All practical switch-mode converter topologies are derived from a switching power pole, showing their commonality. As a two-port system, with a voltage-port on one side and the current-port on the other, representing this power pole on an average basis as a controllable turns-ratio ideal transformer gives clear insight into waveform synthesis by PWM.An Integrative Approach to Teaching of Electric Drives as a First Course. This allows the teaching in a single semester of all subsystems that make up electric drives: electric machines, power electronics-based converters and feedback controllers. The use of space-vector theory, made approachable to undergraduates, reveals the physical basis of how ac machines operate and provides a clear understanding of how they ought to be controlled.Integration of Simulation and Hardware. In power electronics courses, use of PSpice will be demonstrated for analysis and design of converters and their control. Use of MATLAB and Simulink will be demonstrated for simulating electric drives, and for integrating a DSP-based, 42-V hardware laboratory (in which nearly 70 US universities have shown interest in collaboration) for electric drives and power electronics.Tutorial 2:Structures, Operations, and Applications of Fuel Cells and Their Power Electronics InterfaceCairns Convention Centre 8:30 am - 12:00 noon Presenter: A. Major types of fuel cellsincluding Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells (PEMFC), Alkaline Fuel Cells (AFC), Solid-Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFC), Phosphoric Acid Fuel Cells (PAFC), Molten Carbonate Fuel Cells (MCFC), and Direct Methanol Fuel Cells (DMFC) are explained. Their applications in the automotive industry including electric and hybrid electric vehicles, in the aerospace industry, in utility systems including distributed generation and cogeneration, in residential and commercial buildings, and in portable devices are described as well. In addition, current status and future trends in the areas of power electronics for fuel cell applications will be explained. Power electronics plays an important role in providing an interface between the fuel cell and the load. Furthermore, power electronic converters ensure that the power is reliably and efficiently delivered to the load in the required DC or AC forms.. It will also discuss the possibilities to save energy in adjustable speed drives with induction motors and in some cases permanent magnet motors. The typical power range will be below 10 kW.The low-cost topologies include B2 - B4 - B6 inverters with different modulation strategies for torque-ripple reduction. Discussion will include how a combination of topology and modulation can reduce the number of sensors.Models of induction and permanent magnet motors will be used to derive control methods to improve the efficiency of the whole drive. Stability of the drive and implementation aspects are explained. The potential energy saving in different applications will be discussed. Different drive systems will be compared both in type and power rating.
