Passage B“How many copies do you want printed, Mr. Greeley?”“Five thousand!”The answer was snapped back without hesitation. “But, sir,”the press foreman protested, “we have subscriptions for only five hundred newspapers.”“We’ll sell them or give them away.”The presses started rolling, sending a thundering noise out over the sleeping streets of New York City. The New York Tribune was born. The newspaper’s founder, owner, and editor, Horace Greeley, anxiously snatched the first copy as it came sliding off the press. This was his dream of many years that he held in his hand. It was as precious as a child. Its birth was the result of years of poverty, hard work, and disappointments.Hard luck and misfortune had followed Horace all his life. He was born of poor parents on February 3, 1811, on a small farm in New Hampshire. During his early childhood, the Greeley family rarely had enough to eat. They moved from one farm to another because they could not pay their debts. Young Horace’s only boyhood fun was reading—when he could snatch a few moments during a long working day.“The printed word always fascinated Horace. When he was only ten years old, he applied for a job as an apprentice in a printing shop. But he didn’t get the job because he was too young.Four years later, Horace walked eleven miles to East Poultney in Vermont to answer an ad. A paper called the Northern Spectator had a job for a boy. The editor asked him why he wanted to boa printer, Horace spoke up boldly: “Because, sir, I want to learn all I can about newspapers.”The editor looked at the oddly dressed boy. Finally he said, “You’ve got the job, son.”For the first six months, room and board would be the only pay for his work. After that, he would get room and board and forty dollars a year. Horace hurried home to shout the good news to his family. When he got there, he learned that his family was about to move again—this time to Pennsylvania. Horace decided to stay and work. Mrs. Greeley hated leaving her son behind, but gave her consent. Twice during his apprenticeship Horace walked six hundred miles to visit his family. Each time, he took all the money he had saved and gave it to his father. The Spectator failed after Horace had spent four years working for it. He joined his family in Erie, Pennsylvania, and got a job on the Erie Gazette. Half the money he earned he gave to his family. The other half he saved to go to New York. When he was twenty, Horace arrived in New York with ten dollars in his pocket. He was turned down twice when he asked for a job. Finally he became a typesetter for John T West’s Printery. The only reason Horace got the job was that it was so difficult other printers wouldn’t take it. His job was to set a very small edition of the Bible. Horace almost ruined his eyes at that job.As young Greeley’s skill grew, better jobs came his way. He could have bought better clothes and moved out of his dingy room. But he was used to being poor, and his habits did not change He spent practically nothing on himself. Even after his Tribune became a success, he lived as if he hadn’t enough money for his next meal. The Tribune grew and thrived. It was unlike any newspaper ever printed before in the United States. Greeley started a new type of journalism. His news stories were truthful and accurate His editorials attacked as well as praised. Many people disagreed with what he wrote, but still they read it. The Tribune became America’s first nationwide newspaper. It was read as eagerly in the Midwest and Far West as it was in the East. Greeley’s thundering editorials became the most powerful voice in the land. Greeley and his Tribune fought for many causes. He was the first to come out for the right of women to vote. His Tribune was the leader in demanding protection for homesteads in the West. He aroused the north in the fight against slavery. During a depression in the East, joblessmen asked what they could do to support themselves. Said Greeley: “Go West, young man, go West!”As the Tribune gained more power, Greeley became more interested in politics He led in forming and naming the Republican Party. He, more than any other man, was responsible for Abraham Lincoln’s being named to run for President.Horace Greeley was first of all a successful newspaperman. He was also a powerful political leader. But he was not a popular man. In 1872 he ran for President against Ulysses S Grant. Grant was re-elected by an overwhelming margin.Greeley was then in deep mourning over the recent death of his wife. He was heart-broken over losing the election. He never recovered from the double blow only weeks after his defeat, he died in New York City. His beloved Tribune lived on after him as the monument he wanted. Just before died, he wrote:“I cherish the hope that the journal I projected and established will live and flourish long after I shall have mouldered into forgotten dust, and that the stone that covers my ashes may bear to future eyes the still intelligible inscription, Founder of the New York Tribune.”6. Horace gladly accepted his first job ______.A. because of the kind of work it wasB. because of the high salary offeredC. because of the location of the officeD. became he couldn’t find any other job7.

Reading Comprehension (70 MIN, 40 points)Section 1 Multiple Choice Questions (30 points, 2 points for each)Directions: In this section there are three passages followed by questions or unfinished statements, each with four suggested answers marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that you think is the best answer. Mark your answers on your answer sheet.Passage OneSpeaking English fluently and accurately is a goal of many people studying English in China. Fluency can be simply defined as “being able to communicate ideas without having to stop and think too much about what one is s aying”; speaking accurately means, “speaking without errors of grammar and vocabulary.”The problem is that many students find that if they try to speak fast, they make more mistakes. And, if they slow down, there may be fewer errors but it can sound unnatural. So, how do we balance accuracy and fluency in spoken English? It can depend on the manner in which one has studied English in the past. People who tend to focus on accuracy may find that they worry too much about making mistakes. This can make them nervous or embarrassed about speaking English in public. As a result, their spoken English might not improve. This means that although they know English grammar and vocabulary well, they might not be able to hold a good conversation. On the other hand, there are those who really like to talk and are willing to try their language out even if they make mistakes. This willingness to take risks helps them speak more fluently. But, if they make a lot of mistakes, they may find it difficult to get their ideas across. The debate about which is more important —fluency or accuracy —in the English language has lasted for a long time. Still, one thing is clear: speaking a language well needs both fluency and accuracy. How can we be sure that we can develop both? The following tips could helpFind the problemWhat kind of person are you — one who focuses on accuracy or fluency? The first step is to recognize your problem and go to work on it. Think about situationswhere you’ve used English and how you felt about making mistakes. Do you always try some new language even though it might not be correct? Or do you feel embarrassed by mistakes?Focus on one problem at a timeWhen you speak English, find the mistakes you make most often. One mistake often mad e is omitting the “s” from the third person singular verb. Or you may speak too slowly as if you were searching for the right word and correct grammar. The next time you use English, try to focus on it. If you have a problem with the third person singular, try to concentrate on when you make such errors. Don’t spend time thinking about other mistakes. By choosing an area to work on, you can isolate problems and help yourself overcome them.Vary your practiceIf you go to an English corner or an English club, try to change the types of activities you take part in so that you practice both fluency and accuracy. Public speaking allows you to slow down and be sure you have time to concentrate on the language. Meanwhile, discussions are good practice for fluency, especially if you don’t stop each time a mistake is made.Learn the difference between fluency and speedSome Chinese think that speaking fast is the same as speaking fluently. In fact, speaking fluently involves not only speed. It also involves stress, pronunciation and intonation. If you make a mistake in these, speaking fast will only make it worse. Don't sacrifice understanding for speed.Try recording yourselfTake a recorder and record a conversation with a friend or a speech or monologue as you do it naturally! two- or three-minute recording is enough. When you’ve finished, listen to it yourself. Can you identify and correct any errors? Make it a regular practice. The more you record yourself, the more confident and natural sounding you will become.41.Many learners of English in China usually cherish a dream of speaking English.A.continuously, and almost without mistakesB.brokenly, but with no mistakesC.continually, and with quite a number of mistakes here and thereD.hesitatingly, but with not too many mistakes42.Which of the following is NOT a tip mentioned in the passage?A.To identify your problem.B.To make efforts to imitate native speakers.C.To concentrate on one problem at a time.D.To check your own talk or speech.43.According to the writer, fluency in speaking involves the following factors EXCEPT .A.pitchB. speedC. pronunciationD. stress44.What is the possible title of the passage?A.How to Speak Fluent English.B.Accuracy in Speaking English.C.Problems in Speaking EnglishD.Fluency and Accuracy in Speaking English.45.Why is it necessary to record yourself when you learn to speak English?A.You will become more confident.B.You will become more fluent.C.You will become more confident and natural-sounding.D.You will become more accurate.Passage TwoI thought the world was caving in, for the first time ever I lost somebody I loved; he didn’t die, he just went away, but I still measure all pain by the hurt Rene caused me.It was a very nice childhood, an adolescence most people would wish to have. Our neighbours had a son, and my wonderful childhood was shared with Rene;basically, we grew up together, we spent every day together, went to school together, we did all the things that children can do. It was a childhood spent in the woods, discovering the beautiful seasons, there was an abundance of produce that grew in the wild, and we went mushrooming and frog- hunting. The adventures that children go through in the making of a friendship, building a tree house and spending night in the forest — and losing our way back home; these things create fantastic fabric to the friendship. There was the loving element, too; he was very caring. Rene was tall and strong, and he would be my defender; if anyone ever teased me, he would be there. And life seemed marvelous, it seemed full of sunshine, full of incredible, beautiful things to discover, and I looked forward so much to growing up with Rene. And then at the age of 14, his parents moved to the south of France, and we were in the east of France, which is 750 kilometers away ... the south of France sounded like the end of the world.Well, our parents realized it would be very traumatic, and they did not know how to break the news, so they just announced it the day before. It was a beautiful summer’s day, around five o’clock in the evening, and both parents came and said: “We are moving away, and obviously Rene will have to come with us.”I went quietly for the news to sink in; at first it was sheer disbelief, numbness. I couldn’t sleep, and then in the night I understood the impact of the news, I understood that my life would be totally separate from his, and I had to be by myself, alone. And although he was only going away, he did not die, it was the worst loss I have ever had in my life, still, now, and thirty years later I have not received another shock of that nature.I had other friends, but never did I achieve that kind of closeness. My world completely collapsed, and nothing was the same, people, the classroom, nature, the country, and butterflies.Maybe because he was more mature he understood a bit better that it was part of life and that life brings people together and separates them, and distance is not necessarily the end.He accepted that life would separate us, he didn’t see it as something final; it was my dramatic side to see only the negative side, self-pity in a way. He is now living a happy life in Provence with a beautiful wife and two lovely daughters, and he is coming here next year, so it is going to be quite wonderful. It is the first time he has ever come to England. He’s a good Frenchman; he does not speak word of English.Hopefully, we will see each other more, but it is not essential. We now have a beautifully matured, adult friendship where it is easy to talk about anything because we feel totally at ease. There is not a single bitter note, there are no power games, there is nothing secret, there is nothing which detracts from the purity of it.46.Which of the following was NOT among the things that the two kids might have done in the woods?A.Going mushrooming.B. Hunting frogs.C. Making a campfire.D. Building a tree house.47.Which of the following is closest in meaning to the word teased in paragraph 3?A.scolded.B. mocked.C. attacked.D. loved.48.Rene accepted that fact that he would have to be separated from his friend in away.A.realisticB. nonchalantC. moodyD. reluctant49.How can we describe the writer’s feeling when he learned that Rene would move away?A.The writer felt disappointed.B.The writer felt happy.C.The writer accepted the news peacefully.D.The writer felt extremely shocked an painful.50.What might be the nationality of the writer?A.The writer might be of French nationality.B.The writer might be of British nationality.C.The writer might be of German nationality.D.The writer might be of Italian nationality.Passage ThreeHuman needs seem endless. When a hungry man gets a meal, he begins to think about an overcoat; when a manager gets a new sports car, a big house and pleasure boats dance into view. The many needs of mankind might be regarded as making up several levels. When there is money enough to satisfy one level of needs, another level appears. The first and most basic level of needs involves food. Once this level is satisfied, the second level of needs, clothing and some sort of shelter appears. By the end of World War II, these needs were satisfied for a great majority of Americans. Then a third level appeared. It included such items as automobiles and new houses.By 1957 or 1958 this third level of needs was fairly well satisfied. Then, in the late 1950s, a fourth level of needs appeared: the “life enriching” level. While the other levels involve physical satisfaction, that is, the feeding, comfort safety, and transportation, this level stresses mental needs for recognition, achievement, and happiness It includes a variety of goods and services, many of which could be called “luxury” items. Among them are vacation trips, the best medical and dental care, and recreation. Also included here are fancy goods and the latest styles in clothing. On the fourth level, a lot of money is spent on services, while on the first three levels more is spent on goods. Will consumers raise their sights to a fifth level of needs as their income increases, or will they continue to demand luxuries and personal services on the fourth level?A fifth level would probably involve needs that can be achieved best by community action. Consumers may be spending more on taxes to pay for government action against disease, ignorance, crime, and prejudice. After filling our stomachs, our clothes closets, our garages, our teeth, and our minds, we now may seek to ensure the health, safety, and leisure to enjoy more fully the good things on the first four levels.51.According to the passage, man will begin to think about such needs as housing and clothing only when .A.he has saved up enough moneyB.he has grown dissatisfied with his simple shelterC.he has satisfied his hungerD.he has learned to build houses52.It can be inferred from the passage that by the end of World War II, most Americans .A.were very richB.lived in povertyC.had the good things on the first three levelsD.did not own automobiles53.Which of the following is NOT related to “physical satisfaction”?A.A successful career.B. A comfortable home.C. A good meal.D. A family car.54.The author tends to think that the fifth level .A.would be little better than the fourth levelB.may be a lot more desirable than the first fourC.can be the last and most satisfying levelD.will become attainable before the government takes actions55.What is the main concern of man on the fourth level?A.The more mental satisfaction, the better.B.The more physical satisfaction, the betterC.The more health and safety, the better.D.The more leisure, the better.Section 2 Short Answer Questions (10 points,2 points for each)Directions: Read the following passage and then, based on the information from the following passage, answer in your own words the questions which follow the passage and write your answer in the corresponding space in your answer sheet. It’s an annual argument. Do we or do we not go on holiday? My partner says nobecause the boiler could go, or the roof fall off, and we have no savings to save us. I say that you only live once and we work hard and what’s the point if you can’t go on holiday. The joy of a recession means no argument next year –we just won’t go.Since money is known to be one of the things most likely to bring a relationship to its knees, we should be grateful. For many families the recession means more than not booking a holiday. A YouGov poll of 2,000 people found 22% said they were arguing more with their partners because of concerns about money. What’s less clear is whether divorce and separation rates rise in a recession — financial pressures mean couples argue more but make splitting up less affordable. A recent research shows arguments about money were especially damaging to couples. Disputes were characterized by intense verbal aggression, tended to be repeated and not resolved, and made men, more than women, extremely angry.Kim Stephenson, an occupational psychologist, believes money is such a big deal because of what it symbolizes, which may be different things to men and women. “People can say the same things about money but have different conceptions of what it is for,” he explains. “They will say it’s to save, to spend, for security, for freedom, to show someone you love them.” He says men are more likely to see money as a way of buying status and of showing their parents that they’ve achieved something.“The biggest problem is that couples assume each other knows what is going on with their finances, but they don’t. There seems to be more of a taboo about talking about money than talking about death. But you both need to know what you are doing, who is paying what into the joint account and how much you keep separately. In a healthy relationship you don’t have to agree about money, but you have to talk abou t it.”56.What does the author say about going on holidays?57.What does the author mean by saying “money is known… to bring a relationship to its knees”(Line1 Para. 2)?58.What does the YouGov poll of 2000 people discover?59.What does Kim Stephenson believe?60.What does the author suggests at the end of the passage?Part III. Writing (60 MIN, 40 points)Directions: Read the following report, and then write an article (not a poem, short story or play) of about 400 words on the topic: Is Homeschooling a Better Way to Learn? You can also decide a title for your article.Marks will be awarded for content relevance, content sufficiency, organization and language quality. Failure to follow the above instructions may result in a loss of marks.Homeschooling —A Better Way to Learn?Homeschooling was traditionally used for students who could not attend school because of behavioral or learning difficulties. Today, however, more parents are taking on the responsibility of educating their children at home due to dissatisfaction with the education system.Advocates of homeschooling believe children learn better when they are in a secure, loving environment. They point out that homeschooled children reportedly do just as well as those who have been in the classroom. Many psychologists see the home as the most natural learning environment. Parents who homeschool argue that they can monitor their children’s education and give them the attention that is lacking in a traditional school setting. Students can also pick and choose what to study and when to study, thus enabling them to learn at their own pace.In contrast, critics of homeschooling say that children who are not in the classroom miss out on learning important social skills because they have little interaction with their peers. Many critics of homeschooling have raised concerns about the ability of parents to teach their kids effectively. Many parents who homeschool have no teacher training and are not competent educators of all the subjects taught in schools.。
