Outlaws of the Marsh As the first novel and one classical masterpiece in the history of Chinese literature, Outlaws of the Marsh has drawn material from a real peasant uprising in the 12th century, at the end of the Northern Song Dynasty. It is a Chinese novel attributed to Shi Nai'an. The story tells of how a group of 108 outlaws gather at Mount Liang (or Liangshan Marsh) to form a sizable army before they are eventually granted amnesty by the government and sent on campaigns to resist foreign invaders and suppress rebel forces.

A Dream of Red Mansions is a masterpiece of Chinese vernacular [vəˈnækjələ(r)] 白话的literature. The novel was written approximately between 1749 and 1759 during the Qing Dynasty. The first 80 chapters of the book were written by Cao Xueqin and the last 40 were added by Gao E after Cao's death. The novel provides a detailed, episodic record of life in the two branches of the wealthy, aristocratic Jia (賈) clan—the Rongguo Houseand the Ningguo House —who reside in two large, adjacent family compounds in the capital.

Journey to the West is a Chinese novel published in the 16th century during the Ming dynasty and attributed to Wu Cheng'en. The novel is an extended account of the legendary pilgrimage of the Tang dynasty Buddhist monk Xuanzang who traveled to the "Western Regions", that is, Central Asia and India, to obtain Buddhist sacred texts (sūtras) and returned after many trials and much suffering with three protectors.
