Chaucer took his narrative inspiration for his works from several sources but still remained an entirely individual poet. His first narrative poem, The Book of the Duchess, was probably written shortly after the death of Blanche, Duchess of Lancaster, first wife of John Gaunt, in September 1369. His next important work, The House of Fame, was written between 1374 and 1385. Soon afterward Chaucer translated The Consolation of Philosophy by Boethius, and wrote the poem The Parliament of Birds.

Chaucer’s Contribution to English Poetry
• Geoffrey Chaucer, the founder of English poetry, was born in about 1340 in London. Chaucer's contribution to English poetry lies chiefly in the fact that : • (1) he introduced the rhymed stanzas of various types , especially the rhymed couplet of iambic pentameter. Later on it’s called the "heroic couplet” instead of the old Anglo-Saxon alliterative verse. • (2)Though drawing influences from French, Italian and Latin models, he is the first great poet who wrote in the current English language. • (3) His production of so much excellent poetry was an important factor in establishing English as the literary language of the country. • (4) The spoken English of the time consisted of several dialects, and Chaucer did much in making the dialect of London the foundation for modern English speech.

The Romance 罗曼史
The romance is a popular literary form in the medieval period. It uses verse or prose to sing knightly adventures or other heroic deeds. It follows the motifs of the quest, the test, the meeting with the evil giant and the encounter with the beautiful beloved. The hero is usually the knight, who sets out on a journey to accomplish some omissions. The romance uses mysteries and fantasies, romantic love, and standardized characterization. Its structure is loose and episodic, and its language is simple and straightforward. The importance of the romance can be seen as a means of showing medieval aristocratic men and women in relation to their idealized view of the world. The romance reflects a chivalric age.
