Writing Practice
Direction: The annual conference Open Forum on World Economy was held in Davos on Jan.21-25, 2004. Its theme of this year is “Globalization or delglobalization: what is best for the world’s poor?” Write a short composition of about 200 words, commenting on the theme. You should try to use as many words and expressions you have just learned in the essay as possible. Don’t forget to give a title to your writing.
With China’s successful entry into the WTO, state-owned banks are faced with more and more pressure. The big bank intends to merge with two small banks so as to quickly solve the problem of capital insufficiency and enlarge its scale.
2. The economic forces behind globalization include rising trade and investment flows, greater labor mobility, and rapid transfers of technology. Those trends have been spurred by the deregulation of financial markets, reductions in trade barriers, and lower communication costs.

The deregulation of financial markets taken by government is very helpful to economical globalization, but, at the same time, it brings some unpleasant influences on domestic economy.

1.Globalization is steadily and inexorably knitting separate national economies into a single world economy. Basic economic forces so far have outweighed political efforts to slow this trend. Efforts to buck the effects of economic integration have ranged from ant-globalization protests to Congressional efforts to prevent American companies from reincorporating abroad.
Web-based training and learning seems to be a perfect way to reach a huge pool of potential students, as well as curtail the high infrastructure and personnel costs of traditional schooling.
Because of the recessionary effect on global economy and inflation, many small businesses in this city have gone bankrupt or have been swallowed up by giant corporations. It leads to a large number of workers facing unemployment.

3.Most economists support globalization because it raises the incomes of people worldwide. Another lesser-noticed benefit is that it makes it harder for governments to sustain excessively high tax rates. When economic integration increases, individuals and businesses gain the freedom to take advantage of low tax rates abroad. As a result, countries with high tax rates face large economic losses when borders are opened because people and capital flow out. As capital and labor become more mobile, international “tax competition” increases.
