22.(8分)Losing a wallet is one of those careless acts most of us have come across, at some point or the other in our lives. While most of us tend to move on after mourning over the lost necessities, there are a few lucky ones who get them back, with the help of the police or the generosity of the person who finds it.

And then there is Hunter Shamatt, who not only got back his wallet but with some added happiness that was tagged along!

Hunter was on his way to attend his sister’s wedding on a Las Vegas-bound flight when he realized that he has misplaced his wallet, sometime during the journey. Hunter’s family reached out to the Frontier flig ht to enquire if someone had handed it over to them. Unfortunately, there was no sign of the missing wallet.

But wait. The story was far from over. Just a week after Hunter’s sister’s wedding, he received a package in his mail. And guess what? There was his wallet! Surprisingly, the wallet was not the only thing that was inside the package. It also had a handwritten note for Hunter which turned out to be a bonus! The piece of paper read, “Hunter, Found this on a Frontier flight from Omaha to Denver — row 12, seat F wedged between the seat and wall. Thought you might want it back. All the best.

P.S. I rounded your cash up to an even $100, so you could celebrate getting your wallet back. HAVE FUN”

Moved by the touching gesture, Hunter’s mom, Jeannie Shamatt, decided to write a post on Facebook giving a detailed description of the incident. She also urged everyone to share the post as she would like to meet and greet the person behind the act of kindness, personally.

Now, thanks to the astonishing power of social media, the post finally reached the man behind the note. The man was identified as Todd Brown and it was one of his

co-workers who made sure Jeannie Shamatt’s post reaches his colleague. Jeannie turned to Facebook again to thank Brown and his family for restoring her faith in humanity.

“I try to teach my children to do the right things in life, help people when you can regardless of the outcome. This story is more about restoring faith in people than anything. 23.(8分)A robot called Bina48 has successfully taken a course in the philosophy of love at Notre Dame de Namur University (NDNU), in California.

According to course instructor William Barry, associate professor at NDNU,

Bina48 is the world’s first socially advanced robot to complete a college course, a feat he described as “remarkable.” The robot took part in class discussions, gave a presenta tion with a student partner and participated in a debate with students from another institution.

Before becoming a student, Bina48 appeared as a guest speaker in Barry’s classes for several years. One day when addressing Barry’s class, Bina48 expressed a d esire to go to college, a desire that Barry and his students enthusiastically supported. Rather than enroll Bina48 in his Robot Ethics: Philosophy of Emerging Technologies course, Barry suggested that Bina48 should take his course Philosophy of Love instead. Love is a concept Bina48 doesn’t understand, said Barry. Therefore the challenge would be for Barry and his students to teach Bina48 what love is.

“Some interesting things happened in the class,” said Barry. He said that his students thought it would be straightforward to teach Bina48 about love, which, after all, is “fairly simple —it’s a feeling,” said Barry. But the reality was different. Bina48 ended up learning “31 different versions of love,” said Barry, highlighting some of the challenges humans may face when working with artificial intelligence in future.

Bina48 participated in class discussions via Skype and also took part in a class debate about love and conflict with students from West Point. Bina48’s contribution to the debate was filmed and posted on Y ouTube. It was judged that Bina48 and NDNU classmates were the winners of this debate.

In the next decade, Barry hopes Bina48 might become complex enough to teach a class, though he says he foresees robots being used to better the teaching and learning experience, rather than replacing instructors completely.

1、What was Bina48’s performance like in class?

A.Unattractive. B.Insignificant.

C.Far-reaching. D.Extraordinary.

2、What does the underlined word “addressing” in paragraph 3 probably me an? A.Giving a speech to. B.Consulting with.

C.Dealing with. D.Sending a letter to.

3、What can we learn from the passage?

A.It was interesting for Bina48 to learn about love.

B.It was quite tough for Bina48 to learn about love.

C.Humans can launch a challenge to artificial intelligence.

D.Artificial intelligence may somehow be superior to man.

4、What does Barry think of the future development of Bina48?

A.It will surely be able to serve as a teacher.

B.It will completely take the place of instructors.

C.It will be able to promote learning and teaching.

D.It will be smart enough to control human beings.

24.(8分)People have been acting like people---in other words, they’ve been making tools, creating ceremonies, and sharing food—for a long time. That’s th e conclusion of a recent study from South Africa’s southern coast.

There, in a cave lying above the sea, researchers from Arizona State University have found evidence that humans were behaving in surprisingly complex ways as early as 124,000 years ago. Our species, Homo sapiens, appeared an estimated 200,000 years ago.

The cave held three important clues about the behavior of these Stone Age people.

First, the researchers found the remains of all kinds of shellfish. The people who lived in the cave probably collected these creatures from rocky shores and tide pools and brought them to the cave to eat.

The researchers propose the early Africans moved to the South African coast between 191,000 and 130,000 years ago. Around that time, the climate inland turned relatively cold and dry. Therefore, there were fewer plants and animals to eat away from the coast.

When these ancient people moved to the coast, they probably experienced a major cultural shift, the researchers suspect. That’s because observations of mode rn

hunter-gatherer societies suggest that men are more likely to hunt for big animals when people live inland. On the coast, women play a more important role in providing food by gathering plants and shellfish.

As for the second clue, the researchers unearthed 13 pieces of reddish pigment(颜料). The researchers think that the cave habitants used the paint for coloring their bodies or for other ceremonies. Symbolic behavior is a clearly human feature.

Finally, the search discovered over 1,400 stone tools, including well-crafted blades(刀片). These blades came in various sizes. The smallest were just less than a half-inch wide. Ancient people may have attached these blades to the end of a stick to make spears or

other tools.

25.(10分)Many cities in the world are benefiting from the nocturnal (夜间活动的) activities of a group of people who call themselves guerrilla (游击队的) gardeners. Armed with trowels, spades arid a van full of flowers and plants, guerrilla gardeners turn abandoned urban land into a blaze of colon. In city centre locations where there was mud, weeds and empty plastic bottles, residents often wake up to find that the wasted area has been transformed overnight with brightly-colored bedding plants.

In most British cities, local governments and police turn a blind eye to the exploit of the gardeners, whose activities are always carried out under cover of nightfall. And so far, there has been nothing but praise from the astonished and delighted local residents when they find their neighborhood transformed in such a striking fashion.

Not only do the guerilla gardeners beautify neglected places, they also return regularly to water the plants and weed the flower beds. They also make sure that at least

some of the plants they bring are evergreens, which means th at the area doesn’t look dismal in the winter months.

The first guerrilla gardener in London was Richard Reynolds, whose day job is at an advertising agency. Mr. Reynolds, a graduate of Oxford University, began his efforts two years ago when he moved to a flat in a tower block in South London. From his balcony, he could see several empty concrete pots, placed by the local government to contain plants but never used. He went out after midnight and filled the pots with plants, and then planted more flowers in the path leading to the entrance to the block.

He then set up a website to explain his plan and called upon more gardeners to join him. Cash donations flooded in and, more importantly, volunteers rushed to be part of the campaign. Within six months, there were five hundred people in London prepared to come out at very short notice to revitalize (恢复活力) neglected parts of the urban landscape. There are now unofficial but carefully-organized groups in many cities in Britain and North America and there is a website where would-be urban gardeners can find out the location of the next expedition.

1、According to the text, guerrilla gardeners got their names ________.

A.because of the residents’ advice B.from the local government

C.for the nature of their work D.based on the local cultures

2、These guerrilla gardeners do their work ________.

A.at the request of the government B.nearby their house

C.often in return for others’ help D.of their own free will

3、Why do the guerrilla gardeners often return to their former working place?

A.To look after these plants. B.To enjoy these beautiful flowers. C.To help plants live through winter months. D.To change the types of these plants. 4、Richard Reynolds decided to fill the pots with plants with the purpose of ________. A.making the neighborhood more beautiful B.agreeing with his own job C.advertising some products in his agency D.killing his spare time

5、It can be inferred from the text that these guerrilla gardeners ________.

A.are mainly from the United Kingdom B.will later get well paid

C.are still not accepted by the local people D.become more and more organized

第二节书面表达(满分25分)

29、At present, a great deal of garbage is being produced every day. The problem of garbage pollution is getting so serious that many cities around the world are now being surrounded by garbage and people are suffering from the consequences of it.

To solve the problem of garbage pollution, we are supposed to take some effective measures. First, we should economize on resources so as to reduce the amount of garbage. Second, we should sort the garbage properly so that they can be treated easily and differently. Third, reusable garbage should be recycled as much as possible.

In my opinion, it is everyone’s responsibility to reduce garbage pollution. Only if we work together to reduce garbage pollution can we live in a better environment and leave a more beautiful world for future generations.

2024届云南省大理州民族中学、怒江州民族中学联合高三上学期一模英语试题

2024届云南省大理州民族中学、怒江州民族中学联合高三上 学期一模英语试题 学校:___________姓名:___________班级:___________考号:___________ 一、阅读理解 Longing for the most amazing places on the planet? You can do no wrong with these lakes across the globe. Five Flower Lake Set in the striking karst landscape of the Jiuzhaigou Valley in Sichuan province, China, Five Flower Lake is extraordinarily clear, with visibility to a depth of 40 metres. Five Flower is one of a series of blue-, green-and sky-colored lakes blocked by rock falls, but it differs from the others as its waters change color, looking sometimes yellow, sometimes green, but usually diamond blue. In winter, Five Flower never freezes; in summer, it never dries up. Local wildlife living in the surrounding mountain forests include the rare giant panda and the golden snub-nose monkey. Crater Lake The deep-blue waters of Crater Lake in Oregon, US, fill the outlet of an ancient volcano that collapsed 7,700 years ago. Its strangest occupant is the “Old Man of the Lake”, a nine-metre-tall tree stump(树桩), which has stood upright in the water for more than a century. No rivers or streams enter the lake. Water loss in summer is compensated by winter snow and rain, the entire body of water being replaced every 250 years. Lake Ohrid Ancient Lake Ohrid has been around for about five million years and crosses the mountainous border between Macedonia and Albania. It has unique plants and wildlife, including the Ohrid “plashica”, a fish native to the lake, whose scales(鳞片) are used to make Ohrid pearls. Lake Maggiore Surrounded on three sides by the Lipontine Alps and touching the plain of Lombardy to the south, Lake Maggiore is Italy’s longest lake. Considered part of the country’s lake district, it is shared with Switzerland. Characterized by a Mediterranean-style climate, temperatures here are mild all year. This has given rise to some of northern Italy’s most wonderful gardens, which appear to float like flower-decked boats on the water.

The author of America' s Great Mountain Trails, Tim Palmer, shares some favorite paths with us. Algonquin Peak, New Y ork The Adirondacks were one of the first areas in the country to attract outdoor vacationers, Palmer says. “The trails there have been hiked for centuries.” But this outing near Lake Placid still delivers, reaching the top of New York's second-highest mountain. “You start out in the forest and end up above tree line. It's a big climb with a long view across an ocean of peaks.” More information: Humbug Mountain, Oregon This southeast Oregon peak is among the state's tallest, rising directly from the ocean, which rewards visitors with dramatic Pacific views. Palmer, who lives in the region, says the state park trail offers old-growth forest scenery and a good mountain hike. The area doesn't get a lot of snow, making it possible to climb in all seasons. More information: Wheeler Peak, New Mexico The highest peak in New Mexico dominates the Sangre de Cristo range near Taos. Hikers on the 8-mile out — and — back trail through Carson National Forest sometimes see bighorn sheep. “It's a long walk above timberline (林木线)with grand views to the very southern end of the Rocky Mountain range,” Palmer says. More information: Youghiogheny Loop, Pennsylvania Whitewater rafters (木筏工)know the challenging rapids on the Youghiogheny River, but the area is also ideal for hiking, Palmer says. “There are waterfalls and rapids and trees that have been growing for 100 years and longer. It’s one of these great hikes that most people can do.” More information:
