Both of the two cultures are developed by rivers—the Yellow River in China and the Indus river in India. 2When the two mother rivers gave birth to the Eastern culture, another famous culture was brought up on the Mesopotamian Plain—the Mesopotamian Civilisation. This civilisation later on developed into the cultures of ancient Greece and Ancient Rome. 3 Like the Chinese culture, the European culture also crossed waters. When the British settled down in America, their culture went with them over the Atlantic Ocean. So the American culture doesn’t distinguish from the European culture a lot.4 Take the language system for example. In the East, most languages belong to the pictographic language while the Western languages are mostly based on the Latin system. Other causes like human race difference count as well. but what’s more, due tothe far distance and the steep areas between the East and the West, the two cultures seldom communicate until recent centuries. So they grew up totally in their own ways with almost no interference from the other. The differences are everywhere. 5 But different cultures make the world of the 21st century more colourful. The cultural gap should not be the obstacle (障碍) to the civilisation of human beings. It ought to be the motivation of our going farther.A. Let us work together to keep a variety of culture.B. One important thing is to learn about other cultures.C. And these two are well-known as the base of the European culture.D. At the same time. some other differences add to the cultural differences.E. This is because the culture systems are two separate systems on the wholeF. They helped the two cultures develop for centuries and form their own styles.G. 江苏英语新教材必修一U1 阅读能力训练一、阅读理解(A)My journey home from school is nothing special. The train's always busy but I usually find a seat and start reading or texting my friends, making sure, like everyone else, not to look at other people. But last Tuesday was different. I was happily listening to some new music when the train suddenly stopped. This wasn't unusual and I didn't think anything of it. Then after about five minutes, I noticed people were starting to get a bit angry. Fifteen minutes later, people started getting angrier. The longer the train stood still, the angrier people became until finally the announcement came: “We are sorry to announce that this train is delay ed(延误).That seemed to calm people down and so we all went back to what we were doing before, but soon there was another announcement: "It will be a long time before we get there. There was a large sigh throughout the carriage(车厢)but then something unexpected happened: complete strangers started talking to each other. I started chatting to a couple of young tourists. They were from Spain and they were traveling around the UK so I suggested some places they should visit. Next I really surprised myself by starting a conversation with a businesswoman. She was going to take three months to climb Qomolangma. It was great talking to her. Then I decided to get up and go for a walk down the train. I met a woman who had been a student at my school seven years before and knew lots of my teachers. While we were talking, we heard there was a patient in another part of the train who needed help and the woman from my school jumped into action. It turned out she was a nurse and when she came back, she was welcomed as a hero. Then, after two hours, we started moving again. Everyone clapped and cheered and some people, complete strangers three hours before, even hugged. I will never forget the day the train stopped and people started talking.1.How did the author do when the train suddenly stopped?A.He turned to the other passengers.B. He let out a long deep sigh.B.He paid no attention to it. D. He got angry at once.2.Why did the train stop?A.It broke down.B. It ran out of gas.B.The track was under repair. D. A previous train stopped working.3.What did the author talk about with the nurse?A.Their former teachers.B. Some famous tourist spots.B.Some stories of businesswomen. D. Their mountain-climbing experiences.4.Why did the author consider the journey unforgettable?A.He saved a person's life on the train.B. Talking to strangers made him happy.C. He met some classmates during the trip.D. It was the first time he had met with an accident.(B)Rumors (谣言): we've all heard some and we've all spread some. In more traditional times they shook entire families. Today, they travel differently because the way we share information has also changed. The fact is that rumors have great potential to upset things, whether socially or personally. We don't enjoy being on the receiving end of one, since they usually don't have good intentions. They are somewhat veiled (掩饰的) messages.Normally rumors are oral messages: word of mouth. The paradox (自相矛盾) is that there is no evidence to support rumors, but the more people share it, the more they see it as true. To finish explaining rumors, we think that they follow certain very clear laws. Secrecy: The source is unknown. There is also a proven phenomenon that human beings usually forget the source of a message before they forget its content. Certainty: We hardly question rumors simply because of the mental effort involved. On the other hand, no one likes to doubt a person who convinces us that the information they spread is true. Change: It acts like a tree. New rumors branch out to fill in the gaps left by the first rumor.Another property (属性) of rumors is that they tend to become viral. Each receiver is at the same time a potential transmitter (传输者) of the information. The receiver often adds their own opinion. Their manner and tone of transmitting it also changes it.How can we end rumors? The answer is as simple as it is impossible: preventing people from communicating. A more realistic response is equally difficult, although less than the first one. It is that we should be critical of the information we receive. We should ask ourselves if the source is reliable. Ask (if possible) the person you heard it from whether they also trust the information. We should also think about if the rumor benefits someone, and if that someone started the rumor. One rumor to be especially cautious of is a rumor about groups relatively unable to defend themselves. That's why we say, "History is always told by the winners." The first payment the defeated must make is to accept the victor's version of the story.1.What can we learn about rumors?A.We have all heard some and believed them.B.We're happy to be the receiving end of them.C.They may have negative influence on society.D.They often hide good intentions in the messages.2.How are rumours like a tree?A.Rumours keep changing, just as trees change their colour.B.Rumours are deeply rooted in reality, like tree roots in the earth.C.New rumours have gaps, like the space between tree branches.D.New rumours grow out of the original, like branches out of a trunk.3.What does the underlined word ‘viral’ in Para 4 probably mean?A.Something easily spread.B.Something acceptable.C.Something easily defended.D.Something beneficial.4. Which of the following may the author agree with?A. It is easy to prevent people from spreading rumors.B. People are often active in judging the rumors critically.C. We should think about the hidden message of the rumors.D. Stories told by the victors are usually better worth trusting.二、完形填空The leaves fluttered (飘动)over Josh's head. Suddenly, a few raindrops fall on your arms and before you know it, the sky opens up. Then you hear what sounds like thunder in the distance. What should you do? Your tent is close by and would offer shelter(庇护)from the pouring rain. There’s a campsite picnic shelter a few minutes down the path. And then you remember that your car is parked down the road. What’s your safest choice to make sure you and your family are safe? It’s a common question for many hikers and campers, especially when they’re camping during summer months. Heading to your car is almost always the safest choice. On the one hand your tent and a picnic shelter will keep you dry, but they offer little or no protection against lightning. Your car, on the other hand, will keep you dry and protect you from lightning strikes. Protecting yourself against possible lightning strikes is very important; lightning kills an average of 62 people in the US each year. If you keep all of the windows and doors closed in your car, you’ll be able to return to your campsite safely.Of course, if you’re backpacking(背包旅行), not car camping, and you’re deep in the woods, your car won’t be a good choice. So, what should you do if your car is far away and there’s no other sate shelter nearby? First, you’ll have to make sure that tree branches or other objects don’t fall on you or your campsite. Then you’ll have to get in a safe position to avoid lightning, or flash flood conditions. What else should you do?1. To avoid lightning in a storm, what are you supposed to do?A. Go into your tent quickly.B. Cook up the catch of the day over a campfire.C. Run into a campsite picnic shelter at once.D. Get into your car and return to your campsite later.2. What can we learn from Paragraph 2?A. Young people like backpacking best.B. Lightning is dangerous for campers.C. Car camping is a good choice for deep woods.D. Camping during summer is the most popular.3. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?A. It is important to learn to protect yourself when camping.B. Backpacking is not a good choice for campers.C. People should never camp deep in the woods.D. People should not go camping alone.4. What is the passage mainly about?A. What’s camping.B. The story has been told over and over again—not just in books, but in movies and television shows. To celebrate,New York City's Morgan Library & Museum has a special exhibition of the writer and the book. The reason for the success is that Doctor Frankenstein and his creature, the monster, live on in numerous remakes, shows, and even comic books.Mary Shelley's classic is one of the most famous horror stories of all time. But Frankenstein is so much more than that. It presents ideas and themes that are still important today. Knowing something about her suffering can help readers have a good knowledge of her work. Shelley wrote the book when she was only 18 years old. Andit relates to her own sad life. Her mother died 10 days after she gave birth to her. She knew what it meant to be a child without a mother. It is no surprise that Shelley wrote a story about a motherless creature that is very much alone in the world.Losing her mother shortly after her birth in 1797 was only part of her life story. When she had time, she would bring food and medicine to them. One morning she told her children about a family she had visited the day before. There was a man sick in bed, his wife, who took care of him and could not go out to work, and their little boy. 译林版必修第一册Unit2 阅读拓展练习1Ⅰ.阅读理解AWhen I was a little girl,I remember that when my dad was repairing something,he would ask me to hold the hammer,so we would have time for a conversation with each other.I never saw my dad drinking or taking a night out.All he did after work was taking care of his family.I grew up and left home for college and since then,my dad had been calling me every Sunday morning. And when I bought a house several years later,my dad painted it by himself in the fierce summer heat. All he asked was to talk to him,but I was too busy in those days.Four years ago,my dad visited me.He spent many hours putting together a swing for my daughter. He asked me to have a talk with him,but I had to prepare for a trip that weekend. One Sunday morning we had a telephone talk as usual.I noticed that my dad had forgotten some things that we discussed lately.I was in a hurry,so our conversation was short.Several hours later that day I received a call.My father was in hospital.Immediately I bought a plane ticket and on my way I was thinking about all the occasions I missed to have a talk with my dad.By the time I arrived at the hospital,my father had passed away. Now it was he who did not have time for a conversation with me.I realized how little I knew about my dad,his deepest thoughts and his dreams. After his death I learned much more about him and even more about myself. All he ever wanted was my time. And now he has all my attention every single day.1.When the author was a little girl, she .A.liked playing on the swingB.often talked with her fatherC.was good at repairing thingsD.learned to take care of her family2.When at college, the author .A.received a call from her father every Sunday morningB.phoned her father every Sunday morningC.asked her father to call her every SundayD.asked her father to talk with her3.Why did the author fail to have a talk with her father four years ago?A.She had got tired of talking with him.B.She was busy painting her house.C.Her daughter asked her to play.D.She was busy planning a trip.4.When did the author begin to regret missing the talks with her father?A.After her father’s sudden death.B.Many years after her father’s death.C.On her way to the hospital to see her father.D.As soon as she got the news that her father was ill.答案BADCBRobby was 11 when his mother dropped him off for his first piano lesson.I prefer students who begin at an earlier age.Robby insisted that it had always been his mother’s dream to hear him play the piano,so I took him in as a student.Robby tried and tried while I listened and encouraged him and gave him more instructions. But he just did not have any inborn ability.I only saw his mother from a distance. She always waved and smiled but never came in.Then one day Robby stopped coming to our lessons.I thought about calling him but I guessed he had decided to try something else.I was also glad that he stopped coming for the sake of my career. However, several weeks before the recital(演奏会) of my students,Robby came, telling me that he never stopped practicing and begged me to allow him to take part.I agreed but I made him perform last in the program,so I could always save his poor performance through my “curtain closer”.I was surprised when he announced that he had chosen one piece of Mozart’s.Never had I heard a piece of Mozart’s played so well by someone at his age. When he finished, everyone was cheering.I ran up and put my arms around Robby in joy.“I’ve never heard you play like that,Robby! How’d you do it?”“Well,Miss Hondorf.Do you remember I told you my mom was sick? Actually she died this morning. She was born deaf so tonight was the first time she could hear me play.I wanted to make it special.I knew I could.” That night,Robby was the teacher and I was the student. He taught me so many important things about life.5.Why did Robby stop coming to the piano lessons suddenly?A.He lost heart and believed that he would never make it.B.His mother was too sick to send him to the piano lessons.C.He thought his teacher disliked him.D.His mother died and he didn’t need to play any longer.6.Which statement is NOT true according to the passage?A.The writer thought playing the piano shouldn’t start too late.B.The writer thought that Robby had given up the piano lesson.C.The writer taught Robby carefully although he hadn’t a gift for music.D.No one else could play the piece of Mozart’s well.7.From the underlined sentence we can infer that .A.the writer looked down upon Robby and disliked himB.the writer thought Robby a bad advertisement for his teachingC.with Robby present, the other children couldn’t play wellD.the writer couldn’t teach so many students at a time8.What did the writer learn from Robby?A.The meaning of true love.B.The meaning of giving up necessarily.C.The meaning of being kind to teachers.D.The meaning of believing in teachers.答案BDBACA teenager needs to have a sense of independence in their life to feel secure. To some teenagers independence means a lot to them, and I think that some parents don’t allow their teenagers enough independence.Independence has something to do with freedom. Some kids are not allowed to go anywhere alone, and the only thing their schedule includes is going to school, coming home, going to sleep, and repeating the process the next day.Parents tend to be afraid that their kids can get hurt if they go outside into the world. But if parents control their kids too much, they may never learn to live on their own.The best way for a teenager to learn lessons is through experience.I think it is beneficial for teenagers to have freedom.Teenagers’ lack of freedom can also stop them from having good friendship at school. Some might say that this is a good thing, because it helps them focus more on their school work.I argue that this can only discourage them not to do their school work. Some parents do not allow their children to be around their friends outside the school, thinking that this will get them into trouble. But I don’t think so.Instead, isn’t this a good reason for parents to get their children a cellphone?Cellphones allow teenagers to stay in touch with their parents, and communicate better with their friends.Privacy is another issue between parents and their teenagers.Teenagers tend to enjoy relaxation by themselves in their own room. This also gives them a sense of independence. It oftenannoys teenagers when their parents enter their room when they are not at home.I know that my mom always goes in my room when I’m not at home, and this has brought me to the point where I have asked many times to get a lock on my door.9.What is the main idea of the second paragraph?A.Kids know how to live independently.B.Some parents allow their kids no freedom.C.It benefits teenagers to have freedom.D.Kids have a dull routine every day.10.How do teenagers usually feel when their parents enter their rooms in their absence? A.Disappointed. B.Lucky.C.Angry. D.Calm.11.The author hopes to have her door locked in order to .A.keep her father from reading her diaryB.prevent her mother entering her roomC.protect herself from any harmD.stop thieves from going in答案CCB七选五When your children become teenagers,it’s time to start considering an afterschool job.1 ,so why shouldn’t our children? When your child has a job,he/s her job correctly. An afterschool job is a good way to teach your teenager about responsibility.By allowing your teenagers to have an afterschool job you allow them to learn about money management. 2 ,they will have to manage how much money they can spend. They will realize that they can’t spend every dollar they make if they want to reach their goal. You are probably saying,“Teens will get into trouble whether they have a job or not.”3 .Depending on the distance from work to home, you could allow your children some extra time to get home after work. This will ensure that they don’t feel rushed but can still get home on time. It’s a good idea to show your teenagers that hard work is what it takes to finish everything in their lives. 4 .What will they expect when they are out on their own if they have never had to work hard for what they want?5 .All teenagers,no matter what their parents’financial situation is,should have a job. They will need the experience before they do get out in the real world.A.If they are saving up for their first carB.When they refuse to have an afterschool jobC.It is a good idea for all teenagers to have an afterschool jobD.Most of adults in the U.S.had a job during their teenage yearsE.They can’t learn the meaning of hard work if everything is handed to themF.Having an afterschool job will help your teenagers know their directionG.But it is less likely that your children will get into trouble if they are working five evenings a week1.D2.A3.G4.E5.C。

It was the Class of 1928 and their class motto was “Build for character, not for fame.”I’m pretty sure society has done quite the opposite. These days, we have people who are famous for simply being famous. They haven’t done anything particularly impressive, but they do take great selfies. We are all crazy about fame these days, mainly due to social media. All we want is to make people follow us friend us,like us or share our posts. We are nearly mad about fame.“Build for character not for fame.” is based or the belief that one is looking up andahead. That’s an encouraging idea, especially today, when most of us have our heads down, looking at the screens of our smartphones. Looking ahead and building for character take thought and intentionality. One can be intentional in building for fame as well, but fame often relies heavily on the right timing and connections as well as the creation of the base of fans and supporters. Character isn’t decided by the ideas of others. Character is built with self-discipline and the willingness to learn from difficulties. Character grows inside and needs no praise.Fame depends on people looking at you, while character is who you are when no one is looking at you. Fame often comes with jealousy—a feeling that time is running out or that someone better than you is coming to steal your fans. Character is marked by feeling fulfilled and being generous. Even if you know some freshmen(新生), you still feel nervous that you don't know any upperclassmen or teachers. How are you going to make friends among this sea of unknown faces? Most high schools hold a freshman orientation before school actually starts, which is helpful not only because you can know your way around the building and get to meet some of your teachers, but also because you get to meet fellow freshmen. That way when you show up on your first day of school, you may already recognise a few familiar faces. When you talk to your new classmates, you'll probably find that a lot of them are feeling just like you are. They're all new to the school and don't know what to expect. Talking about a common concern with them can help you develop friendships. The work in high school is something that freshmen are probably worried about. The work in high school builds on what you learnt in middle school giving you a more advanced knowledge of many subjects. So you may find you have more work to do or that it's a bit more challenging. If you ever find your work too difficult, teachers can give you extra help.High school also has more extracurricular activities than middle school does such as clubs, music and theatre groups and sports teams. This is a good time to explore your interests and try new things.High school gives you the chance to learn how to manage your time, to develop your social skills and interests, and more importantly to be more independent and responsible.1. 高中英语课外阅读(一)Captain who has it allCESC Fabregas appears to have it all. He is the star performer for top English premiership (英超) club Arsenal and a multimillionaire at the age of 21. If all of that wasn't enough, on November 24, Fabregas was appointed new captain of the club."It's a proud moment and a great honor," said the Spaniard (西班牙人). "But this is also a big responsibility. Together with my teammates, we have the spirit and commitment (承诺) to get back to winning and fulfill our potential."However, there are people who doubt that Fabregas is too young to shoulder the responsibility. But Arsene __, the Arsenal manager, said: "It's not especially linked with age. Most of the time, responsibilities make you grow, make you become more mature (成熟的) and you deal with the situation."Fabregas is one of rising talents among the young generation of players. He helped Spain to win the European Championship this year and has established himself as a key player for Arsenal. But he does not want to settle for just being a good footballer. He began a correspondence (函授) course in the equivalent (相当于) of A-levels (exams taken by students who want to go to university), fitting his studies around his football duties. "Thereare seven subjects, including math, science, Spanish, English and French. First I have to pass an exam. Then I have to do a course for one year and then I can go to university," he said.Fabregas has not returned to the classroom in the traditional sense. Teachers come to his home to teach him math and science — "they are the most difficult" — for four hours a week. He does some of his tutorials (辅导课) via webcam (摄像头). Much of his time will be spent studying at home or on the road. So, what is the motivation for this highly-paid young man with the football world at his feet? "I think it is good for the future," he said.高中英语课外阅读(二)Brazil's wonder kidIN football, nothing is more valuable than the wonder kid. Managers spend plenty of their time searching for these rare gems (宝石).Anderson Luis de Abreu Oliveira is one such gem from Brazil. He won the Tuttosport Golden Boy Trophy (奖杯) on December 7. The award is given to the best player in Europe under the age of 21.Anderson plays for Manchester United and he has already won the Premier League (英超) and the Champions League (冠军联赛) with his team. In fact, Anderson even scored a penalty (点球) in the Champions League final.”[He is] 20, with the decision-making, position-taking intelligence of a 30-year-old. Short at 1.76m, yet muscular (强健的) and rapid enough to win most physical battles,” writes Duncan Castles, reporter with Britain''s The Guardian newspaper. And Anderson is glowing (焕发) with self-confidence. ”Scared? I''ve never been scared of anything,” hesaid. ”When the subject is playing football, I''m not scared of anyone. You are there for the football; you are there to have fun, to play.”But in the eyes of Brazilian journalists, Anderson still needs time to mature (成熟). They described him as ”arrogant (傲慢的)”. ”He rolled up to the team''s London hotel in an expensive Audi R9, R&B blaring (鸣响) from the sound system and strode (大踏步) past reporters,” they said.Anderson is honest in his attitude toward money. ”Yes, I like money a lot. Who doesn''t?”.Anderson''s father died in 2001 and by the age of 14, his youth-team salary (薪水) in a local club in Brazil supported his mother, sister and two brothers. ”I became used to being a man very young. I was 15, but already thinking as if I was 22, 23 or 24 and making very tough decisions about my future. I had to help the family, but that was also a responsibility. And that I still do today and hope to be able to do for my family until I am 60.”高中英语课外阅读(三)Spears defines a generationTHE newest generation of American teenagers has been raised on a diet of YouTube, Facebook and American Idol. These inventions are harmless but when combined they have created a culture where teenagers want to be rich and famous and believe everyone should know everything about their lives. The spokesperson for this fame-hungry, talent-less generation is Britney Spears. At a young age, Spears seemed to have it all. She was starring on the Mickey Mouse Club TV show when she was 11. At 18, Spears released her debut album Baby One More Time. The album instantly made Spears a pop icon (偶像). She had millionsof dollars and was on top of the world. But as the saying goes, “the higher you are, the harder you fall.”With fame came an obsession (着魔) into Spears'' personal life. Photographers followed her everywhere she went. Eventually, she couldn''t take it anymore and she made a series of bad decisions. First, she married a high school friend. But the marriage only lasted a matter of hours. Then she married her back-up dancer, Kevin Federline, who was a known playboy. Then she shaved her head and suffered a big breakdown. She did all of this with the world watching. But then her father, Jamie, stepped in and took control. Spears took sometime away from the spotlight to get things in order. Now she is promoting her new album, Circus, which is a good word to describe her life. The CD is currently No 1 in America. It has been a crazy ride for Spears but when judging her, remember that she was once a sweet, young girl whom a lot of people thought they could make money off. Even with all she''s been through, she''s only 27 years old.So for any young person out there, who is posting videos on YouTube and dreaming about becoming famous, remember to be careful what you wish for. You might just get it.。

I grew up a people pleaser. Before I made any decision, I used to carefully weigh up how it would affect others and their thoughts of me. As a kid, it worked out pretty well. As an adult ... not so much. The constant need to have everyone like me wasn't answered, again and again. It started out through middle and high school when I was figuring out my interests. In my heart, I felt one way. In person, I obviously tended to do whatever I thought was “cool.” Before long it got to the point where every decision in my life involved me heavily weighing what other people would think. I had many different versions of me ready to please everyone and anyone. The journey to my own self-discovery came in something unexpected in the last few months — when a friend pulled away from me. Knowing that there was someone who did not like me really upset me.It wasn't until I was talking to another friend, and she pointed out that there were most likely a great number of people who didn't like me, that I realized something. I'd spent so much time trying to get everyone to like me that I never figured out what's actually best for me. Surprisingly, I figured out that it's a good thing to drive people away! That may sound strange, but let me explain:The world is full of people who, no matter what you do, will not like you. But it is also filled with people who will love you fiercely. You are not for everyone, and that's okay. As you drive people away, you only get closer to your people. Those who love you, who want to be close to you, who truly value you, are one step closer. You are not for everyone, and that's not just okay, that's amazing. Many Brits sign up to learn High Valyrian语篇导读电视剧《权利的游戏》中的人工语言风靡英伦,学习者的数量甚至超过了懂苏格兰盖尔语的人数。

That’s why one German radio host, who also happens to be a dog owner came up with the idea for a programme designed to relax dogs and make them feel like they aren’t alone. When 30-year-old Stephan Stock, a radio host at RadioTon, in Germany’s Baden-Wurttemberg region, announced the creation of a programme aimed at dogs, everyone thought it was just a clever April Fools trick. When I first read this sentence from an American friend’s e-mail, I laughed. I thought it was a perfect example of Chinglish.Obviously, it is a word-by-word literal(字面意思的)translation of the Chinese greeting with ruined English grammar and structure! Later on, my friend told me that it is a standard American greeting. I was too surprised to believe her. Her words could not convince me at all. So I did research on Google. com. To my surprise there are over 60 thousand web pages containing “Long time no see.” This sentence has been widely used in e-mails, letters, newspapers, movies, books, or other possible places. Though it is sort of informal, it is par he language that Americans use daily. Ironically, if type this phrase in Microsoft Word, the software will tell you that the grammar needs to be corrected.Nobody knows the origin of this Chinglish sentence. Some people believe that it came from Charlie Chans movies. In the 1930s, Hollywood moviemakers successfully created a worldwide famous Chinese detective named “Charlie Chan” on wide screens. Detective Chan liked to teach Americans some Chinese wisdom by quoting(引用)Confucius. “Long time no see.” was his trademark…Soon after Charlie Chan, “Long time no see.” became a popular phrase in America thanks to the popularity of these movies. Some scholars compare America to a huge melting pot. Since Americans appreciate Chinese culture more and more nowadays, I believe more Chinese words will become American English in the future. In this way, the Americans melting pot keeps adding richness and flavour.1. What did the writer himself feel surprised at?A. The Chinglish expression “Long time no see.”B. By changing word orders and adding auxiliary verbs (助动词), we are able to communicate variations in meaning. We can turn a statement into a question, state whether an action has taken place or is soon to take place, and perform other word tricks to convey delicate differences in meaning.Besides, grammar is universal and plays a part in every language, no matter how widespread it is.So the question which has confused many linguists is: who created grammar? At first, this question would appear impossible to answer. To find out how grammar is created, someone needs to be present at the time of a language’s creation, documenting its emergence. However, non-native speakers now greatly outnumber native speakers. A recent report suggested that the number of non-native speakers had already reached 2 billion, while there are around 350 million native speakers of English. The British Council predicts within five years about half the world's population over-3.5 billion-will speak English.(1) In a word, jobs. English has become the dominant language of international business, academic conferences, science and technology and, of course, tourism. Also, about 75% of the world's correspondence is written in English and 80% of all electronic information is stored in English. According to Dr Jurgen Beneke of the University of Hildesheim in Germany, by far the majority of interactions in English now take place between non-native speakers.(2) In South Korea, for example, the national government has been building English immersion schools all over the country, where teenagers live in an all-English environment for up to four weeks at a time. In these ‘English villages', students check in to their accommodation, go shopping, order food, go to the bank, take cooking classes or acting lessons-all in English. So what happens to a language when it becomes a world language? (3) _________ However, what is already obvious is that these new speakers of English aren't just using the language-they're changing it. Jean Paul Nerriere, a former French IBM executive, believes thatthe future of English belongs to a non-native speaker. For the international business community, he always recommends a version of the language which he calls “Globish”-a combination of ‘global’ and ‘English’.(4) That is, it's a simpler version of the language. So, for example, speakers of Globish don't use idioms and they definitely don't try to tell jokes. It has a limited vocabulary of about 1,500 words and the speakers use accurate but uncomplicated sentence structure. In fact, Nerriere suggests that native speakers will need to use Globish or they may well feel left out of the conversation!【分析】本文讲的是英语在当今世界的普及及其原因,以及未来的发展方向。
