She looked out upon a world cleft into gigantic disorder and felt within her the power to unite it in a book. That gigantic ambition is to be felt throughout the novel — a struggle, half thwarted but of superb conviction, to say something through the mouths of her characters which is not merely “I love” or “I hate”, but “we, the whole human race” and “you, the eternal powers…” the sentence remains unfinished. ——Virginia Woolf
The repetition of the characters’ names
The names of the second generation are the repetitions of the first one, such as Catherine and Linton. Actually the story happens in a closed society, and the author hardly mentions anything about the outside world. But we can see the whole England from the closed society. It’s not only the love between Heathcliff and Catherine.
“Now, my bonny lad, you're mine. Let's see if one tree won't grow as crooked as another, with the same wind to twist it.” Here one tree stands for Hareton, and another tree stands for Haethcliff.
Therefore, Emily desired to express her feeling through the love tragedy of rich and intense fantasy features, and expressed her strong dissatisfaction with social reality. These just created the conditions for the birth of Wuthering Heights.

This novel is famous for the gothic styles as well as its theme. It tells the tale of the all-encompassing and passionate, yet thwarted, love between Heathcliff and Catherine Earnshaw, and how this unresolved passion eventually destroys them and people around them.
This is the first novel that employs flashback. The novel breaks the traditional way of narration, but to create two characters Mr. Lockwood and Nelly Dean to tell the story.
Wuthering Heights is a land of storm. It is irritable, rough, violent, energetic and constantly being torn by strong passions.

“Wuthering Heights”
It’s known as “19th century’s most peculiar novel” and “a soul of drama”. It releases unique, shining and splendid glory in the brilliant literary constellation of the nineteenth century.

The trees can’t stand straightly because the winds here are so strong and force the trees to fall to one side. Here the winds means the pressure from the society, and the trees means the human nature.
The class difference is the direct cause which leads to their love tragedy.
This tragedy is also caused by the two characters’ personalities.

The names of the two main places in the novelWuthering Heights and Thrushcross Grange.
“Wuthering Heights is the name of Mr. Heathcliff’s dwelling. “Wuthering” being a significant provincial adjective, descriptive of the atmospheric tumult to which its station is exposed in stormy weather.” 呼啸山庄是希刺克厉夫先生的住宅名称。“呼啸”是一个意味深 长的内地形容词,形容这地方在风暴的天气里所受的气压骚动。 Thrushcorss Grange is set in a well-landscapes park and sheltered from the wild elements. The success of Wuthering Heights is, in part, owing to the use of flashback.

She suffered from poverty of physical world and helplessness of spiritual world. Loneliness made her the physical and emotional world full of a sense of extreme disappointment and shattered.
