Pompeii’s Yesterday
ຫໍສະໝຸດ Baidu Today’s Pompeii
Thank you for your listening
Room 415
❖ Now,let me tell you something about this city.
Pompeii History
❖ In the 700s B.C., the Oscans inhabited the area around Pompeii. The Oscan civilization in Italy precedes the Roman Empire, and in fact the Oscans were eventually completely incorporated into Roman society and today, only vestiges of their language and architecture remain. They established Pompeii as a trading port on the River Sarno. In addition to its proximity to the river and the Bay of Naples, Pompeii is also an ideal location due to its elevation on a plateau of volcanic deposit created by earlier eruptions of Vesuvius.

Pompeii History
❖ Most people can tell you about the volcanic eruption that buried this and several other Roman cities in ash almost a thousand years ago, but few can tell you anything more about Pompeii’s history than that.
The Destroy
On August 24, 79 AD, Mount Vesusvius exploded in a massive eruption now known as a "Plinian" type. Vesuvius ejected a column of ash and debris 32 kilometers into the air. It erupted for over 18 hours, constantly raining small pumice stones on the city. When the upward momentum of the column detiorated, it collapsed in several stages as pyroclastic flows. These surges covered Pompeii in over 6 meters of deposit. Of the estimated 20,000 inhabitants of Pompeii, it is believed that perhaps 5,000 perished. The city was lost until its 18th century discovery, although it was first thought to be the other buried town of Stabiae. Since then, excavations have been carried out almost continuously, revealing to the world the everyday life of a Roman in the early Principate.
