Exercise 1
To help students realize the importance of protecting the environment, the Student’s Union of our school held an activity on June 5th. All the students in Grade 1 took an active part in it. The playground was cleared to look tidy and the trees and flowers were watered so that they could grow better. Also, students were encouraged to collect old newspapers and books, as well as used cans, which were then sorted and recycled. Additionally, some experts on environmental protection were invited to give us lectures, which greatly raised students’ awareness of environmental protection.

Dear Lisa,
How have you been? You must be enjoying your life back home. We still miss the days we spent together.
Last term, we all benefited a lot from your lessons. Our oral English was greatly improved and your encouragement made us become more confident to express ourselves. In addition, we had a better understanding of western culture and tradition.
On behalf of my class, I would like to thank you for teaching us English! We wish you joy and happiness in the new stage of life!

Besides, we’d appreciate various activities to get everyone involved in speaking English. Exercise 7
Mrs. Wilson,
I’m going out shopping, and won’t be back until about 5:00 p.m. I have taken with me the two books you asked me to return.
At about one o’clock, Tracy called, saying that she couldn’t meet you at Bolton Coffee tomorrow morning as she has something important to attend to. She felt very sorry about that, but said that you could set some other time for the meeting. She wanted you to call back as soon as possible and she has already told Susan about this change.
Yours,
Li Hua
My dear friends,
Reading is very important in our daily life. We can gain much knowledge by reading many good books, which can enlarge our views. Besides, if we read more important books, our study can be improved and we can grow up in a healthier and happier way.
However, many activities take up too much of our reading time, such as listening to music, watching TV and going online. What a pity! So I would like to suggest that everyone (should) read more good books. It will be beneficial to us.
Let’s start reading now!
Yours,
Li Hua Exercise 9
Respecting Parents Program
A program called “Respecting Parents” has been started in our school recently, urging students to follow a list of ten “Dos”, including remembering parents’ birthdays, and greeting parents on their returning home. Showing respect for parents is one of the Chinese traditional moral values. However, as most students today are the “only child” in their family, they often regard themselves as the “center”, ignoring their parents. So far, the program has won praises from parents. Meanwhile, students also think highly of it as it has led to a better parent-kid relationship in their family.

Greener Life, Clearer Air
It is not easy to forget the heavy smog in January. It lasted for days and affected many areas in China, causing much inconvenience to our life and even harm to our health.
It warned us to take action to fight for clean air before being too late. And I believe a green lifestyle can make a big difference to the air quality. Firstly, it’s good to take public transportation rather than cars whenever possible.Besides, be aware to save water, electricity and paper. Moreover, recycle whatever we can and influence those around us to follow!
Exercise 12
Dear David,
I’d like to ask you to write an article for our school’s English newspaper.
The “Foreign Cultures” column in our English newspaper, which posts articles written by foreigners about the cultures of their home countries, is very popular among us students. Would you please write something about the culture of the United States? And we would especially welcome articles about American ways of spending holidays and festivals. You can write anything relevant so long as it’s interesting and informative. 400 words would be fine. Could we have your article (语气委婉)before June 28th?
I’m looking forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely Yours,
Li Hua

However, boys are most interested in becoming businessmen. Only a few boys want to be teachers. Interestingly, the number of boys and girls who want to become doctors is equal. As for policeman, more boys expect to have this job. However, about 10% of the students are not clear about their future.
Exercise 14
Dear Sir/Madam,
I’m Li Hua, a senior 3 student. I have read your advertisement on the Internet saying that you want a part-time English editor. I’m wondering if I can apply for the position.
I think I’m quite qualified to do the job. First, I have a good knowledge of English and I can communicate with native English speakers fluently. Second, having worked for the school newspaper for nearly two years, I’m skilled at writing articles. Finally, I am fond of working in a team.
I would appreciate it very much if you could offer me the job.
Yours sincerely,

Dear Tom,
I’m sorry to know that you are suffering from the disturbing pressure from study. Here is some advice on how to study effectively.
First, since pressure is part of our students’ life, why not choose to hold an optimistic attitude towards it and even transform it into motivation? Besides, listening to songs is also an effective means to relieve pressure. Thus, we can relax ourselves rather than suffer from it. Last but not least, we should exchange ideas with our classmates. Through the communication we can find support, which will encourage us to overcome difficulties in our study.
Hope these can benefit you.
Yours,

Dear sir or Madam,
My name is Li Hua, a tourist in your city from China. I’m writing to express my gratitude to one of your staff, Tim, for his kindest help.
I clearly remember that I was hit by a car just after I got off a bus. The sharp pain was really killing me. It was Tim who rushed me to the hospital without hesitation at that moment. My injuries were unlikely to recover so quickly without his timely assistance.
Please convey my sincere thanks to him, who makes me believe in the beauty of human beings again.
Best wishes!
Yours sincerely,

An Impressive Reception of an English Guest
Last week, I received an English student named Peter from our twinning school. To make him familiar with Chinese culture, I arranged a series of activities. For example, I took him to write calligraphy and play Taiji, which was amazing him. Plus, we went to watch Shangxing Opera, the colorful costumes and unique performing of which impressed him deeply. Also, he tried making dumplings. Despite the imperfect shape, he was satisfied and enjoyed them a lot.(细节描写)
What an impressive experience! From it, I felt it my honor and duty to introduce
Chinese culture to the world.。
