" and he should respond:"my course 230 degrees."Lesson Three Anchor OrdersAnchoring is widely used in navigation. When a ship arrives at a port , it normally drops anchor at the anchorage .When a ship waits for voyage order ,the ship must anchor at some places .Before a strong wind blows ,a ship must shift to the sheltered anchoring for avoiding contact or collision damage among ships or to the berth facilities .In some areas ,anchoring is forbidden, such as places with submerged cables or diving operations ,places with fishing nets, ect. Anchoring is very important for safe operations of ships .Before anchoring ,the ship master must check the depth of the water, the characteristics of sea bottom ,and wind and current situations . Good seamanship is essential.Lesson Four Engine OrdersAny engine order given should be repeated by the person operating the bridge telegraph(s) and the officer on watch should ensure the order is carried out correctly and immediately.Chapter Three Keeping Watch at the GangwayWhen a ship in port,sailors must keep watch on the gangway.The duty sailor must greet visitors, inquire about their intentions and show them the way if necessary.Chapter Four Opening and Closing HatchesLesson one Keeping Watch on the Cargo OperationsWhen the ship is alongside the wharf,I must open the hatch covers before dischargingcargo.When opening the hatch covers,I should make sure the safety of operation.When the cargo loading is finished,I must close the hatch covers.Lesson Two Opening and Closing HatchesAs an important part of a ship,hatch cover plays a great role.It may support platform.It may protect sea water from cargo.When ship is alongside the wharf,you must open the hatch cover before loading or discharging.When loading or discharging is finished,you must close thehatch cover.Chapter Six Loading and Unloading OperationsPassage 1Ensure the cargo hold area is clean before stowing cargo .If the hatch is not cleared ,pieces of wood from broken crates,may get under the pallets when they are put into the storage position A lopsided pallet may cause the whole shipment or cargo to shift when the ship is at sea .cargo handlers should stow cargo so that the strongest structures of an item will bear the greatest pressure and weight of that itemPassage 2The weather deck is used to stow cargo that is too large to go through the hatches,or when there is no room below deck for stowage .whatever the reason ,deck cargo is loaded last and discharged first .this prevents cargo from being lifted high to pass it over the deck cargo ,and to give the handling personnel a clear view of the operations area.Chapter Nine Shipboard Maintenance and RepairPassage 1The most common kinds of paint found on board ship are as follow:metal primers ,which are applied to a bare surface to give protection against rust and to act as a key to the next coat ;undercoats,which are used over the primer before the top coat ;top coats which provide a hard-wearing surface and give the required color ;heat-resist paints for radiator and pipes and for the ship's funnel;non-slip paints for use on weather decks other suitable surfaces such as companion-ways;and varnishes to give a clear protective coat to woodwork.Passage 2Before an area can be repainted,proper preparation is necessary.The area must be cleaned and washed with a cleaning solution to remove all salt,dirt and oil.loose paint and scale are removed with a scraper and any heavy rust with a chipping hammer.Finally,a wire brush should be used on all bare metal to remove the last of the scale,before the first coat of paint is applied.remember that gloomy,damp and rainy days are not suitable for painting.Passage 3Cleaning is a constant job on board a ship.Everything on board should be kept clean and tidy.
