Points Of Information*

I.

Definition of points of information Notes

A. During their opponents’ speeches, debaters may get the opportunity to

raise a point.

B. The opportunity to raise a point occurs only with the permission of the opponent who is speaking.

C. These points, questions or arguments,

are called points of information. II.

Raising points of information A. The debaters for the government team may request points of information from

members of the opposition teams and vice versa. B. POIs can be requested after the 1st

minute of a speech and prior to the last minute of the speech. C. To request POIs, a debater rises and raises their hand. They may politely

say something like “point of

information please,” or “on that point.” D.

If the speaker accepts the point of

information, then the debater then has

a maximum of 15 seconds to make the point.

Accepting and refusing points of information A.

The debater giving the speech has the authority to accept or to refuse the POI. B. To refuse a point of information, the debater may say something like “No thank you” or “not at this time,” or may simply use a hand gesture to indicate the person should take return to their seat. C. To accept a point of information, simply say something like, “your point please.” D. Debaters should quickly indicate whether or not the point will be

accepted. Debaters should not leave the opponent standing too long. E. The debater should finish their sentence prior to accepting the point. F. Debaters should accept at least 1 and probably no more than 3 points during their speech. G.

Accept points judiciously. Accept points in appropriate places during the speech. Don’t accept multiple points

from the same person. IV. Responding to Points of Information A. Respond to the point immediately. B. Respond to the point confidently. C. Don’t allow the opponent to follow up

with additional questions.

接受与拒绝质询陈词者有权接受或拒绝质询如果拒绝质询,陈词者可以说“对不起,不接受”或者说“稍等”。也可以简单地以一个“请坐下”的手势表示,

比如向下挥手。如果接受质询,陈词者可以说“请质询”陈词者应尽快明示是否接受质询陈词者宜先把正在说的句子说完了再接受质询陈词者在一次发言中以接受一到三个质询为宜明智而审慎地接受质询。

自信地回应不要让对方补充提问(不要让对方把质询变成对话)
