The members in the society can get news easily from News Channels and thus keep themselves informed of what’s happening around.Like, my grandfather watches News on TV every day just to keep up with the latest events. Besides, television can be a kind of entertainment. People can watch different shows on TV such as funny talk shows and soap operas. I have many friends who like watching Late show with David Letterman and some other friends like watching TV series such as Lost and Friends. They all consider TV as a good way of relaxing themselves and of killing time. So, with the news and same TV programs, people in a society share a lot of things that they can talk about in any event. Therefore, society actually benefits from TV. Reading Part:Letter in the Centerville College News The administration has announced plans to acquire a new sculpture for campus. We should all oppose this plan. Theuniversity’s poor financial condition led it to increase the price for campus housing and tuition by 15% this past year. Surely then it is in no financial position to purchase such an expensive sculpture. Moreover, just look at the sculpture: several 60-foot long steel plates, jutting out of the earth at odd angles! It’s just so large, it’ll take up all the green space in front of the campus cen ter! This is public space that should be reserved for students to use. Listening Part:Now listen to two students discussing the opinion expressed in the letter.(man) Did you see Paul’s letter in the paper about the new sculpture?(woman) Yeah, but it was totally unconvincing. His reasons for opposing the plan are just totally o ff. I am glad that we’ll finally have some nice art on campus. I’d like to shake the donor ’s hand and say “thank you.”(man) What do you mean the donor?(woman) You didn't know? An anonymous donor is paying the bill for most of the sculpture.(man) Not the university?(woman) No! His assumptions about who’s paying are all wrong!(man) Still, I wonder if he has a point about the space it’ll take up?(woman) Well, you know why Paul is upset. He an d his friends are always out there on the lawn right where the sculpture will be, kicking around the soccer ball. Now they’ll just hav e to use another part of the campus to play.(man) Oh! So he just doesn't want to have to move.(woman) Yeah! For him, it’s sculpture versus convenience. Question:Explain why the woman disagrees with the reasons expressed in the letter. Tips1. Reading key(1.1) Proposal: student opposing school’s plan of acquiring a new sculpture(1.2) Reason 1: expensive, waste of money(1.3) Reason 2: large, takes up too much space2. Listening key(2.1) The woman disagrees with it(2.2) Reason 1: the school isn’t paying(2.2.1) Details: a donor is paying for the sculpture, nice to have art on campus(2.3) Reason 2: Paul is upset for not wanting to move(2.3.1) Details: he and his friends are always on the lawn kicking a soccer ball, they don’t want to move, it’s sculpture vs. convenient for Paul The writer of the letter opposes the university’s plan to acquire a new sculpture because the university’s financial condi tion is poor and the sculpture is so large that it’ll take up all the green space in front of the campus center. The woman in the conversation thinks the two reasons are totally unconvincing. Thewoman says it’s an anonymous donor who pays the bill of the sculpture not the university so there is no need to worry about the university’s financial condition. As for the point about the space, the woman thinks Paul, the writer of the letter, always plays soccer with his friends on the lawn where the sculpture will be. She thinks Paul just doesn’t want to move to another place. For him, it’s convenience versus sculpture. Reading Part:GroupthinkOne process by which groups may make bad or irrational decisions is known as groupthink. Individual members of a group attempt to conform their opinions to what they believe to be the group consensus even though the result may be negative. There are many reasons why groupthink happens. These include the desire to be liked, fear of losing a job, or even not wanting to be the one employee delaying a decision that seems inevitable. These kinds of implicit pressures to conform lead group members to ultimately make decisions that each, by himself or herself, might normally not make. Listening Part:Now listen to part of a lecture on this topic in a business management class.(male professor)So, let me tell you about my own experiences when I was working for a computer company a couple of years ago.So, one day a co-worker and I suggested we should give our computers a design make-over: make them look more up-to-date. Market research was showing that new customers said they would be more interested in buying our computers if they looked cooler. Our technology was advanced but the outside design looked really old-fashioned.At first, more than half the group supported us. There were a few senior managers here who didn’t support the d esign change. One o f the senior manager said, “Our focus has always been on technology, changing the look is an unnecessary cost.”Almost immediately, some of our supporters changed their minds! Even my co-worker changed his mind! When I asked him why after the meeting, he told me he didn’t want to make a bad impression on the senior managers. He thought that disagreeing with them might jeopardize his chances of getting a promotion by not looking like a team-player.What about me? I hate to admit it, but, after a few hours of discussion, I started wondering if it was worth everyone’s time to argue about this? As more people sided with the senior management, I started to feel that I was the only one holding up the vote. Everyone else seemed to think change wasn’t necessary. I voted against my own idea in the end.So we unanimously decided to stay with the current old-looking design. But this decision ended up costing us a lot of money. That same year, our competitorcame out with a new design that attracted some of our customers and prevented us from profiting from new customers. Question:Explain groupthink and its effects. Using the example of the computer company. 1. Reading keys(1.1) Term: groupthink(1.2) Definition: sometimes people make bad or irrational decision within a group(1.3) Why do we do it?(1.3.1) Desire to be liked, fear of losing a job(1.3.2) Not wanting to be the only one that’s holding up the vote2. Listening keys(2.1) Professor and coworker wanted to change the look of their computer(2.2) Manager disagreed(2.3) Coworker changed his mind(2.3.1) Did not want to leave a bad impression on the managers(2.4) Professor changed his mind as well(2.4.1) Did not want to be the only one that’s holding up the vote(2.5) They were all wrong(2.5.1) A competitor came out with a new design that attracted many costumers托福TPO1口语task4范文:The professor talks about groupthink which means sometimes people would make a bad decision as a group. In the example, the professor and hisco-worker thought they need to change the look of their computers, but managers disagreed. So his co-worker changed his mind because he didn't want to leave a bad impression on the managers by not looking like a team player. In the end, the professor changed his mind too, because he didn't want to be the only person that’s holding up the vote. But they were all wrong, the same year, a competitor came out with a new design that attracted many of their customers. Listening Part:Now listen to a conversation between two students.(man) Hey, Mary, how’s your volunteer work going? You’re still involved in that after-school program with the elementary kids?(woman) Yeah, but I’ve got a problem. I am supposed to be driving a bunch of them to the zoo tomorrow.(man) Yeah?(woman) And I was supposed to rent a van for the trip. But I waited too long to call the rental agency to reserve one.(man) Oh!(woman) Now it turns out they don’t have any vans available for tomorrow.I don’t know what to do? These kids will be really disappointed if their trip gets cancelled.(man) Hmmm, well, doesn’t one of your friends on campus have a car? I mean, couldn’t you borrow it for the day?(woman) Yeah, probably, but I’d need to borrow two cars or there wouldn’t be enough space for all the kids.(man) Um, hum.(woman) That’s why I was going to rent the van. And then I’d need to find somebody else to drive, too. I can’t drive two cars b y myself.(man) Yeah, that’s true. Well, I am sure you can probably find a volunteer or if you wanted to save yourself the trouble of hunting down a second driver, what about public transportation? Check the bus schedule, I think there’s a bus line that goes right past the zoo.(woman) Yeah, that’s a possibility, but I don’t know, it might be a real challenge supervising the kids on the bus.(man) Ha, ha…(woman) Sometimes they are a handful when they get excited. It’s an option, though. Question:The speakers discuss two possible solutions to the woman’s problem. Briefly summarize the problem then state which solution you recommend and explain why. 1. Listening keys(1.1) Problem: the woman needs to drive some kids to the zoo, but waited to long to rent a van(1.2) First solution: borrow two cars and get a second driver(1.2.1) Pro: volunteers are not hard to find(1.2.2) Con: troublesome(1.3) Second solution: take the kids to the zoo by bus(1.3.1) Pro: there’s bus that goes right past the zoo(1.3.2) Con: not easy to supervise kids on the bus, because they are a handful when they get excited托福TPO1口语task5 范文:The woman’s problem is that she needs to drive some kids to the zoo, but she waited too long to rent a van. There are two possible solutions. The first solution is to borrow two cars from her friends for the day. The second solution is to take the kids to the zoo by bus. I think that going to the zoo by bus is a better idea. First of all, there is a bus that goes right past the zoo, it will be very convenient for her and the kids because they don’t have to walk too far. Second, it is very troublesome to borrow two cars from her friends in that short period oftime, not to mention that she will have to find a second driver to drive the other car too. Listening Part:Now listen to part of a lecture in a psychology class. The professor is discussing the mathematical capabilities of babies.(female professor)Scientists have learned some interesting things about the intellectual abilities of babies. They say there’s evidence th at babies as young as five months old can do basic arithmetic, that they can add. Scientists think babies know one plus one equals two and not one. The evidence is indirect because obviously you can’t ask a five-month old baby to add up some numbers for you.So they devised an experiment where, um, in this experiment a baby is shown a doll on a table. Ok, so the baby looks at the doll. Then the researcher lowers a screen in front of the doll, so now the doll is hidden behind the screen. But the baby has already seen the doll and, so, knows it’s there. Well, then the researcher takes a second doll and very obviously places it behind the screen with the first one. Ok, so now you have two dolls behind the screen, right?Well, no, cause what the researcher did was they secretly took away one of the dolls. And then when they raised the screen back up, the baby, well, it expects to see two dolls, right? But there’s only one there! And guess what? The baby surprised! It expects two but it only sees one. How could the researchers tell thatthe baby surprised? Well, they recorded the baby’s eye movement on camera. And we know that when a baby is surprised by something, a loud noise or an unexpected flash of light maybe, it stares at where the noise or light is coming from. And that’s what the babies in the experiment did. They stared, cause the babies know if you add one doll and one doll, you should have two dolls. So when it sees one doll, then it stares because it’s surprised. Question:Using the research described by the professor, explain what scientists have learned about the mathematical abilities of babies. 1. Listening keys(1.1) Main idea: Babies as young as five month old can do basic math(1.2) Example (study)(1.2.1) A baby is shown a doll on a table(1.2.2) A screen is lowered between the baby and the doll(1.2.3) A second doll is very obviously placed behind the screen(1.2.4) One of the dolls is secretly taken away(1.2.5) Screen is raised back up(1.2.6) Baby is surprised to see one doll, because it’s expecting to see two(1.2.7) We know it’s surprised because it stared(1.2.8) When a baby is surprised, it would stare托福TPO1口语task6 范文:Research suggests that babies as young as five month old can do some basic math. The professor gives us a study to confirm the suggestion is true. In the study, a baby is shown a doll on a table. Then the researcher lowers a screen in front of the doll, and puts a second doll behind the screen. But at the same time, they secretly take away one doll. When the screen is raised back up, the baby’s surprised to see only one doll on the table instead of two. The researchers know it’s surprised, because babies stare when surprised. This is how they confirmed that a babies know one plus one equals two, not one.。

9. It‘s my treat this time.
10. When is the most convenient time for you? Group discussionTopic 1: Physical AttractivenessIt has become a self-fulfilling prophecy. The popular television series Friends played on anorexic chic in an ad which was soon pulled. In some ways, we all have distorted views of what is beautiful. And the repeated exposure to a particular image teaches you to like that particular image. And we have become so used to seeing extremely thin women that we have learned to think that this is what is beautiful. The mystique of thin began with the arrival of the British model Twiggy in the late 1960s. Standing five feet six inches tall, she weighed only 91 pounds and was dubbed Britain‘s top mini model. Since then, fashion models have become increasingly thinner, with body weights nearly 25 percent less than the average American woman who weighs 140 pounds.I think there are two primary things going on right now with the cultural availability of eating disorders. First, the whole society is involved in the perfection game, alright, that we all can fix our bodies, make our bodies over. And then, I think, among young women, they are increasingly tuned in to a celebrity culture where the models‘ and actresses‘ bodies are considerably thinner than they have ever been in the past. This is very seductive and hard for young girls to resist. This is not about illness. This is about idealized beauty and perfection of a certain type. These plus-size models are boldly challenging contemporary ideals of beauty. Ranging from size 12 to 18 they are much more in tune with the average American woman. Now a plus-size icon, Kate Dillon started out as a skinny model.I think it happens to everybody at some point where you feel one way about yourself. And that your initial, your intuition about who you are is that you‘re a good person, that you‘re beautiful, that you‘re strong, that you‘re capable. And then at some point it‘s met with an outside force that‘s telling you, ―no, you‘re none of those things.‖I remember getting ready for my first day of Junior High. And I was sitting at my mirror, putting on my electric blue mascara and my frosted pink lipstick. And I was thinking I was like, ―yeah, I‘m fine. I‘m looking good.‖ You know? And when I got to school, it was just, they were just horrible to me, telling me I was fat. And whether it was in PE or coming home on the bus every day, they‘d stand up, and they would jump up and down, and they would chant, ―overweight Kate, overweight Kate‖. And I remember just like, you know, I‘m like sitting in the front seat. I would always wear these massive sweaters, and I was sitting in the front seat, and just like trying so hard not to cry, because I was so embarrassed and horrified.Topic 2: Inner BeautyI believe in mystery.I believe in family.I believe in being who I am.I believe in the power of failure. And I believe normal life is extraordinary. This I believe. I‘m Jay Allison for This I Believe. Our essay this week comes from our collaboration with USA Weekend from their call-out to readers to submit statements of their core beliefs.Lisa Sandin lives in Big Rabbits Michigan where she is raising her kids. And when she read about our project, she immediately began to write of her belief that started to develop the day she was born. Here‘s Lisa Sandi with her essay for This I Believe.I believe I am not my body. Everyday we see images of perfect bodies we can never have. And we become convinced our bodies are who we are. Passing through puberty into adulthood and now into middle age, I‘ve wasted a lot of time lamenting the size of my hips, the gray in my hair and the lines in my face. Finally as I approach my fifties, I believe my parents were right all along. I am not my body.I was born in 1959 at the tail-end of the baby boom. Unfortunately, I arrived without all my body parts fully intact. My left arm is a short stub with a small hand and three fingers reminiscent of a thalidomide defect. To my good fortune, I had superb parents. They were fighters who struck ―I can‘t‖ from my vocabulary and replace it with ―I will find a way‖. They believed the development of the mind, heart and soul determined who you are and who you will become. My body was not to be used as an excuse. Instead, it was a catalyst. My body was not neglected though. It endured surgery; it was dragged to physical therapy and to swimming and finally to Yoga. But it was not the focus of my life. I was taught to respect my body but to remember it was only a vehicle that carried the important things, my brain and soul. Moreover, I was taught that the bodies come in all shapes, colors and sizes and that everyone was struggling in some way with their physical inadequacies. Infomercials have convinced me this must be true although through adolescence I found it difficult to believe the cheerleading squad had any self-doubts.In my alternatively formed bodies, I have learned lessons about patience, determination, frustration and success. This body can‘t play the piano or climb rock walls. But it taught all the neighborhood kids to eat with their feet, a skill it learned in the children‘s hospital. Eventually I learned to tie shoes, crossed the stage to pick up a college diploma, backpacked through Europe and changed my baby‘s diapers. Some people think I am my body and treat me with prejudice or pity. Some are just curious. It took years but I have learned to ignore the stares and just smile back. My body has taught me to respect my fellow humans, even the thin able-bodied beautiful ones. I am my words, my ideas and my actions. I am filled with love, humor, ambition and intelligence. This I believe. I am your fellow human being and, like you, I am so much more than a body.Exercise: Discuss the following questions.1. Describe a stereotypical beautiful person in your culture. In what ways do you thinkdifferent cultures can affect people‘s understanding of beauty?2. Is it better to be physically attractive or intelligent? Is it better to be physically attractiveor wealthy? Does beauty affect one's success in life?3. What personality trait is the most important for inner beauty? How do you define beauty, using your own words?Unit 2 BiodiversityII. Useful sentences in speaking1. Take your time.

Speaking Part 1 Trees
IELTS Speaking Part 1: Trees1. Do you like trees?Yeah, I do. And uh, I don’t really think there’s anything not to like about them! Youknow, they look nice, they add more colour to a place, um… so yeah I think treesare great!2. Are there any important trees in your country?Important trees?! Um… I’m really not sure to be honest! I mean, there probablyare some, yeah, but I’m not aware of any! Um… Actually, hang on a sec – I’ve justthought of one kind of tree, and that’s bamboo, which I’d say is pretty importanthere in China, first of all, because a lot of stuff’s made out of bamboo here, likechopsticks for example, and also because it’s closely tied to Chinese culture. Forinstance, bamboo appears quite a lot in Chinese art. So um, yeah, I’d say bamboois probably the most important kind of tree here.hang on a sec = wait a second (“sec” is short for “second”)it’s closely tied to – it’s connected/related to3. Is there a forest near your hometown?Yeah I suppose there is, because there’s quite a lot of natural scenerysurrounding our city, much of which is covered with trees.much of which–其中很多If no:No there isn’t, at least not that I’m aware of. It’s mainly just farmland and smalltowns and villages around my hometown.at least not that I’m aware of–反正我没有注意过farmland –农田4. Where can one find trees in your country? All over the place! For example in the cities, you can find them in parks, and also alot of the streets are lined with trees. But I guess to find the most trees, you haveto venture out of the urban areas into the countryside, especially the hills andmountains, because these are the places which are stillin their natural state, andyou’ll find that many of the mountainous areas are covered with trees. All over the place–到处都有lined with trees-两旁种着树venture out– go out (有点意味”着冒险外出”)in their natural state-自然状态mountainous areas–山区5. Do you think places with trees attract more visitors than places with few trees?I guess it depends why the visitor is going to a certain place. So for instance, ifthey’re going to enjoy the natural environment and scenery, then yeah, I thinkhaving trees will obviously attract more visitors. But if the visitors are going for adifferent reason, for example to a famous tourist attraction or something, then Ithink trees aren’t really gonna have any impact on the number of visitors. Youknow, they don’t even enter the equation! So it’s kind of hard to generalize. It doesn’t enter the equation= it’s not a factor;一点也不算因素 (直接翻译为“不入方程”)it’s kind of hard to generalize–有点难概括6. Did you ever climb trees when you were a child?Yeah I did. I had great fun climbing trees when I was little. I really enjoyed it, and Ieven remember when my mum took me to buy new shoes, I always chose oneswith the best grip, because they would be the best for climbing trees in. So yeah, itwas something I really enjoyed doing. 7. Have you ever planted a tree? No, I can’t say that I have! First of all, I don’t think it’s that easy to do, cos you’vegot to find somewhere that sells tree seeds, and then you’ve got to find a suitableplace to plant one. So yeah, it’s not something I’ve ever done before.(Or:Yeah I have actually….(plus details…)8. Do you think more people should plant trees?Yeah, I think more people should. At least in theory it sounds like a good idea, although I don’t know how well it would actually work in practice. Cos I mean, youcan’t just go around planting trees anywhere! You know, there needs to be acertain amount of planning. So it might be better to give this responsibility to just alimited number of people who knew what they were doing.in theory-理论上in practice-事实上;做起来go around–到处9. Do you think trees are important?Yeah, I’d say they definitely are. I mean, first of all, if I’m not mistaken, they helpmake the air cleaner. I can’t remember the name of the actual process, but they’rebasically able to convert CO2 into oxygen, which we all need to breathe. So I thinkyou’d agree that’s pretty important! An also, as I mentioned earlier, they addgreenery to places and make them look nicer.if I’m not mistaken–如果我没错的话,add greenery–添加绿化10. Do you think we need to protect trees?Yeah, most definitely. You know, if all the news reports are true, trees are beingcut down at a pretty alarming rate! So, like, vast areas of rainforests are beingdestroyed for commercial purposes. And I don’t think anyone would argue the factthat if this goes on, it’s gonna lead to pretty dire consequences. So yeah, I thinkit’s vital that we protect trees, otherwise the state of our planet’s gonna get evenworse (than it already is)!most definitely–绝对是(even stronger than “definitely”)a pretty alarming rate-惊人的速度vast areas= huge areascommercial purposes-商业目的if this goes on=如果计息下去的话dire consequences– bad consequences,严重后果。

Questions for Oral Exam1.If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you want to goand why?I want to go to the Australia, where the air is fresh, the sky is very blue. And I want to go to the Sydney Opera House where I can see many world-famous performances. Another place I want to go in Australia is the Great Barrier Reef. The Great Barrier Reef is the largest coral reef system in the world.I can see the Reef by scuba, snorkel, sail boat, and immerse myself in this wonder of the world. Swimming with the fish and admiring the colours of the coral is a wonderful thing.2.What is an epidemic? Provide an example.Influenza is an acute respiratory infectious diseasecaused by influenza virus. The disease is highly contagious. The virus that causes the flu is contained in the respiratory excretions (the phlegm and mucus) of an infected person and is spread when people sneeze or cough. Even exhaled breath can contain microscopic droplets of the virus. When people inhale the virus, it enters the bloodstream and begins to attack healthy cells.Influenza causes fever, head-ache, body aches, extreme fatigue, sore throat, and other symptoms.Influenza often occurs suddenly and quickly spread.3.What are the important qualities that you are looking for in someonethat will one day become your husband/ wife?I hope my future husband to be honest. This is the most important quality of him. I can’t stand anyone lie to me, especially a man who will accompany with me all my life. I also hope him to honour our parents and to be a grateful man. And I wish him can help me with the housework. He may be an optimistic man never depressed for frustration. I expect my future husband is humorous, so he can add fun to our lives.4.Should doctors tell a patient if they have a terminal illness (if they aregoing to die)?Iwill tell the truth to the patients. I agree dying patients have a right to be well informed and to make decision by themselves about the medical choice and other options at the end of life. Nowadays, more people have an open attitude towards life and death. Awareness of dying enables the patient to have life planning following the principle of autonomy. We should not doubt the justification of telling the truth to the terminal patient, however the efficacy of truth telling should be considered more carefully.Tell the patients the truth, he or she knows it already. He or she can read it in the eyes of those he or she loves and who are caring for him or her.5.Is it ethical to perform different treatments on two patients with thesame symptoms?Yes. Sometimes, many diseases can be cured by several treatments. This situation is particularly obvious in the Chinese medicine.Treatment based on syndrome differentiation is a great feature of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). To cure the same disease, due to individual differences or pathology is different, or different stages of development, doctors can use different treatment. For example, Chinese medicine practitioners can use different treatment to cure the patients who have a headache according to their constitution, such as acupuncture, herbs.6.If you were to meet an intelligent life form from another planet, whatwould you most want to ask them?If I were to meet an intelligent life form from another planet,I would most want to ask them whether they can understand what I say .May be they would say yes. So our conversation can be continued. And then I want to ask them how they found our planet? How long did it take they came to earth? And what’s their purpose to come to earth? If they are friendly, we will welcome them to visit. And I am curious about what their planet is like.If it is a beautiful planet, I will ask them may I travel to there and how to get there.7. Should athletes be disqualified for marijuanause? Why or why not? Nope. There is little or no evidence that marijuana can enhance sporting performance, while there is evidence it could have a negative impact. It can slow reaction times, cause coordination problems, and reduce hand-eye coordination, none of which is going to increase an athlete's chances of victory. The WADA believe that their use by athletes can cause public relations problems for organized sports, which like to tout athletes as role models for youth. If officials don't sanction the athletes whosmoked marijuana, no one knew the athletes used it.8. Describe a lie that you have told to your parents. When I was a little girl, one day I went home after school, and I came across a toy in a shop. It was so beautiful that I wanted to buy it. But I knew my parents would not buy it for me, because I had so many toys. So I lied to my parents, telling them I wanted to buy a book and I used the money to buy the toy. After that I felt horrible and wanted to confess, so I told the truth, my parents were so happy I was honest.9. If you were on a sinking ship, and you could only save your spouse or your child, who would you save and why? This is a topic never stop to discuss. This question means that who is more important to you. Is your spouse or your child? It is very cruel to make a decision to save which one. If I met this situation, I would not make a decision immediately. But I will jump into the water without hesitation, and save one who is close to me. My husband and my child are equally important to me. If I hesitate for a moment, I maybe lose both of them.。
