它表现为：受传者对信息反应的速度远远比不上信息传播的速度；大众媒介中的信息量大大高于受众所能消费、承受或需要的信息量；大量无关的没用的信息严重干扰了受众对相关信息的准确分辨和正确的选择。
信息浪费。
由于真正有价值的信息被大量的无用信息所淹没，求知的人不得不耗费大量的时间和精力来对待信息洪水，这种大海捞针式的结果是，经常无奈地让一些有用的信息与大量的无用信息一起从身边流走，从而造成了信息浪费。
信息疾病。
面对信息量极度的膨胀，人们受到信息爆炸、信息超载造成的一系列心理压力。
引发了一些列的疾病：有的手忙脚乱，焦虑不安、情绪暴躁等。
信息匮乏的表现
所谓信息匮乏是指大众传媒提供的巨量信息中严重缺乏受众所需要的有价值的、能了解事情真相的、对自己有用的信息。
它是信息爆炸的伴生现象，也是信息爆炸的负面效果。
主要表现在以下几个方面
真相信息匮乏。
信息有的是显性有的隐形，有的是浅层的有的是深层的，大众传播往往乐于采集、传播那些显性的浅层次的表象信息，特别是“引人瞩目“新闻事件，而不愿意深入挖掘隐藏在这类事件背后的深层原因和社会背景。
重要信息匮乏。
许多媒介只看重自己的经济效益，他们日益重视的是具有巨大市场价值的共同信息，所以共同信息同质化和爆炸化，只会导致重要信息的日益匮乏，因为重要信息没有多少市场价值
知识信息匮乏。
从总体上看，知识供应总量一直在逐步增长，特别是现代科技知识更是增长迅猛。
但是它们既没有一般信息增长的速度快，也没有一般信息的供应量大，而社会科学知识的增长一直萎靡不振。
思想信息匮乏。
提供的信息很多只追求量的提升，知识含量低，缺乏思想性。
信息匮乏的原因
人的惰性，受众不想花太多的时间收集知识信息、重要信息、真相信息，而显性信息、表象信息、一般信息不仅省钱还不用花太多的时间容易得到。
市场取向。
一般来说共同的信息、表现信息、一般信息能满足多数受众的当前需要，较有市场的价值，容易获得较大的经济效益，因此往往是媒介生产和营销的主要的市场取向。
而真相信息、重要信息、知识信息、思想信息只能适应少数人的需要，市场份额不够缺乏经济效益，因此媒介不太感兴趣传播。
传受失衡。
大众传媒的设备日益现代化、集群化、高速化，媒介机构日益增多，专业化分工日益精细。
在大众传媒完全主导信息的情况下，广大的受众所能的只有打开开关，等待
信息的涌入，想寻找重要的知识性、思想性已变的十分的困难。
这是一个“信息虽发达，知识却贫乏”的时代
当代社会信息爆炸同时却知识匮乏的现象。
当代社会是一个信息爆炸的社会，但信息爆炸并不意味着知识爆炸，因为：从信息和知识的含义看，两者并不是一回事，信息是形成知识的原始素材，知识是信息发展的高级形式，是人们理解了数据和信息的意思后，以高度活用的形式编排记忆的系统信息；信息是由“什么”、“何时”、“何地”、“谁”等要素构成，知识是以“怎么办”、“为什么”的形式来表述的，因此信息爆炸未必就是知识爆炸。
知识匮乏并不意味着知识供应总量低于过去，也不意味着知识增长速度放慢，而表现在一些不平衡现象上，即信息与知识的增长失衡、自然科学知识和社会科学知识的增长失衡、知识生产与知识接受严重失衡。
由此可见，我们的确开始进入一个“信息爆炸”的社会，但未必是一个“知识爆炸”的社会。
换句话说，由于人类越来越不重视读书，挫伤了知识生产者和传播者的积极性，带来了知识匮乏的效应。
“知识爆炸”的说法，只适合用来描述当今大量出现的科技知识的现象，而无法对大众媒介供应信息的总量中知识性信息只占十分微小的比例、社科知识严重缺乏和个人拥有知识日益减少的现象作出合理解释。
因此，这可以说是一个“信息虽发达，知识却贫乏”的时代。
