《翻译理论与实践(笔译)》自检自测题

将下列两段文章译成汉语:

1.An Unforgettable Accident

It was a rainy and windy morning. The sky was gloomy, the temperature was low, and the street was nearly deserted. I was on my way to school. A little school boy came out of a house, and slammed the door. He waked hurriedly along. When he passed me, I heard him reciting the multiplication tables. He was still reciting when he started to cross the street.

He was preoccupied in his study. He did not look before he crossed. Suddenly, a speeding car came round the corner. I was terrified. I shouted at him to stop. But it was too late. The car ran straight towards him. Bang! He was knocked down.

I stepped towards the boy, crying help. But the driver of the car continued his journey, ran away from his responsibility, without a further look at the unconscious boy.

The boy was still bleeding when the police with their ambulance, who had been informed by a passer-by, arrived. The police began to investigate. I had witnessed the accident, but did not have a look at the licensed number of the car. So I was no help, and the police let me back to class.

When I picked up the evening paper, my eyes were caught by one of the headlines---- Schoolboy Killed In Car Accident. These words sent me into a sorrowful mood, and have since remained in my memory after all these years.

2.Habits

Habits, whether good or bad, are gradually contracted. When a person does a certain thing once and again, he is impelled by same unseen force to do the same thing repeatedly; thus a habit is formed. Once a habit is formed, it is difficult,

and sometimes impossible to shake off. It is therefore very important that we should exercise great care in the formation of habits. Children often form bad habits, some of which remain with them as long as they live. Older people also form bad habits, and in some cases ruined by them.

There are other habits which, when formed in early life, are great blessings. Many successful men declare that they owe much of their prosperity to the formation of certain habits in early life, such as punctuality, early rising, honesty, and thoroughness.

Among the habits which children should shun are slovenliness, rudeness, laziness, lying, stealing, and slandering. These are habits which soon fasten themselves on people. Unfortunately, older people often form habits which ought to have been avoided, such as swearing, drunkenness, gambling, and others even more dreadful.

We should keep from all these vices, and strive to acquire such habits as will prove good for ourselves and others.
