Being the dominantmedium of the second half of the 20th century, television serves as the center of a multifaceted media industry.Ever since its invention in the late 1940s, television has quickly taken over radio and newspaper in news transmission. Television news programs are contributing importantly to public knowledge and they offer viewers instant access to the current events both home and abroad. The technology of television, adding pictures to sound bites, verily transformed people‘s pattern for receiving news.Unlike newspaper stories which are written for the eye, TV news is written for the ear as well as for the eye. It has to match perfectly the pictures shot by the cameraman. TV news thus bears many distinctive structural, lexical and grammatical features of its own.What‘s more, the presentation of TV news deserves great attention. The announcer, who is to present the news to the viewers, functions just like a bridge linking the reporter and the viewer together. He or she should have the reporter‘s story faithfully reflected in the viewer‘s mind through the most pervasive and readily understood form of presentation.Concerning the process of news making, there are mainly four procedures involved: news collecting, camera shooting, news writing and news presentation. Having got the experience of English news announcing in a local TV station, the author familiarizes herself more with the writing and presentation of English TV news and would then shed more light on enhancing the effect of these two procedures in the thesis.In terms of the methodology, mainly three approaches are employed in this thesis. The qualitative and interpretive approach is the one widely used with illustrative examples or source of data. The analysis of the skillsadopted in news writing and presentation based on the author‘s experience is another approach. Meanwhile the author quotes some of the research findings achieved by the previous experts in this field.Part TwoChapter 1: Introduction1.1 An introduction to news1.1.1 The definition of newsAs TV news is a subcategory of news, it is of great importance for the author to present to the readers the definition of news above all. According to Oxford Advanced Learner‘s English—Chinese Dictionary, news is defined as ―New or fresh information or report(s) of recent events.‖(Hornby A S, 1989: 989) However, in the eyes of journalists and reporters, news can be defined in many other ways. It could be ―the first rough draft of history‖, ―the reports of what is happening and what has happened‖, ‖the immediate, the important, the things that have impact on our lives‖, or ―anything that makes a reader say, ‗Gee Whiz!‘ ―. (Boyd, A., 2001:18) Among all the given definitions, the author agrees more with M. Lyle Spencer‘s point of view. In his eyes, ―News is any event, idea or opinion that is timely, that interests or affects a large number of people in a community, and that is capable of being understood by them‖. (Hohenberg, 1969)1.1.2 Different categories of newsNews has many categories. According to different criteria, there are different ways to classify news.As per different media vehicles, there are newspaper coverage, magazine coverage, radio news, TV news, cable news, dispatches and newly popular cyber news.As per different places where news happened, there are world news, home news or national news, and local news.As per the contents of the coverage, there are ten major categories: political news, economic news, technological news, cultural news, sports news, violence and crime news, disaster news, weather news, obituaries, entertainment and miscellanies.As per the nature of news, traditionally news is divided into two broad categories –hard news and soft news. Hard news is new and important information about events of significance. Soft news and human-interest items are stories run for their entertainment value first and their information second.Although so many different criteria join the classification of news, news must be represented in a certain genre by the reporter. There are three commonly seen genres: news, features and commentaries, and columns.1.2 An introduction to TV news1.2.1 The appearance of televisionIn the June 1907 issue of Scientific American, the word ―television‖ first appeared. Before then, experiments in image transmission had been called ―visual wireless‖, ―visual radio‖ and ―electric vision‖. The first major technological discovery to suggest that pictures could also travel was the ―Nipkow Disk‖. 24-year-old Paul Nipkow patented his ―electrical telescope‖ in Germany in 1884. This disk formed the basis for television‘s development through the 1920s. In the 1920s and 1930s, television developed technologically in a series of steps. In 1922, 21-year-old Philo Farnsworth, allegedly by pondering the rows in the plowed fields of his native Idaho, came up with the idea of an ―image dissector‖, sc anning an image in a series of lines. Working with a group of engineers, Vladimir Zworykin invented the iconoscope tube in 1923. Both of these pioneers had come up with the essentialtechnology for a television camera—an electronic scanning system. Another independent inventor, Allen Dumont, had developed the essential technology for a receiver picture tube.Also crucial in television‘s development were Guglielmo Marconi and Lee de Forest. Marconi eliminated sound‘s dependence on wires and put sound on airwaves. De Forest contributed the Audion tube, which amplified radio waves so that people could hear the sound clearly.Based on the technologies mentioned above, television arrived on the scene in the late 1940s and became a household staple faster than any other home appliance had done previously.Take the USA as an example. In 1950, only 9 percent of U.S. homes owned television sets. However, by 1960, almost 90% of American households had television sets. The number of TVs in the last three decades has been increasing at a surprising speed. It is estimated that there are about 800 million television sets in use worldwide, making television a central part of people‘s life.1.2.2 The development of TV newsThe word ―television‖, which once meant pro grams delivered by antennas through over-the-air signals, now means a television screen, where a variety of delivery systems bring viewers a diversity of programs.Although TV has been blamed for everything from declines in literacy to rises in violent crime, every once in a while it is praised, too, for giving viewers instant access to world events and uniting audiences in times of national crisis. Television can bring its viewers to a gallery they might never visit, or to a baseball game they cannot attend or closer to the solar system than they couldsee through a telescope. The technology of television, adding pictures to the sounds of radio, has verily transformed people‘s living and learning patterns.Even the biggest best sellers reach only a fraction of the audience that will watch a similar program on television. For instance, it took 40 years for Gone With the Wind to sell 21 million copies. However, 55 million people watched the first half of the movie on television in a single evening!During the 1930s, several companies around the world were actively preparing to introduce television to the public. As early as 1935, the BBC initiated experimental television broadcasts in London for several hours each day. Since TV adds instant images to the coverage of events, TV broadcasting soon enjoyed popularity.Ever since its invention in the late 1940s, television has quickly taken over radio and newspaper in news transmission. In 1949, the year began with radio drawing 81 percent of all broadcast a udiences. By the year‘s end, television had grabbed 41 percent of the broadcast market.When the audiences began experiencing the thrill of actually seeing as well as hearing events as they occurred, the superiority of television was established beyond doubt. Besides, television can deliver the news to a larger audience faster than any other media. It then becomes the focus for people to acquire news. For many people, someone or something that does not appear on television does not fully exist in the social sense. The Watergate scandal became ―real‖ not when the Washington Post reported the stories but when network television news reported that the Washington Post reported the stories. Similarly, civil rights and anti-Vietnam War protests became social realities not when demonstrators took to the streets but when the protests were viewed on television.1.2.3 The categories of TV newsIn order to cater for the needs of the audiences, different categories of news are explored and presented on the TV screen. TV programs share great resemblance with other media. They include world news, regional news, local news, sports news, weather news, entertainment news, business news, and news programs from around the world. However, there are several types of news programs which are unique to the television, the length of which varies from 2-minute headline summaries to 24 hours of non-stop news. They include bulletin, news program, documentary, and 24-hour news.1.2.3.1 BulletinThe bulletin is a snapshot of the day‘s news at a point in time and is usually on air from three to five minutes. Individual items are kept deliberately short – at around 30 seconds –so a good number of stories can be packed in. TV bulletins are illustrated with video clips and stills. Only shorter headline summaries are usually read straight through without illustration.1.2.3.2 News programA news program aims to provide a broader view of the day‘s news, summarizing the best stories of the day instead of the hour. Its length usually ranges from 20 to 60 minutes. Items are generally longer and more detailed than those in a bulletin and have more sophisticated stills and graphics. Some shorter stories may also be incorporated to increase the breadth of coverage. If a program is to gain audience loyalty, it will have to establish a clear identity and have a greater balance and variety of material than a bulletin.1.2.3.3 DocumentaryThe documentary deals with a topical issue or subject in greater depth. Some immediate and newsworthy occurrences should have taken place before thetopical subject is aired. Documentaries usually last between 20 minutes and an hour and will cover a single theme or a small number of issues.Documentary styles vary from straightforward reportage to dramatized documentary. Events and conversations are reconstructed in the dramatized documentary. The use of reconstruction inevitably requires a degree of speculation and is a further mix of the margins between fact and fiction, producing what is sometimes referred to as faction.1.2.3.4 24-hour newsPerhaps the ultimate news program is the 24-hour news channel on satellite and cable TV. Ted Turner‘s Cable News Network (CNN) was the first in 1980. CNN International pumps out round-the-clock news via 15 satellites into 200 million households in more than 210 countries. Besides CNN, BBC World and the British-based Sky TV News also provide 24-hours pan-Europe coverage.Having been the English news announcer for the local television station for more than a year, the author familiarizes herself more with the first two categories of TV news and will therefore give her focus on these two news categories in the following chapters.Chapter 2: Main procedures of TV news makingGenerally speaking，there are four main procedures involved in TV news making. They are news collecting, news camera shooting, news writing, and news presentation.2.1 News collectingThe success of a program depends greatly on the producer‘s news sense, his or her ability to select the stories and the skill in assembling those items into a popular program.The producer‘s first task is to match the coverage to the style and length of the program. A two-minute headline summary may cover the current top stories, providing a sketched outline of events. A half-hour program may go over substantially the same ground, but in more depth. Researchers have found a surprising unanimity about what news gatherers regard as news.Immediacy, proximity, conflict, novelty and interest are all the factors which go into the complex equation of news selection.Immediacy.News is about what is happening now, or the first inkling of something that happened earlier but was hushed up. To the broadcast journalist, news must be timely. There has to be something new to say or with some fresh angle. And with hourly headlines, even what went on at 11:00 will have to be updated for noon. To put it another way: news is only news while it is new.ProximityAn event will be more important if it is closer to readers or audiences. An earthquake in a far-off land is not as interesting as one that is close to home. Dramatic events always have striking effects.NoveltyThis is the unusual part to seize the attention from readers or audiences. The ―firsts‖, ―lasts‖ and ―onlys‖ have been the staples of the news business for many years. Out-of-the-ordinary events, a bizarre or rare occurrence, or people engaged in unusual activities are considered newsworthy.InterestNews should not only be something people need to know, but something they want to know. Many journalists believe that news should make people suck in their breath, exclaim and take notice. Hence news should be made to cater for the mass interest.When selecting a piece of news, the editor always sheds much light on the aforementioned elements that help determine whether an event is newsworthy.2.2 News Camera shootingHaving decided what to be reported, news editors should then move onto the next procedure, which is to have the relevant pictures shot by the cameramen.As is known to all, television is different from other media. The ―picture‖ is paramount. It is believed by most TV editors that a good news program is to ―show‖ what is happening, but not to ―tell‖ ab out what is going on. The picture tells part of the story, while the words are to explain or reinforce the picture or to tell the audience what the picture does not show. Therefore, the categoryand quality of visual materials available for a given story frequently determine the length and position the news producer will allot to it.In the process of TV news making, camera shooting serves as an essential part. In order to ensure that the pictures are also newsworthy, it is the usual practice that the cameramen always follow the reporter to the news front, where pictures are to be shot to illustrate the news and attract the viewer‘s attention. If the reporter cannot go with the cameramen, he or she should then explain to them what the story is about and what effect they are expected to achieve. In order to facilitate audience‘s comprehension, it is oft en endowed with features common to spoken language and is always written in an informal and conversational style. The writing of TV news requires a special combination of the characteristics of news reporting with that of oral English.Besides, TV news should be geared to video. Different from other news media, TV presents sound bites and motion pictures, which help illustrate the story. Hence TV news writers always exert great efforts to match their story to the pictures shot by the cameraman. Some reporters like to run the first and last scenes of their reports a little longer so as to imprint the pictures on the viewer‘s mind and leave an impression thereafter. For TV news reporters, to explain word for word what is obvious from the pictures would be wasteful as well as pointless. There are times when pictures should be left to speak for themselves. The reporter‘s script should never repeat what the viewer can clearly see, but should clarify, contextualize and explain what is shown on the screen.2.4 News presentationInformation + Presentation = Communication (Boyd, A., 2001:174) Successful communication is largely a matter of presentation. Having acquired the pictures shot by the cameramen and the script written by the reporter, the news announcer is then on the way for news presentation. However, before the news is on the air, there are usually several procedures to go through for the news announcer.2.4.1 A read-through of the scriptThe news script will usually be delivered to the announcer well before the presentation. The announcer should then spend as much time as possible on the script reading so as to be thoroughly familiar with the material and theintention of the news writer.While reading the script, announcers should first strive to obtain its overall meaning before concentrating too much on pronunciation or timing.As John Touhey, BBC World Service newsreader, put it, ―The essence is to completely understand what you‘re reading before you open your mouth. Hence a read-through of the script serves to be a must.2.4.2 Interpretation of the scriptWith the general impression in mind, the announcer should then decide how to interpret the script, which is also a demanding job to fulfill. The usual practice for this is to resort to the specific purpose of the script. Just as it is pointless to begin a trip to some undetermined destination, an interpretation with no guidance from the intention of the news writer is languid and meaningless.Two identical sentences from various contexts may actually require quite different interpretations. Should the place in the report suffered from a drought, the sentence ―…It has kept raining for 3 days…‖ would naturally be delivered with joy. However, it would be the other way round if people there had been enduring a flood already.The interpretation of the script not only involves the selection of an appropriate delivery means, but also a grasp of both the pronunciation and connotation of every word. Announcers should therefore cultivate the habit of looking up in an authoritative dictionary all the unfamiliar words so as to ensure a correctunderstanding.After enough preparation of the script reading and interpretation is done, the announcer will then dress up and appear in the studio for news presentation.Chapter 3: TV news writingSince TV is a combination of pictures and sound, the news must be written for both ear and eye. In short, the lead reveals the most valuable information in the fewest words and shoulders the task of attracting readers or audience. So, to some extent, it is the choicest part of the story and the show-window of reporters‘ writing talent.Most reporters agree that a good lead must be:Succinct. The lead is supposed to express the core or the most important part of the story in the fewest words, so it must be succinct as far as possible.Informative. The lead must reveal the essence of the story. An empty lead is always the reporter‘s taboo.Intriguing. The lead, as the term suggests, serves to lead readers or audience to follow the story. Sometimes it is called a grabber, which aims to grab people‘s attention as much as possible. Reporters should therefore explore themselves deeply for writing an interesting and fresh lead.The lead of TV news is no exception to the aforementioned features. Besides, it bears some other features of its own. Here below are some common lead styles for the television news.3.1.1.1 Main point leadA main point lead usually wraps up the main elements of the news, like ―who‖, ―when‖, ―where‖, ―what‖, ―why‖, ―how‖, etc. The purpose of such a lead is to inform the audience of the news focus and grab their attention from the very start.
