摘要：语言是反映社会生活的一面镜子，而作为语言最敏感、最活跃因素的词汇，则是观察社会生活变化的一个窗口。
随着我国对外交往的日益频繁，来自英语的外来词（借词）日益增多，特别是在中国进行改革开放的新时期，中外文化的多层次、多渠道的交流为词语的借用提供了多种条件。
正如美国著名的语言学家萨丕尔所言：“一种语言对另一种语言最简单的影响是词的‘借贷’。
只要有文化借贷，就可能把有关的词也借过来。
”因此，我们可以从借词中窥见文化交流的方方面面，并通过词语借用方式来发掘沉积在一个民族心理结构中的深层内蕴。
本论文分析了英语这门语言的发展史，包括外来词以何种方式引入到英语中，以及英语外来词的影响力和分类。

第二类次之;第三类数量小,影响不大。
第一类外来词:拉丁语词、希腊语词、法语词、斯堪地那维亚语词。
第二类外来词:除第一类外来词语言之外的印欧语系西支语言词汇,如意大利语词、荷兰语词、德语词、凯尔特语词、西班牙语词、葡萄牙语词等。
第三类外来词:印欧语系东支语言及世界各地语言词汇。
如俄语词、捷克语词、阿拉伯语词、印度语词、日语词、汉语词、印第安土著语词等。
第一类外来词的数量最大,约占所有英语外来词的80%以上。
第一类外来词有许多词都现已成为英语的基本词汇,词的音、形方面同化程度很高,一般人已无法辨认其外来词身份。
它们和英语词汇已经是水乳交融,不可分离。
在语言亲疏方面,第一类外来词语言和英语同属印欧语系西支,斯堪地纳维语言和英语同属印欧语系西支的日耳曼语族。
所以从总体看,第一类外来词语言和英语在语言亲疏关系上比较近,这符合关系越亲,影响越大的基本规律。
第二类外来词语言虽和英语同属印欧语系西支,特别是德语、荷兰语和英语同属日耳曼语族,但由于历史、地理、文化等方面的原因,这些外来词在数量上不如第一类外来词影响比之小。
第三类外来词由于在语言亲疏方面关系较为疏远,如俄语、捷克语等属于印欧语系东支,或根本没有亲属关系,如汉语、日语,汉语属汉藏语系,日语亲属关系不明,因此这些语言的外来词在英语词汇中的数量较小,对英语词汇的影响也不大。

目前，全世界有3.8亿人把英语作为第一语言，大约2.5亿人将其作为第二语言，另外还有10亿人正在学习它。
作为全球化语言，英语广泛地应用在国际商务、政治与外交领域中，同时也是计算机与互联网通用语言。
我国要建设现代化社会，就必须充分利用人类所创造一切文明成果，在经济、政治、科技等多方面加强与其他国家交流。
改革开放后，我国发展愿望空前强烈，在各个领域对外交流与合作空前活跃。
由于信息传播客观需要，吸收众多外来词成为我们信息交流必要选择。
2.发达现代媒介为外来词普及提供有利条件作为现代文明重要体现，现代媒介无论是对社会发展还是对社会生活都产生着巨大影响。
我国有数千家大大小小电台与电视台，有上万种报纸杂志，媒体人超前先锋意识及媒体强大信息复制功能与快速传输功能，为外来词普及起到推波助澜作用，一些新词语几乎在一夜之间就能流行起来。
3.追逐新奇时尚心理使特定人群对外来词乐此不疲时尚是一种社会文化，这种文化追逐离不开社会条件制约。
就英语外来词“蹿红”而言，使用者追求时尚心理起很大作用，但是这一时尚追逐与人们生活条件改善与受教育程度提高，特别是英语语言教育普及息息相关。
出于对新奇事物时尚追求，很多人将外来词语使用看做标新立异表现：“T恤衫”（T-shirt）成了一切套头衫时髦总称，“粉丝”（fans）成了“追星族”统称，就连一些党与国家领导人也愿意将“中国加入世贸”说成“中国加入WTO”。

一、外来词进入英语的历史和现状在历史的进程中，社会的进步、各民族间的交往和不同文化的传播为语言之间的相互渗透提供了条件和基础。
一般情况下，经济文化比较发达的民族的语言，对经济文化相对落后的民族的语言产生重大的影响，并进而渗入其语言体系，同样，武力征服也可造成外来词的进入。
外来词的进入可分为直接和间接两种。
直接进入是指一种语言的成分直接进入另一种语言中；而间接进入则是指一种语言的成分通过某种中介语言进入到另一种语言中。
如英语通过拉丁语引入希腊语oenomel、anonymus、apocrypha，通过法语引入阿拉伯语burnous、carafe，通过法语引入西班牙语castle，这些引入的外来语刚开始只在一定范围内或特定人群中使用，随着时间的推移，其中有些外来词被淘汰不再使用，而另外一部分外来词则渐渐融入新语言当中，成为其有机组成成分。
外来词大规模进入英语大概始于诺曼征服时期。
入侵者凭借自己强大的军事力量，建立起自己的王国，使法语成为统治阶级的语言，被征服的英国贵族也开始使用法语，法语逐渐成为大多数人的语言，从而加快了英语中外来词借入的步伐。
外来词的借入对中世纪晚期英语产生了很大的影响，甚至有些词取代了英语本族语中的某些词，极大地推进了英语的发展。

文章将从英语发展历史的角度分析外来词汇的发展，通过回顾英语外来词汇的发展过程，帮助更好地理解英语语言和促进英语学习。

罗马时期许多重要的中心地区都有名字，这些名字体现了盖尔的语言成分。
伦敦这词本身虽然来源不确定，但多数可能要追溯到盖尔语言时期。
古英语中，不是很多词都能够以合理的可能性追溯到盖尔之源的。
然而，许多盖尔词汇在英语语言中没有获得持久性的地位，其中一些很快消失，而另一些仅在本国货币中获得延续[2]。

从使用它的人口来说，以英语为母语的人数大约有四亿多人，仅次于汉语，居世界第二位；而以英语作为第二语言或者在一定程度上使用英语的人数，分布在世界的各个角落、各个民族。
古英语构成了英语词汇的核心，这些单词一直沿用至今；英语中外来词汇的融入，丰富了英语的词汇量和词义，对英语的发展起到了积极的'推动作用。
外来词汇的广泛运用使人们意识到了异域文化因素在英语使用中的重要价值，因此对于英语学习者来说，了解、掌握外来词汇对于提高英语水平至关重要。
二、英语词汇分类从词源学的角度讲英语词汇可分为本土词汇(native words) 和外来词汇 (borrowed words) 两类。
本土词汇形成于公元5世纪，由德国日耳曼民族带入不列颠岛，被称为央格鲁撒克逊词汇 (Anglo-Saxon words) 。
英语的本土词汇数量大约在50,000-60,000，在现代英语中约占词汇总量的20%，多为日常基本用语。
外来词汇是指借用其它国家的语言形成的英语词汇。
英语中的外来词汇在现代英语中占有相当大的比重，约占现代英语词汇总量的80%。
三、外来词汇的形成英语中的外来词汇在英国与不同国家、地区、文化的民族间不断进行的入侵征服、殖民统治、贸易往来和文化交流中形成。
如：公元11世纪中期英国王室发生了王位继承问题，此时占据法国西北部面临英吉利海峡的诺曼底地区（Normandy）公爵威廉(William)，于1066年强行进入英国，这就四、外来词汇的来源法语、拉丁语、希腊语、德语是英语中外来词汇的主要来源，但日常使用的英语词汇中还有很多来源于其它语种的国家。
以下举例说明不同时期英语中外来词汇的来源。

【摘要】作为一种接近于国际通用语言的英语,其显著特征之一,是它拥有世界上任何其他语言所不能比拟的、极其丰富的外来词。
这无数的外来词给英语增添了新鲜的血液,使英语在表达各种复杂事物与现象时,更加鲜明、确切,更具有修辞色彩。
权威学者曾估计,在英语约50万词的总词汇量中,外来词约占70％。
为何外来词在英语总词汇量中占如此大的比例?这只能从英语词源学的角度去探求答案。
