Recent months have seen a revival of the humble(普通的)bike across China, with an increasing number of people choosing pedaling(骑车)instead of driving to school, to workplaces or to do sightseeing. They’re popular among many Chinese people as they provide an effective solution to the “last mile” problem, which refe rs to the final leg of a person’s journey.However, the Chinese programs have also led to problems such as illegal parking, vandalism(故意破坏)and theft. In fact, these problems are also shared by bike-sharing programs abroad. Launched in 2007, Véilb is a larg e-scale public bike sharing system in Paris. At its early stage of operation, it also suffered from problems of vandalism or theft. By Oct 2009, a large number of Vélib’s initial bikes had to be replaced due to vandalism or theft, according to The New York Times.To deal with these problems, the company came up with the idea of encouraging people to return the bikes to stations by rewarding free time for their next rides. Now, Chinese service operators are also trying to address these problems. For example, Mobike sets a 100-point credit score for each user, with points taken in the case of bad behavior. Doctors in hospital emergency rooms often see accidental poisonings. A frightened parent arrives with a child who swallowed a cleaning liquid. Or perhaps the harmful substance is a medicine. Or it might be a chemical product meant to kill insects. These are common causes of accidental poisoning.In cases like this, seek medical help as soon as possible. Save the container of whatever caused the poisoning. And look on the container for information about anything that stops the effects of the poison. Save anything expelled from the mouth of the victim. That way, doctors can examine it.Millions of people know a way to save a person who is choking on something trapped in the throat. The method is commonly known as the Heimlich Maneuver or abdominal thrusts(腹部按压), which you can do by getting directly behind a sitting or standing person. Put your arms around the victim’s waist. Close one hand to form a ball. Place it over the upper part of the stomach, below the ribs. Place the other hand on top. Then push forcefully inward and upward. Repeat the abdominal thrusts until the object is expelled from the mouth. For someone who is pregnant or very fat, place your hands a little higher than with normal abdominal thrusts.Red Cross experts say taking these steps can save many lives. But they also warn that abdominal thrusts are not for people who have almost drowned. They say use of the method could delay other ways to re-start breathing in the victim. Abdominal thrusts should be used only in cases where a near-drowning victim is choking on an object.To learn more about first aid, ask a hospital or organization like a Red Cross or Red Crescent Society for information. The occasion is typically celebrated during the summer months with boat races and competitions, especially in the southern provinces of China which abound in rivers and lakes. In the West and other countries of east ern Asia, “Duan Wu” is also known as the“Double Fifth Day”.While many stories regarding the origin of the“Double Fifth Day”abound, the myth of Qu Yuan is popularly held to be the actual reason behind the origin of the festival. Qu Yuan was a poet and political figure of the State of Chu(situated in present-day Hunan and Hubei Provinces). He was a minister during the Warring States Period(475—221 BC) of Chinese history. The story about Qu Yuan has been deeply rooted in Chinese culture and is believed by many to be the prime factor for the origin of the festival. However, scholars and historians have pointed out that a number of popular traditions associated with the festival already existed even before Qu Yuan and they have gone on to suggest many other origins of the festival. Studies have discovered that the nature of celebrations related to the festival is characteristic of the celebration of the harvest of winter wheat and other such crop festivals of ancient Chinese agricultural society.
