Li Bai (701-762 AD) are the two greatest poets of the Tang Dynasty. They are often referred to in history as “Li and Du”.

Li Bai, a prodigy in Chinese poetry, had a bold and unconstrained character and cherished freedom. He spent most of his time travelling far and wide, an experience which was full of legendary color. His unrestrained personality and rare talent imbued his poems with romantic sentiment, rich imagination and exuberant style. He was revered by latter generations as “poet immortal”. “Seest thou not the waters of the Yellow River rush down from the sky, and roll off to the sea forevermore not to come back.”“Leaving home laughing long and loud with my head held high, we will never be men of mediocre talents.”The grandeur and superb talent demonstrated in the poems come forth only from Li Bai the poet. He wrote in his life time more than 900 poems, a great treasure for Chinese literature.

Du Fu had a different life experience. Deeply concerned about his country and people, he never stood aloof from social reality. His poetry mirrored the times in which he lived and truthfully presented the social life of his people. For this reason, his poetry was referred to as “poetic history”. Du Fu created, during his life time, more than 1400 poems, of which the most famous are “Xinan Officer”, “The Shihao Officer”, “Tong Pass Officer”, “Parting after Nuptials”, “Parting during Declining Years”and “Parting without a Home”. His poems are profound in meaning and

dignified in style. Every word is carefully pondered over and precisely chosen. Read his following poem: “The state being broken up, its mounts and streams remain. The capital in spring does thick plants contain. Aggrieved by the times’events, flowers shed tears; with regrets for enforced partings, the birds were shaken at hearts.”Every line of his poem touches the heart of the reader. It is no exaggeration to say that in poetic creation Du Fu realized his motto “If my lines don’t startle others, in death I’ll find no rest.”His poetry has become (or set) a brilliant example for generation after generation of poets in China. He is truly worth of the honored title “poet saint”.
