1.Books are to mankind ________memory is to the individual. 书与人类的关系等于记忆与个
人的关系。
这是一种特殊句型用法:A is to B what C is to D. 意思是“A 与B 的关系等于C 与D 的关系”。
又如:
He is to the teacher _____ he is to his father. 他和老师的关系等于他和他父亲的关系。
Our company is to theirs ______ I am to my brother. 我们公司与他们公司的关系相当于我和
我弟弟的关系。
句中mankind 和man 用法相同,指不分男女所有的人,而许多人认为这种用法是对女性的
歧视而加以避免,改用the human race (用作单数)或humans, human beings, people 。又如:
Disease is an enemy of ________. 疾病是人类的敌人。
The scientists' discoveries were of great help to _______. 科学家的发现对人类有极大的帮助。
