06nearly150yearsago,inoneofthedarkestyearsofournation'shistory,preside ntabrahamlincolnsetasidethelastthursdayinnovemberasadayofthanksgiving .americawassplitbycivilwar.butlincolnsaidinhisfirstthanksgivingdecreethatd ifficulttimesmadeitevenmoreappropriateforourblessingstobe(andiquote)," gratefullyacknowledgedaswithoneheartandonevoicebythewholeamericanp eople."thisweek,theamericanpeoplecametogetherwithfamiliesandfriendst ocarryonthisdistinctlyamericantradition.wegavethanksforlovedonesandfor ourlastingprideinourcommunitiesandourcountry.wetookcomfortingoodme morieswhilelookingforwardtothepromiseofchange.butthisthanksgivingalso takesplaceatatimeofgreattrialforourpeople.acrossthecountry,therewereem ptyseatsatthetable,asbraveamericanscontinuetoserveinharm’swayfromthe mountainsofafghanistantothedesertsofiraq.wehonorandgivethanksfortheir sacrifice,andstandbythefamilieswhoenduretheirabsencewithsuchdignityan dresolve.athome,wefaceaneconomiccrisisofhistoricproportions.moreandm oreamericansareworriedaboutlosingajobormakingtheirmortgagepayment. workersarewonderingifnextmonth'spaycheckwillpaynextmonth'sbills.retire esarewatchingtheirsavingsdisappear,andstudentsarestrugglingwiththecost oftuition.it'sgoingtotakeboldandimmediateactiontoconfrontthiscrisis.that's whyi'mcommittedtoforginganewbeginningfromthemomentitakeofficeaspr
esidentoftheunitedstates.earlierthisweek,iannouncedmyeconomicteam.thi stalentedanddedicatedgroupisalreadyhardatworkcraftinganeconomicrecov eryplanthatwillcreateorsave2.5millionnewjobs,whilemakingtheinvestment sweneedtofuellong-
termeconomicgrowthandstability.butthisthanksgiving,we'reremindedthatt herenewalofoureconomywon'tcomefrompoliciesandplansalone.itwilltaket hehardwork,innovation,service,andstrengthoftheamericanpeople.i'veseen thisstrengthfirsthandovermanymonths--inworkerswhoarereadytopowernewindustries,andfarmersandscientistswh ocantapnewsourcesofenergy;inteacherswhostaylateafterschool,andparent swhoputinthatextrahourreadingtotheirkids;inyoungamericansenlistinginati meofwar,seniorswhovolunteertheirtime,andserviceprogramsthatbringhop etothehopeless.it'satestamenttoournationalcharacterthatsomanyamerican stooktimeoutthisthanksgivingtohelpfeedthehungryandcarefortheneedy.on wednesday,ivisitedafoodbankatsaintcolumbanusparishinchicago.andthere, asinsomanycommunitiesacrossamerica,folkspitchedintimeandresourcestog ivealifttotheirneighborsinneed.itisthisspiritthatbindsustogetherasoneameri canfamily--
