One of my father’s friends, Bernie, was a rich businessman, who owned a large store in St. Paul.Every summer, when the first watermelons arrived, Bernie would call. Dad and I would go to Bernie’s place. We’d sit on the edge of the dock(码头), feet dangling(摇晃), and got ready for a big meal.Bernie would take his knife, cut our first watermelon, hand us both a big piece and sit down next to us. Then we’d bu ry our faces in watermelon, eating only the heart—the reddest, juiciest, firmest, sweetest, most seed-free part—and throw away the rest.Bernie was my father’s idea o f a rich man. I always thought it was because he was such a successful businessman. Years later, I realized that it was not Bernie’s wealth itself but his way of dealing with it that my father liked. Bernie knew how to stop working, get together with friends and eat only the heart of the watermelon. What I learned from Bernie is that being rich is a state of mind. Some of us, no matter how much money we have, will never be free enough to eat only the heart of the watermelon. If you don’t take the time to da ngle your feet over the dock and enjoy life’s small pleasure, your work is probably hurting your life. For many years, I forgot that lesson I’d learned as a kid on the loading dock. I was too busy making all the money I could.Well, I’ve relearned it. I ho pe I have time left to enjoy the success of others and to take pleasure in the day. That’s the heart of the watermelon. I have learned again to throw t he rest away.1. We learned from the second paragraph that the writer and his father were feeling ______.A. relaxedB. worriedC. hungryD. proud2. 2019中考英语二轮复习 阅读理解优练(二)
2019中考英语阅读理解优练(二)Passage A(2019中考选练)Disasters happen all the time somewhere in the world. Are you ready if one hits your neighborhood next week? Find out what you need to do now before it is too late. Let’s take an earthquake for example.During an earthquake, get under a strong object like the kitchen table. Don’t leave the building during the shaking, or you might be hurt by falling objects from the outside of the building. When you are in bed during the night and an earthquake happens, simply roll off the bed. There will be a safe void around the bed.If you are watching TV and you cannot easily run away by getting out through the door or window, then lie down and curl up(蜷伏) next to a sofa, or a large chair.Never go to the stairs. The stairs are likely part of the building to be broken. Even if the stairs are not destroyed by the earthquake, they may fall down later when people run down.Try to get into an open area away from trees, buildings, walls, advertisement boards and power lines if you are outdoors. If you are driving when an earthquake suddenly happens, just stay in your car until the shaking ends. However, if the footbridge falls and breaks your car,get out of it and sit or lie next to it. All the broken cars have voids 3 feet high next to it.1. What should you do if you are in a building when an earthquake happens?A. Rush out quicklyB. Sit in the kitchenC. Stay below strong objectsD. Go down the stairs2. The underlined word “void” in Paragraph 3 means“_______”.A. spaceB. seatC.distance D. sign3. When you are outdoors during an earthquake, you should go to _______.4. By the middle 1950s, he had become one of the best-loved and most successful children's book writers in the world. His books are very popular with young readers. They enjoy the invented words and the pictures of unusual funny animals and plants. In 1954, life magazine published(刊登) a report about school children who could not read. The report said many children's books were not interesting. Doctor Seuss strongly hoped to help children and decided to write books that were interesting and easy to read. He used words with the same ending sound, like fish and wish. He did not receive training in art. Yet, he drew the pictures for most of his books. In 1957, Dr. Seuss wrote The Cat in the Hat. He used less than 230 words to write the book and even a six-year-old should be able to read it. It was a fun story and easy to read. Children loved it. Their parents loved it, too. Today it is still one of the stories they like best. The success of The Cat in the Hat made him want to write more books for children. In 1960, he wrote a book using less than fifty words. The book is called Green Eggs and Ham.In 1984, Doctor Seuss won a Pulitzer Prize (普利策奖). He was honored for the education and enjoyment his books provided American children and their parents. He died at the age of 87, but his influence remains. Millions of his books have been sold worldwide. People say his books helped change the way American children learned to read. Yet, his books are loved by people of all ages. Doctor Seuss once said, "I do not write for children. I write for people.( )11. High winds and lots of rain can destroy a city in less than an hour. A big cyclone, named cyclone Debbie, hit Australia's east coast at the end of March. The wind was as fast as 236 km/h and destroyed houses, trees, cars and boats. Sea levels rose and flooded coastal towns. While rivers also flooded. Many cities near rivers went underwater.Hundreds of thousands of people had to leave their homes and farms, at least 8 people died, reported Courier Mail. The cyclone lasted for about 3 days. But the flooding was still happening 2 weeks later. Some cities never recover from a cyclone, while it takes years to rebuild.A tropical cyclone begins when a group of thunderstorms meet over warm, tropical waters. Lots of air and water is sucked into clouds from the ocean. Because the earth is rotating, the clouds start to spiral(螺旋式上升). That is why tropical cyclone has curved(使成弧形) shape when you see it on a map. For this reason, tropical cyclone can not form near Equator(赤道) because earth's rotation is not strong enough there. When the wind speed increases to 120 km/h, it changes from a tropical cyclone to a hurricane, typhoon or cyclone. So what is the difference between a cyclone, a hurricane, a typhoon? The answer is actually quite simple. All three are the same. We just use different names for these storms in different places. In the Atlantic and Northeast Pacific Ocean around the US, the term hurricane is used. The same type of storm in the North Pacific Ocean near China is called typhoon. Cyclones occur in the South Pacific and Indian Ocean near Australia.1. When the wind speed increases to ________, it changes from a tropical cyclone toa hurricane.A. 2 km/mB. 3 km/mC. 4 km/sD. 5 km/s2.
抓住四个"W"和一个"H",就是边读边用铅笔做些标记,把What (事件),When (时间),Where(地点),Why(原因),How(经过)划出来。

The festival spread to China as early as the 1980s and was widely accepted. Why did a foreign festival become popular in China? In fact,Chinese traditional culture has always encouraged filial(孝顺的) devotion to parents. There are many stories which show filial respect in ancient China. For example, the story of “Taste Liquid(液体的) Medicine for Mother” tells us the filial virtue(美德) of Emperor Wen of the Western Han dynasty. His mother had been sick for three years. He often stayed up by her bedside and cared for her day and night. He tasted the liquid medicine first before she drank it. Also, mother love is a repeated subject in Chinese ancient poems, like “Song of the Parting Son” by Meng Jiao,a poet of the Tang dynasty. Now this poem is still a must in the school textbooks. Children in China are brought up with the education of filial devotion. On special days, people often use roses or forgetmenotes to express love. Carnations are considered as the perfect flowers for mothers around the world, but few know that China has its own for mothers—the tiger lily.Love for mothers can have different ways of expression. What matters most is love, not the festival itself. What mothers trulywant is perhaps just a simple expression of love from their children.( )1. When did Mothers Day spread to China?A. In the 1920s.B. It's a chance for me to get away from real life. There's nothing better than being lost in a story unless,of course, someone decides to break down the moment.Whether at a cinema or a huge theatre, someone usually decides to treat the place like their own home! There is an accepted way of behaving at the cinema which some people don't seem to understand. To start with, some people always turn up late, causing you to rise from your seat to allow them to go past. Then, when you want to enjoy the surroundsound effects, someone begins to enjoy their drinks and popcorn and thus makes a lot of noises. And what I can't stand most is people who decide to chat to their friends, sometimes not even about the film.I'm not alone in this situation. Simon Mayo,a film critic at the BBC,experienced a “new low” during a film. He says,“ The woman in front of me got a mirror out, then her boyfriend got a phone out and used the light on it to allow her to do her makeup!”Simon has helped to create a list of rules on how moviegoers should behave at the cinema. One of them is no use of mobile phones, and another is not to take your shoes off—a most serious offence(冒犯) !Of course, when we have paid for a ticket,we feel it is our right to relax and enjoy the film in the way we want to,but we mustn't forget our fellow moviegoers who want to enjoy the cinematic experience, too. The best choice for anyone wanting to break the rules of cinema manners is to get a DVD and watch it at home. But we all know that the best way to enjoy the art of cinematography is on the big screen.________.What about you? What annoys you about other people at the cinema?( )1. However, strictly speaking, Boxing Day is the first weekday after Christmas. Like Christmas Day, Boxing Day is a public holiday. This means it's a nonworking day in the whole of Britain. When Boxing Day falls on a Saturday or Sunday, the following Monday is the public holiday. The exact origin(起源) of the holiday is unclear. One of the thoughts is that during the Middle Ages, when great sailing shipswere setting off to discover new land, a Christmas Box was placed by a priest (神父) on each ship. Those sailors who wanted to ensure a safe return would drop money into the box. It was sealed_up and kept on board until the ship came home safely. Then the box was handed over to the priest in the exchange for the saying of a Mass of thanks for the success of the sailing. The priest wouldn't open it to share the contents with the poor until Christmas. One more thought is about the “Alms Box” placed in every church on Christmas Day. Worshippers (做礼拜的人) put gifts for the poor into it. These boxes were always opened the day after Christmas, that is why that day became known as Boxing Day.Today, many businesses, organizations and families try to keep the traditional spirit of Boxing Day alive by donating (捐赠) their time, services and money to aid Food Banks, providing gifts for the poor, or helping families in need. Besides, spending time with family and shopping are popular Boxing Day activities now.( )1. If Christmas Day is on a Saturday, Boxing Day will be celebrated on ________.A. December 25thB.
