“原因”表达法种种

英语中表示“原因”的方法较多,常见的有以下几种:

1. because表示直接原因,语气最强,常用于回答why引导的特殊疑问句。because引导的从句大多后置,有时也可前置。如:

The swimming pool won’t be open today because they’re making repairs. 游泳池今天不开放,因为他们在检修。

Because I was ill, I didn’t go to the meeting. 因为生病,

所以我没有去开会。

―Why can’t you do it now? 你为什么现在不能做这件事?

―Because I am too busy. 因为我太忙。

2. as多用来解释主句的原因,语气比because弱,多用于日常会话。as引导的从句大多前置,有时也可后置。如: As you’re not ready yet, we will wait. 由于你还没有准备好,我们就等等吧。

I must stop writing now, as I have a lot of work to do. 我现在得停笔了,因为我有很多工作要做。

3. since表示上下文中已经表述得很清楚的或不言自明

的原因,语气比because弱,但比as强。since引导的从句多前

置。如:

Since you have finished your work, let’s go now. 既然你

把工作干完了,咱们现在就走吧。

Since you can’t answer these questions, we’d better ask someone else. 既然你不能回答这些问题,我们最好还是问问

别人。

4. for为并列连词,表示附加的推测出或判断出的理由,语气比as弱。for很少用于口语中,所以连接的分句只能后置,

表示补充的原因。如:

He must be ill, for he is absent from class today. 他一定是

病了,因为他今天没来上课。

It is spring now, for the flowers are out. 春天来了,百花开了。

He must be honest, for he is loved by all. 他一定很诚实,

因为他受到众人的爱戴。

5. because of常用于口语中,重在说明某个结果的“原因”。because of后可接名词、代词、动名词或what从句。如: She arrived late because of the heavy traffic. (= She arrived late because the traffic was heavy. 因为交通堵塞,她来晚了。

He is here because of you. 他是因为你才来这里的。

The girl felt a little tired because of staying up last night.

因为昨天晚上熬夜,这个女孩觉得有点累。

She became very angry because of what he said. 她因为他说的话变得很生气。

6. thanks to意为“幸亏;由于”,后面可接人称代词或名词,构成介词短语,在句中作状语。thanks to有时还可用于强调句型或引导状语从句。如:

Thanks to your help, we were successful. 多亏你的帮助,我们成功了。

It was thanks to your stupidity that we lost the game. 正是由于你的愚蠢,我们比赛才输了。
