Cell PhonesBelieve it or not, cell phones have been around for over a quarter of a century. The first commercial (商业的) cell phone system was developed by the Japanese in 1979. But cell phones have changed a lot since that time. The early cell phones were big and heavy but they have been developed into small and light palm-sized models. There have been huge developments in their functions, too. We have had cell forwarding, text messaging, answering services and hands-free use for years, but now there are countless new uses, such as instant access to the internet and receiving and sending photos.Cell phones have become very common in our lives; recent statistics suggest as many as one in three people on the planet now have a cell phone, and most of them say they can’t live without one. Cell phones are used in every area of our lives and have become a necessary tool, used for essential arrangements, social contact and business. They have made it easier to call for help on the highway. They have made it possible to keep in touch with people” on the move” when people are traveling.Cell phones have made communication easier and have reduced the need for family arguments. We can use cell phones to let our family know we’ll be late or if there’s a change of plan or an emergency(紧急情况)。

It can be risky for parents to raise the issue of eating habits and weight with their kids.“No kid ever lost weight because his mother told him he was fat,” a friend told me when I was worried about my son’s weight. It turns out she was right, according to a new study. The study was directed by Dr. Berge at University of Minnesota. She found that kids whose parents discussed eating in a healthy way were les. s likely to have eating problems. But 64% of the kids whose parents focused on their weight turned to unhealthy eating behaviors. Some kids went on extreme diets, and others even ate no food. So eating disorders were caused. Things were worse when fathers joined in the discussions with their daughters and focused on weight. “Fathers should never comment on their daughters’weight,” says Berge.Instead, she suggests, fathers should focus on their daughters' interests. That can help them feel loved and confident enough to work on their weight issues. How should parents talk to kids about. eating behaviors? According to Berge, they should avoid focusing on how much their kids weigh. They should talk to them about being healthy. Don't compare them with others. Ideally, both parents should share the responsibility. If that' s not possible, choose the parent whose words cause the least amount of stress and who demonstrates healthy eating.11. You copy a paragraph and paste it into your report. Then you continue your research. But you just made a big mistake. You committed plagiarism. Plagiarism is when you use someone else' s words or ideas and pretend that they are yours. It' s not allowed in school, college, or beyond.②The word" plagiarism" comes from Latin. It means stealing a person' s ideas. But it' s not always easy to tell what is plagiarism and what is not. Sometimes, it's accidental. You really intended to do your own work, yet ended up with some sentences that sound just like something you’ve read.③Though plagiarism can be accidental, it's sometimes done on purpose. That' s just being lazy. By copying whole paragraphs from different places, you don't have to spend the time thinking about the subject, gathering your own thoughts about it, and then putting them into original words. Cut, paste, and you’re done.④Most schools are pretty strict about plagiarism, If you’re caught, your graduation will be delayed or worse. At the very least, you’re probably going to fail the assignment. When you’re older and in college, some schools will kick out students who plagiarize. When you’re kicked out of one college, it can be hard to get into another.⑤To be on the safe side, always make it clear where the information comes from. You need to write references. That’s a list of the sources you used for a project or report. To do that, you’re need to know the author, the title, and the date it was published. If you write something really great, maybe some day someone will quote you in a report.Task 116. Paragraph①:17. Paragraph②:1 8. Paragraph③:19. Paragraph④:20. Paragraph⑤:Task 221. You commit plagiarism when you ________22. Sometimes it is hard to tell whether_________23. Copying whole paragraphs can ____________.24. 回答1-10题React to DifficultiesIn life you will constantly be facing challenges, times when it’s tough to feel confident about what will happen in the future. Times like these will have different degrees of intensity and duration. The greater the degree and the longer the duration, the greater the fear and sense of uncertainty will be.As many of you know, the economy seems to be in a downward spiral right now. Today alone, trillions of dollars are being wiped out in a matter of days. People’s retirement funds are being cut in double digit percentages. Many are facing job losses in a time when they need income the most. In times like these,it’s a real challenge to have any optimism and confidence that things are going to be better in the near future.I read an article where a financial expert stated if he went all in with his money today, he’ll be better off six months from today since markets will always rebound, but added he will have many restless nights and will be constantly wondering "what if this time it’s different?"It’s sometimes difficult to stay positive and motivated to work on your goals especially when all around you there are people so pessimistic about, well, everything in general. People are cutting back on everything. Conversations around the dinner table and water cooler are increasingly about the state of the economy.Ok, enough negative talk. If you notice, you have some people reacting negatively while others are acting positively. Here’s what makes the difference. You get what you focus on. You can either think about how bad you have it and feel like a victim,or you can use these challenges as a reason to step up and grow from them.Yes, things look like economy will get worse. The reality, however, really depends on how you look at it and react to this situation.Like any challenge in life it’s not what actually happens that will determine the outcome it’s what you decide to do about it.In life people are always troubled with challenges.( )A.TrueB.FalseC.Not Given2The fear and sense of uncertainty will be independent of the degree and the duration of difficult times. 专题08 阅读理解判断推理题-周练(原卷版)

专题08 阅读理解判断推理题-周练(原卷版)

判断推理专项训练081.(2014·上海)阅读理解If you could be anybody in the world, who would it be? Your neighbour or a super star? A few people have experienced what it might be like to step into the skin of another person, thanks to an unusual virtual reality(虚拟现实)device. Rikke Wahl, an actress, model and artist, was one of the participants in a body swapping experiment at the Be Another lab, a project developed by a group of artists based in Barcelona. She swapped with her partner, an actor, using a machine called The Machine to Be Another and temporarily became a man. "As I looked down, I saw my whole body as a man, dressed in my partner's pants," she said. "That's the picture I remember best."The set-up is relatively simple. Both users wear a virtual reality headset with a camera on the top. The video from each camera is sent to the other person, so what you see is the exact view of your partner. If she moves her arm, you see it. If you move your arm, she sees it.To get used to seeing another person's body without actually having control of it, participants start by raising their arms and legs very slowly, so that the other can follow along. Eventually, this kind of slow synchronised(同步的)movement becomes comfortable, and participants really start to feel as though they are living in another person's body.Using such technology promises to alter people's behaviour afterwards-potentially for the better. Studies have shown that virtual reality can be effective in fighting racism-the bias(偏见)that humans have against those who don't look or sound like them. Researchers at the University of Barcelona gave people a questionnaire called the Implicit Association Test, which measures the strength of people's associations between, for instance, black people and adjectives such as good, bad, athletic or awkward. Then they asked them to control the body of a dark skinned digital character using virtual reality glasses, before taking the test again. This time, the participants' bias scores were lower. The idea is that once you've "put yourself in another's shoes" you're less likely to think ill of them, because your brain has internalised the feeling of being that person. The creators of The Machine to Be Another hope to achieve a similar result. "At the end of body swapping, people feel like holding each other in their arms," says Arthur Pointeau, a programmerwith the project. "It's a really nice way to have this kind of experience. I would really, really recommend it to everyone."(2)We can infer from the experiment at the Be Another lab that______.A.our feelings are related to our bodily experienceB.we can learn to take control of other people's bodiesC.participants will live more passionately after the experimentD.The Machine to Be Another can help people change their sexes(4)It can be concluded from the passage that______.A.technology helps people realize their dreamsB.our biases could be eliminated through experimentsC.virtual reality helps promote understanding among peopleD.our points of view about others need changing constantly2.One day when I was 12, my mother gave me an order: I was to walk to the public library, and borrow at least one book for the summer. This was one more weapon for her to defeat my strange problem — inability to read.In the library, I found my way into the “Children’s Room.” I sat down on the floor and pulled a few books off the shelf at random. The cover of a book caught my eye. It presented a picture of a beagle. I had recently had a beagle, the first and only animal companion I ever had as a child. He was my secret sharer, but one morning, he was gone, given away to someone who had the space and the money to care for him. I never forgot my beagle. There on the book's cover was a beagle which looked identical(相同的)to my dog. I ran my fingers over the picture of the dog on the cover. My eyes ran across the title, Amos, the Beagle with a Plan. Unknowingly, I had read the title. Without opening the book, I borrowed it from the library for the summer.Under the shade of a bush, I started to read about Amos. I read very, very slowly with difficulty. Though pages were turned slowly, I got the main idea of the story about a dog who, like mine, had been separated from his family and who finally found his way back home. That dog was my dog, and I was the little boy in the book. At the end of the story, my mind continued the final scene of reunion,on and on, until my own lost dog and I were, in my mind, running together. My mother's call returned me to the real world. I suddenly realized something: I had read a book, and I had loved reading that book. Everyone knew I could not read. But I had read it. Books could be incredibly wonderful and I was going to read them.I never told my mother abo ut my “miraculous” (奇迹般地) experience that summer, but she saw a slow but remarkable improvement in my classroom performance during the next year. And years later, she was proud that her son had read thousands of books, was awarded a PhD in literature, and authored his own books, articles, poetry and fiction. The power of the words has held.(3)Why could the author manage to read the book through?A.He was forced by his mother to read it.B. He identified with the story in the book.C. The book told the story of his pet dog.D.The happy ending of the story attracted him.(4)What can be inferred from the last paragraph?A.The author has become a successful writer.B.The author’s mother read the same book.C.The author’s mother rewarded him with books.D.The author has had happy summers ever since.3.阅读理解Science has a lot of uses. It can uncover laws of nature, cure diseases, make bombs, and help bridges to stand up. Indeed science is so good at what it does that there’s always a temptation(诱惑) to drag it into problems where it may not be helpful. David Brooks, author of The Social Animal: The Hidden Sources of Love, Character, and Achievement, appears to be the latest in a long line of writers who have failed to resist the temptation.Brooks gained fame for several books. His latest book The Social Animal, however, is more ambitious and serious than his earlier books. It is an attempt to deal with a set of weighty topics. The book focuses on big questions: What has science revealed about human nature? What are the sources of character? And why are some people happy and successful while others aren't?To answer these questions, Brooks surveys a wide range of disciplines(学科). Consideringthis, you might expect the book to be a dry recitation of facts. But Brooks has structured his book in an unorthodox(非常规的), and perhaps unfortunate, way. Instead of introducing scientific theories, he tells a story, within which he tries to make his points, perhaps in order to keep the reader's attention. So as Harold and Erica, the hero and heroine in his story, live through childhood, we hear about the science of child development and as they begin to date we hear about the theory of sexual attraction. Brooks carries this through to the death of one of his characters. On the whole, Brooks’s story is acceptable if uninspired. As one would expect, his writing is mostly clear and, to be fair, some chapters stand out above the rest. I enjoyed, for instance, the chapter in which Harold discovers how to think on his own. While Harold and Erica are certainly not strong or memorable characters, the more serious problems with The Social Animal lie elsewhere. These problems partly involve Brooks's attempt to translate his tale into science.(2)According to the author, which of the following could be a strength of the book?A.Its strong basis.B.Its convincing points.C. Its clear writing.D.Its memorable characters.4.At thirteen, I was diagnosed(诊所)with kind of attention disorder. It made school difficult for me. When everyone else in the class was focusing on tasks, I could not.In my first literature class, Mrs.Smith asked us to read a story and then write on it, all within 45 minutes. I raised my hand right away and said,“Mrs. Smith, you see, the doctor said I have attention problems. I might not be able to do it.”She glanced down at me through her glasses, “you are no different from your classmates, young man.”I tried, but I didn't finish the reading when the bell rang. I had to take it home.In the quietness of my bedroom, the story suddenly all became clear to me. It was about a blind person, Louis Braille. He lived in a time when the blind couldn't get much education. But Louis didn't give up. Instead, he invented a reading system of raised dots(点), which opened up a whole new world of knowledge to the blind.Wasn't I the “blind” in my class, being made to learn like the “sighted” students? My thoughts spilled out and my pen started to dance. I completed the task within 40 minutes. Indeed, I was no different from others; Ijust needed a quieter place. If Louis could find his way out of his problems, why should I ever give up?I didn't expect anything when I handled in my paper to Mrs.Smith, so it was quite a surprise when it came back to me the next day- with an“A” on it. At the bottom of the paper were these words:“ See what you can do when you keep trying?”(2)What do we know about Louis Braille from the passage?A.He had good sightB.He made a great invention.C.He gave up readingD.He learned a lot from school(3)What was Mrs.Smith ‘s attitude to the author at the end of the story?A.AngryB.ImpatientC.SympatheticD.Encouraging。

2014年职称英语 阅读判断(14) +stage fright

第14篇:Stage Fright(A级)Fall down as you come onstage. That's an odd trick. Not recommended. But it saved the pianist Vladimir Feltsman when he was a teenager back in Moscow. The veteran cellist Mstislav Rostropovich tripped him purposely to cure him of pre-performance panic,Mr. Feltsman said, "All my fright was gone. I already fell. What else could happen?"Today, music schools are addressing the problem of anxiety in classes that deal with performance techniques and career preparation. There are a variety of strategies that musicians can learn to fight stage fright and its symptoms:icy fingers, shaky limbs ,racing heart, blank mind.Teachers and psychologists offer wide-ranging advice, from basics like learning pieces inside out, to mental discipline, such as visualizing a performance and taking steps to relax. Don't deny that you're jittery ,they urge; some excitement is natural, even necessary for dynamic playing. And play in public often, simply for the experience.Psychotherapist Diane Nichols suggests' some strategies for the moments before performance, "Take two deep abdominal breaths, open up your shoulders, then smile," she says. "And not one of these 'please don't kill me' smiles. Then choose three friendly faces in the audience, people you would communicate with and make music to, and make eye contact with them. " She doesn't want performers to think of the audience as a judge.Extreme demands by mentors or parents are often at the root of stage fright, says Dorothy Delay, a well-known violin teacher. She tells other teachers to demand only what their students are able to achieve. .When Lynn Harrell was 20, he became the principal cellist of the Cleverland Orchestra, and he suffered extreme stage fright. "There were times when I got so nervous I was sure the audience could see my chest responding to the throbbing. It was just total panic. I came to a point where I thought, ' If I have to go through this to play music, I think I' m going to look for another job. Recovery, he said, involved developing humility-recognizing that whatever his talent, he was fallible, and that an imperfect concert was not a disaster. 6It is not only young artists who suffer, of course. The legendary pianist Vladimir Horowitz's nerves were famous. The great tenor Franco Corelli is another example. "They had to push him on stage," Soprano Renata Scotto recalled.Actually, success can make things worse. "In the beginning of your career, when you're scared to death, nobody knows who you are, and they don't have any expectations," Soprano June Anderson said. "There's less to lose. Later on, when you're known, p.eople are coming to see you, and they have certain expectations. You have a lot to lose. "Anderson added, "I never stop being nervous until I've sung my last note. "词汇:veteran adj.经验丰富的 jittery adj.紧张不安的mentor n.指导者soprano n.女高音;女高音歌手cellist n.大提琴演奏家abdominal adj.腹部的fallible adj.易犯错误的tenor n.男高音注释:1.Stage Fright:怯场2.The veteran cellist Mstislav Rostropovich tripped him purposely to cure him of pre—performance panic.资深大提琴家Mstislav Rostropovich故意把Vladimir Feltsman绊倒,因而治愈了他的上台前的恐惧症。

2014全国职称英语考试教材理工类新增文章

2014全国职称英语理工新增文章第二部分阅读判断第八篇What Is a Dream? For centuries, people have wondered about the strange things that they dream about. Some psychologists say that this nighttime activity of the mind has no special meaning. Others, however, think that dreams are an important part of our lives. In fact, many experts believe that dreams can tell us about a person‟s mind and emotions. Before modern times, many people thought that dreams contained messages from God. It was only in the twentieth century that people started to study dreams in a scientific way.The Austrian psychologist, Sigmund Freud1,was probably the first person to study dreams scientifically. In his famous book, The interpretation of Dreams (1900), Freud wrote that dreams are an expression of a person‟s wishes. He believed that dreams allow people to express the feelings, thoughts, and fears that they are afraid to express in real life. The Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung2was once a student of Freud‟s. Jung, however, had a different idea about dreams. Jung believed that the purpose of a dream was to communicate a message to the dreamer. He thought people could learn more about themselves by thinking about their dreams. For example, people who dream about falling may learn that they have too high an opinion of themselves. On the other hand, people who dream about being heroes may learn that they think too little of themselves.Modern-day psychologists continue to develop theories about dreams. For example, psychologist William Domhoff from the University of California, Santa Cruz, believes that dreams are tightly linked to a person‟s daily life, thoughts, and behavior. A criminal, for example, might dream about crime.Domhoff believes that there is a connection between dreams and age. His research shows that children do not dream as much as adults. According to Domhoff, dreaming is a mental skill that needs time to develop. He has also found a link between dreams and gender. His studies show that the dreams of men and women are different. For example, the people in men‟s dreams are often other men, and the dreams often involve fighting. This is not true of women‟s dreams.3 Domhoff found this gender difference in the dreams of people from 11 cultures around the world, including both modern and traditional ones. Can dreams help us understand ourselves? Psychologists continue to try to answer this question in different ways. However, one thing they agree on this: If you dream that something terrible is going to occur, you shouldn‟t panic. The dream may have meaning, but it does not mean that some terrible event will actually take place. It‟s important to remember that the world of dreams is not the real world.词汇:psychologist / saɪˈkɔlədʒɪst / n.

He placed everything in his basket and went to the checkout. The young shop assistant told him the total price, $. the boy was instantly disappointed and said he had only been given $20. He took out one thing at a time until he got down to his $20. With eyes full of tears, he asked if he could phone his mum to pick him up. When he got through, it appeared that even this was inconvenient for his mother. He bit hard on his lip to stop the tears and walked outside to wait on the bench in front of the shop. This was all too much for the young assistant who had served him and she said, “ I wish I could afford to pay for the rest of his things.” One of the other girls said she had a few dollars. Then two others said they could help as well. These four young girls pooled their money and found that they had more than enough money for the boy’s extra purchases. When they close late in the afternoon, other flowers open.Biological rhythms(生物节律), like the opening and closing of flowers, happen all over nature. But not all of them are daily rhythms. Some, like the beating of our heart, happen every second. 26Scientists use the term biological clock to describe the timing that controls biological rhythms. 27 In some animals it is probably controlled by the brain. In plants and other living things that have no brain, it must be something else. The migration of animals happens when a signal is sent out. For example, when days become shorter, birds leave the northern parts of the world and fly south where it is warm. 28Humans also have biological clocks that control their daily rhythms. When people travel by plane from one continent to another, they often cross many time zones. Their internal clocks don’t seem to work correctly. We call this jet lag(时差). 29 People who work night shifts also have problems with their biological clocks. They may not be as active as people who work during the daytime.Biological clocks control many rhythms of life. 30 Doctors are looking for new ways to make travelling more comfortable and medical treatment more effective.第五部分:填词补文(10*)Life is DifficultWhat makes life difficult is that the process of facing and solving problems is a painful one. 2014年职称英语 阅读判断(1) Inventor of LED

第一篇Inventor of LEDWhen Nick Holonyak set out to create a new kind of visible lighting using semiconductor alloys, his colleagues thought he was unrealistic. Today, his discovery of light-emitting diodes, or1 LEDs, are used in everything from DVDs to alarm clocks to airports. Dozens of his students have continued his work, developing lighting used in traffic lights and other everyday technology. On April 23, 2004, Holonyak received the $500,000 Lemelson-MIT Prize at a ceremony in Washington. This marks the 10th year that the Lemelson-MIT Program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has given the award to prominent inventors.“Any time you get an award, big or little2, it’s always a surprise.” Holonyak said.Holonyak, 75, was a student of John Bardeen, an inventor of the transistor, in the early 1950s. After graduate school3, Holonyak worked at Bell Labs. He later went to General Electric4, where he invented a switch now widely used in house dimmer switches5.Later, Holonyak started looking into how semiconductors could be used to generate light. But while his colleagues were looking at how to generate invisible light, he wanted to generate visible light. The LEDs he invented in 1962 now last about 10 times longer than incandescent bulbs, and are more environmentally friendly and cost effective. Holonyak, now a professor of electrical and computer engineering and physics at the University of Illinois, said he suspected that LEDs would become as commonplace as they are today, but didn’t re alize how many uses they would have.“You don’t know in the beginning. You think you’re doing something important, you think it’s worth doing, but you really can’t tell what the big payoff is going to be, and when, and how. You just don’t know.” he said. The Lemelson-MIT Program also recognized Edith Flanigen, 75, with the $100,000 Lemelson-MIT Lifetime Achievement Award for her work on a new generation of “molecular sieves,” that can separate molecules by size. 筛注释:1. or:即2. big or little:不论是大是小3. after graduate school:从研究生院毕业之后4.
