Affirmation in Chinese turned into negation in English

There is no grammatical rule that has no exceptions.

No less than 150 people were injured in the air crash.

You ought to know better than to do that sort of thing.

Negation in Chinese turned into affirmation in English

1. 目前这样的方案大有不足之处。

The plan as it is leaves much to be desired.

2. 不去掉自满，你不可能真正学到一点东西。

You cannot learn anything until you rid yourself of complacency.

3. 他似乎想不出恰当的字眼来把他的思想充分表达出来。

He seemed to be at a loss for the precise word to complete his thought.

The days passed quickly, but she worked as hard as ever.

The days elapsed quickly, but she did not in the least slacken her work/her efforts in her work.

She persisted in her work without the slightest relaxation/slack up her work.

The policy of the people is against civil war.

Waging the civil war is against/runs counter to people’s wishes.

3. 他不再，我感到很寂寞。

In his absence, I felt very lonely.

4. 你早晨来看我的时候，我还没有起床。

When you called on me this morning w was still in bed.

When you looked in on me, I was not up yet.

5. 只要他没有病倒，他是不会来的。

He’ll certainly come unless he is ill.

He’ll come without fail unless he comes down with an illness.

6. 一遇到机会，他总是要发表一通意见。

He was never tired of harping upon his arguments once more whenever an opportunity presented itself.

He never missed any chance to air his line of argument.

7. 他太自私了，几乎谁也不喜欢他。

Hardly anybody likes him, because he is too selfish.

8. 他宁愿饿死，不愿行窃。

He will die of hunger before he steals.

He would rather die of hanger than steal.

9. 要铅笔，不要钢笔。

I want a pencil instead of a pen.

10. 他开车时心不在焉，几乎闯祸。

His absence of mind during the driving nearly caused an accident.
