“建筑奇才”——螺螺是一位单身住宅建筑家，螺壳就是它精心设计的单身住房。
①我们知道，其他建筑师盖的房子都是固定在一个地方不能随意搬动的，但螺的住房不同，它既小又轻，负在房主人背上可以四处移动，十分方便。
因此，螺不必为回家的问题而操心。

有些螺长得圆溜溜的，看上去跟皮球或鸡蛋差不多。
螺壳的构造非常考究，分内、中、外三层。
中层最厚，用方解石筑成；外层用薄薄的、比较粗糙的彩色角质层作壳面，并常常饰以花纹；内层也很薄，用文石做成，被“加工”得特别光洁，因为这层壳紧挨着主人柔软、稚嫩的肉体。
螺壳的薄厚和坚固程度是根据所处的自然环境来进行“设计”和“施工”的，在多石的水底，为避免磨损，壳就长得很厚实；有些螺是过漂浮生活的，这类螺的壳长得非常薄而轻巧；在多淤泥的水底，螺怕陷到泥里爬不出来，所以壳口和壳体长出许多刺，这样就万无一失了有些螺还在足的后端长着一个角质或钙质的壳盖，这是当门用的，螺遇到不速之客侵扰时，立刻缩回身体，关起大门，给来客吃闭门羹。
螺的坚固、美观、轻便的单身住房，深受海中的“单身汉”——寄居蟹的喜爱。
螺死后，它的“房产”常常被不会盖房的寄居蟹占有。
地球上螺类分布得很广泛，海洋、湖泊、河流、田间、高山、沙漠均能找到螺类动物的踪迹，在一些严酷的自然环境里，大多数动物都无法在其中生存，但某些种类的螺却能照常在那儿过日子。
螺类动物之所以能浪迹天涯，四海为家，显然是跟它们惊人的适应各种生活环境的能力分不开的。
而这种能耐又与它们奇妙的螺壳有关。
螺壳能御寒，能防热，还能避敌害，同时又能背着到处走，实在是一件建筑杰作。
