Thomas Hardy’s Tess of the D’urbervilles reflected his real society. Hardy succeeded in portraying the image of heroine Tess and revealing the hypocritical ethics and morals of bourgeois society.

• Tess does not want to be seduced by Alec and she just has no power to defense herself. So she lost her purity. Angle also does wrong thing and it even serious than Tess’s crime, but he has not been blamed for it. Why it is always ruin the good? Thousands of years of history have shown that women have always been treated unequally in every country.

• Tess Durbeyfield — The protagonist, eldest daughter in a poor rural working family; a fresh, welldeveloped country girl who looks markedly more mature than she is.
Outline
• Tess Durbeyfield is a 16-year-old simple country girl. In a chance ,Tess meets Alec d’Urberville, who finds himself attracted to Tess. Alec seduces and rapes Tess. Tess returns home, gives birth to a son, but died for illness.
• He rapes Tess when she is no more than sixteen or seventeen years old, and later pursues her relentlessly.
• He persuades her to see the reality in her relationship with Angel and convinces her to become his mistress.
• Tess returns to Alec while Angel returns from Brazil to look for Tess. Tess kills Alec and stays with Angel for 7 days and then polices takes Tess away.
OUTLINE
• Tess makes another journey away from home, and she meets and falls in love with Angel Clare. After the wedding, Tess and Angel confess their pasts to each other. Tess forgives Angel for his past indiscretions, but Angel cannot forgive Tess for having a child with another man. Angel going to Brazil for a year and Tess going back home.
