• The Hippie movement was very positive in some ways, but also led to some people who did not believe in the movement as much as they did the drugs. • We are going to watch some of the movie Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. • It tells the true story of two crazy hippies. One is a journalist, one is a lawyer. • It is very accurate in the way it depicts the effects of drug use.
– The romantic movement was a response to the industrial revolution – In the same way, these countercultural movements we will look at are all reactions to parts of society.
– Here we mean a very significant, visible event that is large and continues for a period of time.
• The term was first used in the news media during the 1960s and 1970s.
Hippies
• Comes from the word ‘Hip’ which meant cool. • Hippies had several defining features:
– Dressing very differently from most people at that time. – Emphasis on peace, love and sexual freedom. – Use of drugs, particularly cannabis, LSD and psychotropic mushrooms.
– Counter – counter means opposing. – So counter culture means something to do with an opposing culture.
• We look at the ‘Hippy’ movement in the 60s and 70s. • Actually, the romantic movement we have already looked at is an example of counterculture.
Counterculture
• It is a sociological term. • Describes values and norms of a cultural group, that run counter to those of the mainstream. • It is the cultural equivalent of political opposition. • Counterculture of course exists all the time in many societies.
