, they may be able to forecast the weather for a week or more ahead.16. Satellites travel ____.A.in spaceB. above spaceC. above the groundD.in the atmosphere17. The main idea of this passage is that satellites are now used in ____.A. taking pictures of the earthB. receiving pictures of the atmosphereC. weather forecastingD. doing other work in many waysPassage 2We bet that on cold wintry days, many of you love to stay in your warm home and, every now and then, come out into the kitchen for a snack. Unfortunately, plenty of creepy-crawly critters (爬行生物) like to do the same thing!Winter is the time when bugs (虫子) invade your house without an invitation. The season can be tough for such creatures. In winter the air is cold, the ground is hard and many trees have no leaves. So bugs do what they have to do to survive.Monarch butterflies head south to warmer climates. Ants crowd in deep underground colonies and eat food they have been storing all year. Many insects go into a deep sleep called diapauses. There’re different kinds of diapauses, but all are similar to hibernation, a time when bigger animals become inactive in the cold. Insects go into an inactive period, too, but it often isn’t when the temperature drops. They rely on more dependable signals in the environment. For example, many insects can tell how much sunlight there’s each day. They use that to tell themselves when to shut down. Bugs are cold-blooded, meaning that their inside temperature is the same as the outside. They can’t move much when it gets below 40 degrees Fahrenheit. So they search for any warm place. They’re looking for protection. These guys have been doing this for 300 million years, so they don’t really know they’re coming into your house. The home is a recent event in terms of their evolutionary behavior. They enter through tiny cracks or come in unnoticed on your clothes or shoes. Remember that they may be invading your homes for warmth and food, but they don’t care about humans.21. What is the purpose of the first paragraph?A. To point out that humans like to stay at home in winter.B. To tell readers that humans and bugs have the same living habits.C. To mean that bugs will invade humans’ houses for their winter.D. To put forward the idea that bugs are not welcome in winter.22. The diapause of insects is____ .A. not the same as the animals’ hibernation.B. appearing in warm areas all the year.C. done to keep bugs active in winter.D. a deep sleep similar to hibernation.23. What decides bugs’ diapauses?A. Various environmental signals.B. The amount of sunlight.C. The lower local temperature.D. The insects’ inside temperature.24. Bugs invade humans’ homes to ____.A. attack humansB. look for enough foodC. seek for protectionD. show their evolutionary results25. What would be the best title for the text?A. Bugs’ Life on Wintry Day sB. Reasons for Bugs’ Invasion in winterC. Good Relations between Humans and BugsD. The students are allowed to know why they’re learning certain information so their natural curiosity can be satisfied.3. Input. Once the purpose is clear, the teacher puts new knowledge before the students. This might be taught in a variety of ways, including the use of lectures, demonstrations, recordings, or computers.4. Modeling. The teacher then demonstrates some aspects of the new information. As the students watch the teacher solve a problem or complete an experiment, they learn by watching their teacher model how to use the information successfully.5. Checking for Understanding. Eating breakfast at the start of the day, we have been told and told again, is as necessary as putting gasoline in the family car before starting a trip. But for many people, the thought of food as the first thing in the morning is never a pleasure. So in spite of all the efforts, they still take no breakfast. Between 1977 and 1983, the latest year for which figures could be obtained, the number of people who didn’t have breakfast increased by 33%---from 8.8 million to 11.7 million---according to the Chicago-basedMarket Research Corporation of America .For those who dislike eating breakfast ,however ,there is some good news.Several studies in the last few years have shown that ,for grown-ups especially ,there may be nothing wrong with omitting breakfast,” Going without breakfast does not affect work,” said Arnold E. Bender, former profe ssor of nutrition at Queen Elizabeth College in London ,“nor does giving people breakfast improve work.” Scientific evidence linking breakfast to better health or better work is surprisingly inadequate, and most of the recent work involves children, not grown-ups.” The literature,” says one research, Dr Earnest Polite at the University of Texas,” is poor.”31. 2017年专升本英语试题
2017年军考大专生英语试题考试时长:120分钟;考试分数:100分一.快速阅读(共10分,每小题1分)Spiders can be distinguished from other Arachnids because the prosoma (combined head and thorax) is only separated from the opisthosoma (abdomen) by a narrow waist, in other Arachnids the whole body appears to be much more of a single unit. All spiders produce silk, but only some construct webs to catch their homes and to protect their eggs. All spiders possess poison glands but very few of them are dangerous to humans, of the 600 species in Britain only 12 (at least one of these is a recent human assisted colonist) are strong enough to pierce the human skin, and apart from allergies, none are more dangerous than a common wasp. Most spiders have 8 eyes (though some have 6, 4, 2 or 0), as well as 8 legs. (By the way if you count the claws as separate leg section (which you shouldn’t really) then their legs have 8 parts as well (coxa, trochanter, femur, patella, tibia, tarsus, metatarsus, claws). There are more than 32,000 known species of spider in the world. No human being has ever been officially recorder as having died as the result of tarantulas’ bite. All spiders are carnivorous and feed only on liquids, i.e. their preys’natural juices and the breakdown products of external digestion (meaning they spit, exude or inject digestive juices onto/into their prey and suck up the resulting soup). So why not invite some to your next social do?What’s In a NameThe word Arachnida comes from the Greek word Arachne, who was the daughter of Idmon of Colophon in Lydia, a dyer by trade. Arachne herself was a weaver, the best in all the known world. However in a foolish moment she challenged Athene, the daughter of Zeus and goddess of, among other things, waving to a weaving competition. Arachne wove so perfect a cloth that she tore it to shreds. Arachne became depressed after this and in the end she hung herself. Athene stirred to remorse at the knowledge of what her anger had wrought turned the rope Arachne had used to hang herself into a web and Arachne herself into a spider so that the beauty of her spinning should not be lost to the world ever again. The Great Household Spider SafariThere are just over six hundred different sorts of spiders in the British Isles. But of these only a handful are commonly found in houses. At the front of the head are a pair of what appear to be small legs. These are called palps and are used to guide food to the spiders’ mouth. The front of the head also has a group of six or eight eyes. On the underside of the body at the rear, are four or six small conical bumps or cylinders. There are the spinnerets from which the spider produces the silk to make its webs.Telling male and female spiders apart is easily done by looking at their palps. Males have swollen ends to their palps which makes them look as if they are wearing boxing gloves, these are often strange shapes if looked at with a hand lens. Females have normal looking palps that are not swollen at the ends. The largest spider is the Goliath spider, the female of which grows to reach a leg span of ten inches. The largest spider in Britain is the Cardinal spider which is a close cousin of Tim Tegenaria. Females can achieve a leg span of four and a half inches. It is known as the Cardinal spider as it was common in Hampton Court when Cardinal Wolsey lived there. The sight of these long legged spiders wandering around the palace at night used to frighten him. So far 32,000 different kinds of spider have been discovered from all over the world. Britain has 630 different kinds of spider of which 250 are tiny Money spiders. The smallest of which has a body less than one millimeter long.问题1~7,填写Y(符合文章内容);N(不符合文章内容);NG(文章未提及)。

士兵军考之英语练习:阅读理解(带答案与解析)(3)教学文稿
2017士兵军考之英语练习:阅读理解(带答案与解析)(3)关键词:士兵考军校军考英语士兵军考阅读理解One silly question I simply can't stand is "How do you feel?" Usually the question is asked of a man in action-a man on the go, walking along the streets, or busily working at his desk. So what do you expect him to say? He'll probably say, "Fine, I'm all right," but you have put a bug(小虫子) in his ear-maybe now he's not sure. If you are a good friend, you may have seen something in his face, or his walk, that he overlooked(忽略) that morning. It starts worrying him a little. First thing you know, he looks in a mirror to see if everything is all right, while you go merrily on your way asking someone else "How do you feel?" Every question has its time and place. It's perfectly acceptable, for instance, to ask "How do you feel?" if you're visiting a close friend in the hospital. But if the fellow is walking on both legs, hurrying to take a train, or sitting at his desk working, it's silly to ask him that silly question. When George Bernard Shaw, the famous writer of plays, was in his eighties, someone asked him. "How do you feel?" Shaw put him in his place. "When you reach my age", he said, "either you feel all right or you're dead."1、According to the writer, greetings such as "How do you feel?" _______.A. show one's consideration for othersB. are a good way to make friendsC. are proper to ask a man in actionD. generally make one feel uneasy2、The question "How do you feel?" seems to be correct and suitable when asked of_______.A. a man working at his deskB. a person having lost a close friendC. a stranger who looks somewhat worriedD. a friend who is ill3、George Bernard Shaw's reply in the passage shows his _______.A. cheerfulnessB. clevernessC. abilityD. politeness4、"You've put a bug in his ear" means that you've _______.A. made him laughB. shown concern for himC. made fun of himD. given him some kind of warning【答案与解析】文章告诉我们,在通常情况下,我们不宜用How do you feel? 来问候别人,除非你是看去看望住院的好友。

Paracutin was born in Mexico in February, 1943. At the end of one week Paracutin was 500 feet high, and it is now over 9, 000 feet high. Today Paracutin is asleep.
What is Paracutin? It was the first volcano(火山) in the world which was seen from its birth right up to the present day. On February 20, 1943, a peasant and his wife set out to work in their corn fields from the Mexican village of Paracutin. They were surprised to find the earth warm under their feet. Suddenly they heard noises deep in the earth and a small hole appeared in their field. In the afternoon there was a sudden loud noise and stones were thrown high in the air. The peasants ran from the field and turned to watch. They saw the birth of a volcano.
Large quantities of stone and lava(岩浆) broke out and a little hill began to form. By evening this hill was 100 feet high and hot ashes(灰烬) were falling on the village. At night the strong light of the hot lava lit up the countryside. The trees near the village were killed and the villagers had to leave their houses. When the village was destroyed, its name was given to the volcano. The news quickly reached Mexico City, far to the east. Many people came to watch the scene. The volcano grew and grew for ten years and hundreds of square miles of forest were destroyed. Then Paracutin went to sleep.
