1 IntroductionThe film “Scraping Therapy” reflects the difference of value and culture views between western society and orient society. China society has been receiving impact of Confucianism for thousands years. Confucianism is known as paying regard to human relationship and ethic. Piety, courtesy and localism are most important ethic. But in Western culture which is more emphasis on individualism, independence and equality. So conflicts in culture and value are unavoidable. These conflicts have shown in the story. In Chinese culture, physical punishment is commonly used by Chinese family. They think this will help to growing up. But in western society it is absolutely forbidden. Any abusing children were viewed as illegal conduct. As to show respect to friends, Da Tong Xu punished his own son physically in front of friends. But this was misinterpreted as violence by his foreign friends. This is a misunderstanding in culture between East and West.In this film, grandpa who had living in China for many years treated his grandson with a widespread treatment in Chinese folk named “Scraping Therapy”. This is a very ancient Chinese medicine therapy, and is handed down from one generation to another which has thousands of years of history in China. In the United States, this is an unfounded treatment. When the child gets sick, hospital is the only correct choice. Scraping Therapy in the story led to great conflict and misunderstanding. There are many other culture and value conflicts performed in the film, such as conflict between Chinese traditional culture and Western industrial civilization, conflict of the education of their children’s daily habits and so forth. How to avoid the tragedy of the story? We must strengthen the East-West cultural exchange and learning, and only with respect to different cultures and inclusive will it bepossible to avoid the culture and values of conflict.2 Comparison of Chinese and American values based on the movieChinese and Americans possess different values about success. At the beginning of the movie, XU Da-tong is rewarded as the best designer of video games by the company. When he is requested to make a short speech, he mentions that he would especially extend thanks to his boss and all of his colleagues. This is a typical Chinese speech made after being successful. They attribute their success to other’s help and cooperation. It is what Chinese people usually do on that occasion. In China, relationship plays a critical role in people’s lives. Many Chinese people get ahead with the help of their family background and friends. Therefore, they are used to extending their gratitude to other people even though their success has little to do with some of them. They seldom say that they succeed because of their own ability and hard work. Nevertheless, Americans hold different values in this aspect. Americans are more likely to express pride in themselves and their accomplishment rather than to express pride in their group, company, family or hometown.3 Family Education Conflict3.1. Chinese Family Education ViewIn China, when children do something wrong, parents will scold and beat children as a punishment. Chinese family education is famous for strictness. There are Chinese old sayings can show the strictness, such as “to feed without teaching is the father’s fault”,“spare the rod, spoil the son”, just as the words Datong’s father s aid: “打是亲,骂是爱(to scold and to beat a naughty boy is due to love)”. It is also common for parents, especially parents in the rural areas, to leave their children alone at home, Chinese parents are always busy with their jobs or farming, and there is not enough time for them to take care of their children, so they have to leave their children at home. It is not surprising at all in the rural areas to find children lying on the floor with fly flying around them. Nowadays, with the popularization of the television, it is safer and more convenient for parents to leave children at home.3.2 American Family Education ViewIn America, parents never hit their children for their mistakes .They do not think it will do any help to scold and beat them. It will be more useful to encourage them to stand up again than to scold and beat them, which will only discourage their confidence. And most importantly, it is illegal to beat children. In America, it is also illegal to leave their children alone at home.3.3 The Reason for Their Different ViewsThe reason for the differences between Chinese parents and American parents is that they each have different role orientation. Chinese parents consider their children as their own property. They think the children are affiliated to them. The children can only grow up under their control. Most of the Chinese parents play the role of arranging children’s fate. This kind of relationship is obviously unfair. However, American parents regard their children as free and independent individuals since their children are born. They put their children in an equal position. They pay much attention to the equal communication and respect children’s ideas and needs. In the process of their children’s growth, they give them guidance and help.1 Hence, Chinese parents have rights to scold and beat the children when they do something wrong and to leave them alone at home, while it is illegal to do such things in America.3.4 Family Education Conflict Reflected in Gua ShaIn Gua Sha, Datong’s son Denis hit his friend Kunlan’s son Paul, Datong asks Denis to apologize to Paul, but Denis refuses to say sorry to Paul, then Datong hit Denis on the face in front of the public. In Chinese eye, it is perfectly justified to do so because they think they do this for children’s good, and to hit children is to love them and to make them become a useful person. Chinese parents is always educating their own children first when they deal with the quarrel or fight among children, while American parents pay attention to the truth. That’s why Datong first asked Denis to apologize to Paul without finding who is wrong or right. However, in America, parents are just the children’s keepers. They can’t go too far scolding their children, let alone beat them. That’s why Datong’s f riend Kunlan is startled when he sees Datong hit Denis on the face. There is another typical plot can embody the different family education views of Chinese and American. When Datong’s father stays at the station, and Jane is at work, Datong has to leave Denis alone at home in order to pick his father home. When Datong is on his way to the police station, he calls Jane. Here is the conversation:Jane: Datong, where are you? I called twice, and no answer.Datong: I was at the police station.Jane: What? What happened?Datong: Dad has a…Jane: Is he ok?Datong: Yes, he’s met up with an emergency.Jane: where is Denis? Is he with you?Datong: He’s home, I mean he’s sleep.Jane: You mean you left Denis at home all by himself?Datong: Oh, Jesus! You called home.Datong’s father: Datong, you are driving too fast. Isn’t it breaking the law?Datong: Dad, I left Denis alone at home. I’ve already broken the law. From the conversation, it is known that it is illegal to leave children at home.3.4.1 Different Views of Interpersonal RelationshipDealing with the interpersonal relationship, American culture pays attention to individualism, while Chinese culture pays attention to collectivism. The following statements by Ting-Toomey are very clear:Individualism emphasizes the importance of individual identity over group identity, individual rights over group rights and individual needs over group needs, which gives priority to individual, advocates individual benefits and individual freedom. Americans think that everyone has the freedom to do everything he wants as long as what he does will not interrupt others’ benefit, and he will be responsible for what he does. In the contrast, collectivism attaches importance to “we” identity over the“I” i dentity, group rights over individual rights and in-group-oriented needs over individual want and desires. Collectivism promotes relational interdependence, in-group harmony, and in-group collaborative spirit. Not harming collective benefit is the precondition of what one does and what one says. When Chinese deal with the relationship of individual benefit and collective benefit, they think more of collective benefit. Sometimes, they will try their best to realize collective benefit at the expense of individual benefit. Chinese are always required to follow rules docilely and repress themselves. This kind of self-repression makes American scholars think that Chinese culture as I-less culture. Chinese culture emphasizes the full devotion to the collectivity and ignores individuality, while American culture gives a limited devotion to the collectivity. In Gua Sha, when Jane gave birth to Denis at the hospital, Datong did not accompany her at the hospital because he had a meeting at the company. This kind of choice is understandable in China, where collectivity outweighs individuality, but is unacceptable and unforgivable in American society. And this is not only the conflict between collectivism and individualism, but also the conflict in interpersonal relationship view.3.4.2 Family Conflict Reflected in Gua ShaFamily is the most basic element and carrier in the Chinese culture. Chinese family stresses the love of family and the love of consanguinity. They think that dog doesn’t eat dog(虎毒不食子),so when the Children Welfare Bureau accuses Datong of child abuse, he thinks it incredible and ridiculous. He says to his wife Jane, “A father loves his son. That’s the way where it works. Why do I have to prove my love, make up speeches? What the hellare w e doing, Jane? It’s turning upside down. Everything is turning upside down!” However, it is acceptable in America, which is a place pays more attention to the truth and evidence. Filial piety is also a very important virtue in Chinese family. In the movie, Datong lies to the judge that he is the one who does Gua Sha to Denis in order to protect his father who is the real one does Gua Sha to Denis. He thinks that if he tells the judge it is his father does Gua Sha to Denis, he sells his own father out, and then he will not be a filial son. However, Americans will never understand the concept of filial piety in Chinese culture. 3.4.3 Family Conflict Reflected in Gua ShaIn Gua Sha, Datong asks his friend as well as boss Kunlan to be his counsel in the hearing, while Kunlan is just a property right lawyer, who knows little about family law. Kunlan suggests Datong to find a professional family law lawyer, but Datong insists on asking him to be his counsel. The only reason is that Kunlan is his friend, and he trusts him. The following is the conversation between Datong and his friend Kunlan:Kunlan: …Family law is a very special land. It’s short time to ask a continuous day of hearing so that you can get someone who is qualified.Datong: Joh n, you know how much I love Denis! You’re best lawyer I know and my best friend. I mean who is ready to help.Kunlan: But I am just a property right lawyer, I knew little about family law.Datong: Denis is my best creation. I have a property right over him, right? They made a mistake, and all that you should do is to point it out and I can take Denis home. I’m counting on you!Take another example, in the second hearing, Kunlan tells the judge that Datong once hit Denis. Kunlan’s attestation lead the case t o be taken over by the formal court, Datong is very angry and decides to quit the job, thinking that Kunlan’s behavior betrays friend. Look at the conversation between Datong and his friend as well as boss Kunlan:Datong: I won’t talk to you!Kunlan: I am so sorry. I’m trying to tell you. I couldn’t lie, they knew everything. Datong: I don’t have the time and intonation to hear you to justify your action. I just want to get my son home and get my life back.Kunlan: And that’s why more than ever you need thi s job!Datong: I consider you as my friend, but you sold me out. How dare you expect me to work with you again?Kunlan: I just told the truthIn China, loyalty to friends is very important, while Americans are more rational. They emphasize the truth and know exactly what they should do. In a word, Chinese friendship focuses on human feelings, American friendship focuses on truth and reason.3家庭教育冲突3.1。

英美影视文化差异英语作文
英美影视文化差异英语作文In the realm of film and television, the cultural differences between the United States and the United Kingdom are as vivid as the characters they portray. While both nations have contributed immensely to the global entertainment industry, their approaches to storytelling, humor, and social commentary offer unique insights into their respective cultures.Narrative Style and PacingAmerican films and TV shows are often characterized by their fast-paced narratives and high-stakes drama. The "Hollywood ending" is a staple, with a clear resolution and a tendency towards optimism. In contrast, British productions may take a more measured approach, with a slower build-up and a greater emphasis on character development. British storytelling often leaves room for ambiguity and can end on a more contemplative note.HumorThe use of humor is a significant point of divergence. American comedies frequently employ slapstick, puns, and aself-deprecating style of humor that is overt and designed to elicit immediate laughter. British humor, on the other hand,is often more subtle, dry, and relies heavily on wit, sarcasm, and understatement. This difference in comedic style reflectsthe broader cultural tendencies towards directness in American culture versus a more reserved and nuanced approach in British culture.Class and Social CommentaryBritish TV and film often delve into class distinctions and social hierarchies, reflecting the country's history and the importance of social class in everyday life. Programs like "Downton Abbey" and "The Crown" are prime examples of this focus. American media, while not devoid of social commentary, tends to emphasize the "American Dream" and the idea ofsocial mobility, often through narratives of success and personal triumph over adversity.Production Values and AestheticsIn terms of production, American films and TV series are known for their high production values, with big budgets, extensive special effects, and a glossy finish. British productions, while also high-quality, often prioritize a more realistic and grounded aesthetic, which can be seen in the use of actual British locations and a focus on period detail in historical dramas.Characterization and DialogueCharacters in American shows are typically larger than life, with distinct personalities and clear motivations. Dialogueis often quick and snappy, designed to keep the audience engaged and entertained. British characters, by comparison, are more likely to be complex and nuanced, with dialogue that can be more naturalistic and reflective of everyday speech.Influence and Global ReachBoth cultures have had a significant impact on the global entertainment landscape. American media has a broad global reach, influencing cultures worldwide with its storytelling techniques and cultural exports. British media, while perhaps not as pervasive, has a strong following and is often associated with quality and sophistication. In conclusion, the differences between British and American film and television cultures are as diverse as the nations themselves. Each offers a unique perspective on storytelling, humor, and social issues, enriching the global cultural dialogue and providing audiences with a variety of narratives to enjoy. Understanding these differences can enhance the appreciation for the art of film and television and the cultural nuances they embody.。

中美文化差异,英语作文中美文化差异,英语作文篇一:中西文化差异比较(英文)The difference between chinese and western cultureWith the rapidly challging word, people throughout the world have found it increasingly necessary to minimize the rate of misunderstanding due to miscommunication in their contacts with another. In the oast most human beings were born, lived, and died within a limited geoographical area, never encountering people of other cultural backgrounds. It might be said that technological advances have been most effective in creating the borderless word, the global community. As our world shrinks and its inhabitants become interdependent, people from remot cultures increasingly come into contact on a daily basis. It is no longer hard to find situations in which membes of ince isolared groups of people. Now these people may live thousands of miles away or right next door to each other. So all the people are faced with the challenge of understand this world. So when the east meet west, there are many problems. Some problems are listed as follows.First of all, the way of eating. All huaman beings have certain basic needs. Our fundamental needs for things that keep us alive. This is the physioligical need. All individuals must eat in order to survive. But what people eat, when they eat, and the manners in which they eat are all patterned by culture. No society views everything in its environment that is edible and might provide nurishment as food. Americans eat oysters but not snail. The French eat snails but not locusts. The Jews eat fish but not pork. The Hindus eat pork but not beef. The Russiand eat beef but notsnake. We all have ideas about what kinds of food are good to eat. We also have ideas about what kinds of food are bad to eat. As a result, people from one culture often think the food that people from another culture eat are disgusting or nauseating. Dislike is not the only reason why some culture will not eat a certain food. In some clture, certain foods are taboo. Sometimes the food taboos may be so strong thrat just the thought of eating forbidden foods can cause an indivdual to feel ill. We can also find culture difference in way of bring up children treating the early, greeting each other, saying and spending money before other people do in everyday, but in some English-speaking countries, people do not agree with us. We chinese may enjoy something that is not usually consider as edible by the English-speaking people. Generally we perfer to have thing hot and much emphasis on the taste. We eat from one plate when we are eating with others, and we like to seat one by one, and in the shape of a round. On the opposite, some English-speaking contries, most of the people like to seat in two rows, two people face to face. They have their own plate. On the aspect of table manners, there are many differences between chinese and English-speaking people. For example, in some Englishi-speaking countries, Bread plates are to the left of the main plate, beverage glasses are to the right. Salad fork, knife and soup spoon are further from themain plate than the main course knife, fork and spoon. When eating bread rolls, break off a piece before buttering. Use the knife only to butter the bread, not to cut it. They should not start eating before your host does or instructs to do so. At larger meals, it is considered okay to start eating once others have been served. When finished, place the knife and fork together at five o’clockwith the fork on the left. It is considered rude to answer the telephone at the table. If need to take an urgent call, excuse self and go outside. Try to eat all the food you are served. But in China, the table manners are different. Chinese traditionally eat rice from a small bowl held in the left hand. The rice bowl is raised to the mouth and the rice pushed into the mouth using the chopsticks. Some Chinese find it offensive to scoop rice from the bowl using a spoon. If rice is served on a plate, as is more common in the West, it is acceptable and more practical to eat it with a fork or spoon. The thumb must always beabove the edge of the bowl. The host should always make sure the guests drinks are sufficiently full. One should not pour for ones self, but should offer to pour for a neighbor. When your drink is being poured, you should say "thank youand tap fingers on the table to show appreciation. When people wish to clink drinks together in the form of a cheer, it is important to observe that younger members should clink the edge of their drink below the edge of an elder to show respect.Secondly, the way of communication. Form birth to death, communication plays an integral part in our life. There are some language problems, including the different styles of using language such as direct, indirect; expansive, succinct; argumentative, conciliatory; instrumental, harmonnizing; and so on. These different styles can lead to wrong interpretations of intent and evaluation of insincerity, aggreeiveness, deviousness, or arrogance, among other. The misinterpretation nonverbal signs and symbols such as gestures, postures, and other body movements. It is a definite communication barrier. But it is possible to learn the meanings of these observable message, usually in informal rather ways. It is more difficult tounderstand the less obvious unspoken codes of the other cultures. Language, as the carrier of culture, is created during the process of human beings’productive labor and serves as the toolof communication to convey the message between people. However, it has been endowed with magic and power in particular language acts. As the old saying goes, troubles come out of the tongue. Superstitious people think that the language itself can bring about fortune or misfortune so that taboos to restrict the use of language are created. Anyone who violates them will get punishment, whereasthose who faithfully obey the restrictions of language taboo will get protection. Furthermore, linguistic taboos change with the development of society .The paper firstly analyzes the evolution of linguistic taboo. It is indicated in the paper that linguistic taboo exists in almost every aspect of people’s life and is a universal social phenomenon in China and Britain. Both Chinese andEnglish cultures are in agreement about linguistic taboos such as pronunciation taboo, and vocabulary taboo. However, influenced by different cultural backgrounds, ideologies and the concepts of value, Chinese and English linguistic taboos also have differences, as is discussed in the paper from the aspects of taboo subjects, taboo numbers and names. At last, this paper puts forward two effective ways of avoiding taboo, that is, using euphemism and having a good knowledge of the taboo culture. And this discussion would help English learners improve their ability of cross-culturalcommunication and achieve better communicational effects. For example, During the feudal times, people were not equal tothe rulers and were suppressed by their superiors. The distinction between the upper and the lower classes was also reflected in the evaluation of the language used by them respectively. The words of upper class used were considered good and elegant while those used by the lower class were regarded as vulgar and indecent and should be avoided in the speech of ladies and gentlemen. In modern society, as a result of the development of science and technology, many natural phenomena are no longer mysterious. Human beings not only constantly improve their abilities to exploit the world where they are living through their great wisdom and knowledge, but also make efforts to explore the extraterrestrial world. Science has much more say in today’s society. Thereby, the superstitious elements in linguistic taboos decrease while those reflecting spiritual civilization increase. In short, by comparison, we can find that both Chinese and English communication reflect people’s psychology for good will, for safety and fortune and pleasantness. The Chinese and English people restrict their words and deeds through taboos, trying to keep a harmonious relationship between human and nature, or between people and society. They are a reflection of people’s pursuit offreedom and equality. The most important, the different way of family structure, family values and family education. Family structure is the big difference between east and west, traditional chinese, amony many other Asians, repect their elders and feel a deep sense of duty toward them. Children repay their parents` sacrifices by being successful and supporting them in old age. This is accepted as a natural part of life in China. In contrast, taking care of aged parents is often viewed as a tremendous burden in the English-speaking countries, where aging and family support are not honored highly. In some English-speaking countries are still extrmely family-oriented. They are dedicated to helping their children and will sacrifice greatly for their children to get an edcuation. In turn, the children are devoted to their parents, who often live nearby. Grown children who go away and leave the country for the economic reasons typically send large parts of their salary home to their parents and the rest of the family. Or in some Asia, any decisions or actions are done from family consideration, not individual desires. Peope`s behavior is judged on whether itbrings shame or pride to the family. The children are trained to rely on their families, to honor elderly people, and to fear foreigners. And many of them think that their actions in this life will influencetheir status in the next life. The way of family edcation is also the different. We all know the family education is the elementary education for children. Many serious problems have appeared in our education system in recent years. Almost everyone has realized the importance of solving these problems and many people have presented a lot of valuable suggestions. There are many types of family education in the world and each of them shows distinctive features and is closely responsive to its culture. And American family education is the most famous one among them. There are great differences in the concepts of education, methods of education and results of education between East family education and West family education. In some English-speaking countries, parents’aims are to train their children to have the ability of adapting to environmental variety and the ability of living independently.Based on this concept, most American parents emphasize more to train their children’s ability of independence once they are born. They generally believe that children’s growth must rely on their own experiences, because they think that children should form a self-supporting will and the capacity to live independently since their childhood. And the capacity comes from the training in the early age. The so-called training contains many aspects, such aswork, temper will, patience, the spirit of hard work, etc. However, the most fundamental training is the ability of adapting to hard conditions. Through the process of work, children will form the labor sense, learn some work skills and form a habit of labor. Besides, children can learn how to overcome difficulties, temper their willpower, develop their talents and skills, rich their knowledge, and form a habit of hard work and thrifty by working in hard conditions. It is just in the unconsciously process that children will obtain the independent survivability and take the responsibilities for the society. Compared with some English-speaking countries, Chinese parents have a very different concept of children’s education. Some parents in China only care about whether the children have a promising future, a good job, a good life or not. Based on these expectations, the majority of parents feel that their responsibility for their children is to create as good conditions as possible they can so that the children will not worry about anything in the future. Chinese parents would like to provide everything what they can for their children in the process of children’s growth. In short, they would like to sacrifice anything if their children can live better with their help. Therefore, in the process of children’s growth, the most important thing the parents concerning is to developing theirchildren’s intellect, except forcaring children’s daily lif e. In order to make their children have a good performance in study, become outstanding, or even become a famous person in the future, they would not let children do anything except studying. As for the children’s independence, civic awareness and their ability adapting to the society in the future, they consider little or not at all. From these aspects we can find the obvious differences of family education between America and China. When we faced with those difference between West and East, we should give some advice to solve these problems. According to the three big difference that pointed, we should find some way to deal with these problems. We can study other languages and learn to expect in nonvwebal forms and other cultural aspects. We can train ourselves to meet intercultural encounters with more attention to situation details. We can use an investigative approach rather than stereotypes and preconceptions. We can gradually expose ourselves to differences so that they become less threatening. We can even learn to lower our tension level when needed to advoid triggering defensive reactions. The overall goal should be to achieve intercultural communication competence. So the ideal solution to reduce the problems are to shareknowledge with others in communication. This is why it is easiest to communicate with other members of the same group. This is why people so often gather together socially with others who are very much like them. Since intercultural communication is communication with members of different cultual groups, and therefore, because we do not share knowledge, assumptions, values, and forms of discourse with them, we must expect thereto be problems of interpretation. We must look for these problems, anticipate where they will arise out of our differences, and then plan our aommunications to be as effective as possible. However, we have to remember that, most of the time, the different ways that are the customs of dfferent cultures are neither right nor wrong. It is simply that different people do the same tings in different manners, even though we can not understand ,we should show the respect. I believe this is the best way to make our life become more comfortable and make the world more harmonious.篇二:中美文化对比(大学英语作文)Chinese Education Is SuperiorThe born of a baby is considered as a blessing to a family, while the family education will in turn leave a brand on the baby’s future. I was born in a Chinese family with western education system. I’mwell respected. I’m growing up without any fence. But reflecting on my personal upbringing, I can tell you with certainty that Chinese Education is superior.Firstly, in a regulated Chinese family, the rules for family are the core of its education system, which could ensure children staying away from some bad habits. The rules Chua set up contributed to her children’s promising victory over long turn. But in my family, there is no such notion. At my formative year, I could stay up late enough to embrace the suise. Consequently, I always suffered from drowsiness at class. Worse still, my poor eyesight due to it has become a handicap to me. Therefore, Chinese strict rules are necessary, especially for a young child.Secondly, grade, nowadays, is an important scale to value a student’s ability. Chua never a llowed here children to get anygrade less than an A. The pressure from the parent pushed her children to absorbedly focus on their study so that they could meet withher expectation. Gradually, her children would enjoy the privilege of mastering all the subjects. By way of contrast, when I failed in my exam, my parents feigned nonchalance about the result of the exam. No blame. No punishment. I still could read my comic book like a carefree girl. Taking their infinite tolerance for granted, I didn’t even f eel sorry for my poor grades next time.Thirdly, it is common for me to complain about everything. Why there is so much homework? Why I should take the exams? Why my efforts refuse to pay off? It seemed that I couldn’t bear the whole world. But Chua said No complain, which means her children must be decisive and independent enough to push their way through all the difficulties. Traditional Chinese education tells us you fight or you die. That is the essence of life. All in all, Chinese education is superior, because it equips children with armor before the war, which has been proved to be the best way to protect them from self-defeating in the battlefield.Words count:381篇三:中美文化差异英语作文Differences Between Chinese Culture and American CultureI have been living in China for twenty years. I was born in JiangSu province, and also grew up in there. My family members were from different parts of China. My mom’s hometown is at the Huabei plain which is the north side of The Yellow River. However, my father grew up in Nanjing, the famous city which locates beside the Yangzi River. Most of people in southern China are used to have rice as their daily main food resource, but northern China mostly has wheat. But no matter which part of China, meat is not the major food for us.Chinese people always believe that rice, wheat, vegetable, fruit are the best for our health. In contrast, meat would give more troubles to our health, for example, heart attack, high blood pressure, and etc.But people in America, mostly have meat as their food resource. The most important is that they mostly have beef, chicken, shrimp, turkey, instead of pork and lamb. In restaurants, you can easily find hamburger, steak, ribs with a little rice and a piece of bread. I believe that the food style gives American people much more energy than we have. They are much stronger than us. That is the fact!I have heard of an interesting story about Yao Ming, who is one of the famous NBA player right now. During his first season in NBA, millions of people are attracted by his height and his cute smile. However, he is not strong enough to play NBA game yet! He ever told the reporter that he likes to have soup that his mom makes for him. Soup could not help him, only steak, cheese, butter could make him stronger and gives him more energy. In order to increase his competition, he has to be used to American food style!“Custom is the great guide of human life”, wrote Scottish philosopher David Hume. Knowing the customs of a country is, in effect, a guide to understanding the soul of that country and itspeople. As a foreign language leaner, we should know the culture in our target language’s country. Only in this way, wecan really learn the language well.People express their culture through traditions in food, clothing, recreation, and ceremonies; through the education system and institutions of learning, including museums and libraries; and through the arts, encompassing the visual, literary, and performing arts. As a result, we will talk about the differences from some aspects.First, I will mention the addressing. In China, we will put the family names before our given names, and then in order to express our politeness, we would like to add “sir”or “lady”or their title after the name. On contrast, in America, people would like to put their family names after their given names and first names and they will put Mr., Mrs., Miss, Ms, Dr. orProf. before their names. It is foremost and first for us to know these differences so that we won’t make misunderstandings. And then we will talk about time conceptions. In America, their living beat is quite fast, so they consider time is quite precious. So, when they accept an invitation, they would try their best not to be late, but they also don’t go early to the inviters’, as this is considered to be impolite, and it seems to disturb the inviters’preparation. In China, we should also not be late for the inviters. However, in order to show our thanks and politeness, we would go to the inviters’house to help them prepare the meals and then we will have a happy time together. To open a conversation, people in different countries have different ways. In China, when people meet their friends by chance, they will say.”Where are you going?”or “have you eaten?”and then they will go on talking about other things. Butif you do this in America, you will be misunderstood that you want to invite him or her. Americans would like to say,”beautiful day, isn’t it?”to open a conversation even sometimes it is raining. It is not because the Americans can predict the weather but for the sake of customs.Let me come to the aspect of eating. Chopsticks are used for all meals in China. Food is placed at the center of the table and may include more than one type of main dish to be eaten with rice. All the food will be shared by all the persons and won’t be divided into several helps. While in America, they would use forks and knives for their meals. Every person has his own dishes and they won’t share one dish together. They think this is quite hygienic and they will enjoy their meals comfortably. However, what they eat is not so healthy, because they would like to eat a lot of meat and something with high calorie. Maybe it is good for them to obtain more fibersand keep a healthy body. Finally, I would like to mention something about the difference in marriage. Besides the ceremony for marriage has obvious difference----Americans will hold it in a church, while Chinese will hold it in a hotel inviting their relatives and friends to have dinner----their marriage notion has quite a lot of differences, too. From all these aspects, we can think of many differences in values, such as the notion of social statues, collectivism and socialism, the treatments to children and so on. In fact, we cannot say which one is right, which one is wrong, as we all know Americans and Chinese are not in the same group, people on the opposite side of the globe can never achieve the thousandth part of the group on the other side of the globe. What we should do is to learn the difference, and then we canreally learn the difference well.。

The Second World War not only took away people's lives but also left the lasting mental injury for human beings. A popular topic of film in the world is to reveal and reflect the sin and disaster of the war by veritable image. China and America, as the winner of Anti-fascist Alliance, have a large resource for the films about the war against Japan.

中美文化比较-《喜宴》中的文化差异(英文)My view on The Wedding BanquetIt’s not very easy to find a high quality movie that is produced almost 20 years ago, and after seeing this film. There are several things that impressed me a lot.During my watching, I cannot help laughing at some parts, especially when I saw the wedding, and I believe that we are very familiar with that scene. There is a kind of funny and strange thing that might be the differences between the cultures. Imagine this, what if it’s just a wedding that is hold in China? We may feel that the film is more boring. It is actually because the story is about a special wedding in New York, so we can see cultural clashes throughout this film. There are so many differences that the foreigners can never understand, but everyone can feel the cultural conflicts with the line” you are witnessing the results of 5000 years of sexual repression ”.There are differences throughout this movie, we Chinese tend to collective leading and self-sacrifice. The western tend to personal leading and free life. So the change during the wedding of Chao against his parents is the result of the kind of traditional lifestyle: self-control. And we can put it into self-constraint. In the movie, Chao doesn’t criticize Simon’s struggle against Chao’s parents. They changes the former video into a video of Chinese painting, and Chao’s mom cries while Chao’s father say nothing with a serious face. I think that we Chinese can all know what that kind of suffering is, and why the parents feel so sad after the wedding. We should understand the difficulties of the parents. We may all be moved by the scene that Chao is trying to feel the breath of his father, and we can also forgive himat the same time. However, we all know that Simon cannot accept this absolutely. When we are in conflict with our parents in some traditional values, we must make a choice between our ambitions and the family love. When we have to give up one of them, we will be influenced by our traditional cultural values. But these are the things that cannot be accepted by westerners, they agree with others on the freedom in every field in their lives. Thus, their lifestyles seem to be more various. Their cultural values do not equal to their real lives, and our real lives are equal to our values, we have to work hard to make our parents feel proud of us, and we should always listen to them to show our respect to them. If Chao doesn’t do what he is supposed to do, he wi ll make his parents feel shameful in front of their friends. If the wedding of Chao is very simple, the parents will feel sorry to the wife of his son. We are familiar with all the things above, but Chao’s difficulties during the wedding cannot be understood by the stunned Americans. Take the kiss of between the new couple for example, they don’t know why should they be so excited to see it, because they think that is very common, they can see the scene every now and then. But we know that, it’s the only fe w chances to break the taboo in front theparents. At last, the film have an ending that seems to be happy, Weiwei gives up abortion, and Simon agrees to be the foster father of the child, the scene that the mom is watering the flowers, the father is reading the newspaper on the chair, Chao is busying with his work, all the things seems to be peaceful, but we should know that it’s just the surface of their relationships. They all have their own ideas, but they can get along with each other.I think that this is what the director wants to express to us: we should be tolerant.。
从电影中体会中西方文化的差异
从电影中体会中西方文化的差异To Learn the Cultural Differences Between East and West from Movies 电影《空军一号》中,飞机在最后坠毁之前,飞机上除了总统一家,还有一名重伤的保卫人员,总统的选择是先把自己的妻儿送去对面的飞机,然后再送重伤保卫人员。
In the movie Air Force One, the president chose to send his wife and daughter to the safe plane first rather than the stretcher case before the crashing down of the Air Force One.
It seems unimaginable in China, because many Chinese movies which are about revolutionary war told us that noble-minded(高尚的)person should be altruistic(无私的). There are many scenes in Chinese movies which show this:For instance, doctors sacrificed their own lives for the benefits of others; firemen rescue the government's properties without considering their own lives and possessions(个人财产).

Cultural differences between Chinese movies and American ones2009级自动化学院刘印章学号3109001618 11组Abstract:Movie is a good way to show the real life and to describe the ideal one, just like the music and the painting. What's more,it is a combination of them. And the different styles of the movies present the different cultural. In this paper, we aim to explore the culture differences between Chinese movies and American ones.Key words: culture difference,China,America,movies1.Story VS ArtA nice movie is made of a wonderful story and artistic creation.Chinese movies are better than the American ones in the story. In other word, there are always a good story in Chinese movie. When making a movie, most of Chinese will take a story into first consideration.Because in Chinese culture, they value the social responsibility. They would like to lead the people to the truth, the good and the beauty, using a whole story. This is to say, although there are not gorgeous effects in the view, you can be also infected by the story filled with the emotion.Take a Chinese movie <Echoes of the rainbow>(《岁月神偷》)for example.I watched it many years ago,but every plot is still fresh in my mind now.Jin Yi's family is poor but full of the unselfish love. His parents work hard for the family without complain and love the children in their ways. And the pure love between Jin Yi and his girlfriend is yearning.Simple but familiar, the story in the movie seems to happen in our life.Compared with Chinese movies,American ones are purely a feast of eyes. The movies of Hollywood are famous as American blockbuster all around the world. What leaves a deep impression to the audience is the gorgeous effects and rich imagination. And making most use of the tricks of computer and photography is important acting skills in Hollywood. In this way the movie shows us a exciting scene.<Transformer> is an extremely wonderful movie. It tells a war between the car robots and the right part have a duty to protect the earth,a planet far away from theirs. But after watching it,and thinking twice,we may find that the story is simple.Kung fu panda is also a simple story, just telling how to a panda who loves kung fu learn it and beat a bad guy finally. This is the attitude of the American toward the film. They value the part of art more than the part of the story. Because their purpose of making movie is hunting for the creation and the art,not the story itself. In this aspect,we can think that the former are movies of story, and the latter are of art.2.Collectivism VS IndividualismChinese movie often publicize the collectivism, containing the benefits and strength of the group, community or country. On the contrary,American movie focus on the individualism. There is a hero can save the world or do something incredible just by himself in this kind of movie, such as <Batman>.As a young boy, Bruce Wayne witnessed in horror that his millionaire parents were slain in front of him--a trauma that leads him to become obsessed with revenge . When fate prevents him from avenging the deaths of his parents, Bruce flees to Asia where he seeks counsel from a dangerous but honorable ninja cult leader known as Ra's al Ghul. When he returns now decaying Gotham City, Bruce finds it has become overrun by organized crime and other dangerous individuals manipulating the system. Meanwhile, there are forces at work trying to remove him from his inherited place as the owner of Wayne Industries. So he began to fight with the crime.Like the batman, there are also <Superman>,<Spider man>,<Iron man>.And another movie <Forrest Gump> is this kind of movie but in other style.Forrest Gump who is unfortunately to be born with a lower IQ and the muscle problem, usually, people always think this kind of person can't be successful in doing anything. But, instead, this unlucky man has achieved lots of incredible success, he is a football star, a war hero, and later a millionaire!Forrest Gump mould incarnation of virtue is honest keeping one's word , conscientiously , brave paying attention to emotioning among film. In the film, Forrest Gump is a very pure image, but Jenny has become the degenerate symbol . And write the great discrepancy originally in this. To all that narrated, since beginning all behave with a kind of tender feeling and well-meaning attitude after all for the film, having even joined poesy composition, this makes the film seem soft and have no injury. It is not hard to find that China is still a developing country and deeply affected by the Confucianism. So the collectivism is neccesaryBut the America is a developed and "new" country, which is filled with the energy. It aims to remain the peace of the world. All in all, different background makes difference.Note:除引用少数电影介绍外,其他内容均为原创。

中西电影文化对比论文(英文版)
If we consider the western movie culture’s development is a development of technology, we can also call the development of Chinese movie as a development of thought. We can see so many differences between them from every aspect. At first, the themes of the films are different. We can see almost everything from the film, sometimes directors convey not only one thought, and some others try to discuss problems which should be thought by us carefully. But for Chinese films, themes seems more realistic——the family, friendships, love, conflicts, betray…Chinese movies focus more on the society but not the individuality. they want to express some common phenomenon or current affairs in their movies. To sum up, Chinese movies are more emotional, while western movies are more logical. That’s because our Chinese always focus on morality, and western people tend to analyses things with science.Another difference is the technology. In fact we always cannot believe that our country can release a marvel movie like the Lord of the Ring, because we don’t have such technology. Though since Hollywood movies began to be familiar to us, we started to learn from them. Hollywood movies care more about their special effects, and they will pay a large part of their fees to make it more real. That means from those movies, we can see another world we haven’t imagined! For the lack of technology, Chinese movies only can compete against with them by plots. However, Chinese movies nowadays seem never care about how terrible their plots are. Good stories are rare, but we have. Just like Farewell My Concubine, its value can also be appreciated by foreigners. That’s a typical Chinese movie which shows an age for us.The western movies always have a style of individuality. That’s what different from us. We always have awareness that all of us are a group, while western advocate the individualistic heroism. So many superhero movies such as Superman, Batman, they praise the perfect and adventurous mind of heroes. For China, we have different conception for hero——hero is who can sacrifice themselves in the danger and never give in to evil, even though he is a common people. So that we have lots of movies described the life of common people, they may be not handsome, not rich, not so strong, even have some bad habits, but they have their principles, and strive to fight with fate.Despite those factories, we can also see something from the western directors. They always find some new ways to express them. From the silent movie to sound movie, from the black-and-white movie to color movie, from real characteristics to roles who created by computer. All of those revolutions mean their creative minds. Some classical movies maybe very old-fashioned now, but for the age they produced, they pioneered the age. We just lack such ideas. That’s why our movies falls now, since we always imitate those movies which surprised us, but seldom create a completelynew Chinese style movie. We also have so many things to learn. To learn from western movies, isn’t mean give up our traditional ideas. In fact, now more and more foreigners begin to be interested in Chinese culture, and put them into their movies, most of them caught world’s eyes, like Kung Fu Panda, Mulan. The cross cultural exchange in movies proves that our traditions are still alive and popular. That’s also a suggestion that Hollywood needs more themes that now. People may feel tired about western movies, and they are also searching a new way. The foreign culture seems a great way to convey more interesting thoughts for people. Hollywood can learn from us, and we also can learn from them. Some movies such as Guasha , they discussed the problems and differences between Chinese and western, give a new view about the cultural fusion. Through simple but interesting family stories, make us have a new conception about Chinese in America. That’s also a creative thought which we study from western. To find the ideas about other cultures, is a chance to understand foreign culture, also a way to complete our own culture.

National raceThe whole question of the changing role of Blacks in American society as been the subject of newspaper articles around the world so frequently that visitors to the United States do not know what to expect when they arrive. They may be surprised when they see that Blacks and Whites work side by side in offices , factories , and schools across the country . The majority of Blacks in the United States, however, live in and around only a small number of American cities. Many dark-skinned visitors arrive in the United States fearing personal attack or expecting various degrees of racial prejudice. Some forms of discrimination still exist ,unfortunately, especially in the areas of the housing , schools , and jobs . The school equality is still more a dream than a reality. There are still too many areas of the country where Black Americans do not enjoy the same full opportunities as White Americans . However, the vast majority of American s are working, studying, and sharing public places together. This was not true even a few years ago in some parts of the country, but progress is steadily being made. You will be able to observe the improvement in race relations as soon as your plane lands . You will see it in the airport, in public buses and trains , in theaters , restaurants , rest room, in sops and libraries , in offices and factories . Close personal friendships between Blacks andWhites , full trust and social relationships are still not common , except in certain areas,However, even in this - the slowest area of progress-there has been change , especiallyamong young people.文化差异(Culture Difference):财富与特权Wealth and PrivilegeOwning cars , large houses , or swimming pools mean different things in different cultures and may confuse a visitor to the United States . In many nations , only the rich have such things as cars and swimming pools ; the poor have very little.By contrast, this is not true in the United States . The cost of certain things that only the rich can afford in other countries is relatively low. This means that laborers , farmers , and people who are not usually regarded as rich nevertheless have many possessions tat only the rich have in other nations . Understandably a visitor may assume that all Americans who own cars are as rich as people in his own country who own cars . Actually , this is not the cases; secretaries, university students , factory workers or farmers can and do buy cars and many other "expensive " things . Generally , they pay for these possessions gradually , during a period of many months , or even years , so that the cost each most is not too high in relation to their monthly wages .文化差异(Culture Difference):个人的进步Personal ProgressIn many parts of the world , personal influence is essential in achieving success. This is not true in the United States, where success usually results from hard work , education, skill, and personal initiative , America is truly a"do-it-yourself" society ; success is not dependent on family origins or the help of an influential person . Personal progress is the result of individual effort.Because effort and initiative are so important in America ,there are many customs that may be different from those practiced in other countries. For example , it is not considered dishonorable to quit a job, even if you have had it for only a short time . Moving from job-to -job , or "job-hopping ", as it is called , is quite acceptable in the United States. Frequently , the opportunity to change jobs offers workers a chance to move up to a better position. Americans like to move from place to place trying new jobs, meeting new people and living in different parts of the country. "Job-hopping" also gives employers a chance to benefit from the new ideas and skills that different people bring to their jobs even if such people are employed for only a short time.文化差异(Culture Difference):真实还是礼貌?Truth or Courtesy ?Just as the degree of individual freedom that exists in America seems loose and therefore uncomfortable to many visitors . In many countries , people will tell you what they think you want to here , whether or not itis true. To them , this is the polite thing to do. To Americans it is considered confusing -even dishonest -to avoid telling the true facts. even if avoiding the truth is done only to be polite . It is helpful to remember that different cultures consider some matters more important than others . Wit Americans , however, trust and truth are most important. One of the worst tings that can be said about someone in America is that " you cannot trust him"Considering such differences in values among the many cultures of the world, it is natural that misunderstandings [1] will occur. "How far is it to the next town?" an American asks a man standing by the edge of a road. In some countries , because theman realizes the traveler is tired and eager to reach the next village, he will politely say , ' Just down the road ". He thinks this is more encouraging, gentler, and therefore the answer the traveler wants to hear. So the American drives alone for many more hours before he comes to the village. The traveler is angry, feeling "tricked". He thinks that the man has purposely lied to him because he must have know quite will well what the distance was.If a visitor to the United States asked an American standing at the edge of a road how far the next town was, the American would think it dishonest if he said it was near when he knew it was really 24 miles away. Although he, too, would be sympathetic with the tired traveler , he would say, "You have a long way to go yet ; it is at least 24 miles more. " Thetraveler might be disappointed , but he would know what to expect, and there would be no misunderstanding.文化差异(Culture Difference):美国社会正在改变American Society is ChangingIn many nations , everyday activities are done in a planned , orderly manner. For example , formal relationships among people may be determined according to customs and habits that have existed for a long time . People visiting an informal country , such as the United States , may find that the American belief in personal initiative or freedom (including the freedom to disagree with those in authority ), and the whole economic system is quits confusing and uncontrolled . To some visitors such freedoms are too "loose" and too disorganized to be comfortable.Today , the United States is experiencing great change in every part of society ;therefore life in America may indeed seem confused . Social attitudes are being questioned . Americans arewondering: "Is there any morality ?""Why has the nation never given all of its citizens full opportunity ?""What courses should be taught in school?""What is the role of women in society ? "As visitors , you will notice that some Americans are beginning to leave the cities and make their homes in small cities and towns where life is quieter and slower . Political beliefs are changing . The kinds of skills needed by workers today differ from those in demand several years ago.文化差异(Culture Difference):权威AuthorityIn many countries , authority is seldom , if ever, questioned , either because it is highly respected , or because it is feared . Sometimes , too, Because rank has been important in certain societies for a long time, people have been trained never to question those in authority .. For example , children are not expected to question their teachers in school .It may be considered improper for young businessmen to suggest ideas that differ from those of older, more experienced members of the business. In other countries, including America, children are trained to question and search for answers . When a child asks a question, he will often be told to go to the library and find the answer for himself. By the time students reach the age of 14 or 15, they may be developing exciting new ideas in all fields of science and the arts . To encourage such creativity [1] , there are many national prizes offered to students , every year for their scientific discoveries and artistic accomplishments. This interest in questioning and searching may be considered by some people as bad for young people's manners , that young people lack respect for authority . This impression may be createdwhen visitors notice young Americans asking questions and arguing with older people . However , this is because many Americans have a different attitudetoward authority than may exist in other areas of the world . In a work or business situation, ideas are freely and openly discussed and argued. It is important to remember tat it is the person's ideas that are being questioned, not the individual himself..The two are quite separate. The purpose of the searching , questioning , and arguing is to find the facts in a particular situation, and therefore a solution, so that the work of the business can progress in the most effective manner possible. As was mentioned earlier, you may notice the some questioning in social conversations . Although some individuals may think that Americans are rude because of their direct manner with people, they are merely trying to learn more about your ideas.文化差异(Culture Difference):Table Manners: a Cultural DifferenceFor many Westerners, the Chinese dinner table is terra incognita([拉]未发现的地域). There are no forks or knives for the Westerners to use. The Chinese host makes great, sweeping(大范围的)arm movements that go over large sections of the table passing over both food and friends alike. The scene is fantastic (非常好的), but it leaves many foreigners at a loss(让……迷惑)for what to do. In most Western restaurants and homes there are rules about how to talk, eat and sit that are highly restrictive(受限制的), and they create an atmosphere(气氛)that is completely different from what we find here in China. In my childhoodhome, dinner was enjoyed with hushed(压低声音的) voices, and the topics open for discussion were very much restricted. We were not allowed to bring up anything that was potentially unappetizing(倒胃口的); body functions(上洗手间), bugs, murder and mayhem(使人肢体伤残的行为)in general were all strictly forbidden topics. If I had to leave the table to use the toilet, I had to verbally excuse myself without mentioning what it was that I was going to do. "May I be excused, please?I need to wash my hands." I would say.My mother would say, "Sure." My father would often play a joke on us by saying, "Your hands don't look dirty to me!"As for eating, we did it quietly. No eating noises were allowed.Everything must be done as quietly as possible. Therefore, we had to eat with our mouths closed. To make a "smacking" noise was, perhaps, the worst offence possible. While drinking soup or coffee or wine "slurping"(咕嘟咕嘟地喝)was also forbidden. If any sound whatever was created by our intake of food or beverage(饮料), it constituted(构成)bad manners! With that in mind, it was, of course, unthinkable to speak with one's mouth full of food, so speaking only occurred(发生)before or after one had taken in food and swallowed(吞咽)it.How one sits at the table is also prescribed(被规定的). One is to sit up straight with the recessive(非主导的,隐性的)hand (usually the left) in one's lap holding a napkin(餐巾)while the dominant hand (usually theright) holds the fork or spoon. The only time one is allowed to have both hands on the table is when one is using a knife to cut something, but as soon as the cutting is done, the recessive hand goes back to the lap. Also, elbows(肘)are not allowed on the table. Therefore, one props(撑着)the arm against the edge of the table just below the elbow. One should never reach for(伸手拿)any food on the table; one should ask someone sitting near it to give it to you. "Would you please pass the potatoes?" "May I trouble you for the salt?" These are phrases that you are likely to hear on any given night of the week at a family dinner. When a guest comes from the West to enjoy a meal with you, it would be a good idea for you to explain to your guest what will happen at dinner and to find out if a fork would be easier to use than chopsticks(筷子). In my time in China, I have come to enjoy Chinese table manners far more than those prescribed by my own culture, but for many it is impossible to adjust(适应). The best policy is to ask your guest questions to find out what he or she is comfortable with.文化差异(Culture Difference):社会SocietyThe United States, like other countries has its rich and poor people , its rich and poor neighborhoods.Americans love --- and many are themselves living examples of ---the "self-made man. "You will hear this expression often. But forevery person who is successful. They are usually better educated tan their parents and therefore more likely to have good, well paying jobs.In addition to the fact that the United States includes people whose families originally came from many other parts of the world , Americans move across the nation in great numbers. One study reported that one of every five families in the United States moves every three years. This continuous mixing of people into new communities is an important observation to consider when trying to understand the meaning of class in America. We have already discussed the questioning, "do-it -yourself" Americanpersonality that is another important consideration. In many countries, a man's social class is determined at birth . That is , his social class or position is shared with his family , his wider group of relatives . In the United States , position in society is , to a large degree, personal rather than related to family or group. Before World War Two, family ties were more important America than they are now. Uncles, aunts grandparents , and children vacationed together, spent holidays together, and saw much of each other. But as the American economy developed more rapidly after the war, social customs began to change. With the rapidly growing economy, there were new employment opportunities, many of them in scientific fields. These opportunities were often located in other parts of the country. The younger members of many families who were will educated began tomove away from the towns where their families lived to tale these new jobs. As these young people became successful, they often moved into a new social stratum [1], consisting of others who, like themselves, moved away from home to follow job opportunities. These same changes are already happening in most new countries around the world. Today, a man who can read or fix a machine may become the new leader of his community in place of an older person. Often young people can better understand the new sciences and modern skills ; as these young people learn and advance , their wages rise and they become increasingly successful.Frequently, it is just one member of a family that becomes very successful. Other members continue working at theiraverage jobs and salaries, without much chance of becoming as successful as the son or daughter. When this happens, people sometimes become separated from their family. Many return to visit, but others move away never to return to their relatives and old friends. To many people, success means having more power than one possessed before. It can be won through skill, knowledge , leadership, or sometimes just by hard work .In America, "success" has normally bee accompanied by an increase in wealth. As a result, an individual 's social position is determined both by a person's job and by the kinds of possessions he owns .As we said , however, young people are in the process of developing different values and different ways to measure success.[1] stratum n. [地] 地层, [生](组织的)层, 社会阶层。
