Unit 8 The Deadliest of the Sins

Twelve years at school and three years at university, teachers banging on about opportunities in the big wide world beyond our sheltered life as students, and what do I find? Try as I might to stay cheerful, all I ever get is hassle, sometimes with people (especially boys, god, when will they grow up?), but mostly with money. It's just so expensive out here! Everyone wants a slice off you. The Inland Revenue wants to deduct income tax, the bank manager wants repayments on my student loan, the landlord wants the rent, gas, water, electricity and my mobile bills keep coming in, and all that's before I've had anything to eat. And then some bright spark calls me out of the blue, asking if I'm interested in buying a pension. At this rate, I won't even last till the end of the year, letalone till I'm 60.

新视野⼤学英语4:Unit4 TextA(课⽂+译⽂) 1.Environmental sensitivity is now as required an attitude in polite society as is, say, belief in democracy or disapproval of plastic surgery. But now that everyone from Ted Turner to George H. W. Bush has claimed love for Mother Earth, how are we to choose among the dozens of conflicting proposals, regulations and laws advanced by congressmen and constituents alike in the name of the environment? Clearly, not everything with an environmental claim is worth doing. How do we segregate the best options and consolidate our varying interests into a single, sound policy? 1.

BThe e-mail was in some respects similarto other nasty letters I receive. It took me to task for my comments on the Los Angeles Dodgers and argued that I had got everything wrong. However, the note was different from the others in at least two ways. This note contained more details than the usual “You’re an idiot.” It included vital statistics on the team’s performance. It was written by someone who knew the Los Angeles Dodgers as well as I thought I did.And this note was signed. The writer’s name was Sarah Morris.

The old green typewriter sits in my office now, unrepaired. It is a memento, but what it recalls for me is not quite what it recalled for Mother. When I’m having trouble with a story and think about giving up or when I start to feel sorry for myself and think things should be easier for me ,I roll a piece of paper into that cranky old machineand type ,word by painful word, just the way mother did .What I remember then is not her failure, but her courage ,the courage to go ahead. It’s the be st memento anyone ever gave me.

Unit 1 The Tail of Fame.Fame, just as property, has attracted the attention of so many individuals, and they are so absorbed in it, that they aren't aware of the physical tiredness. Following fame provides people with faith as well as destruction. On the one hand, the desire to fame gives people the courage to make a full use of time, helps them live better. For instance, without the target for fame, Michael Jackson couldn't grow into a superstar. The desire to fame will always lead people to achieve their dreams. On the other hand, people can also be misled during following the fame. Many artists lose themselves in order to entertain the public. In the end, these tails will come to destruction even though they may manage to gain fame. On my perspective, it's not wrong to follow the fame, if only we can follow our heart. Only by doing in this way, can we not only get fame, but live better and happier.

Unit 9 (Book 1)There was great excitement on the planet of Venus this week. For the first time Venusian scientists managed to land a satellite on the planet Earth, and it has been sending back signals as well as photographs ever since. The satellite was directed into an area known as Manhattan (named after the great Venusian astronomer Prof. Manhattan, who first discovered it with his telescope 20,000 light years ago).Because of excellent weather conditions and extremely strong signals, Venusian scientists were able to get valuable information as to the feasibility of a manned flying saucer landing on earth. A press conference was held at the Venus Institute of Technology.

Unit10(Book 1)Then Brunswick was 10 miles, and then five. Then, suddenly, all of the young people were up out of their seats, screaming and shouting and crying, doing small dances of joy. All except Vingo.Vingo sat there stunned, looking at the oak tree. It was covered with yellow handkerchiefs --- 20 of them, 30 of them, maybe hundreds, a tree that stood like a banner of welcome billowing in the wind. As the young people shouted, the old con slowly rose from his seat and made his way to the front of the bus to go home.

The American does not join in the argument but watches the other guests. As he looks, he sees a strange expression come over the face of the hostess. She is staring straight ahead, her muscles contracting slightly. She motions to the native boy standing behind her chair and whispers something to him. The boy’s eyes widen: he quickly leaves the room.Of the guests, none except the American notices this or sees the boy place a bowl of milk on the veranda just outside the open doors. The American comes to with a start. In India, milk in a bowl means only one thing --- bait for a snake. He realizes there must be a cobra in the room.

Unit2(Book2)Jefferson’s courage and idealism were based on knowledge. He probably knew more than any other man of his age. He was an expert in agriculture, archeology, and medicine. He practiced crop rotation and soil conservation a century before these became standard practice, and he invented a plow superior to any other in existence. He influenced architecture throughout America, and he was constantly producing devices for making the tasks of ordinary life easier to perform.Of all Jefferson’s many talents, one is central. He was above all a good and tireless writer. His complete works, now being published for the first time, will fill more than fifty volumes. His talent as an author was soon discovered and when the time came to write the Declaration of Independence at Philadelphia in 1776, the task of writing it was his. Millions have thrilled to his words: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal …”

数以百万计的人们读到他写的下列词句都激动不已:“我们认为这些真理是不言而喻的:一切人生来就是平等的……”While I was waiting to enter university, I saw advertised in a local newspaper a teaching post at a school in a suburb of London about ten miles from where I lived. Being very short of money and wanting to do something useful, I applied, fearing as I did so, that without a degree and with no experience in teaching my chances of getting the job were slim. However, three days later a letter arrived, asking me to go to Croydon for an interview. It proved an awkward journey: a train to Croydon station; a ten-minute bus ride and then a walk of at least a quarter of a mile. As a result I arrived on a hot June morning too depressed to feel nervous.
