forward to and won’t need me to support them. It all really gets me down.
With such lousy marks on my transcript I couldn’t get into a good cramming class – only into one that’s got kids with really hopeless scores in it. We’re all pretty down about it. One of the boys complained in class, “What crimes have we committed? Why’ve we got to work even harder than adults?” “Your crime was failing the college entrance exams,” the teacher said, “and that’s serious. It isn’t easy for your parents to find the money to send you to this class. You have to feel sorry for them.” He had us all in tears. But who feels sorry for us?
college the only thing for one to do in education? 3. What are the social, economical and cultural reasons for
this nation-wide college mania?

Intensive Reading: Para. 1-2
Room for the Future
At the age of forty-five, my usually well-ordered life was filled with changes. After twenty-two years of working for a major bank, a downsizing wave resulted in the elimination of over one hundred jobs, mine being one of them.
Para. 6
Oral presentations were often required for one class. I remember thinking that if I had known this beforehand, I would have taken something else to achieve my required credits. By nature, I am a rather reserved individual, and speaking in front of people terrified me. As I stood in front of the other adults with whom I shared a common goal, my knees were visibly knocking, and my heartbeat almost audible. Somehow, I found my voice and made my presentation with effort. The next time it was easier, and soon, I was starting to enjoy it a little. Later in the year, I even interviewed a local reporter for an English assignment, much to the amazement of my teacher. My confidence level rose. Suddenly I felt like I could accomplish anything.

The term is used mainly in the United States and parts of Canada. Recognized forms of post-secondary learning activities within the domain include: degree credit courses by non-traditional students, non-degree career training, workforce training, formal personal enrichment courses (both on-campus and online), self-directed learning (such as through Internet interest groups, clubs or personal research activities) andexperiential learning as applied to problem solving.Experiential LearningExperiential learning is theprocess of making meaning from direct experience. It is learning through reflection on doing, which is often contrasted with rote learning(死记硬背). Experiential learning focuses on the learning process for the individual. An example of experiential learning is going to the zoo and learning through observation and interaction with the zoo environment, as opposed to reading about animals from a book. Thus, one makes discoveries and experiments with knowledge firsthand, instead of hearing or reading about others’ experiences.DiscussionHow does technology change people’s work and life?Since the dawn of time, humans have developed tools and technology to assist in the pursuit of their goals. Large shifts in technology have resulted in large shifts in social structures, and in how individuals both contribute to society and make a living. Today, advances in technology are rapidly making it possible to automate much of the work currently carried out by humans. This applies not only to blue-collar jobs through robotics and the Internet of Things, but also towhite-collar work through artificial intelligence. The wide applicability of these technologies has led to broad concern about thedestruction of jobs. Indeed, according to a 2014 Oxford study, 47% of jobs in the US could be replaced by automated processes in the next two decades. Of course, while technology has always removed the need for some types of jobs, as many havenoticed, it also creates new ones. Nine of the top ten most in-demand jobs in the latest years did not exist in 2003, suggesting that the latest technological revolution is creating new employment opportunities. On the other hand, people are working harder and are more enslaved to their work than before. More people are seen walking around with laptops or smartphones. They’re becoming slaves to high technology. So it’s not high-tech, but kind of high-shackles or high-manacles. Unfortunately, there’s no escape. How can you foster love for your work?In general, it is hard to foster love for your work, especially if you get bored with your work or if you do not feel appreciated. So if you find it hard to love what you do, there are several ways for you to develop a more positive attitude towards work. With time and effort, you may start to find that you are looking forward to work rather than dreading it.Step 1: Change the way you work. When work becomes mundane, it can feel more difficult to face. In these situations, it might be helpful to change your approach. This is sometimes called job enrichment.Step 2: Focus on the positive aspects of your job. If you are not enjoying your job, you usually tend to focus your mind on all of the negative aspects of it. To reverse the trend, you need to identify what you like about your job and start focusing on those positive aspects instead.Step 3: Practice gratitude. If you have negative thoughts about going to work each day, try keeping a list of the things that you are grateful for. Practicing gratitude can help you to feel happier overall and may also help you see your job in a more positive light.Step 4: Look at the big picture. Sometimes work may become a chore if little things start to bother you more than they should. If you find yourself focusing on minor issues at work, such as a rudecustomer or making a mistake, remind yourself that these are not important in the grand scheme of things.Step 5: Improve other parts of your life. Sometimes a job can be more difficult to engage with when other parts of your life are out of balance. Consider other aspects of your life that might be making you unhappy.New words:degrade [dɪˈɡreɪd] v. to show or treat sb in a way that makes them seem not worth any respect 降低…身份;侮辱…的人格;使受屈辱;(使)退化,降解;分解;降低,削弱(尤指质量)A dishonest action like that will degrade you.像这样不诚实的行为会使你降低身份。

One is the subject which is concerned more with theories, and the history of theories, than with the storing of the mind with such information and knowledge as theories are built upon: such a subject, and a very popular one, is economics, which consists of a number of complicated and contradictory theories, a subject by no means proved to be a science, usually based on illicit assumptions, the bastard progeny8 of a parent it disowns, ethics. Even philosophy, when divorced from theology and from the knowledge of life and of ascertainable facts, is but a famishing pabulum, or a draught stimulating for a moment, leaving behind drought and disillusion.
Those who have a real genius for acquiring these dead languages are few, and they are pretty likely of their own accord to devote themselves to the Classics – if they are given the opportunity. But there are many more of us who have gifts for modern languages, or for our own language, or for history, who have only a modest capacity for mastering Latin and Greek. We can hardly be expected to realize, during adolescence, that without a foundation of Latin and Greek we remain limited in our power over these other subjects.

Each day we are confronted with many decisions both small and large. We weigh the various factors in front of us and try to make good decisions based upon the information we have at hand. Yet, sometimes, even with adequately reliable information, the decisions we make are still against good judgment. What circumstances can cause people to make bad decisions? 2. Looking back, I think I admired that photo so much, not because of Marie Curie and what she stood for but because she seemed so exotic — or maybe because of how her arms encircled her girls. My own mother lay in the hospital, recovering from a grave injury in a car crash. I wanted her to hold me, but she couldn't. So, instead, I idolized Marie, who in my mind became the strongest and most capable woman in the world.

Hongbang tailor (红帮裁缝) is a career that can be traced to the end of the Qing dynasty. Because Western-style suits were first introduced by foreigners, many of whom had red hair and blue eyes, people used the Chinese characters “hong” meaning red and “bang” meaning the group to describe the needlework craftsmen. The first generation of Hongbang tailors started in Ningbo and further developed in Shanghai. They founded the first garment school in modern China and eventually spread their skills worldwide.

And the following questions can be covered when the teacher prompts students to speak more in English.1. What’s your name? Where are you from?2. What’s your major?I major in/My major is accounting.3. Why did you choose this college?4. What’s your deepest impression upon our college and our teachers in the college?5. What’s your hobby? What do you usually do after class?6. What’s your favorite color, book, course and etc and ask them why.7. How do you pay for your tuition fees? By your parents or yourself?8. Do you think English is very difficult to learn well? If so, what do you think is the most difficult when learning English?Third, ask the students some questions about their summer holiday to get acquainted with the students.1. What have you done during the summer holiday?2. Have you ever read any book or seen any intriguing film? And can you tell us the main idea of the book or the film?3. Have you had a part-time job in your holiday? And do you want to share your working experience with us, if you did very well? This helps them to develop their communication skills and helps them get comfortable with speaking and interacting with all the students in the class.Forth, introduce the aims and teaching procedures of the course for the students. And illustrate the makeup of the final grade and emphasize the discipline in the class and speech for each class. Finally, tell students how to learn English well:Speak without FearThe biggest problem most people face in learning a new language is their own fear. They worry that they won’t say things correctly or that they will look stupid so they don’t talk at all. Don’t do this. The fastest way to learn anything is to do it – again and again until you get it right. Like anything, learning English re quires practice. Don’t let a little fear stop you from getting what you want.Use all of your ResourcesEven if you study English at a language school it doesn’t mean you can’t learn outside of class. Using as many different sources, methods and tools as possible, will allow you to learn faster. There are many different ways you can improve your English, so don’t limit yourself to only one or two. The internet is a fantastic resource for virtually anything, but for the language learner it's perfect.Surround Yourself with EnglishThe absolute best way to learn English is to surround yourself with it. Take notes in English, put English books around your room, listen to English language radio broadcasts, watch English news, movies and television. Speak English with your friends whenever you can. The more English material that you have around you, the faster you will learn and the more likely it is that you will begin “thinking in English.”Listen to Native Speakers as Much as PossibleThere are some good English teachers that have had to learn English as a second language before they could teach it. However, there are several reasons why many of the best schools prefer to hire native English speakers. One of the reasons is that native speakers have a natural flow to their speech that students of English should try to imitate. Thecloser ESL / EFL students can get to this rhythm or flow, the more convincing and comfortable they will become. Watch English Films and TelevisionThis is not only a fun way to learn but it is also very effective. By watching English films (especially those with English subtitles) you can expand your vocabulary and hear the flow of speech from the actors. If you listen to the news you can also hear different accents.Listen to English MusicMusic can be a very effective method of learning English. In fact, it is often used as a way of improving comprehension. The best way to learn English is to get the lyrics (words) to the songs you are listening to and try to read them as the artist sings. There are several good internet sites where one can find the words for most songs. This way you can practice your listening and reading at the same time. And if you like to sing, fine.Study As Often As Possible!Only by studying things like grammar and vocabulary and doing exercises, can you really improve your knowledge of any language.Do Exercises and Take TestsMany people think that exercises and tests aren't much fun. However, by completing exercises and taking tests you can really improve your English. One of the best reasons for doing lots of exercises and tests is that they give you a benchmark to compare your future results with. Often, it is by comparing your score on a test you took yesterday with one you took a month or six months ago that you realize just how much you have learned. If you never test yourself, you will never know how much you are progressing. Start now by doing some of the many exercises and tests on this site, and return in a few days to see what you've learned. Keep doing this and you really will make some progress with English.Record YourselfNobody likes to hear their own voice on tape but like tests, it is good to compare your tapes from time to time. You may be so impressed with the progress you are making that you may not mind the sound of your voice as much.教案头Unit 1 Hello, Hi!SectionⅠTalking Face to FaceI.Imitating Mini-talks1. pair worka. Families may be monogamous or polygamous – there are s3ystems where one man is entitled to several wives and others where several husbands share one wife. A society may recognize primarily the small nuclear conjugal unit of husband and wife with their immediate descendants or it may institutionalize the large extended family linking several generations and emphasizing consanguinity more
than the conjugal bond. Residence after marriage may be matrilocal, patrilocal or neolocal; exchanges of goods and services between families at the time of marriage may be based on bride price, groom price or an equal exchange; endogamous or exogamous regulations may indicate who is and who is not eligible for marriage; the choice of a mate may be controlled by parents or it may be left in large measure to the young persons concerned. These are but a few of the many differences which characterize family structures in variant13 societies.

A curator of an architecture museum is presenting a show to a group of middle school students. The theme of the presentation is “Houses.” Read the presentation, and then work in small groups to make a poster for the modern equivalents to those in the show based on the internet research. Write a short text giving necessary information about the houses you choose.
(Pictures of tepees) Houses for buffalo hunters…
4 Not all Native Americans (used to be called American Indians) live in tents (or tepees as they call them). Only those Indian nations that hunted and followed the wild buffalo herds built themselves tepees with long wooden poles and leather skins, which were left over after the hunters had eaten all the buffalo meat or dried it for food in the winter months. Tepees have a small hole at the very top where the smoke can flow out — like igloos. The tents are so light that they can be transported on horseback without any problem.

Questions for discussion Give your views on the following questions.
1. What makes a happy family? Why do all happy families resemble one another?
Q: Is your family a happy one? I think my family is a happy family, but a crazy family. I think, eh, that in general I’m always struggling to teach my children that happiness is not material; I think that is an important thing. And I think I remind them constantly that Father comes home every night, which doesn’t happen with lots of my friends,
?
Questions for discussion 1. Do you agree with Megan’s idea of a happy family? Why? 2. What is life like for a lower middle working class family in the US?
Q: What is a happy family? I think a happy family is the family that stays together, which in this country is pretty hard to establish because there is no extended family. People don’t reach out to their cousins, brothers, and grandparents. The culture here has really separated those family members. So for me, a happy family is having all the extended family around and being together, I would say. And I don’t think it’s very common here.
parents. Yeah, I am very happy because I have everything I want. I think my kids have everything they want. But they have to be reminded that they are very lucky. Q: What is the most important thing for you and your family? For me absolutely they are together. My kids are well educated. My kids are decent people. They turn out to be decent adults. I would say that’s it. That’s all I want. Q: What would you say about American families in general? I would say American family is disintegrating. And I think you can break it down into very different categories. For example, the typical lower middle class families, both parents are working. They are working very hard. They are making 30,000 dollars a year if they are lucky together. The parents are working double shifts, which makes me very sad because

But it doesn’t work that way. And then I see what happens to parents like me. I am very lucky. I don’t have to work. I can give my kids all the time in the world. I drive them everywhere and I pick them up. They come home to someone who is here. That’s luxurious. That’s not a typical family in America. So you know, I wish it worked for everybody. Q: What is the future change of the American family? Interestingly, I think, after Sept 11, people are really reassessing how they feel. And I noticed that a lot of people
Another interesting change, retailing industry in the US obviously caved in after Sept 11. But one store that had increasing sales was a home store for cooking because Americans don’t even cook any more. You know they buy everything frozen. They buy everything pre-made or they eat pizza. We had a couple for d inner one night with their son. And the father joked to the son “Isn’t it nice to use knife and fork?” meaning they eat pizza every night. So I was so interested in the fact that the store had increased sales, which
means parents are going home and cooking soups and doing things that are soothing. And the number one book sold in that store was the soup recipe book, which was interesting too, because it has the connotation of something warm and nurturing and nutritious, which I thought was amazing. I think the trend will improve if we remember what we are going to do, if we want to keep our values intact.
that I know, saying “No … we’re not going out tonight. We’re going to stay home with kids.” And I think that’s something good after the Sept 11. I have noticed a tremendous change in the way people are sharing time with their children. I think that’s very important.
