1.Books are to mankind ________memory is to the individual. 书与人类的关系等于记忆与个
人的关系。

这是一种特殊句型用法:A is to B what C is to D. 意思是“A 与B 的关系等于C 与D 的关系”。

又如:
He is to the teacher _____ he is to his father. 他和老师的关系等于他和他父亲的关系。

Our company is to theirs ______ I am to my brother. 我们公司与他们公司的关系相当于我和
我弟弟的关系。

句中mankind 和man 用法相同,指不分男女所有的人,而许多人认为这种用法是对女性的
歧视而加以避免,改用the human race (用作单数)或humans, human beings, people 。

又如:
Disease is an enemy of ________. 疾病是人类的敌人。

The scientists' discoveries were of great help to _______. 科学家的发现对人类有极大的帮助。

句中picture 用作动词,是“描绘”“描写”的意思,又如:

The speaker ________ the suffering of the poor for us. 演讲人为我们描述了穷苦人的苦难遭遇。

In his poem he _________ the beauties of nature. 在他的诗歌中,他描写了大自然的美丽。

in sorrow and in suffering“在悲伤和苦难中”,这里in与表示情感的名词连用,表示“在……状态中”,又如:
He stared at me ___________. 他惊讶地盯着我。

We two went on our way __________________. 我们两个高兴地上了路。

store…with…“在……里储存……”,又如:

句中owe…to…作“将……归功于/归因于……”解,又如:

He _________ his success more_________ luck than ______ability.
他认为他成功更多的是靠运气,而不是因为自己有能力。

please“使高兴”“使满意”,又如:

句中so+adj./adv.+as to do…表示“到做某事的程度”“达到……程度以至于……”的意思,so是副词,修饰形容词或副词。

又如:
She was ______________ to phone for a taxi for me. 她没那么热心,为我打电话叫辆出租车。

How could you be ___________ to believe him?你怎么这么愚蠢竟相信他(的话)?
Would you be _______________the door when you leave? 你离开时请把门锁上,好吗?
句中for 用作连词,表示“因为、由于”的意思,多用于书面语,一般和前一部分用逗号分开,引起的分句对前面的分句加以解释,有时它引起的分句并不表示原因,而是后来发生的情况,它可以推断出有前面所说的情况。

He shook his head, ______ he thought differently. 他摇摇脑袋,因为他想法不同。

The days were short, _____ it was now December. 天短了,现在是十二月份了。

It must have rained in the night. _____ when I woke the next morning I saw the grass wet.
晚上肯定下雨了,因为第二天我醒来时,看到草地湿了。

5.If anyone would______________________ that ever lived, with palaces and gardens and fine dinners, and wines and coaches, and beautiful clothes, and hundreds of servants,

这是一句虚拟语气的句子。

make sb+n.“使某人成为……”,又如:
She ______________________. 她使他成为她的助手。

All work and no play ___________Jack a dull boy. 只干不玩,变成呆汉。

They ___________________. 他们使之成为一种规则。

句中on condition that…“按……条件”“在……条件下”,又如:
He was allowed to go swimming ______________ he kept near the other boys.
准许他去游泳的条件是,他必须不远离别的孩子。

I'll come _______________ John is invited, too. 如果约翰也受到邀请,我就来。

6.I _____________ be a poor man in a garret with plenty of books _______ a king who did not love reading.
我宁愿当个穷人住在阁楼里,有很多的书,也不愿当一个不爱读书的国王。

句中would rather…than…作“宁愿……而不……”解,通常略作-'d rather。

注意,rather 后的动词不定式没有to。

又如:
I____________ walk ________ take a bus. 我愿意走路而不愿意坐公共汽车。

She ______________ die_________ lose the children. 她宁可死也不愿意失去孩子们。

I_________________ have the red one________ the green one. 我宁可要红的也不要绿的。

I__________ deal ____ a man than with a woman. 我宁愿和男的打交道,也不愿跟女的打交道。

7.Books, indeed, __________ us ________ a whole enchanted palace of thoughts. 的确,书赋予
我们一座神奇的思想殿堂。

endow…with…意思是“赋予……”,又如:
Nature ______________ her __________ beauty and intelligence. 大自然赋予她美丽和聪慧。

He _______________ by nature __________ great talents. 他天生就有很大的才能。

8.______________ they give us an even more vivid idea than the actual reality, just as reflections are often more beautiful than real nature.
可以说,书所给予我们的思想比现实更惟妙惟肖,就像回忆往往比真的现实情况更加美丽一样。

in one way 或in a way 表示“在某种程度上”“就某个意义上来说”,又如:
______________ her health is much improved, but she is still not really well.
在某种程度上说,她的健康情况有很大改善,但是她还是不太好。

The work was well done ____________. 总的来说,这个工作做得很好。

_________________it is a good thing that I did not get that post I applied for.
就某种意义上说,我没得到我申请的那份工作是一件好事。

roam 可用作不及物动词,作“漫游”“漫行”“随便走动”解,也可用作及物动词。

例如:They _________________ around the fields. 他们在田间漫步。

We __________ through the deserted village. 我们漫步于空寂无人的村庄。

He ____________ the hills. 他漫步在山坡上。

Hungry wolves roamed the forest in search of food. 饥饿的狼群在森林中游荡寻找食物。

句中soar 作“高飞”“翱翔”解,又如:
The bird ___________ through the air. 鸟儿在空中飞翔。

I saw an eagle ____________ high into the sky. 我看见一只鹰飞向高高的天空。
