口译教学案例

模块I.口译概述

Purpose of offering interpretation course:

1. General purpose:

On some occasions to some degree students can better serve as interpreters.

2. Requirement of Students:

a. conquering words & phrases in different fields

b. mastering some interpreting skills

c. improving listening ability, oral English & Chinese

d. enhancing transferring ability of different codes

e. strengthening memory of information & responding speed

Definition of Interpreting:

Interpreting is a service activity with a communication function. (Gile) It is usually a face-to-face communicative act.

●Rendering from one language into another keeping the meaning intact

● A task-based activity cutting across receptive and productive skills

Types of interpretation:

Classification on nature:

●Conference Interpretation 会议口译

●Personal/Escort Interpretation 随行口译

●Liaison Interpretation 联络口译

Classification on operation form:

●alternating interpretation (交替口译)

●consecutive interpretation (CI) (连续/逐步口译)

●simultaneous interpretation (SI)(同声传译)

●whispering interpretation (耳语翻译)

●sight/on-sight interpretation (视阅翻译/视译)

模块II.口译技巧

1. Interpreting similar word orders 顺句驱动

根据源语的句子顺序,把整个句子切分成多个信息单位或意群单位,再用连接词把这些单位连接起来,译出整体的意思。

顺句驱动的优点:减轻记忆的压力

e.g.

所有人//都可以借助互联网资源//来学习,不论他们是哪个民族、//何种性别、//何种肤色、//

只要他们可能接入互联网。”

译文:“All can study // by relying on internet resources// regardless of their race, nationality and sex // providing that // they could have access to the internet.”

2 Reformulation & Paraphrasing重组信息与源语释义

有时在口译中很难实现顺句驱动,但口译要求遵循“译信息”的原则,就是根据目标语的表达习惯重组信息,因此基于目标语表达习惯的“源语释义”不失为一条重要的口译练习技巧。

e.g.

Strange behavior on the part of whales in the southern Atlantic has been observed over a number of years now, // and a team of scientists has come up with a new theory to explain this behavior, // but considerable controversy has arisen in Argentina about the theory. Paraphrasing after reformulation:

Over a number of years, // whales in the southern Atlantic // have been observed // behaving strangely.// To explain this behavior, // a team of scientists has come up with a new theory //. But there has arisen considerable controversy about the theory // in Argentina //.

经过好多年的观察,人们发现南大西洋的鲸行为怪异;为了解释这一行为,一些科学家提出了一种新的理论;但该理论在阿根廷却引起了相当大的争议。

3. Idioms & Quotations 谚语与引语的口译

口译时经常碰到发言人颇有文才地引用古典诗词和经典佳句。此时如果译员不熟悉它们就会陷入困境。因此译员在培训时不仅要提高双语水平,还要学习一些常用的谚语和引语,特别要注意培养根据上下文语境进行准确而灵活、解释性的口译能力。

原则:literal interpreting + explanation

Idioms谚语

(1) 心照不宣

Give it an understanding but no tongue.

Make it understandable without words.

Have a tacit understanding.

(2) 画蛇添足

Paint/gild the lily.

Carry water to the river.

Add legs to the snake after finishing drawing it.

(3) 好高骛远

Aim at the moon.

Bite off more than one can chew.

(4) 捡了芝麻,丢了西瓜

Go to law for a sheep, you lose a cow.

Penny wise, pound foolish.

Do it in a bottom-up way.

(5) 塞翁失马,焉知非福

a blessing in disguise

Nothing so bad but might be a blessing.

Misfortune may be an actual blessing.

Danger is next neighbor to security.
