Happiness is for everyone. In fact, happiness is always around you if you put your heart into it. When you are in trouble at school, your friends will help you; when you study hard at your lessons, your parents are always taking good care of your life and your health; when you get success, your friends will congratulate you; when you do something wrong, people around you will help you to correct it. And when you do something good to others, you will feel happy, too. All these are your happiness. If you notice a bit of them, you can find that happiness is always around you.② Happiness is not the same as money, it's a feeling of your heart . When you are poor, you can also be very happy, because you have something else that can't be bought with money. When you meet with difficulties, you can say loudly you are very happy, because you have more chances to challenge ( 挑战) yourself. Waste can be seen everywhere in the school. Some students ask for more food than they can eat and others often forget to turn off the lights when they leave the classroom. They say they can afford these things. But I don’t agre e with them.
Waste can bring a lot of problems. Although China is rich in some resources (资源), we are short of others, for example, fresh water. It is reported that we will have no coal or oil to use in 100 years. So if we go on wasting our resources, what can we use in the future and where can we move? Think about it. (1) I think we should say no to the students who waste things every day. Everybody should stop wasting as soon as possible.
In our everyday life, we can do many things to prevent (阻止) waste from happening, for example, turn off the water taps when we finish washing, turn off the lights when we leave the classroom, try not to order more food than we need, and so on. History is the story of us, human beings. Everyone who has lived and everything that has happened are part of history. But history is not only what happened in the past. The word also means the study of the past, through old written records and other kinds of facts.
(A) Why do we study history? One reason is that we enjoy it. A good story is even better if it is true, and history is full of good stories, though they can be terrible too. A more serious reason is to understand ourselves and the world we live in. To understand events happening now, we need to know their causes. (B) We cannot understand the present if we know nothing about the past. History helps to explain why things are the way they are.
Of course, history books cannot tell us everything about the past, not even everything that is recorded. A history of the world has to pick out the people and events that changed the world.
Since ancient times, great civilizations (文明) have appeared in different countries and regions (地区). Usually, only three or four existed (存在) at the same time. While they lasted, they changed the lives not only of their own people, but of their neighbors too.
Pla ying is serous business for children. In fact, it’s what they do best! Ask them why they do it, and kids will probably say, “Because it’s fun!” But it’s much more than that. It’s also good for them.
Studies show that from birth babies begin learning through play. (A) They use their five senses to get know their new world. Touching allows them to discover how different things feel. Brightly colored toys and clothing help develop a baby’s sense of sight (视觉).
When small children choose which toy to play with, they begin developing their abilities in making decisions.
Children love toys that allow them to use their imagination. Sometimes an empty box is more fun than a high-tech toy. That’s because a box can become anything a child imagines it to be.
Crayons, paints and Play-Doh (彩色塑泥) are also good because they allow children to crate. Traditional building blocks teach important pre-math skills like problem-solving.
Playing doesn’t become any less important once children start school. (B) Many valuable (有价值的) lessons about life are learned on the school playground. Kids learn how

Last Friday, after doing all the family shopping in town, I wanted to have a rest before catching the train. I bought a newspaper and some chocolate and went into the station coffee shop. It was a cheap self-service place with long tables to sit at. I put my heavy bag down on the floor, put the newspaper and chocolate on the table and then went to get a cup of coffee.
When I came back with the coffee, there was someone sitting in the next seat. It was a boy with dark glasses and old clothes, and his hair was coloured bright red at the front. He had started to eat my chocolate!
Naturally, I was rather uneasy about him, but I didn’t want to have any trouble. I just looked down at the front page of the newspaper, tasted my coffee and took a bit of chocolate. (A) The boy looked at me closely. Then he took a second piece of my chocolate. I could hardly believe it. (B) Stil l I didn’t say anything to him. When he took a third piece, I felt more angry than uneasy. I thought, “Well, I shall have the last piece.” And I got it.
The boy gave me a strange look, then stood up. As he left he shouted out, “There’s something wrong with that woman!” E veryone looked at me, but I did not want to quarrel with the boy, so I kept quiet. I did not realize that I had made a mistake until I finished my coffee and was ready to leave. My face turned red when I saw my unopened chocolate under the newspaper. The c hocolate that I had been eating was the boy’s!
There lived a lawyer in a town. The lawyer was very clever but stingy(吝啬). People all knew that the lawyer never paid others when he asked them to do something for him.
One day the lawyer’s wife was badly ill. The lawyer asked a doctor for help. The doctor was ready to come to see the sick woman and tried his best to cure (医治)her. But the doctor stopped before he went into the lawyer’s house, for the doctor knew that very often the lawyer did not pay others. Th e doctor said to the lawyer, “But if I cure your wife, I’m afraid you will not pay me.”
“Sir,” answered the lawyer, “here (A) I have a lot of money. Whether you cure or kill my wife, I will give you some money.”
The doctor was glad to hear that and went into the house. The woman was dying. The doctor tried everything possible to save her, but still she died in the end. He told the lawyer that he was sorry, and then asked for pay. “(B) Did you kill my wife?” asked the lawyer. “Of course I didn’t,” said the doctor. “Well, did you cure my wife?” the lawyer asked again. “You know that was impossible,” answered the doctor.
