Reasons underlying the two different aesthetic values
Humanism VS Scientism
• One of the intellectual heritages of classical China is humanism. However, scientific spirit was preached in the western countries. During the classical age in China, it is just the humanism that consistently and distinctively concerns itself with human life, human conduct and human society. Humanism emphasizes knowledge, learning and thinking and it was greatly applied in the field of art. • The western people especially the Greeks, centered on the study of plants and animals, of mathematics and geometry, of tools and mechanics. The difference is so great and so basic that it had great influence upon the art in western countries.
Aesthetic views between China and the west 审美观
Similarities of Aesthetic values between Chinese and the westerners
• First of all, both peoples regard sensational pleasure as the foremost judgment of beauty. • Secondly, both people regard goodness as beautiful , and evil as ugly. • Thirdly, both peoples cherish truth and censure falsehood..
Collectivism VS Individualism
• Chinese civilization emphasizes the importance of always maintaining the doctrine of the mean. Confucius, along with most of his interpreters down through the centuries, largely ignored the metaphysical纯哲学 and epistemological认知 questions that have generally taken center stage in the West. Instead, Chinese philosophers tend to emphasize the importance of acting on principle (or, according to the rites, called li in Chinese), with the result that most Chinese people value a person's collective duty as a member of society far above one’s individual rights as a human being.
Differences of Aesthetic values between Chinese and the westerners
• First of all, the most distinguished ideas of western , aesthetic views, such as aesthetic autonomy(自律), disinterestedness, and art for art’s sake, have never been articulated in the tradition of Confucianism. . • Second, (Confucian) aesthetics also bears a pragmatist实用主义 pragmatist实用主义 spirit which prefers practicality to academy. Six arts(六艺): ritual礼, music乐, archery射, driving御, history书, and arithmetic 数
• In the globalized era, people’ mind should be open and learn from each other anything good to them.
Agricultural Culture VS Oceanic Βιβλιοθήκη Baiduulture
• Chinese culture and religion are characterized by an agricultural civilization of feudal autocracy. The Chinese civilization began in the north-temperate zone where the bounty of nature was never abundant and the struggle for existence was always hard. This produced a hard-working, simple-living, but never wildly imaginative people. • In the west, because of the conquest and expansion from the days of feudalism, the western people are passionate and love for adventure. And they value competition, nonconformity and freedom of expression.
Conclusion
• The people of a given culture look at things from their own perspective: the object signified is the same, but its message is quite different due to cultural differences. Different people have different cultures, which bear connection and distinction, individuality and generality. It is the general feature that provides the possible ground and basis for communication between two cultures, and it is the individual characters that constitute an obstacle to this communication.
Buddhism VS Christianity
• On the one hand, Buddhist influence on Chinese culture is far and wide. It affected almost all aspects of Chinese life, be it philosophy, religion, art, literature or science. The Buddhist idea of karma and retribution(因果报应) becomes the never-tiredof theme • On the other hand, Christianity is very popular in western countries. Christianity provided people with the much longed-for sense of belonging, and baptism even gave people a sense of rebirth and starting over with a new life and family. Western ideas of freedom, equality and universal fraternity come from Christianity.
