What Do People Do?
Some educational establishments mark the day by teaching their pupils or students about the work of Martin Luther King and the struggle against racial segregation and racism. Some schools and colleges close but others stay open and teach their students about the life and work of Martin Luther King. .
Martin Luther King Day is a federal holiday held on the third Monday of January. It celebrates the life and achievements of Martin Luther King, an influential American civil rights leader. Martin Luther King was an important civil rights activist. He was a leader in the movement to end racial segregation(种族隔离)in the United States. Martin Luther King Day:每年1月第三个星期一。 Lincoln’s Birthday:每年2月1号。 Washington’s Birthday:每年2月第三个星期一。

In the late of 19 century, the rights of African American suffered discrimination and restraint. In daily life, the United States blacks were often isolated, such as not with the white in a school, a public transport and a place. African American equality problem had become a serious social problem.

In 1968, shortly after Martin Luther King died, a campaign on his birthday became a holiday to honor him. After the first bill was introduced, trade unions(工会) lead the campaign to the federal holiday. It was endorsed in 1976. Following support from the musician Stevie Wonder with his song "Happy Birthday" and a petition(请愿书) with six million signatures, the bill became law in 1983. Martin Luther King Day was first celebrated in 1986 as a legal holiday.
