Delight and great joy still could be seen on the faces of the Chinese people after the historic announcement that Beijing had been awarded the 2020 Olympics last Friday. In a secret ballot, the International Olympic Committee (委员会) (IOC) chose Beijing over Toronto, Istanbul, Paris, and Osaka.
Beijing gained victory in the second round of voting by a wide margin-56 votes to Beijing, 22 for Toronto, 18 for Paris and nine for Istanbul. Osaka
had been re moved after getting just six votes in the first round! “This will be very beneficial for China and for the rest of the world,” said IOC President Samaranch who stepped down on Monday after 21 years as president.
“This has a huge meaning for us,” said Zhang Mingeng, a real estate mougul (房地产大亨) in Beijing. “It constitutes recognition of China by the international community.”
The IOC victory is but one of two major events facing China this year, each with great potential (潜在的) significance for the future of China and its political system.
In November, China is expected to enter the World Trade Organization (WTO) and agree to market-opening measures. “Both the Olympics and the WTO symbolize a great deal for China,” said Zhang. “They are both challenges and oppo rtunities.”
“Obviously the bid is going to be good for economic growth and job opportunities,” said Pan Yong, a taxi driver. “I will take time to learn English to be a volunteer to welcome thousands of foreign tourists and athletes to Beijing in 2020.”

Wind is the great maker of waves.(波浪) There are exceptions, such as the tidal ( 潮汐的 ) waves sometimes produced by earthquakes under the sea . But the waves most of us know are produced by winds blowing over the sea.
Now before constructing an imaginary life history of a typical wave, we need to know certain physical things about it. A wave has height, from trough (low point) to crest (high point). It has length --- the distance from this crest to that of the following wave. The period of the wave means the time it takes for succeeding crests to pass a fixed point. None of these things stays the same --- for all depend upon the wind, upon the depth of the water and many other matters .
The water that makes up a wave does not advance with it across the sea. Each drop of water turns around in a little circle with the passing of the wave, but returns very nearly to its original position. And it is fortunate that this is so. For if the huge masses of water that make up a wave actually moved across the sea, sailing would be impossible.
If we want to find the speed of a wave, we may use the following way: Speed = wavelength(波长)×frequency(频率)
Here, wavelength is the distance between two high points ( crests ) , frequency means the number of cycles per second .
65. What causes waves?
A.Earthquakes and nothing else.
B. Only wind.
C.Wind causes most waves.
D. Wind causes some waves.
66. Which of the following is true according to the passage?
A.The water of a wave moves away across the sea.
B.The water of a wave remains almost at the same place.
C.The water of a wave goes with the passing of the wave.
D.The length of a wave means the distance from the top of a wave
to the bottom.
67. The speed of Wave 1 is 100cm/s , frequency 10 . The frequency of Wave
2 is 300, while its speed is twice that of Wave 1. Which of the following
is right?
A.The wavelength of the two are equal.
B.The wavelength of Wave 1 is 10 times longer than that of Wave 2.
C.The wavelength of Wave 2 is longer than that of Wave 1.
D.The wavelength of Wave 1 is longer than that of Wave 2.

People in the United States honor their parents with two special days: Mother’s Day , on the second Sunday in May, and Father’s Day, on the third
Sunday in June . These days are set aside to show love and respect for parents. They raise their children and educate them to be responsible citizens .They give love and care .These two days offer an opportunity to think about the changing roles of mothers and fathers. More mothers now work outside the home . More fathers must help with child-care.
These two special days are celebrated in many different ways. On Mo ther’s Day people wear carnations(康乃馨) . A red one symbolizes a living mother. A white one shows that the mother is dead . Many people attend religious services to honor parents . It is also a day when people whose parents are dead visit the cemetery. On these days families get together at home, as well as in restaurants. They often have outdoor barbecues for Father’s Day. These are days of fun and good feelings and memories.
Another tradition is to give cards and gifts. Children make them in school. Many people make their own presents. These are valued more than the ones bought in stores .It is not the value of the gift that is important, but it is “the thought that counts”. Greeting card stores, florists, candy(糖果) makers, bakeries , telephone companies ,and other stores do a lot of business during these holidays .

A “blogger” is a person who writes on an Internet computer Web site calle d a “blog”(博客). The word “blog” is a short way of saying Web log, or personal Web site. Anyone can start a blog, and they can write about anything they like.
There are millions of blogs on the Internet today. They provide news, information and ideas to many people who read them. They contain links to other Web sites. And they provide a place for people to write their ideas and react (反应 ) to the ideas of others.
A research company called Perseus has studied more than 3000 Web logs. It says that blogs are most popular with teenage girls. They use them to let their friends know what is happening in their lives. The study also says
that more than 100,000 bloggers stopped taking part in the activity after a year.
However, some people develop serious blogs to present political and other ideas. For example, the Republican and Democratic(民主) parties in the southern state of Kentucky recently started their own blogs. And American companies are beginning to use blogs to advertise their products.
At the same time, some long-standing blogs have ended. Last week, blogging leader Dave Winer closed his free blog service, . He says the site became too costly to continue. He started the blog four years ago, and thousands of people had written on it. They are now upset because they did not know that the site was closing.
One blog that is still going strong is called Rebecca's Pocket. Rebecca Blood created the Web site in 1999. She wrote about the history of blogs on the site. That article led to a book called “The Weblog Handbook”. It has been translated into four languages so far.
Ms Blood says Rebecca's Pocket gets about 30,000 visitors a month. She writes about anything and everything -- politics, culture and movies. She recently provided medical advice. And she wrote about how to prevent people from stealing money from on-line bank accounts.

Although I had left school against the advice of my teachers, I had, without telling anyone, tried to continue my studies in literature at evening classes. It was a tiresome walk from one end of the city to another and to sit among adults was uninteresting. I was the youngest in the class, so the friendship I knew at school was absent. I put up with(忍受)it for a short period. It was too long a walk on cold winter's nights and it was hard to put my heart into Shakespeare with wet shoes and trousers. So I continued reading books and started writing poetry at home.
By chance, I won some prizes and awards for literature. A young woman from a TV company came to the college one day. She told me that I had won a national poetry award. I stared at her in astonishment and disbelief. She wanted to make a short film about me, to which I said: “No, I couldn't do that.” Not that I had any real excuse. I was just frightened. In the end she persuaded me that I should do it the following day.
So I did. They made a short film of me reading one of my poems and I became more interested in literature than ever. I wondered what I should do after this, and decided some weeks later that I could not imagine myself spending the rest of my days dealing with machines. So one evening, I hesitatingly told my parents that I wanted to return to school. They were greatly surprised and, I think, a little afraid but they did not try to persuade me not to. They wanted to know if I was sure, if I knew what it meant and whether I realized that if I gave up my job training, it would be very difficult to get a good job. But nothing could stop me, and they asked about the matter no further.
