Here is a 1000-word essay about Ernest Hemingway in English:Ernest Hemingway: A Literary Giant and Enigmatic IconErnest Hemingway's life and literary works are the embodiment of the modernist era in American literature. As one of the most influential and celebrated authors of the 20th century, Hemingway's impact on the literary world is undeniable. Through his sparse yet powerful prose, he captured the raw human experiences of love, loss, war, and the human condition.Born in 1899 in Oak Park, Illinois, Hemingway grew up in a middle-class household with a doctor father and a musically-inclined mother. From a young age, Hemingway displayed a passion for adventure and the outdoors, traits that would heavily influence his writing later in life. After graduating high school, Hemingway briefly worked as a reporter for the Kansas City Star, where he honed his minimalist writing style that would become a trademark of his fiction. In 1918, Hemingway enlisted in the Red Cross as an ambulance driver during World War I. This experience of witnessing thebrutalities of war firsthand had a profound impact on him, and themes of disillusionment, existentialism, and the search for meaning would become central to his writing. Hemingway was seriously wounded during the war, an event that further fueled his fascination with death and mortality. After the war, Hemingway moved to Paris, where he associated with a group of expatriate writers and artists known as the "Lost Generation." This circle included luminaries such as F. Scott Fitzgerald, Gertrude Stein, and Pablo Picasso, with whom Hemingway engaged in lively intellectual discourse and creative exchange. It was during this time in Paris that Hemingway published his first major work, the 1926 novel The Sun Also Rises, which brought him widespread critical acclaim and established him as a prominent voice in the modernist literary movement. The Sun Also Rises, with its sparse, economical prose and exploration of the disillusionment of the post-war generation, set the tone for much of Hemingway's subsequent work. Novels such as A Farewell to Arms (1929) and For Whom the Bell Tolls (1940) further cemented his reputation as a master of minimalist, understated storytelling, where the true emotional depth lies beneath the surface of the text.In addition to his novels, Hemingway also made significant contributions to the genre of short fiction. His collection of shortstories, In Our Time (1925), is a landmark work that showcases his ability to capture the essence of human experience in just a few carefully crafted pages. Stories like "The Killers" and "Hills Like White Elephants" demonstrate Hemingway's masterful use of subtext, dialogue, and symbolism to convey complex themes without resorting to overt exposition.Hemingway's writing style, often referred to as the "Hemingway code," was characterized by its sparse, declarative sentences, absence of unnecessary adjectives, and reliance on subtext and implication to convey meaning. This approach, which he developed in part due to his early journalistic training, was a deliberate reaction against the ornate, verbose prose that dominated much of 19th-century literature. Hemingway believed that by stripping away extraneous details, he could better capture the raw, unvarnished essence of human experience. In addition to his literary achievements, Hemingway's larger-than-life persona and adventurous lifestyle also contributed to his iconic status. He was known for his love of bullfighting, big-game hunting, deep-sea fishing, and other high-risk pursuits, all of which found their way into his writing. Hemingway's public image as a rugged, macho figure - a "man's man" - only added to his appeal and influence. However, Hemingway's personal life was also marked by turmoil and tragedy. He struggled with depression, alcoholism, and failed relationships, and his final years were plagued by physical and mental health issues. Tragically, Hemingway took his own life in 1961, bringing an end to one of the most significant literary careers of the 20th century.Despite the complexities and contradictions of his life, Hemingway's impact on American and world literature is undeniable. His distinctive writing style, thematic preoccupations, and larger-than-life persona have all left an indelible mark on the literary landscape. Contemporary writers and readers alike continue to grapple with the legacy of this enigmatic and influential figure, whose work has become synonymous with the modernist movement and the American literary canon.。

Ernest Hemingway
Ernest Hemingway1899-1961, American novelist and short-story writer, one of the great American writers of the 20th cent. The son of a country doctor, Hemingway worked as a reporter for the Kansas City Star after graduating from high school in 1917.During World War I he served as an ambulance driver in France and in the Italian infantry and was wounded just before his 19th birthday. Later, while working in Paris as a correspondent for the Toronto Star, he became involved with the expatriate literary and artistic circle surrounding Gertrude Stein.During the Spanish Civil War, Hemingway served as a correspondent on the loyalist side. He fought in World War II and then settled in Cuba in 1945. In 1954, Hemingway was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. After his expulsion from Cuba by the Castro regime, he moved to Idaho. He was increasingly plagued by ill health and mental problems, and in July, 1961, he committed suicide by shooting himself.Ernest Miller Hemingway (July 21, 1899 – July 2, 1961) was an American writer and journalist. He was part of the 1920s expatriate community in Paris, and one of the veterans of World War I later known as "the Lost Generation." He received the Pulitzer Prize in 1953 for The Old Man and the Sea, and the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1954.Hemingway's distinctive writing style is characterized by economy and understatement, and had a significant influence on the development of twentieth-century fiction writing. His protagonists are typically stoical men who exhibit an ideal described as "grace under pressure." Many of his works are now considered classics of American literature.Hemingway's fiction usually focuses on people living essential, dangerous lives, soldiers, fishermen, athletes, bullfighters, who meet the pain and difficulty of their existence with stoic courage. His celebrated literary style, influenced by Ezra Pound and Gertrude Stein , is direct, terse, and often monotonous, yet particularly suited to his elemental subject matter.Hemingway's first books, Three Stories and Ten Poems (1923), In Our Time (short stories, 1924), and The Torrents of Spring (a novel, 1926), attracted attention primarily because of his literary style. With the publication of The Sun Also Rises (1926), he was recognized as the spokesman of the “lost generation” (so called by Gertrude Stein). The novel concerns a group of psychologically bruised, disillusioned expatriates living in postwar Paris, who take psychic refuge in such immediate physical activities as eating, drinking, traveling, brawling, and lovemaking. His next important novel, A Farewell to Arms (1929), tells of a tragic wartime love affair between an ambulance driver and an English nurse. Hemingway also published such volumes of short stories as Men without Women (1927) and Winner Take Nothing (1933), as well as The Fifth Column, a play. His First Forty-nine Stories (1938) includes such famous short stories as “The Killers,” “The Undefeated,” and “The Snows of Kilimanjaro.” Hemingway's nonfiction works, Death in the Afternoon (1932), about bullfighting, and Green Hills of Africa (1935), about big-game hunting, glorify virility, bravery, and the virtue of a primal challenge to life. From his experience in the Spanish Civil War came Hemingway's great novel, For Whom the Bell Tolls (1940), which, in detailing an incident in the war, argues for human brotherhood. His novella The Old Man and the Sea (1952) celebrates the indomitable courage of an aged Cuban fisherman. Among Hemingway's other works are the novels To Have and Have Not (1937) and Across the River and into the Trees (1950); he also edited an anthology of stories, Men at War (1942). Posthumous publications include A Moveable Feast (1964), a memoir of Paris in the 1920s; the novels Islands in the Stream (1970) and True at First Light (1999), a safari saga begun in 1954 and edited by his son Patrick; and The Nick Adams Stories (1972), a collection that includes previously unpublished piecesErnest Hemingway (1899-1961), born in Oak Park, Illinois, started his career as a writer in a newspaper office in Kansas City at the age of seventeen. After the United States entered the First World War, he joined a volunteer ambulance unit in the Italian army. Serving at the front, he was wounded, was decorated by the Italian Government, and spent considerable time in hospitals. After his return to the United States, hebecame a reporter for Canadian and American newspapers and was soon sent back to Europe to cover such events as the Greek Revolution.During the twenties, Hemingway became a member of the group of expatriate Americans in Paris, which he described in his first important work, The Sun Also Rises (1926). Equally successful was A Farewell to Arms (1929), the study of an American ambulance officer's disillusionment in the war and his role as a deserter. Hemingway used his experiences as a reporter during the civil war in Spain as the background for his most ambitious novel, For Whom the Bell Tolls (1940). Among his later works, the most outstanding is the short novel, The Old Man and the Sea (1952), the story of an old fisherman's journey, his long and lonely struggle with a fish and the sea, and his victory in defeat.Hemingway - himself a great sportsman - liked to portray soldiers, hunters, bullfighters - tough, at times primitive people whose courage and honesty are set against the brutal ways of modern society, and who in this confrontation lose hope and faith. His straightforward prose, his spare dialogue, and his predilection for understatement are particularly effective in his short stories, some of which are collected in Men Without Women (1927) and The Fifth Column and the First Forty-Nine Stories (1938). Hemingway died in Idaho in 1961.。

There were only two Americans stopping at the hotel. They did not know any of the people they passed on the stairs on their way to and from their room. Their room was on the second floor facing the sea. It also faced the public garden and the war monument. There were big palms and green benches in the public garden. In the good weather there was always an artist with his easel. Artists liked the way the palms grew and the bright colors of the hotels facing the gardens and the sea. Italians came from a long way off to look up at the war monument. It was made of bronze and glistened in the rain. It was raining. The rain dripped from the palm trees. Water stood in pools on the gravel paths. The sea broke in a long line in the rain and slipped back down the beach to come up and break again in a long line in the rain. The motor cars were gone from the square by the war monument. Across the square in the doorway of the cafe a waiter stood looking out at the empty square.

Part I. The Appreciation of《An Alpine Idyll》This article is listed as one of the horror fictions by Ma Yuan, and is regarded as the most horrible one in Hemingway’s works. It described a story about a peasant who buried his wife from the perspective of a spectator “I”.At the beginning, two skiers came down into the valley,” It was spring in the valley but the sun was very hot”, and when they passed the churchyard they saw a burial. As we all know, spring should be a season that full of vitality. But they saw the death in such a hot day. So it said that “In the bright May morning the grave-filling looked unreal”. The scene seems have nothing to do with the title “An Alpine Idyll”, and bring a depressive, terrorist color of it. Taking about the word “Idyll”, we may think of stunning landscapes, a great number of animals and plants and good people, but this article didn’t mention these things. The narrator of this article “I” and John entered the inn in the town, and the roles in the article: innkeeper, cook, girl, sexton and peasant were come on stage in turn. In this part, Hemingway use a lot words depicted a stifling picture. The description is really good but the tempo is too slow. Then, by the mouth of the sexton it told a story about a peasant who disposed his dead wife’s body in an unreasonable way. It seems that the peasant is really a “beast”, very outrageous, but is it true? After carefully reading we can find that, there is no word coming from the peasant, the hero of the story. The story was propagated by the sexton.Watching the performance of the peasant: ①After his wife dead, because of the cold weather, her body would not decay, the peasant move his wife’s body to the shed and put her up against the wall when he cut up the big wood. That maybe because the peasant want to spend more time with his wife just like she was alive, and he could get along with her for a winter. ②When spring came, the peasant had to bring his wife to be buried. He “spread ing the earth evenly as a man spreading manure in a garden”, with the description we can see that how meticulous and soft of the peasant when he filled his wife’s grave. And although the sun is hot, the peasant still wearing high leather boots and old army clothes. He dressed very formal and we can see his solemn attitude to his wife’s funeral. ③Meanwhile, “There were patches on the elbows”, the patches must be made by peasant’s wife, he wore his old army clothes may also show his missing to his wife.Such an affectionate man who deeply loved his wife, how can he be the “beast” in the mouth of the innkeeper? The sexton was gossip and hypocritical, he and innkeeper were sinister partners, they slandered the peasant together. When the sexton talked about the story, his description was misleading, he wanted to defame the peasant and make people misunderstand him. In the sentence “Her mouth was open and when I came into the shed at night to cut up the big wood, I hung the lantern from it.” The last word “it” means “shed”, not “her mouth”. However, the peasant was not very good with words, and the sexton misinterpreted his meaning in order to lead listeners to believe that the peasant was a “beast” as the innkeeper said. The innkeeper just said “Those peasants are beasts.”But he even did not know the correct date of the peasant’s wife’s death. He just talked a lot of nonsense and defamatory words. At the end of this article, the innkeeper asked “me” did “I” understand it all, all about his wife, “I” said “I heard it”, but immediately expressed my doubts, that means “I” was not really believe what the sexton said. The sexton and the innkeeper both said “He didn't want to drink with me”, that means they don’t had friendship with the peasant. Then John, the one who was more sophisticated than “I”, didn’t want to know more about the story and insisted to urged me to eat impatiently. Thus it can be seen that the truth of the story is questionable. Hemingway just told reader a story, leaving people thinking.Part II. Comment on any five of the following in English.1.Uncle George in 《印第安人营地》.On the one hand, Uncle George had an affair with the Indian puerperal. Firstly, he was neither a man-midwife nor a relative of the Indian woman, but he came with the doctor to deliver a baby of the puerperal. When they went into the shanty, Uncle George was the front one. We know that one person’s natural behavior is reasonable. It shows the urgent attitude of Uncle George that he wanted to see his lover. Secondly, “She screamed just as Nick and the two Indians followed his father and Uncle George into the shanty.” This Indian woman jus t screamed to convey her emotion to Uncle George with an implicit way that only they can understand. When doctor did the operation, the Indian woman bit Uncle George only, maybe she wanted to show herlover how painful she was, and Uncle George said “Damn squaw bitch!”The word “squaw” has the meaning of “wife”, Uncle George’s words revealed the intimacies. Thirdly, the doctor and “the young Indian who had rowed Uncle George over” may also know the thing between Uncle George and the Indian woman. Before the operation, the doctor asked Uncle George to “Pull back that quilt”, it was a special thing that only close people could do. After the operation, the doctor also said “Ought to have a look at the proud father. They’re usually the worst sufferers in these li ttle affairs”, it was an irony and the doctor thought Uncle George should show his kindness to the Indian woman’s husband. The young Indian always rowed Uncle George over, he may knew he was the woman’s lover, so he laughed at him when he was bit by the wo man.On the other hand, Uncle George may be the killer who killed the Indian woman’s husband. He was at the scene all the time and he had the time and motivation to kill the husband. We can draw the conclusion of it from Hemingway’s description of the husband’s death.2.Nick’s father in 《印第安人营地》.Firstly, he was a good doctor without racial discrimination. Although he was called while his free time of fishing, he still abide by the doctor integrity and came to help the Indian woman immediately. Before the op eration, “his father washed his hands very carefully and thoroughly”, he asked to boil the water and “Into the water left in the kettle he put several things he unwrapped from a handkerchief”. He made careful preparation and did a successful operation. And also, he said “The nurse should be here from St. Ignace by noon and she’ll bring everything we need.”, which can made sure that the Indian woman should be fine after the rough operation.Secondly, he was a good father. He wanted to cultivate Nick as an intern, so he explained to Nick about the situation of the Indian woman and showed every step of the operation to his son. However, he did not force Nick, “You can watch this or not, Nick, just as you like”. When he saw the death of the husband, he firstly a sked Uncle George to “Take Nick out of the shanty”, and he regretted to bring Nick along and let Nick viewed the cruel death. He explained to Nick about the Indian woman and her husband with while lies, in order to protect him.Thirdly, he knew Uncle George and the Indian woman had an affair, he thought George was wrong and pitied the husband.3.Roger in 《男同性恋者的母亲》.Roger was a cheater and he was parasitic on matador Paco. He thought Paco had earned a lot of money and wanted to get money from him. Roger insisted on taking money to deal with Paco’s mother’s grave in order to cheat Paco’s money tactfully. But he did not succeed. Then he quibbled that Paco owed his money. Actually, the money was the necessary expenditure Roger must paid by himself when he lived in Paco’s house. Roger wasn’t Paco’s manager and he should bear the cost of himself. When he failed again, he left Paco and talked against him in public. When talked about Paco’s mother, Roger said “his mother’s body” instead of “remains”, leading people to misunderstand Poca. Roger said Poca was “just tight”, but Paco helped “a paisano who needs money to go home” even though he did not have so much money. Roger “say all sorts of unjust things” about Paco, and slandered that Paco was a queen. At last, Roger not only abused Paco, but insulted all the matadors, which totally exposed his ugly face as a scoundrel and riffraff.4.Liz Coates in《在密西根北部》.At the beginning, Liz liked Jim very much. But Jim “didn’t seem to notice her very”. Liz was thinking about Jim all the time, her heart was full of Jim, so “When she saw the wagon coming down the road she felt weak and sick sort of inside”. The “sick” and “weak” mean that she really loved Jim very much and she wanted to be intimate with him.And then, although Jim drank a lot of wine and behaved unusually to Liz, she still followed Jim “for a walk”. When Jim try to seduce Liz, she just said “don’t” and “mustn’t” without fierce resistance. “She was frightened but she wanted it”, so things still happened, Liz was raped by Jim.At last, after Liz was raped, she found that “Jim was asleep”, left her uncomfortable and camped. She pushed him, lifted his head and shook it, but Jim still asleep. “She was cold and miserable and everything felt gone”, she knew things were wrong. She couldn’t wake Jim up, she just cried but still took care of Jim, the man she really loved, and then she left. Liz Coates showed her grace under pressure and she would be the new one to start her new life toughly.5.The types of women characters in Ernest Hemingway’s short stories. There are two types of women characters in Ernest Hemingway’s short stories. The one type is traditional female image. They oppressed under male dominance and suffer it. For example, the wife in the article Cat in the Rain. The couple travelled abroad and they were stuck in an Italian hotel, the wife saw a cat sheltered from the rain under the table, she wanted to catch it and have it but she couldn’t find t he cat. Then she thought about several abhorrent things in her life and complained. However, her husband was indifferent and arbitrary, she couldn’t make these changes by herself, and could only relied on and listened to her husband. She received the cat they gave to her instead of looking for the first cat she wanted.Another type is new female image. They had sense of independence in the world that under male dominance, and they were courageous to against men. For instance, Liz Coates in Up in Michigan, when she found she loved the wrong man, she went back alone and sturdily to start a new life. Margaret in The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber was also a new female. She was beautiful and she married with the old Mr. Macomber, she always betrayed her husband and looked down upon him. Her female consciousness was extreme and even killed her husband.。

It was during this time that he began to develop his distinctive literary style, characterized by its sparse, understated language and its focus on the human experience in all its complexity.
Title: The Quintessence of Hemingway: A Glimpse into the Life and Legacy of a Literary GiantIn the realm of literature, few names resonate with the vigor and profound impact as that of Ernest Hemingway. Born on July 21, 1899, in Oak Park, Illinois, Hemingway was not just a writer but a figure whose life and works embody the essence of his famous dictum: "Courage is grace under pressure." His literary contributions, spanning across novels, short stories, and journalistic works, have engraved his name in the annals of modern literature.Hemingway's writing style, often referred to as the Iceberg Theory or the theory of omission, revolutionized modern fiction. His concise, sparse prose devoid of superfluous language cut straight to the marrow of the matter, presenting readers with a stark clarity that enabled them to grapple with the complexities of human experience in its rawest form. This minimalist approach allowed for depth of meaning to emerge from the subtext, challenging readers to delve beneath the surface. His first major novel, "The Sun Also Rises," published in 1926, introduced the world to the "Lost Generation," a termHemingway coined to describe the disillusionment and alienation felt by many who survived World War I. The protagonist, Jake Barnes, embodies this existential crisis, moving through life with a profound sense of loss and longing. Through Barnes, Hemingway explores themes of unrequited love, identity, and the search for purpose in a post-war world."A Farewell to Arms," published two years later, further solidified Hemingway's literary standing. The novel,semi-autobiographical in nature, delves into the devastation of war and the redemptive power of love through the lens of Frederic Henry, an American ambulance driver on the Italian front during World War I. His relationship with the English nurse Catherine Barkley is a poignant testament to the human capacity for love and resilience amidst the chaos of war.Hemingway's writings are also celebrated for their vivid portrayal of the natural world. His passion for hunting, fishing, and safari expeditions found its way into his works, most notably in "The Old Man and the Sea." This novella, for which Hemingway received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1954, is a timeless tale of Santiago, an aging fisherman's battle with a giant marlin. It is a profound meditation on courage, perseverance, and the struggle against inevitable defeat.Beyond his writing, Hemingway's life itself was a narrative of adventure and resilience. His experiences across continents, from the trenches of World War I to the jungles of Africa, provided the backdrop for his literary works. Yet, it was his mental health struggles and eventual suicide that cast a shadow over his later years, reminding us of the fragility that often lies behind the veil of outward strength.Ernest Hemingway's legacy is a multifaceted one, woven with threads of triumph and turmoil, resilience and despair. His works, characterized by their economy of language and depth of emotion, continue to resonate with readers worldwide. Hemingway's journey through life and literature serves as a testament to the enduring power of storytelling and the human spirit's boundless capacity for both creation and destruction. As we reflect on his life and works, it becomes evident that Hemingway, in his pursuit of truth and beauty, captured not only the essence of his own experiences but also the universal human condition, making him an enduring figure in the landscape of literature.。

On Hemingway Female1.IntroductionThrough a series of critical views of the female image of Hemingway's, This paper analyzes Hemingway's several typical female image, proving that Hemingway has a really deep explanation in the women in his creation process. And we can also know the female aspect in the social context of that time, It reflects Hemingway's writing is based on their own creative consciousness and understanding of human nature to shape one and another bright female image. His creative talents and his outlook of women is showed at the same time.2.Hemingway's female image became the focus of criticsHemingway is also called "male chauvinist pigs" and "feminist supporters," In fact, this is largely a wishful thinking of the critics. In "The Art of Short Stories," Hemingway wrote ," Female characters are the most difficult to deal with. But when someone present the criticism that there is no such woman you wrote, you do not worry about it. It just shows that your female characters are unlike their female characters." It is because of his strong feminist consciousness and the focus of female characters, the creation is so difficult. Looking at the Hemingway 's major works, from the early short stories, until the "The Old Man and the Sea", it is not di fficult to find writers‟ women consciousness. This awareness has its consistency ,not changing because of the different time, location and person. And the consistency rightly shows contradiction of writer‟s dealing with the female characters. Whether it is "a pig" or "Daddy Hemingway" or partial in the view, his female characters for Hemingway is shaped only according to their own creative consciousness and purpose and his grasp of human nature, and there are no extreme side. The image of women in Hemingway…s works reflects his concepts of the role and understanding of women, all of these are closely linked with his thoughts, the life history and the culture of that era.2.1Criticism of Hemingway’ s works’smearing and being hostile tofemale imagesIt is well known that Hemingway in the United States has an important position in the literary history, his contribution to American literature is an indisputable fact, However, the image of Hemingway's female critics has been aroused heated arguments, and sometimes Hemingway's attitudes to women are the focus in the critic world.A considerable number of critics thinks that Hemingway was a male chauvinist, in response to it, his work is more of a "tough guy" image, and a kind of discrimination against women in his eyes. After the rise of feminism, Hemingway's female characters suffered more praise or blame. Some activists have not been satisfied with the so-called macho and dismissed it as "misogyny complex" or even worse, a "male chauvinist pigs".Some critics and biographers tend to excavate materials from the private life of Ernest Hemingway, interpreting their work, analyzing the figures. This seems quite natural to come to the conclusion of Hemingway‟s being hatred of women. He has repeatedly accused his mother as "she is a bitch," "That bitch!" For a woman giving his life and a love, this is indeed an insult to be added. He has not a happy marriage relationship. Hemingway had attacked Fitzgerald‟s wife Zelda that he was jealous Fitzgerald‟s talents to interfere his writing process. This is also listed as an example of his hostility toward women. Won him the Nobel Prize in Literature, "The Old Man and the Sea" is obviously a work concerning about the world of men - the book actually has no female role. His male characters owned "grace under pressure" and is a"tough guy", while female characters often seem to be as a foil or the opposite existence. Therefore, Edmund Wilson ,as the representative of part of the critics, pointed out the people in Hemingway‟s works as "male chauvinist pigs."2.2 Hemingway’s women image tend to feministRobert. Keluser and other critics took Albright. Anshly, Maria and other female characters as the basis that: Hemingway is a feminist writer. His work has a strong feminist tendencies. Many female characters should not have been cast aside, but should be sympathetic to, even admirable. This view has been affirmation for the first time to the repeatedly ignored or disparaged female characters of Hemingway's and certainly refreshes, and it has its unique feature. In his novels, there is not lack of feminist consciousness of Hemingway, and several of them were launched from the female consciousness. Hemingway also shows his own feelings in shaping their women characters on different occasions at different times. "I always thought that living in the same rigid criteria men is much easier than women. Neither a man will be like a woman to follow so rigid and strict guidelines, nor to imagine a man himself like a woman having the same good criteria, unless a real effort to do. "If there is no women consciousness , how to understand women?3. Analysis of the female image in Hemingway’s works3.1 Causes of the Female ImageAs an outstanding representative of "Lost Generation", Hemingway's distinguished position in literary world in the United States and his contribution to the development of American literature has been recorded in history. Hemingway‟s image of women is the fragment and the silhouette of the course of whole Western civilization, which takes male power as the axis. It is also an exact reproduction of literary works. Hemingway‟s contradictory views on women are formed under the influence of cultural background and life experiences in that era, and his views on women has played a huge impact on his life and art.Hemingway lived in the end of 19th century and mid-20th century, this particular turn of the old and new era of cultural ethos and historical events played a very important role in Hemingway's values, world views and concepts of the formation of women. As thousands of years of patriarchal culture, heritage, people's consciousness is invisibly influenced by the patriarchal culture, Hemingway is a writer with a strong sense of male subject, The independence of women he advocated is permitted within the scope of men, and doesn‟t damage the main location. He truly works on women's living conditions, emotional needs, values, and expression. He shows his understanding and support to what the women required including female equality, freedom, liberation, requiring the same right to education, employment, voting rights and this requirements reflect the need of human civilization. Although the patriarchal culture has been on the wane, but several thousand years of cultural domination and influence, everyone of patriarchal culture has "collective unconscious". Hemingway could not completely give up men stand. Though he supported women's liberation movement and enjoy the independent, brave woman, he was afraid of the result women liberation movement developed into, such as the formation of female supremacy, female domination male. so he thinks the right women requested should not threaten the dignity and the authority of men,. It is in this time under the influence of cultural background, Hemingway‟s views of women have become so complex and contradictory.Hemingway was living in a time there is a decline of Western patriarchal culture, but a rise of female consciousness, feminist movement of the twentieth century. As a result of two world wars, the traditional values have been destructed. People confronted a world which Nietzsche predicted an era of "value" evaluation. The so-called"Greenwich Village thought" swept in the United States in 1920s .This thought influenced the lives of men and women profoundly. Many poor writers and artists lived in Greenwich Village, living a unique life, forming a "Greenwich Village thought", to resist the traditional "business - Protestant Christian morality." Hemingway's life circumstances are being wrapped in women: his mother, his four wives, and his lovers. Those women are more or less influenced by" Greenwich Village thought," they have their own personality and temperament. The rising feminist movement, the practice of female life have an impact on the writer, Ernest Hemingway's thoughts, so he clearly recognize in that new era the trend women in the pursuit of self irreversibly. This is why Hemingway can recognize those women who have self-awareness and rebellious spirit from both perspectives of men and women. So fundamentally, the concepts of Hemingway's women is beyond the eternal myth category what Western patriarchal culture called.3.2. Hemingway‘s several female image3.2.1. Perfect image of womenDuring World War I, with the first women's movement achieving orgasm, more and more women have the right to vote and the right to educate. Women's employment has increased and they get economic independence. In1920s "Greenwich Village thought" swept the United States, declaring that "gender equality" of women and men in dress and act. Hemingway indicated that the emancipation of women do not have the formation of opposition to men. Basing on his desire to establish a mutual understanding, mutual trust, mutual support and mutual admiration, he hoped that men and women can complement each other. Thus, Hemingway created a class of beauty, kindness, courage and dedication of the "angel" as the ideal image of women: "A Farewell to Arms" in Catherine, "Whom the Bell Tolls" in the Maria, "Eden" in the The Marita and so on."A Farewell to Arms" is in the background of the First World War in Italy, describing how the war destroyed the people‟ will, killing people's love, condemning people‟s killing each other in the senseless war. But in this crazy and absurd war environment, Hemingway created an ideal image of women, an angelic woman - Catherine. Catherine is the Hemingway of the most gentle, kindest, most romantic and most courageous women. She is a beautiful young British nurse and failed to marry her fiance, who has engaged to her for 8 years and her fiance eventually swallowed by thewar, Catherine is in deep grief. Because of her conservative, traditional pre-war concept, "not give the fiance that he should get," so that their love left irreparably regretted. The first few chapters from the novel can be seen that Catherine's life experience and love experience are richer than Henry. So in their love Catherine comes to be extremely meek and selfless, not for she is ignorance or lack of independence. As Arthur • Ward Horn said: "She's meek is in her first reaction to the death of a loved one, may be an excessive reaction." So, she once fell in love with Henry, never repeating the same mistakes, cherishing the love, which reflected her maturity and loyalty in love. Henry is not serious at first, but getting fun with her, Later he was moved by Catherine‟ s sincere and unselfish love, He turns from a love game player into a passionately devoted loyal lover. In this sense, Catherine is also the same tough guy who, in Hemingway‟s hands, was not only the brave to be unrelenting in the struggle against the plight, but also the winner on the battlefield of life. Henry hopes to ensure the future of their love through the legal form of marriage, while Catherine cherished the true love. Marriage can not guarantee that they will always love each other, especially during the war. However, people can find meaning in love, but not in love they can find eternal life. Catherine attempted to contracept, but eventually fell into the "biological trap",due to death for childbirth bleeding on the operating table. Being courageous and calm when she faced death interpreted Hemingway's "tough guy" image: "A person not born to be defeated, and you shall destroy him, but that is not beat him." Catherine is a image having many a virtue in one - of selfless love and dedication, profound insights on life, a clear understanding of the war, the courage in the face of death. All of these make her well-deserved a “tough guy” among the ranks of Hemingway‟s hands, Catherine is one of the most perfect Hemingway‟s well-characterized image of women.Novel "For Whom the Bell Tolls" is in a background of the Spanish war as an outstanding anti-fascist novel, focusing on describing the three days and nights in the guerrilla stronghold. Actress Maria is a strong, faithful woman. Her parents suffered a tragic death in the war, and she had been abused by the fascists. When Maria first discovered by the guerrillas, "she is not normal ... ... would not say a word, he kept crying. If who touched her, she would like a soaked to the skin of the dog, not a shaking stop. "Although Maria was abused, loss of virginity, the dauntless spirit she showed was admirable. Although cut off long hair, she did not think it was a shame, but an honor. In Jordan's view, Maria‟s spirit was perfect, she gave Jordan comfort and happiness. And he thinks the three days they spent in the mountains was the best time of life. BecauseMaria brought him vigor and vitality, their love is short, but it is eternal. This is not just sex, but also a fusion of body and soul, love and responsibility. Maria's love for Jordan made him aware of the relation of love and revolution, life and death, personal happiness and human destiny. Therefore, at last Jordan arranged Maria to go with a large force, and left himself alone to do the exploding task. It was for the noble and selfless love between them that Jordan maintained grace under pressure, being brave to face the disaster and death. In short, strong and loyal, Maria is another Hemingway‟s ideal image of women.3.2.2 Rebellious image of womenPrevious comments tend to regard Bright in"The Sun Also Rises", Catherine in "Eden", Mrs. Macomber in "Francis Macomber • short happy life," as the women known as "Vamp", who are not traditional, decaying in moral and tempting men, damaging men‟s main location. In fact, after World War I, women were influenced by "gender equality" thought, breaking the shackles of traditional ethics, breaking into the traditional man scope of activities. Hemingway rationally examined and truly characterized the new life state of rebellious women."The Sun Also Rises" focused on the young generation‟ thoughts and moral crisis after World War I ,showing their inner anguish and loss, and they were known as the "Lost Generation". Novel shaped a rebellious new woman image Bright. During the war, she was a nurse, witnessed the cruelty of war. The war took her first husband‟s life, and made her second husband‟s spirit on the verge of collapse. Bright and the hero Jack fell in love in spirit, but Jack lost sexual capacity in the war and it brought extreme emptiness to Bright so that she constantly searched for lust with men, which made Jack fee painful, but the greatest pain is the pain left from the war, the war made his physical existence be completely negative. Both psychologically and spiritually, Bright has been hurt greatly. To escape the pain, with her bold dress Bright acted daringly and rebelliously. In a soft short skirt, she shattered frankly into public places, flirting in the bar drinking, participating the Basque festival carnival, watching the Panpu Lona…s Bullfight, going everywhere for sensual pleasures. Abandoning the traditional role of women, Bright was an individual, attractive women. The male characters in the novel ,without exception, obsessed in Bright. Cohen was impressed by her beauty, around her day and night; Kabur‟s heart was extremely painful, drunk every day, expecting her to return to his side; Gorton though not explicitly pursue Bright, but praise her without stop; Using money in exchange for love, Mpiples promised toemploy ten thousand dollars to lure Bright to go on a holiday with him; Lomalo also fell in love with Bright and wanted to marry her. Facing many suitors, she absolutely released her energy in the social communication and sexual charm, around them, and openly said they did not give up any, so it increased her choice for affection. What she has done in a great extent is retaliation for the pain she suffered Because of her not submissive, and her distinctive personality, but got a notoriety "A woman is not feminine". This is only a prejudice. Hemingway saw her as the new women's representative. By this new image, Hemingway clearly conveyed his sympathy and support for new women. Bright's behavior, indicated not only the new women's rebellion against society, but also the "lost generation" in the way of women seeking relief.3.2.3 Neutral image of womenGuan Ming Fu‟s analysis showed that Hemingway prefered the neutral dressed women, and appreciated the independent, autonomous neutral characters of women. Hemingway's mother, a tough character, full of male characteristics did things arbitrarily. While young, he was dressed as a girl, which caused psychological gender confusion. Beautiful, gentle first love Agnes‟ rejection to Hemingway is an unforgettable damage , so that he had psychological barriers to women, making him slide into neutral female preference. Hemingway's former two wives before marriage are both gays, and his mentor Gertrude Stein is a lesbian. Mainly in the early 20th century, as the features of sexual liberation and the appearance of treason, the "new woman" appeared. The whole social environment also significantly affected his views of women. Therefore, the neutral distinctive image of women came to exist in Hemingway's works: Catherine in "Garden of Eden", Casalin in"A Farewell to Arms" in the, Bilal in "Whom the Bell Tolls" and so on.In the "Garden of Eden", David's wife, Catherine‟s neutral image is particularly prominent. When finishing cutting short hair, she said: "This is a surprise. I'm a girl, but now I was a boy. I can do anything, anything, what I can do." With her hair‟s color and length changing, her behavior and thinking also changed dramatically. She was not satisfied with the distribution of authority between men and women, wanting to share and occupy the privilege of men. Forgetting all the ethics, she came into a state of complete depravity. She exchanged sex roles with her husband, and also even arranged for her husband another woman, Marita. She himself found a girlfriend and she was free to bold, obviously having homosexual tendencies. Therefore, in sexual orientation andwork attitude, she tended to behave as men; In handling David's marriage, the intense jealousy made her tend to be women. Therefore, from the appearance to the psychology, she is a neutral image. The image of the heroine Casa Ling in "A Farewell to Arms" is neutral. Casa Ling, who combines the characteristics of women: long hair, beautiful, gentle, humble, to do all things dominated by the views of Henry, to bear the pain of birth and suffer back and forth for Henry and, to fear of torture, but She doesn‟t regret at all. But in spite of the above, the feminine side of women were neutral. Casa Ling Henry inadvertently brought to cut hair, "I took my hair cut, then we two are exactly the same ". Even though she did n‟t cut the hair, her conversation and behavior shows she has a subconscious desire to be neutral. At the end Casa Ling died result from a narrow pelvis while giving birth, the child also died. Offspring are female-specific capabilities and features. Her innate physical defects make her not able to be one hundred percent of women to appear. From this perspective, the image of Casa Ling is neutral."Whom the Bell Tolls," although the wife of Bilal ,a guerrilla, has a feminine appearance ,her personality has demonstrated a clear masculine characteristics, she is a strong, courageous, strong-minded women, owning fighting spirit, forming sharp contrast with her cowardly guerrilla Peer .Fellows evaluated Bilal, "a bit wild," she admits by herself, "I am a quasi-hero if replacing a man." Bilal who lacked femininity and revealed men's features has a strong and neutral characteristics.3.2.4. Sublimation of the Female Image"The Old Man and the Sea" is one of Hemingway's masterpiece, and he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1954. There is not a female role in the book, so some critics say that Hemingway only concerned with the world of men, ignored women in the world. In fact, through the analysis of the image of the sea, we found that the sea is the Hemingway …s sublimation of female images. The image of the sea permeated in "The Old Man and the Sea". The sea is the material world that old Santiago survived and all of his life. The sea is a woman, and contains a large number of possibilities and its fecundity, so she prepares for the elderly man a gigantic and mysterious fish, providing a showcase for his courage and perseverance. Li Xiaobing (2008) analyzes that in the old man‟s mind, the sea is like a beautiful and plump woman to be attractive, on which he based his life. The old man is old, and he has no wife, no children, no property, but he cherished the sea,Sea treasures wonderful memories of the old man: "He dreamed of Africa when he saw in hischildhood, the dazzling long golden beaches and white beaches, and the towering headlands and brown mountains. He was now back to coast every night, and in dreams heard the rumble of the waves lapping the shore, saw the native line sailing through the waves "The sea is pure and quiet when calm and sunny, when the hot-tempered and self-willed there are monstrous storms. The old man viewed sea as his intimate but fickle lover, "She has love and hate, She sometimes spreads temper, and even mischievous because that she could not control his temper as an attractive woman like moon, the moon can also attract Ocean. " The broad sea is also like a gentle mother, is not only the source all food and clothing comes from, but also the spirit mind lies in. The sea is the god of the old man: " Before it was getting dark, the boat sails over the sea, where Sargasso together weave into a vast, gently rolling along the light wave. The old man thought under that yellow satin was the sea goddess , immersing in the love . "Sea is a symbol of the supreme Creator, fickle, high and unpredictable, hold ing the vitality, its infinite vitality. Her broadness made the old experience enough into the mysteries of the unknown areas of reality, and she is vast enough to allow the old to live in eternity! Hemingway used the "sea" to show a desire of men to women of all: both the lover, and is the mother; both a banshee, but also a goddess; both the fate of the soul, but also the childhood home. This is the female characters Hemingway has never refered to.Through a detailed and in-depth excavation and comprehensive fairly interpretation on Hemingway's work , we found that Hemingway has a strong sense of women. Basing on his point of view of modern civilization, he obverse women's unique position ,to probe profound analysis of the inner world of women, recording their love and hate, pain and joy, confusion and confusion, creating a series of distinctive personality traits of female characters and a women world very different from others.4. ConclusionHemingway is a wonderful writer of greatly artistic talent, he adopted both traditional romanticism, realism, and various modern schools. forming his own writing type. His world is a complex world, which is not easy to clearly understand by us.The literary w orld he created is rich and colorful. It shouldn‟t conclude so simply, or just from one respect.Views of women on Hemingway help us with a more profound understanding thecontents of the works of Hemingway‟s. And these views make us grasp the creative thinking and art style of Hemingway comprehensively. Such Hemingway‟s contradiction in Women reflects the attitudes conducive to gender of him and his contemporary from the side at that time .It helps us not only have a more comprehensive understanding of culture, but also help us to think about gender patterns of modern society. There must be mutual respect to the men and women‟s differences between the sexes, using dialogue, mutual understanding instead of conflicts and confrontation between the sexes. Gender relations will move toward the ultimate harmony, developing into coexistence direction.AcknowledgementsWhile I know it is impossible to name all the people who assisted me with the thesis, I would like to extend my gratitude to the following people.
