In 1855 two of the works Courbets for Paris International Exhibition were rejected. The reason given was that the subjects and figures were too coarsely materialistic and Realism in art too large. With the unplanned collaboration of Millet and Daumier,Courbet challenged the whole world of the Academy’s art and summoned public attention to what the French poet and art critic Charles Baudelaire in 1846 called “the heroism of modern life”.

Impressionism was a form of artistic expression in the 19th century. Generally speaking, the impressionists aimed at capturing the fleeting image of a scene taken by the eye in real life and recreating the transitory experience with brushstrokes.
French painters who originally allied themselves with the impressionist found that impressionism lacked form and structure. They began to seek new ways of expression. During the 2nd half of the 19th century, French impressionism created a dramatic break with the art of the past.
