The reason and goal
Because of the economic and political troubles in China, most people intended to work hard and make a lot of money. In 1849,there appeared the Gold Rush in California. Therefore, a number of Chinese went to America to seek fortunes.

Discrimination

Rhetorical Device
Alliteration: the occurrence of the same letter or sound at the beginning of adjacent or closely connected words. It can help to convey a sort of melodious quality, thus making those words sound more pleasing and impressive.
