Because six out of every 10 accidental deaths happen to Chinese children who are playing, Shanghai Johnson & Johnson Pharmaceutical (SJJP), a US-based pharmaceutical giant, is working on a Safe Kids Program to prevent injuries and deaths.Since the Safe Kids Worldwide was set up in 1987 by Johnson & Johnson in the US, it has contributed to a nearly 40 percent decline in the child death rate from accidental injuries there. Learning from the successful experience, SJJP began the Safe Kids Program in China in 1999.A recent survey conducted by SJJP and Safe Kids Worldwide China indicates that more than half of the responding parents didn’t know how to help their children keep safe and that half of the parents didn’t know about their children’s motor skill development at different ages. The survey covered 3,359 Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou’s parents with children between infancy (幼年) and 14.Additionally, more than 40 percent of the parents d idn’t know how to help their children to prepare well for sports activities. For instance, they don’t know how to have their children warm up or realize the importance of a playground-check before sports activities. To help correct the problems, SJJP and Safe Kids Worldwide China have been translating and editing safety education materials, sending them to parents free of charge, and delivering free lectures in kindergartens, schools and residential communities for the last 10 years.Currently, a special team has been set up and traveling around 12 key cities of China to popularize child sports safety knowledge and offer free training for young parents.Though SJJP refuses to say how much it has spent on the program, it says the number in terms of money, staff and technology, is large.SJJP was founded by Johnson & Johnson in 1995 and specializes in manufacturing and development of non-prescription medicines (非处方药) and health care foods and products. So far, its investment has exceeded (超过) $41 million.Manners nowadays in metropolitan cities like London are practically non-existent. It is nothing for a big, strong schoolboy to push an elderly woman aside to take the last remaining seat on the underway or bus. This question of giving up seats in public transport is much argued about by young men, who say that since women have claimed equality, they no longer deserve to be treated with politeness and that those who go out to work should take their turns in the rat race like anyone else. But women have never claimed to be physically strong as men. Even if it is not agreed, however, the fact remains that courtesy(礼节) should be shown to the old and the sick. Are we really so lost to all ideals of unselfishness that we can sit there indifferently(冷漠地) reading the paper or a book, saying to ourselves, “First come, first served” while a gray-haired woman, a mother with a young child or a cripple(残障者) stands? Yet this is all too often seen.Older people, tired and impatient from a day’s work, are not always con siderate either — far from it. Many arguments break out as the older people push and squeeze(挤)each other to get on buses. One cannot approve this, of course, but one does feel there is just a little more excuse. It seems urgent, not only that communications in transport should be improved, but also that communication between human beings should be kept smooth and polite. All over cities, it seems that people are too tired and too rushed to be polite. Shop assistants won’t bother to assist; taxi drivers shout at each other as they dash dangerously around corners; bus conductors pull the bell before their desperate passengers have time to get on or off the bus, and so on. It seems to us that it is up to the young to do their small part to stop such lowering of moral standards.(339words)When I was little, my family used to move frequently. I felt 43 and helpless and I was afraid that I would 44 her as my best friend. She stayed calm and said to me: “Rain, you c an achieve more than I do, so 45 to your dreams and make a big effort! Real friendship doesn’t fade and we will be best friends forever.” Maybe she didn’t realize what a great 46 she was to me at that time. However, it turned out that my 47 were well-founded I felt that the 48 between us was getting bigger and bigger. One day, she sent me a text message happily telling me that she had fallen in love with a handsome boy in her class.I felt happy for her, but at the same time I was secretly worried about our friendship. I 49 her several times intending to tell her to think carefully about her 50 with the boy, but I got no more messages from her. I felt sad that perhaps our friendship would not 51 .

Conclusion 10. _____
Society cannot be separated from us.
Education plays an important role in our life and deeply influences society. However, how does society influence education? Read on and find out. Before understanding the influence of society on education, we must define society. Society is a large social group with a special cultural and economic organization. It is a group of human beings who share a common system of customs, values and laws. From the definition of society, it is clear that we human beings are its building blocks. As we interact with people, try to understand their thinking styles, we soon realize that there is so much to learn from them.
Society plays an important role in education and influences it both positively and negatively. Social inequalities and unhealthy educational practices are some of the negative influences. In some social groups, women have no right to receive education. There are others who force children to work instead of going to school. If customs prevent some group in a society from progressing in life and decrease the well-being of society, then the purpose of education is lost. Society is something that cannot be separated from us. It is we who make up the society. It is entirely in our hands whether to add value to our education or devalue it.

1On November 4th, 2008, Obama made history by being elected as the first black president of the United States. He defeated John McCain in a landslide victory.Obama’s story starts in opposite corners of the world. His white mother was born in the heartland of the US. His black father grew up in a tiny village in Kenya. They met during college in Hawaii, but his father left the family when Obama was just two years old and his mother moved to Indonesia. At 10, Obama moved back to live with his white grandparents in Hawaii. At his class, a white boy asked Obama if his father ate people. Out of embarrassment, Obama lied to hi classmates that his father was a prince. “I kept asking who I am and I ended up trying drugs and drinking,” Obama recalled.Things came to change after the young man made friends with those with a similar background at college. Their experiences back in Africa helped Obama to finally face up to his African origin. He worked hard to become a star at Harvard Law School and the third black senator in US history. At the beginning of his campaign for the White House, few people viewed Obama favorably. Many doubted his unusual background, which left him neither “black” enough nor white enough. But Obama turned his pain of growing up into a tool to make Americans believe: “There is not a black America and a white America, a Latino America, an Asian America. There’s the United States of America.”“Barack Obama’s victory is a historic victory that promised change and overcame centuries of prejudice. His success fulfilled Martin Luther King’s dream that a man be judged not by the color of his skin, but by the content of his character,” wrote ABC. Many students are ignoring building their own careers to seek a chance at fame instead, the Association of Teachers and Lecturers (A TL) survey found.Almost two-thirds of teachers said sports stars were the type of celebrity many pupils wantedto follow while more than half of students wanted to be pop stars. The survey said the celebrities that students aspired to mostlywere David and Victoria Beckham who live in Los Angeles now.Soccer player Beckham is on the top of the survey while in secondplace, with almost a third of the survey’s votes, was his 33-year-oldpop star wife.Almost half of the 300 teachers surveyed said pupils tried tolook like or behave like the celebrities they most admired, with somegirls even dressing "unsuitably"."We are not surprised about the influence of celebrity culture inschools —it reflects the current media passion with celebrities and the effect of celebrity culture on society as a whole," A TL general secretary Mary Bousted said in a statement."Celebrities can have a positive effect on pupils. They can raise pupils’ aspirations and desires for the future. However, celebrity culture can spread the idea that celebrity status is the greatest achievement and reinforce the belief that other career choices are not as valuable," said one primary school teacher. University of Richmond psychology professor Craig Kinsley believes his findings will translate into humans.“Our research shows that the hormones of pregnancy(怀孕) are protecting the brain, including estrogen(雌激素), which we know has many neuroprotective (保护神经的) effects,” Kinsley said.“It’s rat data but humans are mammals just like these animals are mammals,” he added in a telephone interview. “They go through pregnancy and hormonal changes.”Kinsley said he hoped public health officials and researchers will look to see if having had children protects a woman from Alzheimer’s and other forms of age-related brain decline.“When people think about pregnancy, they think about what happens to babies and the mother from the neck down,” said Kinsley, who presented his findings to the annual meeting of the Society of Neuroscience in Orlando, Florida.“They do not realize that hormones are washing on the brain. If you look at female animals who have never gone through pregnancy, they act differently toward young. It doesn’t disturb the water as it waits for its meal, and there is barely a ripple(波纹) when it skims(掠过) across the surface at lightning speed to catch its prey.Grass water spiders deal swiftly with larger insects like damsel flies by pulling their heads under the water and holding them there until they drown. After a meal, the grass water spider spends up to half an hour grooming(修饰) itself. It wipes its eight eyes, brushes its antennae(触角), and takes special care to clean the hairs on its body.It is the hairs that trap tiny bubbles(泡沫) of air so that the spider can run down a blade(叶片) of grass and stay underwater for up to an hour when it is frightened. The hairs also keep the spider dry, even underwater. It is only when the female spider is caring for the young that she does not hunt on the water. After mating, she produces a large egg sac(囊), which she carries around for five weeks. Once the eggs start to hatch, she attaches the sac to some blades of grass or a thistle. It gives us something to share and creats an atmosphere of appreciation. We are automatically attracted to people who make us laugh.Successful people take their duties seriously, but seldom take themselves or life too seriously. Above all, they have the ability to laugh at themselves. People appreciate those who can see the humorous side of any situation.Humor should be appreciated, however, if it is going to be effective. Keep the following suggestions in mind.Okay, the first thing you need to do is relax. No one’s going to throw tomatoes at you if you strike out, and you’re not going for some life-changing test. Y ou just want to add some interest to your life and conversations, and appear more easygoing. So don’t put so much pressure on yourself. See the humor in situations; you’ll see that most situations, even getting a $200 dollars speeding ticket or falling down on a banana peel have humor written all over them —the trick is finding them and being able to laugh at yourself.Y ou can always take bits and pieces of other s’ humor, but you’ll want to adapt your character to your own style and personality —in turn, this will be easier for you and sound more true as you won’t have to try as hard.Being funny isn’t only about telling great jokes; it’s all in your attitude, how you project yourself, and your delivery. Be lively and alive when you speak, and you can make any story funny.Make eye contact with people, speak with confidence, and everyone will want to hear your stories. On the other hand, if your humor is darker, sarcastic (讽刺), then play the part and talk in a monotonous voice. Y our delivery has to go with your humor, and if your timing is off,k then it can ruin the entire joke.Suggested Answers: 1. effective 2. interest 3. suggestions/tips/advice 4. relaxed5. yourself6. style7. way8. contact9. delivery10. duties/ reponsibilitiesThe common cold is a self-limited epidemic that can be caused be a nmuber of types of viruses. More than 200 different types of viruses are known to cause the common cold. Because so many different viruses can cause a cold and because new cold viruses constantly develop, the body never builds up resistance against all of them. The common cold is the most frequently occurring illness in the world.Symptoms of the common cold include sore throat, sneezing, cough, and perhaps a fever and headache. Many people with a cold feel tired and achy. These symptoms will usually last anywhere from three to ten days. The common cold is usually spread by direct hand-to-hand contact with infected (带菌的) secretions (分泌物) or from contaminated (被污染的) surfaces. For example, if a person with a cold blows or touches his nose and then touches someone else, that person can later become infected with the virus. Additionally, a cold virus can live on objects such as pens, books, telephones, computer keyboards, and coffee cups for several hours and can thus be acquired from contact with these objects.Though the common cold usually occurs in the fall and winter months, the cold weather itself does not cause the common cold. Rather, it is thought that during cold-weather months people spend more time indoors and are close to each other, thus making the spread of the virus much more easily.Supportive measures for the common cold include rest and drinking plenty of water. The most important measure to prevent the common cold is frequent hand washing, as this can destroy viruses that you have acquired from touching contaminated surfaces. Also, try to avoid sharing things if someone in your family has a cold.Answers: 1. epidemic 2. symtoms 3. catch/ have/get/ 4.like/as/including 5.Sread6. objects7. indoors8. prevent/prohibit9. frequently/often 10.cold7One kilogram --- that was all it took to crown(给……加冕)the world's strongest man.German weightlifter Matthias Steiner pulled ahead of Russian rival Evgeny Chigishev to win the Olympic men's +105 kg weightlifting gold medal on Tuesday.Steiner lifted a total of 461kg, 203kg in the snatch(抓举) and 258kg in the clean and jerk(挺举), to beat Chigishev by a single kilogram. It has reduced automobile crashes on some roads by nearly 75 percent using a simple optical illusion. But stripes, called chevrons(人字形), painted on the roads make drivers think that they are driving faster than they really are, and thus drivers slow down. Now the American Automobile Association Foundation(基金会) for Traffic Safety in Washington D.C. is planning to repeat Japan’s success. Starting next year, the foundation will paint chevrons and other patterns of stripes on selected roads around the country to test how w ell the patterns reduce highway crashes.Excessive (too great) speed plays a major role in as much as one fifth of all fatal traffic accidents, according to the foundation. To help reduce those accidents, the foundation will conduct its tests in areas where speed-related hazards (danger) are the greatest curves, exit slopes, traffic circles, and bridges. Some studies suggest that straight, horizontal bars painted across roads can initially cut the average speed of drivers in half. However, traffic often returns to full speed within months as drivers become used to seeing the painted bars.Chevrons, scientists say, not only give drivers the impression that they are driving faster than they really are but also make a lane appear to be narrower. The result is a longer lasting reduction in highway speed and the number of traffic accidents.Suggested Answers: 1.Way/Method/Measure 2. reduce/cut 3. narrower 4. slow5. longer/ long6. used/accustomed7. advantage8. success/experience 9.test/experiment/trial 10. hazards/danger9Lego, the inventor of those colorful bricks that have inspiredkids’ imaginations world-wide, has celebrated its 50th anniversary. On January 28, 1958, a man named Godtfred Kirk Christiansencreated the plastic building bricks that can now be found in almostevery child’s toy box. The simple building block has become one ofthe most well-known and popular toys around the world."The Lego brick continues to be very attractive, because it allows children, and others, to develop their creativity and imagination," said Charlotte Simonsen, a spokeswoman of the Danish Lego company. The company’s building brick allows an infinite number of links. Wit h just two bricks there are 24 different links, and with six, there are 915 million possibilities, according to Lego.A half-century after its creation, more than 400 million children and adults spend five billion hours a year putting the bricks together and pulling them apart. Also, the bricks made today can still interlock with those made in 1958.Lego bricks are not just child’s play: they also attract the interest of adults. South Korean adventurer, Heo Y oung-Ho, who climbed Mount Everest in 1987, left a Lego toy behind in the snow during his climb. After its great success Lego experienced a severe crisis at the end of the 1990s, hit hard by fierce competition from electronic games. This so-called "Toy of the Century" then suffered a dark period that lasted several years. With great efforts, the company began to prosper again, and in 2006 it earned about 1.5 billion dollars in 130 countries. Even now some people get most of their news from television or radio. Many buy a paper only on Saturday or Sunday. But for most people reading a newspaper has become a habit passed down from generation to generation. The nature of what is news may change. What basically makes news is what affects our lives — the big political stories, the coverage of the wars, earthquakes and other disasters, will continue much the same. I think there will be more coverage of scientific research, though. It’s already happening in areas that may directly affect our lives, like genetic(基因) engineering. In the future, I think there will be more coverage of scientific explanations of why we feel as we do — as we develop a better understanding of how the brain operates and what our feelings really are. It’s quite possible that in the next century newspapers will be transmitted(传送) electronically from Fleet Street and printed out in our own home. In fact, I’m pretty sure that how it will happen in the future. Y ou will probably be able to choose from a menu, making up your own newspaper by picking out the things you want to read — sports and international news, etc.I think people have got it wrong when they talk about competition between the different media. They actually feed off each other. Some people once foresaw that television would kill off newspapers, but that hasn’t happened. What is read on the printed page lasts longer than pictures on a screen or sound lost in the air.

I woke up this morning feeling like I had a ton of bricks on top of me. It's like I couldn't breathe, and the weight of the world was pressing down on my chest. I hate feeling this way, but it seems like it's becoming a regular thing for me.I don't know what's wrong with me. I mean, I have a good life, right? I have a loving family, great friends, and I'm doing okay in school. But for some reason, I just can't shake this feeling of dread and anxiety.Sometimes I wish I could just disappear for a while, you know? Just escape from everything and everyone. But then I feel guilty for even thinking that way. It's likeI'm stuck in this endless cycle of self-doubt and self-loathing.I've tried talking to my friends about it, but theyjust don't seem to understand. They tell me to "just behappy" or "think positive," but it's not that simple. I wish it were that simple.I know I should probably talk to someone about this, like a therapist or a counselor. But the thought of opening up to a stranger about my deepest, darkest thoughts is terrifying. What if they judge me? What if they think I'm just being dramatic?I guess I'm just tired of feeling like this. I want to be able to enjoy life without this constant cloud hanging over me. I want to feel light and free, like I used to. But right now, I just feel stuck. And I don't know how to get out of this rut.。

Title: The Importance of Environmental ProtectionIn today's world, environmental protection has become a crucial task for every individual and community. The relentless pursuit of industrialization and modernization has taken a heavy toll on our planet, leading to climate change, pollution, and the depletion of natural resources. It is our responsibility to ensure a sustainable future for ourselves and future generations.Firstly, we must prioritize the reduction of carbon emissions. The excessive use of fossil fuels is a major contributor to global warming. Transitioning to renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, and hydroelectric power is crucial. Additionally, individuals can make a difference by conserving energy at home, such as turning off lights and fans when not in use, and using public transportation or cycling instead of private vehicles.Secondly, waste management is essential. We must adopt a circular economy approach, where waste is reduced, reused, and recycled. This can be achieved through proper waste segregation and the use of composting and recycling bins. Furthermore, consumers should be encouraged to purchase products made from recycled materials and avoid single-use plastics. Moreover, protecting biodiversity and ecosystems is paramount. Forests, wetlands, and coral reefs are vital for maintaining the balance of nature. We must preserve these ecosystems by banning deforestation, restricting industrial pollution, and promoting sustainable tourism. In conclusion, environmental protection is a shared responsibility that requires collective effort. Governments, communities, and individuals must work together to implement sustainable practices and policies. By doing so, we can ensure a healthier, safer, and more prosperous future for ourselves and our planet.。

Scientists find that hard-working people live longer than average men and women. Career women are healthier than housewives. Evidence shows that the jobless are in poorer health than the job-holders. A study shows that whenever the employment rate increases by 1%, the death rate increase correspondingly(相应地) by 2%. All this comes down to one point: work is helpful to health. Why is work good for health? It is because work keeps people busy, away from loneliness. Researches show that people feel unhappy, worried and lonely when they have nothing to do. Instead, the happiest are those who are busy. Work serves as a bridge between man and reality. By work, people come into contact with each other. By collective activities, they find friendship and warmth. This is helpful to health. The loss of work means the loss of everything. It affects man spiritually and makes him likely to disease.Besides, work gives one a sense of fulfillment and a sense of achievement. Work makes one feel his value and status in society. When a writer finishes his writing or teacher sees his students grow, they are happy beyond words.[写作内容]1)以约30个词概括短文的要点;2)然后以约120个词就“努力学习,快乐生活”的主题发表看法,并包括如下要点:a)你赞同“努力学习也可以快乐生活”这一观点吗?

[范文鉴赏] Study hard and enjoy yourselvesThe author highlights the effect of work on people’s health, because it can rid one of loneliness, and make one feel fruitful and proud of himself, which always contributes to a good body.In common with the author, I agree that the harder you work, the happier you will be, as hard work can keepa person busy, and gives one a sense of achievement, hence he will be self-confident and feel happy.Around me, some of my classmates work very hard, hoping to fulfill their dream. However, they don’t seem unhappy. Oppositely, they try to find fun even under the pressure of the NMET. For example, they may share the joy with others when working out a problem. Sometimes they may play a trick on his partner using the newly-learned idioms, thus refresh themselves quickly. As for me, I think only when we truly experience what fun it is, can we spare no effort to study hard and meanwhile enjoy ourselves.“读写任务”记叙文写作导练阅读下面的短文,然后按照要求写一篇150词左右的英语短文。

About forty years ago, I was an instructor in the military college at Woolwich, when young Scoresby was given his first examination. I felt extremely sorry for him. Everybody answered the questions well, intelligently, while he did not know anything, so to speak. He was a nice, pleasant young man. It was painful to see him stand there and give answers that were wonders of stupidity.I knew of course that when examined again he would fail and be thrown out. So, I said to myself, it would bea simple, harmless act to help him as much as I could.I took him aside and found he knew a little about Julius Cesar’s history. But he did not know anything else. So, I tested him and worked him like a slave. I made him work, over and over again, on a few questions about, which I knew he would be asked. He came through very well on the day of the examination. He got high praise too, while others who knew a thousand more than he were sharply criticized!I thought that what in the end would destroy him would be the mathematics examination. I decided to make his end as painless as possible. So, I pushed facts into his stupid head for hours. Finally, however, I was shocked out of my mind. He took the first prize! And he got the highest praise.[写作内容]1)以约30个词概括短文的要点;2)然后以约120个词写一篇记叙文,描写你或你的亲友通过勤奋创造奇迹的经历,并包括如下的要点:a)叙述你或你的亲友通过勤奋创造奇迹的一次真实或虚构的经历;b)你或你亲友的是如何创造奇迹的;c)别人对你或你亲友的评价。
