Joseph Andrews, or The History of the Adventures of Joseph Andrews and of his Friend Mr. Abraham Adams, was the first published full-length novel of the English author and magistrate Henry Fielding, and indeed one of the first novels in the English language. • Published in 1742 and defined by Fielding as a ‘comic romance’, it is the story of a good-natured footman's adventures on the road home from London with his friend and mentor, the absent-minded parson Abraham Adams.

The novel draws on a variety of inspirations. Written ‘in imitation 仿造of the manner of Cervantes塞万提斯 ,the work owes much of its humour to the techniques of burlesque讽刺幽默 developed by Cervantes, and its subject-matter to the seemingly loose arrangement of events, digressions and lower-class characters to the genre of writing known as picaresque. In deference to the literary tastes and recurring tropes of the period, it relies on bawdy humour, an impending marriage and a mystery surrounding unknown parentage, but conversely is rich in philosophical digressions, classical erudition and social purpose.

Writing purpose:
Tom Jones, Henry Fielding's third novel, was first published in England in 1749 and was an immediate best-seller. It is a comedy in both senses of the formal definition: it is amusing and all ends well.
• The novel represents the coming together of the two competing aesthetics美学 of eighteenth-century literature: the mock-heroic模仿英雄诗 and neoclassical新古典主义 (and, by extension, aristocratic) approach of Augustans such as Alexander Pope and Jonathan Swift; and the popular, domestic prose fiction of novelists such as Daniel Defoe and Samuel Richardson.
• Originally entitled The History of Tom Jones, A Foundling, the book tells the story of the title character from infancy through his marriage to the beautiful and virtuous（kind) Sophia Western, the pursuit of whom takes up much of the tale. Along the way, Fielding relentlessly satirizes (satirize ['sæ tɪraɪz] vt. 讽刺) the hypocrisy (hypocrisy [hi'pɔkrisi] n. 虚伪；伪善and vanity (vanity ['væ nəti] n. 虚荣心；空虚；浮华； • of most of his supporting cast. The greatest novelist of the 18th century and is one of the most artistic that English literature has produced. He has been regarded by some as “Father of the English Novel” for his contribution to the establishment of the form of the modern novel.
• Of his 25 plays, the most popular was the farce Tom Thumb (1730).
• In 1740 he was called to the bar;
• In 1752 he returned to political writing as publisher of the periodical, The Covent Garden Journal. However, illness forced him to give up his post as magistrate地斱法官 in 1753.
