Following the crowd may not always be in a person's best interest. But new research suggests that teens who get along with their friends may end up healthier as adults.Scientists have known that close friendships help boost health. That's true for both teens and adults. The finding inspired Joseph Allen,a psychologist at the University of Virginia, and his team to study whether experiences during teen years would influence adult health. So they followed 171 teens, starting when the kids were just 13.They interviewed each one every year for five years, and also spoke to these teens' closest friends, who provided additional information about the quality of their friendships. The same 171 people were interviewed again at ages 25,26 and 27.This time, the questions surveyed each person's overall health. When the researchers analyzed the data, they found a strong connection between a teen's behavior and adult health.Teens who had close friends grew up to be the healthier adults.Whether teens held back their feelings or expressed them to close friends also influenced later health. Those who held back their feelings were more likely to be sick as adults. The connection held up even after the scientists accounted for other possible influences on health.Weight, family income and drug use were all examined. So were mental health issues, such as anxiety and depression. And in these people, such other factors did not explain adult health as well as teen friendships did.Getting along with the crowd may have benefits, says Allen, but there are also drawbacks.Teens who are more independent tend to do better at school and work. And peer pressure may lead some kids to engage in risky behavior, such as smoking, drinking or using drugs.Dealing with it is an ongoing challenge,Allen acknowledges.“Finding the right balance is the key.Teens shouldn't lose heart for not finding this easy.”And,he adds,“Parents need to be understanding about the pressures teens face.”1.Where can you probably read this passage?A.Science fiction.B.Health column.C.Fashion magazine.D.Entertainment newspaper.2.We can learn from Allen's study that ________.A.many other factors have a greater influence on adult health than teen friendships B.mental health issues have nothing to do with adult healthC.the same 171 teens were interviewed each year from 13 to 27D.the teens who couldn't express themselves grew up to be unhealthy3.According to what Allen said,we can know that ________.A.in order to do better at school, teens should not follow the crowdB.though it's challenging for teens to deal with peer pressure, they should not give upC.teens will engage in smoking, drinking or using drugs when facing peer pressure D.parents should understand their teens and stop them going with friends4.What can be inferred from the passage?A.There is nothing bad for teens to follow the crowd.B.Close friendships are the most important for people's health.C.Teen friendships may help teens become healthier adults.D.Adult health is only influenced by teen friendships.【解题导语】研究表明,与朋友较少或者没有朋友的青少年相比,有朋友的青少年在长大后更健康。

高考英语一轮复习 Unit 2 Language课后达标检测 3高三3英语试题

入舵市安恙阳光实验学校Unit 2 Language 课时练1 2篇阅读+1篇完形Ⅰ阅读理解A(2020·安徽五校质检)Gabriella’s family immigrated to the US from Peru when she was two years old. As a compound bilingual(熟谙两种语言的人), Gabriella develops two linguistic codes at the same time, with a set of concepts, learning both English and Spanish. Her teenage brother, on the other hand, might be a coordinate bilingual, working with two sets of concepts, learning English in school, Spanish at home. Finally, Gabriella’s parents are likely to be subordinate bilinguals who learned a second language by translating it into their mother tongue.Regardless of accent and pronunciation, all types of bilingual people can become fully proficient in a language. It seems that the difference may not be apparent. But recently brain imaging technology has given a glimpse into how specific aspects of language learning affect the bilingual brain. It’s well known that the brain’s left hemisphere(半球) is in charge of logical processes, while the right hemisphere is more active in emotional and social ones. Language involves both types of functions. Critical period hypothesis says children learn languages more easily because their developing brains let them use both hemispheres in language learning, while in most adults, language relies on one hemisphere, usually the left. Before the 1960s, bilingualism was considered a handicap that slowed the children’s development by forcing them to spend too much energy distinguishing between languages. But a recent study did show that bilingualism may make you smarter. It does make your brain more complex, healthier, and more actively engaged, and even if you didn’t have the good fortune of learning a second language like a child, it’s never too late to do yourself a fa vor and make the linguistic leap from “Hello” to “Hola” “Bonjour” or “nihao” because when it comes to our brains, a little exercise can go a long way.【解题导语】本文是一篇说明文。

We may speak contemptuously of the poor old Romans because they relished the orgies of slaughter that went on in their arenas. We may despise them because they mistook these goings on for entertainment. We may forgive them condescendingly because they lived 2000 years ago and obviously knew no better. But are our feelings of superiority really justified? Are we any less blood-thirsty? Why do boxing matches, for instance, attract such universal in terest? Don’t the spectators who attend them hope they will see some violence? Human beings remains as bloodthirsty as ever they were. The only difference between ourselves and the Romans is that while they were honest enough to admit that they enjoyed watching hungey lions tearing people apart and eating them alive, we find all sorts of sophisticated arguments to defend sports which should have been banned long age; sports which are quite as barbarous as, say, public hangingsor bearbaiting. It really is incredible that in this day and age we should still allow hunting or bull-fighting, that we should be prepared to sit back and watch two men batter each other to pulp in a boxing ring, that we should be relatively unmoved by the sight of one or a number of racing cars crashing and bursting into flames. Let us not deceive ourselves. Any talk of ‘the sporting spirit’ is sheer hypocrisy. People take part in violent sports because of the high rewards they bring. Spectators are willing to pay vast sums of money to see violence. A world heavyweight championship match, for instance, is front page news. Millions of people are disappointed if a big fight is over in two rounds instead of fifteen. They feel disappointment because they have been deprived of the exquisite pleasure of witnessing prolonged torture and violence. Why should we ban violent sports if people enjoy them so much? You may well ask. The answer is simple: they are uncivilized. For centuries man has been trying to improve himself spiritually and emotionally –admittedly with little success. But at least we no longer tolerate the sight madmen cooped up in cages, or public floggings of any of the countless other barbaric practices which were common in the past. Prisons are no longer the grim forbidding places they used to be. Social welfare systems are in operation in many parts of the world. Big efforts are being made to distribute wealth fairly. These changes have come about not because human beings have suddenly and unaccountably improved, but because positive steps were taken to change the law. The law is the biggest instrument of social change that we have and it may exert great civilizing influence. If we banned dangerous and violent sports, we would be moving one step further to improving mankind. We would recognize that violence is degrading and unworthy of human beings.46.It can be inferred from the passage that the author’s opinion of nowadays’ human beings isA. not very high.B. high.C. contemptuous.D. critical.47.The main idea of this passage isA. vicious and dangerous sports should be banned by law.B. people are willing to pay vast sums money to see violence.C. to compare two different attitudes towards dangerous sports.D. people are bloodthirsty in sports.48.That the author mentions the old Romans isA. To compare the old Romans with today’s people.B. to give an example.C. to show human beings in the past know nothing better.D. to indicate human beings are used to bloodthirsty.49.How many dangerous sports does the author mention in this passage?A. Three.B. Five.C. Six.D. Seven.50.The purpose of the author in writing this passage isA. that, by banning the violent sports, we human beings can improve our selves.B. that, by banning the dangerous sports, we can improve the law.C. that we must take positive steps to improve social welfare system.D. to show law is the main instrument of social change.B篇Advertisers Perform a Useful Service to the CommunityAdvertisers tend to think big and perhaps this is why they’re always coming in for criticism. Their critics seem to resent them because they have a flair for self-promotion and because they have so much money to throw around. ‘It’s iniquitous,’ they say, ‘that this entirely unproductive industry (if we can call it that) should absorb millions of pounds each year. It only goes to show how much profit the big companies are making. Why don’t they stop advertising and reduce the price of their goods? After all, it’s the consumer who pays…’w*w*w*k*s*5*u*c*o*m The poor old consumer! He’d have to pay a great deal more if advertising didn’t create mass markets for products. It is precisely because of the heavy advertising that consumer goods are so cheap. But we get the wrong idea if we think the only purpose of advertising is to sell goods. Another equally important function is to inform. A great deal of the knowledge we have about household goods derives largely from the advertisements we read. Advertisements introduce us to new products or remind us of the existence of ones we already know about. Supposing you wanted to buy a washing machine, it is more than likely you would obtain details regarding performance, price, etc., from an advertisement.Lots of people pretend that they never read advertisements, but this claim may be seriously doubted. It is hardly possible not to read advertisements these days. And what fun they often are, too! Just think what a railway station or a newspaper would be like without advertisements. Would you enjoy gazing at a blank wall or reading railway byelaws while waiting for a train? Would you like to read only closely printed columns of news in your daily paper? A cheerful, witty advertisement makes such a difference to a drab wall or a newspaper full of the daily ration of calamities. We must not forget, either, that advertising makes a positive contribution to our pockets. Newspapers, commercial radio and television companies could not subsist without this source of revenue. The fact that we pay so little for our daily paper, or can enjoy so many broadcast programmes is due entirely to the money spent by advertisers. Just think what a newspaper would cost if we had to pay its full price!Another thing we mustn’t forget is the ‘small ads.’ which are in virtually every newspaper and magazine. What a tremendously usefulservice they perform for the community! Just about anything can be accomplished through these columns. For instance, you can find a job, buy or sell a house, announce a birth, marriage or death in what used to be called the ‘hatch, match and dispatch’ column but by far the most fascinating section is the personal or ‘agony’ column. No other item in a newspaper provides such entertaining reading or offers such a deep in sight into human nature. It’s the best advertisement for advertising there is!51.What is main idea of this passage?A. Advertisement.B. The benefits of advertisement.C. Advertisers perform a useful service to communities.D. The costs of advertisement.52.The attitude of the author toward advertisers isA. appreciative.B. trustworthy.C. critical.D. dissatisfactory.53.Why do the critics criticize advertisers?A. Because advertisers often brag.B. Because critics think advertisem ent is a “waste of money”.C. Because customers are encouraged to buy more than necessary.D. Because customers pay more.54.Which of the following is Not True?A. Advertisement makes contribution to our pockets and we may know everything.B. We can buy what we want.C. Good quality products don’t need to be advertised.D. Advertisement makes our life colorful.55.The passage isA. Narration.B. Description.C. Criticism.D. Study shows we __1__ use a single skill when communicating, so it makes sense to __2__ more than one skill at a time. There are several advantages for using an integrated approach. Not only are learners given the chance to interact in a __3__ way, but learners are also exposed to the richness and complexity(复杂性)of the language. __4__, with a separated approach, it is difficult to use language in a meaningful way. For __5__, when students practise only one skill at a time, such as speaking, it is meaningless, because they can not concentrate on just speaking while they are __6__ communicating.Another advantage to using an integrated approach is that students are more likely to be __7__ to learn a language if they are able to use it to interact, rather than to just have knowledge about the language. In this approach, language is treated as a __8__ of interaction, rather than an academic subject.A third advantage of an integrated approach is that skill integration allows for __9__ in all main skills at the same time, which allows students to be able to use their strengths in order to help them grow in their weaknesses. In other __10__,if a student is particularly __11__ at reading, they may be able to use this skill to help them with listening or writing. An integrated skills approach is obviously a more realistic approach to language learning, while a separated approach does not __12__ a meaningful understanding of language. New research suggests they're lipreaders too.Florida scientists discovered that starting around age 6 months, babies begin shifting from the eye gaze(注视)to studying mouths when people talk to them.“In order to imitate you, the baby has to figure out how to shape their lips to make that particular sound they're hearing,” explains psychologist David Lewkowicz of Florida Atlantic University, who led the study. “It's an incredibly complex process.”Apparently it doesn't take them too long to absorb the movements that match basic sounds. By their first birthdays, babies start shifting back to look you in the eye again — unless they hear the unfamiliar sounds of a foreign language. Then, they stick with lipreading a bit longer. In the experiment, David Lewkowicz tested nearly 180 babies, groups of them at ages 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 months. How? They showed videos of a woman speaking in English or Spanish to babies of English speakers. A device tracked where each baby was focusing his or her gaze and recorded how long the gaze lasted. They found a dramatic shift in attention: When the speaker used English, the 4montholds gazed mostly into her eyes. The6montholds spent equal amounts of time looking at the eyes and the mouth. The 8 and 10montholds studied mostly the mouth. At 12 months, attention started shifting back toward the speaker's eyes.It makes sense that at 6 months, babies begin observing lip movement, Lewkowicz says, because that's about the time babies' brains gain the ability to control their attention rather than automatically look toward noise. But what happened when these babies used to English heard Spanish? The12montholds studie d the mouth longer, just like younger babies. They needed the extra information to decipher (破译)the unfamiliar sounds.“It's a pretty interesting finding,” says University of Iowa psychology professor Bob McMurray, who also studies baby speech development. The babies “know what they need to know about, and they're able to draw their attention to what's important at that point in language development.”1. Littering is creating environmental problems all over the world and is often created by careless actions. If we guard our actions against careless littering we can ensure a better world for everyone.Littering is a severe problem in many countries around the world. For example, the African city of Kampala is suffering from the consequences of littering. For many years the city’s poor didn’t have a proper way to dispose of trash, so garbage filled the streets. Over the years much of the plastic garbage would slowly be pushed into the ground. This plastic li tter doesn’t allow rain water to seep(渗透) into the ground and has caused flooding. In many of Kampala’s poor neighborhoods whenever it rains people’s homes become flooded with water. This water is often dirty and has allowed diseases to spread. This flooding has become so bad that the Ugandan government has banned plastic bags in the entire country to stop the littering.Trash often finds its way into the water. Today the world’s oceans are believed to have millions of tons of trash floating around in them. This creates a problem for wildlife because they may accidentally eat the trash and die from it. Scientists have found on very remote islands baby birds that have died because their stomachs were full of trash. Fish often get tangled in plastic and will also die. Our actions in our own countries affect the most remote parts of the planet. We can all be part of the solution to stop this pollution, just by preventing careless littering. If you need to throw something away, finda trash can. If you see a friend littering tell them not to. By making this small change we can create a better world for all.1.What is the cause of littering?(No more than 3 words)________________________________________________________________ ________2.How does plastic litter cause flooding?(No more than 11 words) ________________________________________________________________ ________3.If you need to throw something away, what should you do?(No more than 5 words)________________________________________________________________ ________4.What’s the topic of this passage?(No more than 5 words)________________________________________________________________ ________课后达标检测8Ⅰ.单项填空1.解析:选C。

One is interest. Knowing about the way people behave makes your reading more interesting. Another reason is usefulness. If you are going to have a conversation with native speakers of a language you learn, you need to know the sort of topics that interest them once you get past “Hello”. You need to know something about their favorite sports, the current (现时的) government of the country where the language is spoken, current fashions in clothes and outstanding national events in recent times, to mention a few. Showing that you know something about their country can lead to interesting conversations. The way people think is closely connected with language. Languages are one channel through which different cultures present their ideas both within themselves and in contact with others. The fact that a language does not have the same range of words as another language does not mean that they do not value those things as much.Whether or not your main intention to learn a language is to learn about people's cultural backgrounds or to deal with a degree course, you will be learning about it indirectly from various s ources about culture like the coursebooks, films, the news, literature or even travel brochures (手册). You could make a long list just by thinking of all the things that are important to the culture such as customs that go back centuries, architecture, traditional ceremonies, the way people relate to each other in families, the value that are important to a society, the sense of humour t hat people share, movies, music and art. All these cultural aspects are important to language learners if they want to get a better understanding of the language itself.1.Which of the following contributes to a conversation with native speakers?A.Greeting them by saying “Hello”.B.Talking about their religious beliefs.C.Tel ling them about your favorite sports.D.Mentioning interesting topics in their culture.2.What role does a language play in the culture?A.It offers the same range of words as another language.B.It is a channel through which people present their ideas.C.It values people's ideas and thoughts to a certain degree.D.It deals with the relationship between thoughts and language.3.The last paragraph mainly deals with ________.A.people's main purpose to learn a foreign languageB.the importance to learn about cultural backgroundsC.different cultural sources and main cultural aspectsD.how people think and what is valued by a society4.What might be the best title for this passage?A.What is a culture about?B.Why do we learn culture?C.What to learn in a culture?D.How to learn about culture?B(2013·江苏南通五市高三第三次调研)Carrier PigeonsPeople have used pigeons to carry messages to one another for hundreds of years. In fact, pigeons were a common way to send messages right up through World War Ⅱ.In 1815 an English banker named Nathan Rothschild made his fortuneby relying on messages sent to him by carrier pigeons. English troopswere fighting Napoleon's forces in France, and the English were believedto be losing. A financial panic gripped London. Government bonds wereoffered at low prices. Few people noticed that Rothschild was snapping_upthese bonds when everyone else was desperately trying to sell them. Afew days later, London learned the truth; the Duke of Wellington had defeated Napoleon at the battle of Waterloo. The value of the bonds went up, and Rothschild became extremely wealthy — all because his pigeons had brought him news of the victory before anyone else knew of it.Most of the time, however, carrier pigeons were used to benefit an entire country, not just one individual. The United States, England, France, Germany, and Italy, in both World War Ⅰ and World War Ⅱ, used carrier pigeons. Not only were the birds often the fastest, most reliable way to send messages, they could also be used to reach soldiers far behind enemy lines, where radios and field telephone lines were useless. Since they could easily be released from airplanes or ships, every branch of the armed services used the birds. In World War Ⅱ, more than 3,000 soldiers and 150 officers were needed to care for and train the tens of thousands of birds in the US Pigeon Service.Carrying messages could be a dangerous job. Some pigeons performed with such bravery that they became famous and were even awarded medals, such as England's Dicken Medal of Gallantry. In a few cases, pigeons even became prisoners of war. In 1918 American forces captured a pigeon named The Kaiser, which had been trained to fly special missions for Germany during battle. He was taken to America, where he lived to the age of 32.The most famous pigeon of all may have been Cher Ami. Stationed in France during World War Ⅰ, he carried twelve important messages for American forces. On his last mission, though wounded, he carried a message that saved the lives of 194 American soldiers. For his ex traordinary service, he was aw arded the French “Croix de Guerre”.Carrier pigeons are a slightly different breed from the kind of pigeon you see on city streets. They are much thinner and taller, with longer legs. Many people find carrier pigeons ugly because of their big wattle, a knobby buildup of skin on the beak; however, people who raise pigeons often enjoy this odd appearance and consider carriers the best of their breeds.Today, modern communication methods can carry information from one place to another hundreds of times faster than a pigeon could do it. However, few people would argue with the fact that carrier pigeons — especially those that served in the military (军队) —have earned their place in history. S tories about brave pigeons such as Cher Ami, President Wilson, and Colonel's Lady have the power to i nspire us as no fax machine or highspeed Internet connection coul d ever do.5.The author provides specific dates throughout the passage in order to ________.A.make a comparison between pigeons in different periodsB.describe the development of use of pigeons during wartimeC.indicate greater importance of pigeons in the past than nowD.show the impact of carrier pigeons at particular points in history6.The underlined phrase “snapping up” in Paragraph 2 means “________”.A.giving away B.putting asideC.getting in D.using up7.The passage leads us to be lieve that ________.A.there were more civil carrier pigeons than military ones during wartimeB.not all types of pigeon can be use d to carry messages for human beingsC.nobody could succeed in stopping carrier pigeons carrying out their tasksD.modern devices give us even greater enthusiasm than the famous pigeons8.The passage suggests the successful use of carrier pigeons depends on ________.A.their nature B.proper trainingC.their quality D.the geographyLanguage 单元检测(B卷——自主选做)Ⅰ.完形填空(2014·泰州统一检测)Language is so magical a thing that sometimes effective words can make a big difference. Apple has cleverly taken advantage of the power of the letter “i” — and many other brands are following suit. The BBC's iPlayer — which allows Web users to watch TV programs on the Internet — adopted the title in 2008. A lovely bear —popular in the US and UK —that plays music and video is called “iTeddy”. A slimmeddown version of London's Independent newspaper was launched last week unde r the name “i”.In general, singleletter prefixes have been popular since the 1990s, when terms such as email and ecommerce first came into use. Most “i” products are targeted at young people and considering the major readers of Independent's “i”, it's no surprise that they've selected this fashionable name. But it's hard to see what's so special about the letter “i”. Why not use “a”,“b”,or “c” instead? According to Tony Thorne, head of the Language Center at King's College, London, “i” works because it s meaning has become ambiguous. When Apple uses “i”, no one knows whether it means Internet, information, individual or interactive, Thorne told BBC Magazines. “Even when Apple created the iPad, it seems it didn't have one clear definition,” he says.“Howe ver, thanks to Apple, the term is now associated with portability (轻便).” adds Thorne.Clearly the letter “i” also agrees with the idea that the Western World is centered on the individual. Each person believes they have their own needs, and we love personalized products for this reason.Along with “Google” and “blog”, readers of BBC Magazines voted “i” as one of the top 20 words that have come to define the last decade. But as history shows, people grow tired of fads. From the 1900s to 1990s, products with “2000” in their names became fashionable as the year was associated with all things advanced and modern. However, as we entered the new century, the trend inevitably disappeared.1.People use iPlayer to ________.A.listen to music B.make a callC.watch TV programs online D.read newspapers2.We can infer that the Independent's “i” is aimed at ________.A.young readers B.old readersC.fashionable women D.engineers3.The underlined word “ambiguous” in Paragraph 4 means “________”.A.popular B.uncertainC.definite D.unique4.Nowadays, the “i” term often reminds people of the products which are ________.A.portable B.environmentally friendlyC.advanced D.recyclable5.The writer suggests that ________.A.“i” products are often of high quali tyB.iTeddy is a live bearC.the letter “b” replaces letter “i” to name the productsD.the popularity of “i” products may not last longⅢ.书面表达(2014·苏北三市二调)近日,一则中学生上学途中刮擦私家车后主动留下联系方式的新闻引起了社会对于诚信问题的热议。
