Analogy

•DEFINITION: a comparison of similar ideas, often used to explain a complex situation by showing how it is like a simple one.

•Analogies can be separated into two parts

•Target –the unknown idea or object; we’re trying to explain it, or at least make it clear

•Source –the familiar idea or object; we use sources to shed light on the more complicated target

•Being a student is like being a sponge. The less you know the more you can soak up.

•Employees are like nails. You have to hit them on the head to get them to work.

•It’s with our judgments as with our watches; none go just alike, yet each believes his own.

•An individual human existence should be like a river—small at first, narrowly contained within its bank, and rushing passionately past boulders and over waterfalls. Gradually the river grows wider, the banks recede, the waters flow more quietly, and in the end, without any visible break, they become merged in the sea, and painlessly lose their individual being.

•Before you reprehend another, take heed you are not culpable in what you go about to reprehend. He who wipes a blot with blotted fingers makes a greater blur.

•Intellect assimilation takes time. The mind is not to be enriched as a coal barge is loaded. Whatever is precious in a cargo is carefully on board and carefully placed.

Whatever is delicate and fine must be received delicately, and its place in the mind thoughtfully assigned.

•Arlo Bates

•In rivers the water that you touch is the last of that has passed and the first of that which comes: so with time present.

•Leonardo Da Vinci

•The cultivation of a hobby and new forms of interest is….not a business that can be undertaken in a day or swiftly improved by a mere command of the will. The growth of alternative mental interests is a long process. The seeds must be carefully chosen;

they must fall on good ground; they must be sedulously tended, if the vivifying fruits are to be at hand wh en needed….

•Winston Churchill
