相反,他们承担生活中自己应尽的责任。
翻译练习:师生缘(校园餐厅)(1) American Space, Chinese PlaceAmerican have a sense of space, not of place. Go to an American home in exurbia, and almost the first thing you do is drift toward the picture window. How curious that the first compliment you pay your host inside his house is to say how lovely it is outside his house! He is pleased that you should admire his vistas. The distant horizon is not merely a line separating earth from sky, it is a symbol of the future. The American is not rooted in his place, however lovely: his eyes are drawn by the expanding space to a point on the horizon, which is his future.By contrast, consider the traditional Chinese home, blank walls enclose it. Outside is a courtyard with perhaps a miniature garden around a corner. Once inside his private compound you are wrapped in an ambiance of calm beauty, an ordered world of buildings, pavement, rock, and decorative vegetation. But you have no distant view: nowhere does space open out before you, the only open space is the sky above. The Chinese is rooted in his place.(2)Go DutchThen what was once called the Women’s Lib came along and females of my generation claimed that we wanted equality. We didn’t want doors opened for us, we didn’t want bills paid. Suddenly, being wined and dined was considered insulting, part of the male conspiracy to keep us in our place. So we got out our checkbooks and went Dutch. What a huge mistakethat was! If I had carried on assuming I’d be paid for, I would not only have saved a lot of money, but a lot of worry as well. I used to spend entire meals wondering what to do when the bill arrived. Should I offer to pay half? If I don’t, will he expect me to kiss him or…And if he’s paying, can I still have the lobster? How fair is it of me even to offer to pay half when I know I’ll be disappointed in him if he accepted? And what if he’s got less money than me, should I pay for it all?(3) 过节孩提时住在农村,常常盼望过节。

翻译练习(一)Ultrahard materials are used in many applications, from cutting and polishing tools to wear-resistant coatings. Diamond remains the hardest known material, despite years of synthetic and theoretical efforts to improve upon it. However even diamond has limitations. It is not effective for cutting ferrous metals, including steel. Boron nitride-the second-hardest material, with a structure analogous to that of diamond-can be used to cut ferrous metals. However, it does not occur naturally and must be synthesized under conditions of extreme pressure and temperature, making it quite expensive. Rough winds do shake the darling buds ofMay,And summer's lease hath all too short a date. Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines, And often is his gold complexion dimm'd; And every fair from fair sometime declines, By chance or nature's changing course untrimm'd;But thy eternal summer shall not fadeNor lose possession of that fair thou ow'st; Nor shall Death brag thou wander'st in his shade,When in eternal lines to time thou grow'st: So long as men can breathe or eyes can see, So long lives this, and this gives life to thee. She Walks in BeautyGeorge Gordon Byron乔治·拜伦1788-1824She walks in beauty, like the nightOf cloudless climes and starry skies; And all that 's best of dark and brightMeet in her aspect and her eyes:Thus mellow'd to that tender lightWhich heaven to gaudy day denies. One shade the more, one ray the less,Had half impair'd the nameless grace Which waves in every raven tress,Or softly lightens o'er her face;Where thoughts serenely sweet express How pure, how dear their dwelling-place.And on that cheek, and o'er that brow,So soft, so calm, yet eloquent,The smiles that win, the tints that glow,But tell of days in goodness spent,A mind at peace with all below,A heart whose love is innocent! How do I love thee Elizabeth Barrett Browning (1806-1861) 英国勃朗宁夫人How do I love thee? I hear the church bells ring, Oh, say, what may it be?""Tis a fog-bell on a rock bound coast!" -- And he steered for the open sea."O father! I hear the sound of guns;Oh, say, what may it be?"Some ship in distress, that cannot liveIn such an angry sea!" "O father! I see a gleaming light.Oh say, what may it be?"But the father answered never a word,A frozen corpse was he.Lashed to the helm, all stiff and stark,With his face turned to the skies,The lantern gleamed through the gleaming snowOn his fixed and glassy eyes. Then the maiden clasped her hands and prayedThat saved she might be;And she thought of Christ, who stilled the wave,On the Lake of Galilee. And fast through the midnight dark and drear, Through the whistling sleet and snow,Like a sheeted ghost, the vessel sweptTow'rds the reef of Norman's Woe.And ever the fitful gusts betweenA sound came from the land;It was the sound of the trampling surf,On the rocks and hard sea-sand.The breakers were right beneath her bows, She drifted a dreary wreck,And a whooping billow swept the crewLike icicles from her deck. She struck where the white and fleecy waves Looked soft as carded wool,But the cruel rocks, they gored her sideLike the horns of an angry bull. Her rattling shrouds, all sheathed in ice, With the masts went by the board;Like a vessel of glass, she stove and sank,Ho!
