Holden did not like studying at school, and was expelled from school three times. Although he was expelled for failing four of his five subjects at the end of one semester, he didn't feel sorry. After fighting with his classmates, he didn’t dare to go home. Then he found a smallhotel to live in for one day. And he saw some men and women with disordered life there. There was a man who wore women clothes; each of his postures made Holden feel sick. He would hang out in clubs every time he felt bored. He was annoyed when returning back to the hotel. So he agreed with Maurice’s advice to work as an elevator worker, since Maurice would find a prostitute for him. But when the prostitute came, he felt nervous and scared, and finally had to give five dollars to the prostitute. The next day, Holden donated $10 to two nuns while wandering in the street. Holden went skating with his girlfriend Sally after watching a match. When he saw Sally’s insincerity, Holden felt bad. Holden didn’t want to go home or continue to go to school. Therefore, he decided to make a living in the west and pretended to be a deaf and dumb to live his rest life. But before leaving, he would like to see his sister. So he called her. Phoebe had expressed her willing to company with him, but he refused frankly. He looked forward her keeping a positive and optimistic attitude towards her life. One time she just said a simple words “shut up”, which surprised him a lot. In Holden's mind, when encounter troublesome things, he would think the little girls wearing skating shoes wew very lovable. Here, the word “lovable“ was employed to describe the world in opposition to “hypocritical”. As to the meaning of “lovable“, it contained the quality of sincerity and innocent, and all of them were illustrated by children. Holden had encountered two nuns, both of them were quite nice because they put all their heart and soul to help others, which was different to his aunts who would not do good things. Thousands of little kids, and nobody’s around-nobody big, I mean-except me. And I’m standing on the edge of some crazy cliff. What I have to do, I have to catch everybody if they start to go over the cliff-I mean if they’re running and they don’t look where they’re going I have to come out from somewhere and catch them. That’s all I’d do all day. I’d just be the catcher in the rye and all.”His biggest wish was to defend purity and children. He believed that people were naive and pure when they were children before decaying by adult. He didn’t mean to be sacrilegious intent, but his only hope was to keep human away from wickedness. The point of view of Holden was that all the unhappy features of a child were because he or her touch the adult world too early. Therefore, he longed for children to maintain purity, and never involving in adult world. Therefore, Holden preferred to become a catcher in the rye, so that he could save a lot of pure and naive children from the edge of cliff. It can be seen from the novel The Catcher in the Rye that the author assure us that Holden has the noble dream to seek for universal fraternity and spirit. He acted as a mutineer to the society, what’s more, he also manifested as a “catcher” protecting purity and children from the evil adult world. On his own initiative, he left school because of his own willing, but not because of outside driving. He was reluctant to make effort to learn, which clearly demonstrated he revolted against the educational system at that time. He made planed for his future life: he imaged he would do a work in gas station where he does not need to think about the type of work or nobody know him; where he does not need to hear and speak, but just get information from the customer’s piece of paper. So, it can be easily found that his decision and action had very closely relationship with the real life and world, despite he could not found hope in the society he lived in. The truth was that he experieced had fight between the idal and reality for the aim to find a suitable place. But, after encountering more and more failure, he recognized that no matter what he did, it would be no use. There was no such an ideal place in real world. Wang Lihong was a famous reviewer, and he once said Holden just had two choice, one was to accept the real society, the other was to be insane. In the real world, he had no choice but to accept the reality. Wang also gave an example to argue his point of view: Holden went back to school in Sept. and attempted to integrate i nto the society again. (Wang, 2006:180) As Wang's opinion, he chose to compromise totally. 3.3 Growing in the Revolt In his novel, J.D had created two lovely roles who were Holden and Phoebe, and they two were like angles. They possessed good qualities like kindness, honesty and courage. They had sympathy with others, and in particular, had the character of rebellion. They also get rid of the common norms of the society, and finally developed their own thought. His younger sister, Phoebe was the only one who Holden could talk about his ideal with. It was also Phoebe roused Holden’s heart by her loveliness and wisdom. Holden had experienced three days and nights seeking for communication, from which knew how torevolt against reality as well as recognized the important meaning of growth. There was detail description in 25th chapter of his book: Holden sat on a bench, and after a while, he watched his little sister riding wooden horse and playing with other children. And he thought that they all were making effort to get the gold ring, including Phoebe, he worried she may fall off, but he still kept silence and did nothing. . At the beginning Holden took care of Phoebe as parents, however he recognized that the best parents should allow kids to do something they want, and try to take adventure. Therefore, Holden believed it was important for children to attempt to tough new things, which may have some risk. After realizing that, he just watched Phoebe grabbing the golden horse by herself tightly, and did not disturbed her. Here, the character’s conflict was manifested, that is to say, he reluctant to accept the adult life, but he had to grow up and learned to be mature. He was not a child any more, and would be adult soon, even though he thought the adult world were decadent. If he want to grow up quickly, he had to take adventure with enough courage. His brother had published a good short story. But later he began to write some vulgar plays for Hollywood because of money. The ex-girlfriend pleased Holden and wanted to make up his brother. Holden felt disgusted and depressed about his brother, who was full of wit, submitted to the lure of money. Noordinary people would like his brother’s ex-girlfriend nor would artists like his brother who worked for money. The whole society was full of materialism. Even the art was filled with the worship of money. Holden’s disgust and frustration showed his contempt of adult world which was mired in materialism. Holden met Sarne at the night of his traveling. He sympathized with Sarne who gave in herself to vice due to the burden of life. Sarne was confused, angry with him, beating him and even ransacking him. She was the image of a social victim. Though, she had accepted the rules of the society where people were only interested in their own interests without caring about others as much as themselves. Holden had sympathy for her. He once again felt the indifference of society and the distortion of human nature. Therefore, every time Holden approached to people, he could not build an effective communication with them. Holden was banished from the world before he refused the world. So he expressed himself in a distorted way. He was cynical, sarcastic, liking lying, speaking nonsense, teasing, and even insulting others. He often felt that he was a terrible liar, a madman, and a fool. After he gained insight of the distortion of the adult world and also his own spiritual distortions, it seemed that escape was the only choice for Holden. However reality let him know that“you will never find a comfortable, quiet pl ace, because there is no place like this”. 4.2 Educational Environment The school where Holden studied had a high reputation in the educational field, which should provide a good education and healthy growth for students. On the contrary, there were a lot of unhealthy social trends. Everyone around Holden was “a hypocrite”. Reading books and learning knowledge were only to “get advanced in the society so that in the future they can buy a goddam Cadillac”. What students did was “talking about women, alcoho l and sex”. Obviously, such school was not an ideal place for Holden. He looked down upon those hypocrites who were senior students and hated those classmates who followed them, which made him unfit to the surroundings. No one could really understand his rebellious character. Andolini is one of the most important figures whom Holden visited after he left school. He used to be Holden’s teacher. Holden considered him as the best teacher he had in his life, and respected his brave and righteous deeds. Therefore, after Holden suffered a series of defeat, he came to Antonelli’s apartment with confidence and imagined to get understanding and consolation. But the teacher who once left him a good impression told his students: “the sign of an immature man is that he is willing to die bravely for hiscause”, and his mark a mature man with difference that he prefers to live humbly for his cause. It was clear that Holden was “immature” in his mind, and he himself was “mature”. From the perspective of the adult world, the advice Antonelli gave to Holden might make sense. But it couldn’t release Holden’s confusion. He was lonely and painful because he didn’t want to live humbly like most people. Even his most respected and trusted teacher educated him to be a person like that. He was very confused, very disappointed, especially when he woke up from his sleep and found that his teacher might be a gay. He then immediately found an excuse and escaped away from Antonelli’s house. 在纽约生活的那段日子,他经历了很多事情,被欺骗,被欺负,他看透了成人性格里的自私自利,对这个社会单纯美好的幻想早已消失在霍尔顿的脑海中。
霍尔顿在经历这一系列不能理解的事情后精神崩溃,在医院接受治疗,他慢慢变得不像原来那样单纯了,也开始重新审视这个让他觉得陌生而又可怕的社会。
在此篇文章中我将尝试分析霍尔顿的性格特点以及他面对周遭变化的心理状态,从而能够进一步了解物质生活丰富却与此同时精神生活贫乏的美国战后青少年的心理活动。
一、霍尔顿的性格叛逆二战后的美国经济空前繁荣,但事实上这是一场假象,美国人民的精神世界受到了极大的冲击。
霍尔顿精神上十分叛逆,对成人世界极度厌恶,认为他们见利忘义,毫无尊严道德可言。
他看透了社会的虚假,阴暗,丑陋,但又无能为力,所以只能做一些消极的无谓的反抗。
周围的种种让他受到了巨大的精神冲击,他不知道自己未来的人生规划,也不知道所谓的正确方向是什么。

少年时期的霍尔顿并不喜欢读书,多次被学校开除,虽然他淘气,叛逆,然而其依旧是个纯真、善良的孩子,他的家境富裕,但他并不骄傲炫耀存在优越感,反之,他乐于助人。
从小说中我们就可以知道霍尔顿身上不只有丑恶的元素,此外也有对抗社会,寻求美好生活的但单纯的一面。
表面上霍尔顿玩世不恭,特立独行,不愁衣食,但是他却依旧保持善良、纯洁的心。
他善待妹妹,在见妹妹的时候说:"我只想当一个麦田里的守望者!"他想像着自己在麦田中,数不胜数的孩子在玩耍,四周除了他没有任何成年人。
他就站在悬崖旁眺望,看哪个孩子有危险就去抓住他,不让受伤。
"这是他的憧憬,也是单纯心灵的直接呈现,他想要孩子幸福的生活,不受伤害,永远愉快的奔跑,麦田就好似物质世界,他希望生活在满含物质主义精神世界的孩子不会迷失初心,不会走到悬崖。
霍尔顿非常清楚的知道自身所处世界的本质。
因此他讨厌所有,由于厌恶,位于青春期的他就越来越特立独行,只有如此才尅表现出自身的反抗。
霍尔顿甚至看不惯周围遇到的所有事情,他想要离开这虚伪的世界,到不曾去到的地方装聋作哑的生活,然而真的要去做的时候却发现并不现实。
因此他非常的矛盾:他这一生最烦电影,然而在无聊的日子里他也只能看电影院打发时间;他很讨厌没有爱情的性关系,虽说讨厌但是却在糊涂之下叫来妓女;他厌恶虚假庸俗的女朋友萨丽,然而却沉浸在她的美色之中无法自拔,依然和她亲热。

《麦田里的守望者》之主人公霍尔顿人物性格之分析abstract:this paper focuses on the analysis on the character of holden in the american novel the catcher in the rye from 4 different aspects. this novel was bestseller at that time. holden was one of the representatives of “the lost generation”, who appeared in the 1960s.key words:holden, pain, spirit, kindhearted, idealist in this novel, the catcher in the rye, the flashback is used to describe the story of holden caulfield. holden quitted from school and lingered in new york for two days and nights. salinger told the readers holden’s experience and his complicated feeling. on one side, salinger described holden’s spirit of pain, gloom, loneliness, resentment, depression and rebellion etc, which are the typical characteristics of teenagers at that time. on the other side, salinger criticized the hypocrisy, airs and graces of the adults’ world. this is a marvelous novel. next, i would analyze the personality of holden.1. holden was a cultivated young man. actually, he was in senior school. he didn’t like studying and school education at all. but he paid attention to the hygiene and some other living details. for instance, when ackley?justcut?his?crumby?nails?over?the floor, holden was patient enough to ask ackley to cut the nails on the table. for another example, holden thought ackley never brushed his dirty teeth and he patiently persuaded him. and holden also disliked ackley just squeezed the big pimple on his chin before other people.actually, holden had a good family. in some degree, we can say he was from middle-class family. for his age, he could have a good living and no annoyance at all. but holden disliked the society and the school education just because he thought the so-called education was false and the purpose of the education was to breed them to chase those vanity and fame, which were meaningless in his mind. “all you do is to make a lot of dough and play golf and play bridge and buy cars and drink martinis and look like a hot-shot.”(re. chapter 22) in his deepest heart, he longed for purity, honest, kindness, truth. but the reality was so cruel and showed him the opposite side to him. so he resented it and he was depressed that he belonged to the “lost generation”. from his behavior, we can conclude that he gave up everything in his life except those people and affection he cherished such as jean, phoebe, his brother d.b.2. holden has intensive reverse psychology. he was a senior student. and he was in adolescent and rebellious. such as, he was aware that his roommate, stradlater disliked some words. but he would deliberately say such kind of words to irritate stradlater. stradlater disliked smoking in the dorm, but holden would intentionally smoke in the dorm to make him furious. holden was dispirited and depressed. he was fed up almost everything including school, studying, teachers, classmates, movies etc.holden could deal with the problem from different perspectives. for example, when they talk about stradlater, ackley thought stradlater was conceited, but in holden’s opinion, stradlater was very generous. so holden was different from others.3. holden was a kind-hearted man. he disliked his roommates and classmates because they had many bad living habits. but he is very kind to them. he disliked stradlater, but he wrote the composition for him. he liked jean gallagher very much who played international chess with him in his childhood. he worried much about jean for she had an appointment with stradlater who was regarded as a bad guy. holden hoped jean wouldn’t be hurt, but he didn’t want to greet her at all.when he was expelled by pencey prep (the school name) he never worried about himself. when he went to visit his history teacher mr. spencer, who flunked him in history, he was just afraid that he would hurt mr. spencer’s feelings for he knew nothing about history. because mr. spencer was mad about history, and he didn’t like it at all. holden was too kind to hurt anybody else. when he strolled in the street, he encountered two nuns who were raising donations. holden immediately donated most of his money to the basket though he was poor. he was kind-hearted and generous, full of love. he showed the great compassion to the people around the world.4. holden was an idealist. in his deepest heart, it was full of conflicts of ambition and reality. his ambition was to be the catcher in the field?of?rye. “anyway, i keep picturing all these little kids playing some game in this big field of rye and all. thousands of little kids, and nobody’s around--nobody big, i mean--except me. and i’m standing on the edge of some crazy cliff. what i have to do, i have to catch everybody if they start to go over the cliff--i mean if they’re running and they don’t look where they’re going i have to come out from somewhere and catch them. that’s all i’d do all day. i’d just be the catcher in the rye and all.i know it’s crazy, but that’s the only thing i’d really like to be. i know it’s crazy.”(re. chapter 22) why would holden like to be the catcher in the rye? what’s the symbol of the catcher? in my view, the catcher means those protectors who would protect the pure heart of the children. in holden’s lives, he just did it. he helped his roommates to get rid of those bad living habits. he worried much about jean when she had an appointment with stradlater because he thought stradlater was bad guy and he worried jean would be hurt. for his sister, phoebe, he loved her so much and taught her many things. he missed his brother----allie and his left-handed fielder’s mitt. holden would like those children to play freely and happily. but the society was full of danger----like the dangerous cliff. the duty of the catcher was to warn the children and protect them from falling off the cliff. holden just wanted to be such kind of man.“how?would?you?know?you?weren’t?being?a?phony??the?trouble?is,?you?wouldn’t.”i?said. (re. chapter 22) holden thought most people in the society were phonies. so he disliked the adult world at all. but on the other side, he was curious about the adult world. he would like to imitate and behave as an adult to find a whore toaccompany him. but he disliked the whores in the hotel. holden disliked his teacher mr. antonlini because he might be a gay. actually, holden was explicit that what was right and what was wrong, what were kindness and what sin was. by nature, he could refuse the vicious thing in the life. he couldn’t know how to cope with them but he could escape away from them. he was confused and full of agony while facing the true world. he knew the world was “dirty”, so he would like to protect those children from degenerating. it was difficult for the people to persist in the truth and themselves, but holden caulfield just did it. he was great. i think that was why salinger devoted so many words to description of holden caulfield. his daily language was full of dirty words, but he owned a noble heart and spirit. that was so different from those people around him. he was rebellious to the bone. but in some degree, he was reasonable enough to be what kind of man in the future. the world was too dirty to make people speechless. holden wouldn’t like to say any words. he just wanted to be dumb. and find some girl he loved and stayed with her in the cabin in the woods. they would keep in silence and live together. that was his dream for the future. it was a beautiful picture but couldn’t come true in this novel,because in the end, holden was ill and stayed at home. nobody could know the story after that.in sum, holden was the representative of the times, the production of the society, and the symbol of the rebellion from the world. he was the children’s shelter from the adult world. he only wanted to be the catcher who protected those kids playing in the rye field from falling off the dangerous cliff. he was so great and ideal. his spirit was perfect.reference:1. the catcher in the rye by j.d salinger, published by little, brown and company, 2001, nanking, yilin press, 2007。
