Nowadays, many of us try to live in a way that will damage the environment as little as possible. We recycle our newspapers and bottles, we take public transport to get to work, we try to buy locally produced fruit and vegetables, and we want to take these attitudes on holiday with us. This is why alternative forms of tourism are becoming popular in the world. There are a lot of names for these new forms of tourism: responsible tourism, nature tourism, adventure tourism, educational tourism and more.Although everyone may have a different definition, most people agree that these new forms of tourism should do the following: first, they should conserve the wildlife and culture of the area; second, they should benefit the local people; third, they should make a profit without destroying natural resources; and finally they should provide an experience that tourists want to pay for.2012专四听力参考答案说明:由于是一次性听力并作答,没有反复斟酌,不能保证答案百分百正确,但是能保证百分之九十以上正确。

1.Three passions, simple but overwhelmingly strong, have governed my life—the longing for love, the search for knowledge, and the unbearable pity for the suffering of mankind. These passions, like great winds, have blown me hither and thither in a wayward course, over a deep ocean of anguish, racing to the very verge of despair.I have sought love, first, because it brings ecstasy—ecstasy so great that I would often have sacrificed all the rest of living for a few hours of this joy. I have sought it, next, because it relieves loneliness—that terrible loneliness in which one shivering consciousness looks over the rim of the world into the cold unfathomable lifeless abyss. I have sought it, finally, because in the union of love I have seen, in a mystic miniature, the prefiguring vision of the heaven that saints and poets have imagined. This is what I sought, and though it might seem too good for human life, this is what, at last, I have found. With equal passion I have sought knowledge. I have wished to understand the hearts of men. I have wished to know why the stars shine. And I have tried to apprehend the Pythagorean power by which number holds sway above the flux. A little of this, but not much, I have achieved.Love and knowledge, so far as they were possible, led upward toward the heavens. But pity always brought me back to earth. Echoes of cries of pain reverberate my heart. Children in famine, victims tortured by oppressors, helpless old people a hated burden to their sons, and the whole world of loneliness, poverty, and pain make a mockery of what human life should be. I long to alleviate the evil, but I cannot, and I too suffer. This has been my life. I have found it worth living, and would gladly live it again if the chance were offered me.(40 points)正确答案:我的一生由三种单纯而极其强烈的情感支配着,对爱情的渴望,对知识的索求,以及对人类苦难难以遏制的同情。

At its heart, psycholinguistic work consists of two questions. One is, What knowledge of language is needed for us to use language? In a sense, we must know a language to use it, but we are not always fully aware of this knowledge. A distinction may be drawn between tacit knowledge and explicit knowledge. Tacit knowledge refers to the knowledge of how to perform various acts, whereas explicit knowledge refers to the knowledge of the processes or mechanisms used in these acts. We sometimes know how to do something without knowing how we do it. For instance, a baseball pitcher (投手) might know how to throw a baseball 90 miles an hour but might have little or no explicit knowledge of the muscle groups that are involved in this act. Similarly, we may distinguish between knowing how to speak and knowing what processes are involved in producing speech. Generally speaking, much of our linguistic knowledge is tacit rather than explicit.

我在今年冲刺班上反复强调的翻译必考的句⼦成分,尤其是后置定语,⽐如50题的strong co-dependencies between particular types of word-order relations,属于我冲刺班提到的必考的名词短语的现象,以及⼀些常⽤从句的翻译,⽐如49题的两个后置定语which are considered to represent biases that result from cognitive constraints.,属于翻译必考的从句。

47题的it seems reasonable to suppose that 句型;以及最难的48题从句特多,构成理解的障碍。

Since at least the days of Aristotle, a search for universal principles has characterized the scientific enterprise. In some ways, this quest for commonalities defines science: without it, there is no underlying order and pattern, merely as many explanations as there are things in the world. Newton's laws of motion, the oxygen theory of combustion and Darwinian evolution each bind a host of different phenomena into a single explicatory framework。

For each question, there are four suggested answers marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that you think is the best answer and mark your answers on ANSWER SHEET TWO.PASSAGE ONE(1) Saying “thank you” is probably the first thing most of us learn to do in a foreign language. After all, we’re brought up to be polite, and it is important to make a good impression upon other people—especially across national divides.(2) So, what exactly are you supposed to say when “thank you” is only the 20h most popular way to express gratitude? According to a recent survey, 19 other ways of expressing appreciation finished ahead of “thank you” in a poll of 3,000 people.(3) Pollsters found almost half of those asked preferred the more informal “cheers”, while others liked to use such expressions as “ta”, “great” and “nice one”.(4) So, just what is the appropriate form of words to express your thanks?(5) Fortunately, the clue is in the language itself. “Cheers”, despite its popularity, is considered an informal way to say thank you—and this is a definite clue as to when you can best use it.(6) For instance, when going for a drink with friends, a smile and a “cheers” by way of thanks is not only appropriate to the situation, it is also culturally accurate.(7) “Ta”, originated from the Danish word “tak”, was the second-most popular expression of thanks, and is also commonly used in informal situations, along with phrases such as “nice one”, and “brilliant”. Interestingly, one word that didn’t make it into the top 20 was “thanks”, thank you’s shorter, more informal cousin.(8) “Thanks” can be useful, as it is able to bridge the divide between the formality of “thank you”and the downright relaxed “cheers”.(9) Certain words can double as an expression of thanks as well as delight. Again, the wordsthemselves offer the clue as to when best to use them.(10) For example, words like “awesome”, “brilliant” and “you star” featured highly in the new poll and they can hint at both your pleasure at someone’s action, as well as serving to express your thanks. If you’re on the receiving end of a “new” thank you, you can respond with a simple “no problem”, or “sure”(11) Of course, in certain circumstances, a simple wave, nod or smile may be appropriate. For instance, if a car driver slows down to let you cross the road, simply raising your hand in acknowledgement is enough to show that you appreciate the driver’s consideration.(12) Sometimes, formality is necessary, and “thank you” is still the best choice in such situations. But students should not worry about when exactly to use certain expressions.(13) Many people in Western countries are worried that good manners are in decline. People are tired of seeing their acts of kindness and service pass without comment. So don’t think that your “thank you”was clumsy or awkwardly formal. The chances are, if you said “thank you”, you made someone’s day. Y ou star.41. W e can tell from the results of the poll that ____________.A. people are unconcerned about politeness nowadaysB. “thank you” remains the best expression of gratitudeC. there is a variety of expressions of appreciationD. there are more formal expressions than informal ones42. W hich word phrase does NOT appear in the top 20?A. Thanks.B. Cheers.C. Brilliant.D. Y ou star.43. A ccording to the passage, the way in which we express our gratitude depends on all the followingEXCEPT ____________.A. cultureB. genderC. formalityD. circumstance PASSAGE TWO(1) “I’m a little worried about my future,” said Dustin Hoffman in The Graduate. He should be so lucky. All he had to worry about was whether to have an affair with Mrs. Robinson. In the sixties, that was the sum total of post-graduation anxiety syndrome.(2) Hoffman’s modern counterparts are not so fortunate. The Mrs. Robinsons aren’t sitting around at home any more, seducing graduates. They are out in the workplace, doing the high-powered jobs the graduates want, but cannot get. For those fresh out of university, desperate for work but unable to get it, there is a big imbalance between supply and demand. And there is no narrowing of the gap in sight.(3) The latest unemployment figures show that 746,000 of 18-24 year-olds are unemployed—a record rate of 18 per cent. Many of those will have graduated this summer. They are not panicking yet, but as the job rejections mount up, they are beginning to feel alarmed.(4) Others—fewer in number, but now past the panic stage and plunged deeper and deeper into depression—graduated in summer 2008, nearly 18 months ago. I know one of them, the son of friends. He went to one of the country’s top grammar schools, got a place at Warwick University, worked hard, got a 2:1 in maths—maths, note, not something wishy-washy like media studies—and is still living at home with his parents, doing shift work at the local pub. The only maths he needs to know is the cost of a pint of bitter.(5) He would be a tragic figure, a one-man paradise lost, if his plight were not so common. Graduates struggling to get jobs commensurate with their qualifications are becoming sadly familiar.(6) Of course, it is easy to blame the Government and, in particular, the. target that Labour has longtrumpeted—50 per cent of school-leavers in higher education. That was not too smart. The Government has not only failed to meet its target—the actual figure is still closer to 40 per cent- -but it has raised expectations to unrealistic levels.(7) Parents feel as badly let down as the young people themselves. Middle-class families see their graduate offspring on the dole(救济金) queue and wonder why they bothered paying school fees. Working-class families feel an even keener sense of disappointment. For many such families, getting a child into university was the fulfillment of a lifelong dream. It represented upward social and financial mobility. It was proof that they were living in a dynamic, economically successful country. That dream does not seem so rosy now.(8) Graduate unemployment is not, ultimately, a political problem ready to be solved. Job-creation schemes for graduates are very low down in ministerial in-trays. If David Cameron’s Conservatives had a brilliant idea for guaranteeing every graduate a well-paid job, they would have unveiled it by now. It is a social problem, though a more deep-seated social problem than people perhaps realize.(9) The life of a student used to be pretty straightforward, all things considered. Y ou had to work hard at school to get into university, but once you had got there, you were on a magic carpet that would take you, via a bit of pot-smoking and binge-drinking, to the higher echelons of society: a secure job; a decent income; your own flat by the time you were 25; your own house by the time you were 30; a manageable mortgage; a pension plan; spare cash for school fees; then the same magic carpet for your own children.(10) There wasn’t room on the magic carpet for everyone, but almost anyone could get on the car-pet, provided only that they buckled down at school and worked hard enough to get the exam grades they needed. Now, with mounting graduate unemployment, schools will struggle to convince children that a Good University, that shining city on the hill, is everything it is cracked up to be. There is a whole world of anxiety and disillusion behind those bald employment figures.44. T he author begins with an episode from The Graduate in order to ____________.A. support the fact that more women are working nowB. emphasize the sharp contrast between now and thenC. demonstrate that there were much fewer graduates than nowD. show that few graduates started working right after graduation45. W ith regard to job opportunities for young graduates, the author sounds ____________.A. pessimisticB. hopefulC. indifferentD. furious46. T he author is ________ the Labour Government’s target: 50% of school leavers in higher education.A. in favour ofB. doubtful aboutC. strongly critical ofD. mildly critical of47. I n Para. 8, the author implies that ____________.A. there will be job-creation schemes for graduatesB. graduate unemployment is more of a political issueC. the Conservatives are doing far from enough to solve the issueD. graduate unemployment is both a political and a social issuePASSAGE THREE(1) No matter how many times you have seen images of the golden mask of boy-king Tutankhamen, come face to face with it in Egypt’s Cairo museum, and you will suck in your breath.(2) It was on Nov 4, 1923, that British archaeologist Howard Carter stumbled on a stone at the base of the tomb of another pharaoh (法老) in Luxor that eventually led to a sealed doorway.(3) Then, on Nov 23, Carter found a second door and when he stuck his head through it, what he saw was to stun the world. Inside lay the great stone coffin, enclosing three chests of gilded wood.(4) A few months later, when a crane lifted its granite cover and one coffin after another was removed, Carter found a solid block of gold weighing 110kg. In it was the mummy(木乃伊) of the 19-year-old Tutankhamen, covered in gold with that splendid funeral mask. And all this lay buried for more than 3,000 years.(5) Months after my trip to Egypt, I can relive the rush of emotion I felt and sense the hush that descended on the crammed Cairo museum’s Tutankhamen gallery.(6) Cairo, a dusty city of 20 million people, is a place where time seems to both stand still and rush into atter chaos. It is a place where the ancient and contemporary happily go along on parallel tracks.(7) Take the Great Pyramids of Giza, sitting on the western edge of the city. Even as the setting sun silhouettes these gigantic structures against the great desert expanse, a call for prayer floats over semi-finished apartment blocks filled with the activity of city life.(8) Dwarfed by these pyramids in the light of day, you can’t but marvel at the genius of man. The largest of these, the Pyramid of Khufu that rises to an astonishing 450 meter, is estimated to contain more than 2.5 million blocks of limestone, each weighing more than 2 tons. That such 5 a structure as this was erected in an age when the winch, pulley and wheel were unknown, defies the imagination.(9) Going into the pyramid, doubled over, up a steep incline, is a truly memorable experience and the few minutes you spend inside takes you back thousands of years, literally.(10) Standing guard at the entrance to the pyramid of Khafre is the 4,500-year-old Sphinx (獅身人面像), a magnificent structure that stands 20 meter tall and is 57 meter long, and was built to inspire awe for the pharaoh. But the creepy feeling inside the pyramid is nothing compared to what awaits visitors at the mummification section of Cairo museum. Thank heavens, there’s always a crowd in there despite the extra 100 Egyptian pounds ($18) charge.(11) The vast necropolis of Luxor is an immense archeological site. Each one of its tombs brings to mind life as it was lived 3,000 to 4,000 years ago, through its miraculously preserved wall paintings and reliefs.(12) North of Cairo lies the city of Alexandria founded by Alexander the Great in 331 BC. Alexandria was Egypt’s capital for more than 1,000 years, before its Islamic conquest in AD 640, and shows considerable Roman influence.(13) Here, historians are still searching for the coffins of romance’s legendary couple, Anthony and Cleopatra. They believe a large part of the history remains buried in a massive underwater city. It is also in Alexandria that you will find the intriguing catacombs,’a massive underground complex where the early Christians hid from the Romans.(14) While careful planning for the afterlife may lie buried underground in Cairo, it is noise and confusion on the streets. Donkey carts battle for space with pedestrians and the only operative road rule is “might is right.” But it is a city that is full of life- from the small roadside restaurants to the coffee shops where men and women smoke the shisha (水烟壶).(15) Donkey carts piled high with flat-breads magically find their way in and out the maddening traffic; young women in long skirts and headscarves hold hands with young men in open collar shirts, while conversations dwell on Kuwait’s chances at the soccer World Cup.48. A ccording to the context, “suck in your breath” means” feel a sense of ____________.A. aweB. horrorC. doubtD. delight49. W hich word CANNOT be used to describe the city of Cairo?A. Crowdedness.B. Quiet.C. Noise.D. Confusion.50. W hat is the author’s attitude towards Cairo?A. Positive.B. Negative.C. Objective.D. Not clear. Most people agree that these new forms of tourism should do the following. First, they should conserve the wildlife and culture of the area. Second, they should benefit the local people. Third, they should make a profit without destroying natural resources. They believe that free access is essential to provide people with cultural and educational opportunities. Besides, it can also boost the number of visitors, which consequently will help build the general national pride and promote cross-cultural understanding. In the long run, this will also exert substantial influence over the prosperity of the nation. In contrast, those against the suggestion claim that museums need to charge entrance fees in order to survive in the modern world. Furthermore, the government does not have sufficient funds to subsidize all institutions and there are other priorities for the government to fund. And free admission will only result in a decline in the field. What’s worse, funded by the government, the museums will no longer care about the number of their visitors, and thus will stop catering to the needs of customers to produce popular exhibitions and offer convenient services.I believe there is no clear answer to this question as there are such strong arguments on both sides. Perhaps it is possible for some museums to charge fees and for others not to. It will depend on the individual situation of museums.2012-TEM4-11。

They were Mr. and Mrs. F. Scott Fitzgerald, and Scott seems to have changed not one whit from the first time I met him at Princeton, when he was an eager undergraduate bent upon becoming a great author. He is still eager. He is still bent upon becoming a great author. He is at work now on a novel which his wife assures me is far better than either This Side of Paradise or The Beautiful and Damned, but like most of our younger novelists he finds it imperative to produce a certain number of short stories to make the wheels go around. That The Vegetable, his play, did not receive a Manhattan presentation seems to have disappointed rather than discouraged him.(分数:2.00)__________________________________________________________________________________________35.Not all painters are precocious (早熟), but Picasso was. In a technical way, he was as much a prodigy as Mozart, and his precocity seems to have fixed his peculiar sense of vocation. He was the son of a painter and by 13 he was so good at drawing that his father is said to have handed over his own brushes and paints to the boy and given up painting. If the story is true, it explains to some extent the mediumistic confidence with which Picasso worked. "Painting is stronger than I am, he once remarked." "It makes me do what it wants." If one were told that Science and Charity had been done by a 30-year-old Spanish scholar, one would have predicted a competent future for the man. Once one realizes that it was painted by a boy not yet 16, the skill seems ominously significant, like a visitation—and that is the general impression conveyed by Picasso' s earliest work.(分数:2.00)__________________________________________________________________________________________36.汉译英__________________________________________________________________________________________37.

PART V TRANSLATION (60 MIN)SECTION A CHINESE TO ENGLISHTranslate the underlined part of the following text into English. Write your translation on ANSWER SHEET THREE.

With pains gathering in her heart, she felt something burning hot between her eyebrows. Her chest was brimmed with depression and sorrow which was about to run out of her throat in any moment. She could not think straight when the headmaster told her that the child suffered from developmental retardation. She strode up and down in the room where other children were staying. There was only one window in the room, out of which some shady trees were dancing. “Just leave it here”, she thought to herself, “This might be the best choice. There are kind-hearted priests and nuns and the place will be renovated into a Medicare C enter”. The child would be her secret kept in the buildings behind the woods.SECTION B ENGLISH TO CHINESETranslate the following text into Chinese. Write your translation on ANSWER SHEET THREE.In some cases, intelligent people implementing intelligent policies are responsible for producing a "boomerang effect"; they actually create more of whatever it is they seek to reduce in the first place. The boomerang effect has been achieved many times in recent years by men and women of goodwill. State legislatures around the nation have recently raised the drinking age back to 21 in an effort to reduce the prevalence of violent deaths among our young people. But such policies seem instead to have created the conditions for even more campus violence. Some college students who previously drank in bars andlounges under the watchful supervision of bouncers (夜总会,酒吧等保安人员) (not to mention owners ea~er to keep their liquor licenses) now retreat to the sanctuary of their fraternity houses and apartments, where they no longer control their behaviour - or their drinking. The boomerang effect has also played a role in attempts to reduce the availability of illicit drugs. During recent years, the federal government has been quite successful in reducing the supply of street drugs. As fields are burned and contraband (违禁品)confiscated, the price of street drugs has skyrocketed to a point where cheap altematives have begun to compete in the marketplace. Unfortunately, the cheap alternatives are even more harmful than the illicit drugs they replace. boomerang: a curved flat piece of wood that can be thrown so as to return to the thrower

They distort our thinking, making us believe that what is true now will be true forever, though perhaps on a larger scale. Because we have annihilated distance on this planet, we imagine that we can do it once again. The facts are far otherwise, and we will see them clearly if we forget the present and turn our minds toward the past.To our ancestors, the vastness of the earth was a dominant fact controlling their thoughts and lives. In all earlier ages than ours, the world was wide indeed, and no man could ever see more than a tiny fraction of its immensity. A few hundred miles—a thousand, at the most—was infinity. Only a lifetime ago parents waved farewell to their emigrating children in the virtual certainty that they would never meet again. And now, within one incredible generation, all this has changed. Over the seas where Odysseus wandered for a decade, the Rome-Beiru comet whispers its way within the hour. And above that, the closer satellites span the distance between Troy and Ithaca in less than a minute.Psychologically as well as physically, there are no longer any remote places on Earth. When a friend leaves for what was once a far country, even if he has no intention of returning, we cannot feel that same sense of irrevocable separation that saddened our forefathers. We know that he is only hours away by jet liner, and that we have merely to reach for the telephone to hear his voice. In a few years, when the satellite communication network is established, we will be able to see friends on the far side of the earth as easily as we talk to them on the other side of the town. Then the world will shrink no more, for it will have become a dimensionless point.(From We’ll Never Conquer Space written by Arthur Clarke in

Where Shakespeare Slept, or So They SayTucked away in this small village in Buckinghamshire County is the former Elizabethan coaching inn where William Shakespeare is said to have penned part of "A Midsummer Night's Dream."Dating from 1534, the inn, now called Shakespeare House, is thought to have been built as a Tudor hunting lodge. Later it became a stop for travelers between London and Stratford-upon-Avon, where Shakespeare was born and buried. It was "Brief Lives," a 17th-century collection of biographies by John Aubrey, that linked Shakespeare to the inn, saying that he had stayed there and drawn inspiration for the comedy while in the village. One of the current owners, Nick Underwood, said the local lore goes even further: "It is also said he appears at the oriel window on the top floor of the house on April 23 every year -- the date he is said to have been born and to have died." "In later years, the house later became a farmhouse, with 150 acres of land, but, over time, pieces were sold off," Mr. Underwood said. "In the 20th century, it was owned by two American families." Now, he and his co-owner, Roy Elsbury, have put the seven-bedroom property on the market at£1.375 million, or $2.13 million. Despite its varied uses and renovations over the years, the 4,250-square-foot, or 395-square-meter, inn has retained so much of its original character that the organization English Heritage lists it as a Grade II* property, indicating that it is particularly important and of "more than special interest." Only 27 percent of the 1,600 buildings on the organization's register have this designation. We knew of the house before we bought it and were very excited when it came up for sale. It is so unusual to find an Elizabethan property of this size, in this area, and when wesaw it, we absolutely fell in love with it," Mr. Underwood said. "We have taken great pleasure in working on it and living here. This house is all about the history." In addition to being the owners' home, the property currently is run as a luxury guest house, with rooms rented for£99 to£250 a night."Shakespeare House is a wonderful example of Elizabethan architecture," said Dean Heaviside, the national sales director of Fine real estate agency, which is representing the owners. "It has been beautifully restored and offers a unique lifestyle, which brings a taste of the past together with modern-day comfort. It is rare to find a home like this on the market."参考译文:这家前伊丽莎白时期的驿站旅馆坐落于白金汉郡的这个小村落之中,据说莎士比亚的?仲夏夜之梦?有一局部书稿就是在这里完成的。

The best way to overcome the fear of death – so at least it seems to me – is to make your interests gradually wider and more impersonal, until bit by bit the walls of the ego recede, and your life becomes increasingly merged in the universal life. An individual human existence should be like a river – small at first, narrowly contained within its banks, and rushing passionately past rocks and over waterfalls. Gradually the river grows wider, the banks recede, the waters flow more quietly, and in the end, without any visible break, they become merged in the sea, and painlessly lose their individual being. The man who, in old age, can see his life in this way, will not suffer from the fear of death, since the things he cares for will continue.

America is the land of opportunities for women. Already they own about eighty-five percent of the wealth of the nation. Soon they will have it all. Divorce has become a lucrative process, simple to arrange and easy to forget; and ambitious females can repeat it as often as they please and parlay their winnings to astronomical figures. The husband’s death also brings satisfactory rewards and some ladies prefer to rely upon this method. They know that the waiting period will not be unduly protracted, for overwork and hypertension are bound to get the poor devil before long, and he will die at his desk with a bottle of benzedrines in one hand and packet of tranquillizers in the other.

New buildings, massive in span and artful in design, have sprung up everywhere. A plethora of stores and shops have sprouted up everywhere. Within those stores one can find virtually anything one wants from anywhere in the world. I remember in the “old Beijing” there were not so many places to shop and the variety of products available was meager at best. Once while shopping at the only real department store on Wangfujing street, a consignment of new trousers were put out on display and there was an energetic rush by dozens of people to go buy whatever the could get their hands on. As I witnessed one fellow buy several pairs of pants, all different sizes, I asked why. He explained that one never knew when these trousers would become available again---so he wanted to buy as many as he could and he would either trade or exchanges them with his neighbors for other things he needed that they might have had the chance to buy. Now you can enter almost any store on Wangfujing street and find an ample of supply of dizzying array of clothes---enough to suit virtuall y any need or taste. To me, and I’m sure to thousands of other people, the difference between then and now seems extraordinary. But to hundreds of others the seeming luxury of chances and choices now available is becoming a rather ordinary state of affairs.
