Lesson 3: Get started with your speaking part of IELTS

1. Length of IELTS Speaking Test is 11 to 14 minutes. It contains three Parts:

❖Part 1 General Questions

❖Part 2 Describe certain topics

❖Part 3 Analytical Discussion

2. Understand the criteria. The four Marking Criteria:

❖Pronunciation-Accuracy and Variety

❖Lexical Resources-Range of V ocabulary

❖Grammar-Range and Accuracy

❖Fluency and Coherence-length, logical and appropriate signposting.

3. General questionsThe four key Questions 4 to 5 minutes:

❖ —-What is your fully name? or Can you tell me your full name? —-My name is QIAN LIU.

❖ —What should I call you? Or Do you have an English name? —-You can call me Jack. Or Yes, my English name is Jack. ❖Where are you from?I come from Shandong province which is in east of china. Or I’m local person and I was born in Beijing.

❖ —-May I see your ID card? —-Of course, here your are.

4. Question Types in Part 1

Have you ever ridden a bike?

❖ Did you learn to play sport when you were child?

❖Do you like playing sports?

❖Do you think that children should have a pet?

❖When did you start learning English?

Part two: Warming UP

❖Are a student or do you work?

❖Do you like watching TV?

❖Do you enjoy the advertisement on television? ❖What is your favorite season?

❖What is your favorite subject at school?

1. Answer Strategy

Do questions-simple answer is Yes or No, for example, Yes/No, I like/dislike watching TV. I think it is very interesting. (Band 5)

❖Well, I think I do like watching TV in my spare time, because I have nothing to do but watching TV and besides, I hate outdoor activities.

❖what or How-I like winter best. I enjoy the snow in winter. It’s so beautiful. Well, I would say summer, Actually, the summer in Beijing is very hot and I mean it is scorching! But in summer, my friends and I can just hang out together in places like malls or Starbucks. (Band 6-7)

2. From positive to negative

❖Dancing is my biggest passion in life.(最喜欢）❖I’m enchanted by…….

Part three : Let’s talk about Names

1 Does your name have any special meaning?

No it doesn't. To me it's just a couple of sounds put together. But ah...I know many names were attached a lot of important meanings.

2. When Chinese people name their children, are there any special customs that are followed?

People have always showed particular concern for the meaning, appearance and sound when they name children. It is expected that a name given by the father or grandfather carries their wish, hope, pursuit of aspiration, generation, etc. This name must be rich in the name-giver's wish or intention and it should also be pleasant in form and sound.

3. Is there any special ceremony when babies are given their names?

There is no such a tradition in China. It depends on babies' parents. It is a good chance for families to get together and see the lovely new born baby.

4. How are Chinese names and Western names different?

Chinese names always tend to have historic or idiomatic meanings in it while Western names sound natural and casual. If they are Christian, they may name their child after someone in the Bible-John, Luke: Simon. Nlicah, Rebecca, etc. If they are Catholic, they may choose to name their child after a particular saint.

5. What name do people at home call you?

Just my name, sometimes my Dad called me "son", my mom called me "babe" as nickname.
