Diabetes in America
• Studies performed over the past 40 years have shown that the prevalence of diabetes has increased dramatically in American and that a substantial proportion of population has diabetes. • Diabetes is most prevalent in minority populations, such as African-Americans, Native Americans, and Mexican Americans. • Increasing prevalence of diabetes has led to increase in micro vascular complications such as blindness, end-stage renal disease, and lower limb amputations.
• Smoking is not as common in America as in many other countries. It is a practice that is becoming less and less socially acceptable. The legal smoking age in America is 18. • Smoking is not allowed in any public buildings, on any public transportation, in shops, movie theaters, schools, and office buildings. The general rule is if you are indoors, then you probably are not allowed to smoke. The exceptions are bars, nightclubs, and some restaurants. If a restaurant does allow smoking, it will only be in an area that is designated for smokers. If you are with someone, even outdoors, it is polite to ask if they mind before you start smoking.

2. Violence
• In addition to poverty in American society political assassinations are surprising and extraordinary. In American history, four American presidents have been assassinated. They are Abraham Lincoln, assassinated in April, 1865; James A. Garfield, in September 1881; William Mckinley, in September 1901; and John F. Kennedy, in November 1963. Indeed, it is a terrible and cruel social phenomenon. It is reported that I the United States, a violence case takes place every twenty-seven seconds; and a person in killed every twenty-four minutes. Recently, campus violence have appeared within the colleges and universities of America. According to the data of FBI, in the year of 2007, there were 56,439 criminal cases in 107 universities, and cases of rape increaed about 50%. This has caussed great worries and anxieties among students and teachers. Gang violence is becoming more and more of a problem in America today. Local Street gangs make it dangerous for someone to walk down the Street. Or come home from work, or pick up your kids at school.
From the age aspect:
• The young may be less skillful than older adults in avoiding being arrested.
• The young tend to commit crimes, such as auto theft, which are highly visible to the police.

Over 26% of Americans are obese. Mississippi is the fattest of all, with a third of its residents considered obese.As a scourge of the modern society, obesity has become the world's biggest public-health issue today--the main cause of heart disease. Since the World Health Organization labeled obesity an "epidemic" in 2000, reports on its fearful consequences have come thick and fast. • Will public-health warnings, combined with media pressure, persuade people to get thinner. Sales of healthier foods are booming and new figures suggest that over the past year Americans got very slightly thinner for the first time in recorded history. But it will be many years before the country solves the health problems caused by half a century’s dining to excess.

The statistics of the FBI shows that:
• Males are arrested about four times as often as females. • The young commit more crimes than the old. • The arrest rate for the black population is three times higher than for whites.

• The Watergate scandal was a 1970s United States political scandal resulting from the breakin to the Democratic National Committee headquarters at the Watergate office complex in Washington, D.C. • Effects of the scandal ultimately led to the resignation of the President of the United States, Richard Nixon, on August 9, 1974, the first and only resignation of any U.S President.
