AIn May 1987,the Golden Gate Bridge had a 50th birthday party. The bridge was closed to motor traffic so people could enjoy a walk across anizers expected perhaps 50,000 people to show up.Instead,as many as 800,000 crowded the roads to the bridge.By the time 250,000 were on the bridge, engineers noticed something terrible:the roadway was flattening under what turned out to be the heaviest load it had ever been asked to carry.Worse,it was beginning to sway(晃动).The authorities closed access to the bridge and tens of thousands of people made their way back to land.A disaster was avoided. The story is one of scores in To Forgi v e Design:Understanding Failure,a book that is at once a love letter to engineering and a paean(赞歌) to its breakdowns. Its author,Dr.Henry Petroski, has long been writing about disasters. In this book,he includes the loss of the space shuttles(航天飞机) Challenger and Columbia, and the sinking of the Titanic.Though he acknowledges that engineering works can fail because the person who thought them up or engineered them simply got things wrong,in this book Dr.Petroski widens his view to consider the larger context in which such failures occur.Sometimes devices fail because a good design is constructed with low quality materials incompetently applied.Or perhaps a design works so well that it is adopted elsewhere again and again, with seemingly harmless improvements, until, suddenly,it does not work at all anymore.Readers will encounter not only stories they have heard before, but some new stories and a moving discussion of the responsibility of the engineer to the public and the ways young engineers can be helped to grasp them.“Success is success but that is all that it is,”Dr.Petroski writes. It is failure that brings improvement.1.What happened to the Golden Gate Bridge on its 50th birthday?A.It carried more weight than it could.B.It swayed violently in a strong wind.C.Its roadway was damaged by vehicles.D.Its access was blocked by many people.

做题时注意在选项中查找表示结果、结论、总结等的信号词如therefore, as a result, thus, hence, in short, to sum up, to conclude, in a word等词语。
模拟演练01 人与自我--方法/策略Passage 1(2024·河北沧州·一模)Thinking about adopting a healthy lifestyle? Congratulations! There are so many reasons for adopting a healthy lifestyle. Here are some tips to help you get started with your new habits. Before you begin, ask yourself some questions, what are your reasons for thinking about a healthier lifestyle?1 Your why should reflect your values and what’s important to you. Knowing your specific why will help you to not just get started, but will help keep you focused and motivated as it guides your journey.Focus on behaviors, not results. 2 But switching your focus from outcomes to the new habits you’re creating and actions you’re taking is more beneficial. It’s actually some daily health-promoting behaviors that will create change and can lead to the health outcomes you desire.3 Remember Rome wasn’t built in a day! You just need to take the first step.Remember it’s not all or nothing. A healthy lifestyle is never all or nothing. 4 So focus on eating foods and creating habits that make you feel good. Can you do it forever? (1)When people first come across the Law of Attraction (吸引力法则), their hearts and minds often immediately think of one specific thing that they’d love to achieve in their lives. However, the next thought is often “But I can’t do that”. You may come up with all kinds of excuses. 1 Here are the reasons why you should believe you can use the Law of Attraction to obtain whatever you want.Small steps create big changes. One of the most common reasons for abandoning dreams is that they simply seem too huge to realize. Usually it’s manageable to think of following your dream as taking a series of significant but small steps. 2 Then look at each of them. Not so unrealistic now, is it?3 When people are interviewed on their deathbeds or write about their lives in autobiographies (自传), it is often observed that major regrets tend to relate to things that were not done. In older age, it’s likely that you will be uncomfortable with the idea that you didn’t even try to do the thing that you loved or attempt to obtain what you truly wanted.4 But you don’t ever need to feel this way! Make today the first day of your new journey towards avoiding regret.Steps towards your dream are never backwards steps. Another common worry is that if you follow your dreams, you’ll be “taking steps back”. 5 However, what looks like backward steps in your old life can more productively and accurately be seen as forwarding steps in the brand new life you’re creating.A.You can avoid regret.B.It is no use regretting it.C.Luckily, the truth is that it’s never too late to follow your dream.D.It often comes up when people are at the top of careers they hate.E.It is painful to feel like you haven’t ever found your true purpose.F.For example, challenge yourself to write down the path to success in ten stages.G.You have enough life experience and knowledge to pursue your dream.(2)Breaking the Habit of People-PleasingIf you feel like you may be a people-pleaser, you’re not alone. Most people have a growing desire for pleasing others. 6 It can also result in weak boundaries, problems with decision-making, and low self-worth. For that reason, it’s important to recognize and overcome your own people-pleasing behaviors. Here are simple exercises that you can start working on today.1. 7 Trust that people will not abandon you, even if you don’t drop everything for them. Believe you are lovable for who you are, not what you do. Practice this by going to a movie or restaurant alone.2. Keep plans with yourself8 Otherwise, you are sending a message to your brain that a plan you make with yourself does not hold as much value as a plan you make with someone else. Don’t break any plans you make with yourself, whether it’s going to the gym or studying for an exam.3. Practice saying “no”If you’re a people-pleaser you may find it hard to say “no” because you feel it comes across as cruel or uncaring. 9 Be clear, be direct, and use “I” statements. Try statements like: “I would really love to be able to help you, but unfortunately, I’m already committed at that time.”By consistently integrating these strategies into your life, I’m confident you’ll break your people-pleasing habits. 10 This will yield an overall improvement in self-confidence and life satisfaction.A.So it is not necessary to say no.B.But it absolutely does not have to.C.Learn to love your own company.D.You’ll develop more healthy, interdependent relationships.E.You are not confident about the plans you make with yourself.F.Your own plans are as important as plans you make with others.G.People-pleasing behavior can lead to mental and physical problems.(3)How to Stay Active During the HolidaysBeing physically active on a consistent basis can be challenging, especially during holidays, as we travel to see relatives or host friends in our homes. 11 In this case, consider these tips for making physical activity regular in your lifestyle over the long term, through holidays and beyond.Find something you enjoy. This is the first rule of any sustainable exercise routine. If your workout feels like another task on your to-do list, it’ll be difficult to stick with. 12 Dance. Garden. Take a yoga class online. All of these count as physical activity, and even small amounts add up.13Exercise doesn’t have to take place in a gym. Taking three 10-minute walks during the day — one in the morning, another during your lunch and another after dinner — produces similar benefits to spending 30 minutes at the gym. In other words, taking short movement breaks throughout your day makes for a more active lifestyleand helps meet your goals.Be realistic. Most are overly optimistic when first mapping out a workout plan. 14 Besides, you don’t have to exercise before, during and after work every day in order to hit your goals. Instead, look at your current lifestyle and integrate more movement into your daily life.Make it a priority. Most of us are managing countless responsibilities every day, so it’s vital to consider physical activity an important part of your day. Put it on your schedule, just as you make an appointment with a doctor. And, let others know when you’ll be busy exercising and how they can help you find time to do so. 15A.Find breaks to move throughout the day.B.Make full use of weekday breaks to work out.C.It is necessary to avoid being injured in sports.D.Therefore, be creative in finding physical activities.E.Having the support from others is an essential element of success.F.Additionally, schedules are often interrupted by holiday gatherings.G.In fact, exercise isn’t necessarily at maximal intensity to be effective.(4)Many people who are learning English want to know how to improve their reading skills. 16 The effective way to improve your reading skills is to love reading and practice more.Reading is one of the most important language skills because we use it to expand our vocabulary and improve the way we speak, write and listen. 17 Seeing new ways to say things can help your understanding of English and improve not only your reading, but also your other language skills.18 If we do not understand something, we can go over it again and even look up the words we do not know the meanings of. This means that we have a much greater chance of understanding information that we read than information that we hear.So how do we practice reading so that our skill level improves? When we read a passage, we need to understand it. We must understand what the important words mean in each sentence. This does not mean that we need to know the meaning of every word. In many cases, we can find out what words mean from the words around them. 19 To do this, we must understand how words work together. In many cases, we must “see” part of the message that has not been written, or we must form an opinion ourselves.Reading is an essential part of your study of the English language. It can help you understand and learn more. It can also become a satisfying hobby. A.Unfortunately, there is no easy way to do this.B.Unlike listening, reading allows us to take our time.C.Among the four skills, listening is the most important one.D.It is hoped that you will love reading and improve your reading skills.E.When we read, we can see how things are said, from sentence structure to expression.F.If we do not, we will not be able to understand what the entire article or story is about.G.Once we understand what the words mean, we need to figure out what the message is.(5)Your neighbors are probably the first line of defense in case of any problematic situation. 21 It gives you an assurance that you have people close by looking out for you. Here are easily applicable tips on creating stronger neighbor relationships. The first step is introducing yourself when you move to a new neighborhood or when a newcomer moves in. Leave them a note under their door to introduce yourself. 22 It doesn’t have to cost you a fortune and opting for a potted plant or baked biscuits will do. These actions present excellent opportunities to connect with them.Be respectful of your neighbors. It’s in poor taste to have regular insensitive parties at your place causing disturbances. Before your party, it’s good practice to notify your neighbors. Besides, avoid chatting them up for hours on end, which may be inconvenient, especially if you don’t know their schedules. 23 When you borrow anything, return it in due time. If you accidentally break their things, replace them without being asked to.24 You could offer to babysit your neighbors’ kids, help with snow removals or even keep an eye on their home when they’re away. Such acts of reaching out to your neighbors make for stronger relationships. As Emma Seppälä put it, “social connectedness generates a positive feedback loop (圈) of social, emotional and physical well-being.” It feels so easy to just stay home without having to engage with your neighbors but connecting with them is worth the effort. 25A.Remember every small gesture counts.B.A crisis is a test of communication skills.C.It can actually boost your mood in the long run.D.Slipping it in their mailbox further solidifies friendship.E.It’s essential to ensure you maintain decent relationships with them.F.Alternatively, you can give them a gift while making yourself known to them.G.Only by establishing healthy boundaries will you achieve peaceful coexistence.(6)The rise of social media has revolutionized human connectivity, but its overuse can make people feel increasingly unhappy and isolated. 26One significant problem with frequent social media use is comparing ourselves to others. Many individuals experience “Facebook envy”. 27 Gradually, it may result in self-doubt. To boost self-confidence, it is essential to reduce time on others’profiles, and focus on self-reflection.Social media can also make it hard to form real friendships. Constant online interaction may make us feel lonely and left out when we see others having fun online. Stina Sanders, a former model, explained “When I see my friend’s photos of a party I didn’t go to, it can make me feel quite lonely and anxious”. 28 Quality sleep is essential for mental health, but excessive phone use before bedtime can severely disturb it. The anxiety and envy induced by social media content can keep our brains alert, making it challenging to fall asleep. 29 Avoiding the phone for at least 40 minutes to an hour before bed can improve sleep.“ 30 However, it can also change the way we recall our life. If we direct all of our attention trying to take the perfect photo, less will be available to enjoy other aspects of the experience in real time,” said Dr. Bono. To decrease these effects, practicing self-discipline and limiting phone use can help us to stay focused and clear-minded.If you feel like social media is beginning to affect you, why not consider allocating less social media time? The slight change can do you a lot of good.A.Regular use of Facebook can keep good relationships.B.Social media offers a convenient way to record memories.C.This can lead to feelings of dissatisfaction with themselves.D.Plus, the blue light that is given off by screens affects our sleep.E.Therefore, it’s important to develop genuine offline relationships.F.Social media can lead to serious physical and mental health issues.G.The reliance on it can negatively impact people’s mental health in the long run.(7)For most people traveling abroad, their first choice is probably to rush directly to tourist sights. For me.I find lots of joy in grocery shopping on holiday. As a vegetarian, finding restaurants that meet my needs is not always easy abroad. 31 The first thing I do, after dropping my bags off, is to go to a grocery store. That enables me to cook breakfast in the morning without walking around for hours trying to find “vegan breakfast” near me.The variety of foods attracts me every time I travel somewhere new. In Malta, I found the most delicious chocolate-filled cakes, the ones I would struggle to find even in the UK. 32 I was so delighted that I试卷第5页,共8页could enjoy such an unexpected treat. Another surprise was their selection of ice cream available even in the smallest grocery stores.33 Looking for smoked tofu and corn pancakes turns into quite a mission whenever I visit Cluj-Napoca in Romania. There is usually only one variety of smoked tofu, sold in a very small tub (食品盒) and only in the cafeteria section. 34 That is because they are never available at the smaller ones.Grocery shopping on holiday sounds unusual. But it means being involved in the day-to-day lives of a country’s citizens. I can pretend I am a local and put myself in their shoes. I can watch kids begging their parents for sweets, an international experience that needs no language, or watch couples pick up snacks and drinks for a party on a Friday night. 35A.I ended up eating these every day for breakfast.B.The challenge of finding food is interesting. too.C.The smoked product is unique and specially packed.D.So I always make sure to book a place with a kitchen.E.It’s an act of understanding people as much as of buying food.F.Corn pancakes always require a trip to the bigger grocery store.G.By wandering around in a new country, I start to see what they value.(8)Traveling allows you the opportunity to explore new places and unplug from daily routines and distractions. But let’s face it: Sometimes you want and need to stay connected when traveling abroad. Beyond scrolling through news and keeping up on social media, having a cellphone can be an essential tool to connect with other travelers and find cheap accommodation. 36 Here are tips to avoid the high international roaming (漫游) charges.Buy a local SIM Card. One of the most affordable ways to stay connected while traveling is to bring your phone and buy a prepaid SIM card at your destination. Before you travel, check with your provider to make sure your phone will work abroad. Swapping out the SIM card will give you a new international number. Make sure you keep your original SIM card in a safe place. 37Use Wi-Fi Only. If you check email or social media infrequently and don’t feel the need to constantly upload travel photos. waiting until you can connect to free wireless networks can save you a lot. 38 While you’re at it, switch off any apps that grab data. Look for restaurants, cafes or public spaces that offer free access to Wi-Fi.39 To save time and money, load up your phone in advance with travel and other apps, music, books, maps, travel guides and anything else you may need. Free Wi-Fi can be slow in many public areas. And you don’twant to get stuck waiting for a map or guide to load when you need it.Disconnect. While you can find plenty of uses for your phone while traveling, there are also good reasons to disconnect. Be engaged as you explore new places. 40 Technology is so ubiquitous (无所不在的) in work and personal lives that it can be hard to focus on a new culture if all you’re doing is staring down at your phone.A.Download Before You Go.B.Know your limits and try to overcome them.C.Make sure you put your phone in airplane mode.D.That card is associated with your new phone number.E.Sometimes you fail to wander in a totally new environment.F.Immerse yourself in the sights and sounds and enjoy the moment.G.Your phone is also a key connection to friends and family back home.(9)The smell of sweat, the noise of crashing weights and the muscular people in tank tops make the gym’s strength class or weight room seem forbidding, whether you’re a seasoned lifter or a complete beginner.41 Most benefits of strength training go beyond appearances. It subjects our bones to more pressure than our daily routines and increases muscle mass and bone density. Now that you know resistance training is important, here’s how to get started.Set a goal that is attainable and improves your daily life. 42 That might mean pressing weight overhead to ensure you can put your luggage in the airplane’s overhead bin or doing weighted squats (深蹲) for hiking preparation. The ideal way is to work one-on-one with an experienced certified trainer. 43 Look for one who not only guides you through workouts but also understands your unique journey and helps you reach your full potential.Private training with friends or joining in small group classes is also a cost-effective way to get individual attention. While you might tend to position yourself in the back corner of the room, I suggest heading to the front where a coach can monitor your form and offer feedback.44 If you favor strength-training apps, opt for one with video demonstrations. If none of these are appealing, start at home with basic-level bodyweight exercises like squats. 45 Grab a gallon water jug, hug it to your chest and dive into a squat. This not only adds resistance but challenges your core muscles to sustain stability.A.It’s like having a fitness associate. B.It’s worth pushing past that fear though.C.Take my word for it, no one else is looking at you.D.As you gain more confidence and strength, raise the bar.E.You’ll begin to see an impact far beyond your jeans fitting better.F.Think about which aspect of your life could be noticeably improved.G.Take videos of yourself performing those movements and watch them between sets.(10)A workable and pretty easy solution to improving your listening skills is that you begin to realize how much of your ability to be an effective listener is really about you, not the other person and how fascinating or boring they are. 46We tend to assume that listening is little more than showing up and paying attention to the other person.47 It’s worth noticing how we instinctively (本能地) listen in conversation and whether or not that given listening mode is really what’s called for.You need to identify your personal “hot spots”. 48 Whether it’s talking about climate change or Father’s Day, when you are not interested at all, you realize it is hard to concentrate. That kind of self-knowledge comes by having a scientific approach and observing yourself in action.49 For example, your surrounding environment, the topic at hand, or even particular company may affect your ability to listen. When you do this, you can more easily see what gets in the way of your ability to listen and understand. Thus that makes many of our work-related conversations much easier. In a performance review or heated debate, you can remind yourself if you’re having an emotional response to feedback and are having trouble hearing the other person out. Observing and learning from your behavior, and noticing how you are affected by your surroundings help you uncover your unique needs for doing your best listening. 50A.Considering external factors is also important.B.Besides, get curious about your conversation style.C.In fact, if they’re boring, in some ways that is on you.D.But it’s also deeply tied to paying attention to ourselves.E.Effective listening is about creating the space for others to express themselves.F.The topics are what uniquely set you off and emotionally inspire you in some ways.G.Those are going to help everything from meetings to client presentations run smoothly.

Not all great writers are great spellers. If you want to be published,it's vital to submit a perfect, professionally presented manuscript(原稿).No editor is likely to tolerate a writer who does not take the trouble to spell words correctly.I keep two reference books close-by on my desk: dictionary and thesaurus(同义词词典).I don't trust my laptop's spellchecker.37Of course, these days there are plenty of online dictionaries and thesauruses, but I’m old-fashioned enough to prefer a hard cover and pages I can leaf through with my fingers.I use the Concise Oxford Dictionary and the Collins Thesaurus.38It should give you a precise definition of each word, thus differentiating it from other words whose meanings are similar, but not identical. It will also usually show how the word is pronounced. In addition,I have an old two-volume copy of the Shorter Oxford Dictionary, picked up a few years ago in a bookshop sale for just99pence.Of course, with its2,672pages, it's not exactly short. It contains around163,000words, plus word combinations and idiomatic phrases.39 However,if I need to check the origin of a word or to look up examples of its usage, there's nothing better. For well over a hundred years the most influential English dictionary was Samuel Johnson's Dictionary of the English Language published in1755.“To make dictionaries is dull(乏味)work,"wrote Johnson, illustrating one definition of“dull”.40A few minutes spent casting your eye over a page or two can be a rewarding experience.A.I don't often use this dictionary.B.It takes no account of the context.C.But I still don't want to replace them.D.But a dictionary can be a pleasure to read.E.Of course,a dictionary is not only for spelling.F.That means good grammar and no spelling mistakes.G.Dictionaries don't always give you enough information.二、试题解析。

根据上文内容“At the top of a second page, put the heading “Acts of kindness.” On this one, list all the positive things you’ve done for others. It might be the time when you helped a friend with their homework, when you did the ironing without being asked, or when you baked cookies after the family had had a tiring day.(在第二页的顶部,写上“善举”的标题。在这张单子上,列出你为别人做过的所有积极的事情。它可能是当你帮助朋友做作业的时候,当你没有被要求却主动熨衣服的时候,或者当你在家人累了一天之后烤饼干的时候。)”可知,本段主要讲述的是列出一些自己所做的好事。选项F“Whatever it is, no matter how small it might seem, write it down.(不管是什么,不管它看起来有多小,都要把它写下来。)”

★2023年4月13日★阅读理解D篇3+七选五组合练一第一节:阅读理解典例1:★★★★(北京石景山·一模)What do we mean by responsibility? To put it simply, it is a duty to consider the consequences of our actions. In other words, we have a duty to control our behaviour. When we are children, we have f ew responsibilities. Our parents look after us and we generally don’t have to worry about food or shelter. As we grow up, we gradually need to be responsible for more and more things. We learn how to run our own baths, make our own decisions, and realize that we have moral duties. As adults, we are responsible for all aspects of our lives. If there are any problems, we have to handle them ourselves. We also have responsibilities that go beyond ourselves. Parents have the responsibility to look after their children, ensuring that they have a stable upbringing. Beyond the family, people have a responsibility towards the community as a whole. It is in fact up to us as a society to make this world a safe and pleasant place for everyone. When we fail in our responsibilities, the consequences are most serious. Teenagers who abandon their studies might ruin their own lives. It is even more horrible to hear about parents who, by not caring for their own children properly, are putting them in danger. Likewise, by not following the traffic rules, careless drivers kill more than a million people around the world every year. Certain professions in our society, such as police officers, exist to protect the public, and the people who do these jobs often risk their own lives in order to do their duty. However, their efforts depend on the support of ordinary people. If we ignore our own responsibilities, society will become dangerous. On a global level, our entire human civilization may be heading towards disaster unless we work together to save our environment.Furthermore, whether we are shouldering heavy responsibilities, like doctors or lots, or simply taking responsibility for our own learning as students, we will always be judged on how well we perform our duties. For this reason, the hardest part of acting responsibly is admitting that we failed or that we made a mistake. Let’s say you visit your friend’s house and accidentally damage an expensive teapot while your friend is in another room. The honest thing to do is of course to admit your fault and apologize. Because this requires courage, some people take another route: they pretend that nothing happened. Perhaps a broken teapot might not be such a big deal, but in any given situation, we can choose to act responsibly, and it is somewhat through this choice that we decide what our lives are going to be like.To summarize, responsibilities are an essential part of life since our actions have consequences. Responsibilities aren’t fun, but we can make the burden lighter by sharing them. If everyone considered how their actions would affect themselves and other people, the world would be a better place.1.The passage tells us that .A.children have no responsibilitiesB.adults often risk their own lives in order to do their dutyC.our responsible actions would make the world a better placeD.responsibilities aren’t fun unless we can make the burden lighter by sharing them2.According to the author, the hardest part of taking responsibility is .A.to control our behaviour B.to handle problems ourselvesC.to affect ourselves and other people D.to admit our fault and apologize3.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?A.Consequence of Responsibility B.Significance of ResponsibilityC.Essential Part of Responsibility D.Development of Responsibility4.Which of the following shows the organization of the passage?I: Introduction P: Point Sp: Sub-point (次要点) C: ConclusionA.B.C.D.典例2:★★★★(北京大兴·一模)The old romantic saying is a cute one, but according to recent studies, opposites don't necessarily attract.Research shows that people tend to seek out relationships with—and eventually marry — partners who have similar defining characteristics, such as age, political orientation, religion, education, and income.“ Generally speaking, when we think about opposites attracting or not, we're thinking in terms of personality rather than these big key factors," says Vinita Mehta, a clinical psychologist and writer based in Washington, D.C.One big factor as to why this may be is simply your stage of life: where you live, what lifestyle you have, and what kind of people you're exposed to.“ If you’re on a college campus, by and large, you’re going to find people who are in your age group,'' Mehta says. "You're going to find people who at least eventually become part of the same general income strata. ”Researchers from the University of Kansas made a courageous claim. A study released earlier this year analyzed real-world relationships and asked couples (romantic partners, friends, and acquaintances) about attitudes, behaviors, values, prejudices, and personality characteristics that were important to them. The pairs that had closer and more intimate relationships were not necessarily more similar than newly formed pairs, and people shared similarities on almost every personal issue that was measured. The lead psychologists on this study believe this doesn't happen by chance ;it's so common and widespread that seeking out like-minded people may be our psychological default when we make new friends or romantic partners. We certainly get the most out of these relationships. They make us more comfortable and trusting of the other person, and that makes it easier to cooperate and achieve goals. As far personalities go, connecting on major characteristics, like levels of neuroticism (神经质)and conscientiousness, generally lead to happier couples. But that doesn't mean you and your significant other need to agree on everything. Having different habits——fewer defining parts of your personality, like your favorite sport or foods---can introduce you to new activities and ways of thinking, which can make you a morewell-rounded person.5.What does the underlined word " strata" in Paragraph 5 probably mean?A.Factors. B.Levels. C.Resources. D.Taxes.6.The research conducted by the University of Kansas implies that _______.A.the phenomenon takes place accidentallyB.the subjects have almost everything in commonC.the participants were asked questions about their partnersD.the similarity between partners may not change with closer relationship7.In the last paragraph, the author stresses that a happier couple may _______.A.have some differences B.have everything in commonC.share the same personalities D.result from the conflict in thinking8.What is the main purpose of the passage?A.To find out what stage of life we are in.B.To prove we are attracted to what is familiar.C.To show what kind of people we should make friends with.D.To introduce the advantages like-minded people can bring to us.典例3:★★★(北京通州·一模)“Jewel wings fly around like little helicopters until they see preys (猎物), usually smaller flying insects,” said Bellido, a biologist at the University of Minnesota. “Then they dash at their meals in a burst of speed.”You might mistake jewel wings for their cousins, dragonflies. New research shows that these two insects share something more significant than their appearance, however. In a paper published in Current Biology, Dr. Bellido and the dragonfly colleagues reveal that the neural (神经的) systems behind jewel wings’ vision are shared with dragonflies, with whom they have a common ancestor that lived before dinosaurs. But over the centuries, this brain wiring has adapted itself in different ways in each creature, enabling sharply different hunting strategies.Jewel wings’ behavior involves attacking what’s directly in front of them, the team found. But recordings made in the lab by Dr. Gonzalez and her colleagues confirmed that dragonflies rise up in a straight line to seize unsuspecting insects from below. Researchers are particularly interested in the neurons (神经元) that send visual information to the wings. To look closer at the neurons linking vision and flight, the researchers equipped jewel wings with sensors and showed them a video of a moving dot, comparing it with earlier dragonfly research. When a neuron fired, a popping sound filled the researchers’ ears, allowing them to tell exactly which movements-left, right, up, down or some combination-each neuron responded to. Jewel wings best see what’s right in front of them, they found, while dragonflies’ clearest vision is just above them. The team was interested to find that while jewel wings’ neurons didn’t always respond like tho se in dragonflies, the number of neurons and organization were similar. That suggests that the system that conveys this information from the eyes to the wing muscles did not evolve recently, but has roots that are millions of years older than the oldest dinosaurs. And that ancient common ancestor likely had already developed remarkable speed in both vision and flight. Then, in the following years, the system has evolved to suit individual insect species. This shared neural system may be more than 250 million years old, but it is also flexible enough to transform itself to meet the needs of a variety of creatures in different eras and environments, the findings suggest.9.Jewel wings usually catch their meals ________ them.A.on the right of B.on the left ofC.straight ahead of D.at the back of10.What is Paragraph 4 mainly about?A.What actions jewel wings take to catch preys.B.How jewel wings ‘neurons respond to vision.C.When jewel wings start to hunt for their preys.D.Where researchers did the research into jewel wings.11.What can we learn about dragonflies and jewel wings from the passage?A.The two insects possess similar neural systems.B.Jewel wings’ vision is sharper than dragonflies’.C.Dragonflies ‘brain wiring is the same with jewel wings’.D.The oldest dinosaurs react as rapidly as the two insects. 12.What is the main purpose of the passage?A.To analyse the habits of two similar insects.B.To tell the difference between dragonflies and jewel wings.C.To assess the effects of different insects ‘h unting strategies.D.To present the result of a study on two insects neural systems.第二节:七选五★★★★(北京朝阳一模)What Y our Nose KnowsY our sense of smell enriches your experience of the world around you. Different scents can change your mood or transport you back to a distant memory. Y our ability to smell also plays a key role in your health. 46The things we smell are actually the tiny molecules(分子) released by substances all around us. When we breathe in these molecules, they stimulate specialized sensory cells high inside the nose. 47 But a given molecule can stimulate a combination of these receptors, creating a unique representation in the brain. W e perceive that representation as a smell.48 A stuffy(不通气的) nose or a harmless growth in the nose can block air and thus scents from reaching the sensory cells. Certain medications, like some blood pressure pills, can change smell, but these effects are usually temporary. Y our smell should come back once you’ve recovered or stopped the medication. But some things can cause a long-lasting loss of smell. A head injury or virus, for example, can sometimes damage the nerves related to smell. 49 According to Dr. Davangere Devanand, an expert on neurodegenerative(神经变性的) diseases and smell loss, the main reason appears to be that the functioning of the brain regions involved in smell and memory becomes damaged as we grow older. But problems with your ability to smell may be more than normal aging. They can sometimes be an early sign of serious health conditions, such as Parkinson’s disease or Alzheimer’s disease. Devanand’s group is studying the relationships between smell dysfunction and certain disease.Researchers are also looking for ways to avoid smell loss. Some studies suggest that smell training may help you improve your ability to distinguish and identify scents. 50 But the question remains as to whether and how this might work.A. Many things can cause smell loss.B. People may have lost their ability to smell before they notice it.C. Each of these sensory cells has only one type of scent receptor.D. It may improve your brain’s ability to interpret low levels of scents.E. As people get older, many of them couldn’t identify certain kind of smell.F. If your ability to smell declines, it can affect your physical well-being and everyday safety.G. And with age, there is a decline in the ability to smell to some extent in the nose, but much more in the brain itself.1.C 2.D 3.B 4.A【分析】本文为一篇议论文。

If gardeners can keep off the birds and other wildlife trying to eat the seeds, they can have a large harvest. The bright yellow blooms will make a rainbow garden, brightening up any space. However, planting the sunflower seeds is a skilled job. Plant seeds no deeper than the full length of itself. Smaller sized sunflowers can be spaced a foot apart. Larger varieties will need to be spaced as far apart as three feet. This allows ripe plants enough space for the seed heads toripen without knocking the ripe seeds off before gardeners have a chance to harvest them. Most sunflower seeds, especially those with eatable seeds, are large enough to handle without the need for seed sorters. This is why sunflowers make an excellent choice for a children's garden as well. Gardeners will want to mix plenty of soil fertilizers (肥料)into the ground as sunflowers tend to be heavy feeders.Sunflowers can be slow starters and the tiny new plants don't seem to grow very rapidly. Gardeners should protect the new plants as they begin to grow. Once they get going, sunflowers are able to outgrow many weeds, making them easier to grow in the home vegetable garden than many other plants. Most pests and diseases are not a bother to the sunflower, however, more than one gardener has said that their lovely looking plants were ravaged overnight by hungry squirrels, mice or birds. To preserve their harvest, gardeners can cover the ripening seed head with stockings or net cloth to help keep the destroyers off the seeds.Planting sunflower seeds is easy and can help even the smallest gardener feel successful in their gardening attempts.8.Why should sunflowers be planted with enough space in between?A.To prevent birds from eating sunflower seeds.B.To protect the ripe seed heads before harvest.C.To offer the sunflowers enough sunlight.D.To help the sunflowers grow stronger.9.Why do people tend to choose sunflowers for children's gardens?A.They want to decorate their garden with sunflowers.B.The seeds are easy to plant and unnecessary to sort.C.Sunflowers don't need too much soil fertilizer.D.Tiny new sunflowers can grow very fast.10.Which can replace the underlined word “ravaged” in Paragraph 5?A. When the hero of the Revolutionary War stopped in Bath, Rumsey showed Washington his invention. It was a model of a boat using the power of rivers current to travel against the current. The boat had a set of wheels with two longpoles fastened under the boat. Rumsey placed the boat in the Potomac River and the current turned the wheels round and round quickly, which in turn, forced the poles to push against the riverbed moving the boat against the current.Washington wrote of the invention in his diary on September 6, 1784, “The model, and its operation upon the water, which had been made to run fast, not only made me believe what I before thought, but that it might be turned to the greatest possible means of transportation.n Washington even gave Rumsey a letter stating that he had seen the boat in operation. The following year, Washington became president of the Potomac Company. One of Washington's first problems was he couldn't find anyone with experience of building canal. In July 1785, Washington remembered Rumsey's walking boat and decided that Rumsey was the man to build the canal.Rumsey had continued his work on the mechanical boat, but a full-scale model had not worked as well as the smaller version. The larger boats poles would stick or slip on the bottom of the river and when the boat moved, it lurched (突然前倾)and leaned dangerously. As making this idea a success seemed to be slipping away, Rumsey turned his sights to a new way to allow a boat to move against the current-steam power. However, Washington employed Rumsey just as he was considering the solution. Washington hired him at an annual salary of200 pounds.12.What can we learn about Rumsey's invention?A.It turned out to be practical.B.It was driven by water power.C.It was a great means of transportation.D.It had wheels to push against the riverbed.13.Seeing the model boat, Washington.A.drew a picture of it in his diaryB.employed Rumsey at onceC.wrote Rumsey a letterD.took an interest in it14.What can we learn about Rumsey from the text?A.He managed to build the mechanical boat.B.He became rich owing to his invention.C.He got great trust from Washington.D.He gave up his first idea.15.What can be the best title for the text?A.Rumsey's Walking BoatB.Rumsey and WashingtonC.A Successful Business ManD.The History of the Mechanical Boat二、阅读七选五Choosing to Study OverseasEvery year, thousands of students choose to study in another country for a semester, a summer, or a year. 高考英语《阅读理解+七选五+应用文写作》真题含答案Ⅰ.阅读理解Asouthern Alaska kicked off Fat Bear Week, when fans compare before and after photos of bears to vote for the one they think has gained the most weight before they bed down for the long freezing winter. Bear 747, also known as “Bear Force One”,took the firstplace spot with 68,105 votes. It weighed around 1,400 pounds.Fat Bear Week started in 2014. At first, it was just Fat Bear Tuesday. Mike Fitz, a former park keeper at Katmai, noticed that live webcams showing the bears generated a lot of online comments, so he let people vote for their favorite fat bear on the Internet. The oneday event attracted 1,700 votes. In 2015 , it was extended to a week. Last year, nearly 800,000 people got involved, turning it into a global campaign. The contest serves two main purposes. First, some of America's national parks are in remote and undeveloped areas, which are difficult or costly to reach. Fat Bear Week brings Alaska's wilderness to fans' computer screens. “ It's not limited to the fortunate few who can go to the river anymore,” Fitz said.Second, Fat Bear Week brings attention to the bears and the ecosystems they live in. “ The 2,200 bears of Katmai are strong for feeding on some of the healthiest salmon (三文鱼) in the world,” said Sara Wolman, a former park keeper. Salmon in the Pacific Northwest are suffering from overfishing, dam construction and warming rivers due to climate change. Luckily, Brooks River, which Katmai's bears like to fish in, has been free from these threats so far.Fat Bear Week has spread like viruses. Fans and creators say it's because it shows a conservation success story.
